2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish · Marshfield

Some time during the 1980's, Pope John Paul II mandated that the four major basilicas in Rome (St. Peter's at the Vatican, St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran, and St. Paul's Outside the Walls) should offer Eucharistic adoration all day long, every day. I will always be grateful to him for making such a positive impact on my seminary days as I went every afternoon for an hour to St. Peter's Basilica to pray before the Eucharist exposed. Once in a while, I would ride my 1965 Piaggio Vespa Rally Sport (wish I still had it) to one of the farther basilicas for the hour of prayer. I smile to remember that I once borrowed a very fast sporty motorcycle from a friend in the Swiss Guard and parked it on the sidewalk outside of St. Mary Major Basilica. When I came out after the hour of adoration, the scooters and motorcycles around me were ticketed for parking on the sidewalk, but my borrowed motorcycle had no ticket, probably because it had a Vatican license plate on Extraterritorial Vatican property. So I tried parking my Vespa on the sidewalk for my hour of prayer a few days later....and found the ticket when I returned, ha! My memories of days in the seminary were rich for many years.....all the hours in the classroom, all the laughs and good times with friends, the privilege of listening to the rector's conferences of Msgr. Dolan, now the cardinal in New York, and of course all the restaurants. I still remember the phone number of my favorite restaurant on the Appian Way as I would call them from the seminary's elevator phone on my way out and reserve the table next to the fireplace.....011 39 06 513 6743,,,Call them if you like.

But now, twenty-some years later, the memories all fade except for one. I still remember vividly the stillness, the peace, and the silence of my afternoon prayer hour in one of those basilicas, looking on Jesus in the Eucharist, wanting to love him more and letting him love me. Friends, here is a bold statement: The Catholic Church--and all Christian denominations--would not exist today except for the fact that the Eucharist has always been the heart of the Catholic Church. And our Church alone preserves the faith of the earliest Christians that it isn't just bread and wine. On this feast of Corpus Christi today, let's praise God for the gift of the Eucharist, strengthening our souls toward eternal life!

Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting, to the Lord, our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at 715-384-9414. He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date.

Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45-5:15 pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent.

First Eucharist and Confirmation- Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP’s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation.

RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults- Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at 715-384-3044. Classes begin each Fall.

Marriage- Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding.

Anointing of the Sick- If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at 715-384-9414. A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year.

New Parishioners- To join our community, please register at the Parish Office, the church welcome desk, or call 715-384-9414 Ext. 2.

Bulletin announcement requests are due in writing or via email([email protected]) and must be received in the Parish Office by 12:00pm on the preceding Monday.

A Reason to Sing

Singing changes the brain! Some studies show that when we sing, our bodies release hormones that relieve anxiety and stress. Other research indicates that when a group of people sings together, their heartbeats actually synchronize with each other.

The apostle Paul’s writing encourages the church to speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (eph. 5:19). And the Bible repeats, “Sing praise” more that fifty times.

In 2 Chronicles 20, we read a story of God’s people demonstrating their trust in God by singing as they marched into battle. Enemies were heading toward the people of Judah. Alarmed, King Jehoshaphat called everyone together. He led the community in intense prayer. They didn’t eat or drink, but only prayed, “We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (v. 12). The next day, they set out. They weren’t led by their fiercest warriors, but by their choir. They believed God’s promise that they would be delivered without having to fight at all (v.17).

While they sang and walked toward the conflict, their enemies fought each other! By the time God’s people reached the battlefield, the fighting had ended. God saved His people as they marched by faith toward the unknown, singing His praises.

God encourages us to praise Him for good reasons. Whether or not we are marching into battle, praising God has power to change our thought, our hearts, and our lives.
