MISSION & IMPACT

MISSIONThe Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) of The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) advances fairness and equality by providing pro bono legal services to low- income people and educational programs that foster diversity in the legal profession.

DID YOU KNOW?The JDC is San Francisco’s largest provider of free legal services.

IMPACTIn 2012, JDC staff and over 2,000 volunteers assisted more than 8,000 clients with legal consultation and representation in nearly every area of civil law, providing legal services valued at just over $18 million. The JDC is San Francisco’s largest provider of free legal services.

JDC’s Diversity Educational programs provided counseling, coaching, mentoring and financial support to more than 700 students from kinder-garten to law school. Students learned about the law and legal careers while benefitting from a rigorous curriculum, legal-themed school projects, and court tours.

The Pro Bono Legal Services Program provides free legal advice and representation to low-income San Francisco residents facing legal is-sues including eviction, consumer debt, child custody and child sup-port, divorce, domestic violence, and business law matters affecting nonprofits that serve low-income communities. JDC recruits, trains and supports hundreds of volunteers annually to provide these services. Our volunteers are partners and associates at law firms of all sizes, attorneys from in-house legal departments of major corporations and government offices, solo attorneys, and law school students.

PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES

HOMELESS ADVOCACY PROJECT The Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP) provides free legal and relat-ed social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at serious risk of becoming homeless. HAP prioritizes clients with mental health disabilities. HAP excels at helping people address immediate legal crises that affect their ability to keep their housing or prevent them from obtaining stable housing, but our work does not stop there. HAP is a pioneer in providing holistic legal services. HAP identifies all aspects of an individual or family’s life that have led to the crisis, and then provides social services to stabilize their lives. The most common legal issues addressed at HAP are federal disability benefits advocacy, eviction defense, and immigration documentation.

of 6,510 client visits at its office during 2012. HAP

also served additional clients offsite at methadone

clinics, at San Francisco General Hospital, at court,

and during home visits.

JDC’s Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP) maintains an 85% success rate for Sup-plemental Security Income

(SSI) cases. SSI is designed to help aged, blind, and

disabled people, who have little or no income,

and provides financial and associated medical support

to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

PROGRAMS

More than 80 law students have received scholarships, totaling over $1,500,000 in support.

JDC’s Diversity Educational Programs are provided in partnership with The Bar Association of San Francisco to increase the diversity of the legal profession. The programs are designed to inspire minority students to pursue a career in law by removing barriers to college and law school attendance. Program outcomes for high school students include: more than doubling the likelihood participating high school seniors will attend four year colleges; paid summer internship opportunities in law firms, legal departments, and government offices; offering students hands-on courtroom experience; tutoring, academic and college readiness counseling, and college tours. Program outcomes for undergraduates include: access to information and resources about the legal profession, knowledge about how to increase the likelihood of being admitted to law school, and scholarships and discounts for LSAT prep courses. For minority law school students, JDC offers three-year scholarships to Bay Area law schools as well as mentoring and networking opportunities. More than 80 students have received scholarships, totaling over $1,500,000 in support. BASF further extends the reach of this program by providing support and networking to minority attorneys with an emphasis on mentoring those who aspire to become members of the judiciary.

STAFFJDC Staff Leadership:

The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) champions equal access to justice and promotes humanity, excellence, and diver-sity in the legal profession. BASF provides legal services to dis-advantaged and underserved individuals in San Francisco and creates opportunities for legal service in the community and en-courage participation by its members. BASF advances profession-al growth and education, and elevates the standards of integrity, honor, and respect in the practice of law. BASF cultivates diversi-ty and equality in the legal profession, provides a collective voice for public advocacy, and pioneers constructive change in society. Daniel Burkhardt, JDC Executive Director, is also the Executive Director and General Counsel of BASF, and the officers of JDC’s Board of Directors are also the officers of the BASF board. BASF has 7,500 members and a staff of 54.

In addition to serving as a strong partner to the JDC by extending its ability to recruit to pro bono attorneys, BASF is the home of the Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS), an award-winning program that educates people about their legal rights and provides access to affordable, competent legal representation by matching prospective clients with affordable and qualified legal counsel.

The Justice & Diversity Center launched in March 2013 as the culmination of the merger of the Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) and The Bar Association of San Francisco Foundation in 2012. VLSP was founded in 1977 to provide low-income people with access to free legal advice and representation by leveraging the pro bono services of attorneys practicing in San Francisco. The BASF Foundation housed Diversity Educational Programs which support San Francisco’s underserved youth and minority college students aspiring to attend law school.

Since 1986, the cy pres doctrine, which originally applied to wills and trusts, has benefitted untold charitable organizations because the California Supreme Court endorsed the use of the doctrine in class action settlements. When funds remain after class members have been given a full opportunity to make a claim, the remaining funds can be distributed to a nonprofit organization.

In 2012, through its Community Organization Representation Project (CORP), JDC handled over 200 matters for nonprofit organizations in areas of transactional law.
