We make connections...
Every day IVC is connecting caring volunteers with people who could use a little help. These one-to-one personal connections are the heart of what IVC is all about, and probably the single most important thing we do. The benefits are immeasurable for both parties; volunteers say they get much more than they give, and there are known health benefits to volunteering. As one volunteer said, “There are so many amazing people in this commu-nity and their stories are a treasure! I love getting to hear about their history and the incredible and inspiring things they’ve done.”
We reduce loneliness and isolation...
through our many life-enrichment programs such as Music Appreciation, IVC Book Club, Flowers From the Heart, group and individual outings, Movie Group, programs at the Senior Center and so much more. Here are some of the outings we did in 2016:
Tour and talk at Bainbridge Gardens about the history of the gardens and the
Harui family, followed by lunch at the New Rose Café; Presentation and tour at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum; A docented tour and Visit to Bloedel Reserve in the sum-
mer to enjoy the beauty of the gardens and a visit to the miniature Holiday House display at Christmas; Movie and Theatre Groups enjoy movie series at BIMA and the Pavilion and theatre at Bainbridge Performing Arts.
These outings have not only offered opportunities to enjoy some of the wonderful assets of our community but have fostered connections and socialization among people who may be typically isolated. As several people have remarked, “It’s so wonderful to get out and be able to visit with other people”.
We promote health and Wellness…
Taking people to the pool for swim and fitness classes, to the Senior Center for Tai Chi and chair yoga, walk with a volunteer, providing medical note-takers to act as a second set of ears, and providing post-hospitalization support.
We get people Where they need to go….
not only to medical and therapy appointments, the grocery store, pharmacy, and visiting a family member or friend who is ill, but so many places in between. We recognize that even though someone can’t drive anymore, it’s so important for them to be able to do the things they enjoy, like painting or pottery, watching a movie, or walking in the park.
We help people With life transitions…
such as dealing with a parent or spouse with declining health who needs more care, the loss of a loved one, the challenge of being a family caregiver. In 2016 we started a new one-on-one Compassionate Companions Grief Support program to augment our existing Grief Support groups.
We support thriving in place…
Through supportive in-home services such as light housekeeping, minor yard care and home maintenance, help with computer and technology issues, getting the garbage cans back and forth to the street, and so much more. We help family caregivers by providing respite care and companionship for their loved ones and giving them a chance to have some time away for their own needs or to attend the IVC Caregivers Support Group.

Financial Support:
Our one major fundraiser, the Annual Summer Dinner Auction, was held at Kiana Lodge at the end of July. This event allows us to thank our volunteers and donors, showcase the wonderful work that IVC does in the community and hopefully inspire oth-ers to become involved.
Corporate sponsorship for this event, which brings in nearly 40% of our annual income, came from CHI Franciscan Medical
Center, Bainbridge Senior Living, The Suquamish Tribe, Todd Adams DDS, Peninsula Cancer Center, Town & Country Market, Hill Moving Services, Virginia Mason Clinic and New Motion Physical Therapy.
In June, Island Volunteer Caregivers received a Bainbridge Community Foundation Grant to expand our core capacity to meet the dramatic increase in demand for services and deepen our Life Enrichment Program to more intentionally address the issue of social isolation. This grant was made possible by support from the following donor advised funds: Alder Fund, Gloria Collins Brownell Fund, Michael Milligan & Jeanne E Fund,
Hastings Family Fund and Leslie and Michael Lebeau Philanthropic Fund as well as BCF Discretionary Funds. Over this past year we have experienced a marked increase in participation in Life Enrichment activities and this quote from one of our Volunteers beautifully illustrates the value of these:
Lynn is 93, grew up in Iowa and was a history teacher. She had been wanting to go to Bainbridge Gardens FOREVER and today was the day. She got to talk to Donna Harui, and had all sorts of questions about the
internment, and the gardens, and Donna’s parents and grandparents. Lynn became very emotional, as did I; Donna was a rock, and an inspiration and a teacher, and such a beautiful soul to take the time with us. Lynn has not stopped talking about it since. This is the type of experience, and gift you get when you volunteer at IVC” ~ IVC Volunteer
We were also very fortunate to receive a Grace Episcopal Church Outreach Grant to support an expanded Life Enrichment Program, including a visiting Pet Therapy Program, as well as adding staff time to provide program support and additional training for volunteers. Several other faith communities have provided financial support as well as being a source of many volunteers.
Whether through One Call for All , the Kitsap Great Give, the auction, or direct donations, individual donors continue to be our biggest source of funding. We are honored to be entrusted with these gifts to support the wonderful work of our volunteers.
In 2016 IVC participated in the request for proposals for Human Services funding through the City of Bainbridge Island, which will now be on a 2 year cycle. Local businesses such as Cook Family Funeral Home and Bainbridge Senior Living have provided special program support as well as event sponsorship.
IVC’s many years of outstanding community service is only possible through the efforts and generosity of all our Donors, Sponsors, Supporters, and of course, our Volunteers...
