Advocate Comforter
What’s Pastor Thinking
Jesus promised His disciples that after He was gone,
He would send an advocate. We have come to know
this advocate as the Holy Spirit that descended upon
the disciples on Pentecost. And here we are,
centuries later, celebrating that event. This is
Pentecost Sunday. It is the birthday of the Church,
for it was when the power of the Holy Spirit
descended that the disciples began to preach and
proclaim the message of God's saving grace. It was
then that the followers of Christ took on a new
meaning, a new purpose.
The Holy Spirit, the advocate, the comforter or
the counselor, comes to stand with us and within us
as we face the world. It is not the power of
God who pushes us along with words of
encouragement. "Go ahead, you can do it."
The Holy Spirit comes to us for a specific purpose,
and that is to give us the means as well as the where
-with-all to proclaim God's grace before the world.
For that to transpire, we must first recognize where
the advocate is in our lives and how the
advocate works in our lives.
I can look back over my life and name several
people who have carried the voice of God into my
life, serving as the advocate when I was unable to
recognize the Holy Spirit speaking to me directly.
These have been counselors and teachers, friends
and colleagues. I didn't always listen to them, either,
but I now recognize how God had placed them in
my life for a clear purpose.
I suspect that there are times when each of us have
seen the advocate at work in our lives and perhaps
times when we have served as the advocate in the
life of someone else. But there are also times when
we as a Church are called to be the advocate to a
group or to our society.
The Pentecost story, the story of the Holy Spirit
descending like a mighty wind and resting upon the
followers of Christ like tongues of fire, happened
then and it happens today. But it doesn't just
'happen'. It happens for a purpose. We have been
inspired by the Holy Spirit. We have been filled
with the breath of God. We have the word of God
on our lips and the spirit of God in our breath. We
must speak. We must act. Jesus promised that the
Holy Spirit would be an advocate. When the Spirit
lives within us, we become the advocate.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Today we celebrate Pentecost. The Holy Spirit
wants to make us advocates of God’s presence to
bring new life to others,
especially those who do not
know the love of God in their
lives. Jesus tells us that He is
sending the Spirit to us. The
Spirit is the Word speaking to
us in a most profound way
because He dwells with us
and guides us to all truth.
The quest for truth,
therefore, involves
prayerfulness and
reflectiveness. God speaks
not only in the silence of our hearts, but also in the
people around us. Supporting St. Vincent de Paul
helps us to help the poor and needy believe in the
mystery of God’s love for them. The Society of St.
Vincent de Paul is non-sectarian and helps all
people regardless of their race, religion, or
background. The ministry of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul is a person to person service to
those in need, through a home visit. Members visit
the clients in their homes to assess their real needs.
Working with the client, a strategy is developed to
restore the client’s independence and self esteem.
Experienced client service members train new
members to conduct home visit interviews and to
develop recovery strategies using conference and
other agency and organization resources. Two
members are assigned to a case and have available
to them the collective expertise of other client
service members. Your identity and circumstances
will be held in strict confidence. Meet us at the
Parish Ministry Fair on September 23rd if you wish
to become a member.
We are a Catholic Parish in Bellmore, New York, Since 1912
Our Mission is to Encourage Evangelize & Educate
The Men of the Way of Light On the first Pentecost, we find the Apostles behind
locked doors, very afraid. Their fear and lack of
confidence prevented them from bringing the
Gospel message to the world as Jesus had
commanded them. Then, as Jesus had promised,
the Holy Spirit came down upon them and burned
in their minds and hearts! Through the many gifts
of the Holy Spirit, they found the courage and
passion to carry out their “Great Commission.” We
also received the gifts of the Holy Spirit at
Confirmation! Does the Holy Spirit burn in your
mind and heart? Or have you covered that light
with a bowl? We cannot bring the Gospel message
to others without the help of the Holy Spirit, who
gives us courage and guidance. Interested in re-
igniting that burning desire to bring the Gospel
message to others? Please join the us at our next
meeting on Saturday, June 2nd, as we call on the
Holy Spirit to ignite the passion of Jesus’ love within
us, and the courage to bring His message of Truth
to the world. We meet bimonthly on Saturdays in
the Nazareth Room of the Holy Family Chapel
(lower church) immediately after the 8:00 AM
Mass. Bagels and coffee provided. If you cannot
attend, please pray for our group and for our
parish. For more information, contact Fred Kreuder
at 987-5350 or email [email protected]. Visit our
FaceBook page: “Men of the Way of Light - St.
Barnabas Men’s Faith Discussion Group.”.
Catholics for Freedom of Religion Good News for Military: The Air Force reversed its
decision to punish a highly decorated colonel after
he declined to sign a “certificate of spouse
appreciation” for a retiring master sergeant’s same-
sex spouse. Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson
announced the new ruling in favor of the colonel
and reinstated him. She said, “Colonel Bohannon
had the right to exercise his sincerely held religious
beliefs and did not unlawfully discriminate…” Not
Good News for Military Chaplains: Army Chaplain
Scott Squires has been reprimanded and faces
“career ending punishment” because an Army
investigator wrongly concluded he discriminated
when he declined to facilitate a Strong Bonds
Marriage Retreat that included same-sex couples.
However, Baptist Chaplain Squires was actually
following Department of Defense regulations. “We
must remember that at every level of government
there are bureaucrats who actively resist...efforts to
preserve and protect religious freedom.” Hiram
Sasser, general counsel for First Liberty.

If you wish to arrange a baptism, please
contact the rectory at 785-0054. Once your
request is received you will be invited to meet
one of the priests. This meeting offers parents
an opportunity to review the baptism
ceremony and set the date. The meeting is
more conversational than instructional. Forms
need to be completed giving information on
the parents, child’s date and place of birth, as
well as the names and religious affiliation of
the sponsors. At least one sponsor must be a
practicing Catholic.
Baptisms are held on Saturday at 11:30 AM,
and Sunday at 1:30 PM, when the Church is
available.
If you wish to hold a private baptism you must
bring a visiting priest to perform the baptism
service. Private baptisms may be held on
Saturday at 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM and on
Sunday at 3:00 PM, if these times are
available.
First time parents are required to attend a
Baptism Class. Classes are held in the Holy
Family Chapel on Agape Sunday, the second
Sunday of the month. Crying babies and noisy
children are welcome. We begin with Mass at
10:15 AM, when your baby will be welcomed
to St. Barnabas, followed by refreshments and
the class.
The dates for class are June 10, (10:30 Mass
for July 8, August 12 and September 9),
October 14, November 11, December 9.
