Last week we celebrated in style with all of our prize winners from the academic year 2014-15. Our annual and prestigious event began with canapés distributed by our student leaders, whilst the guests in attendance were serenaded with music performed by our string ensemble.
Students, parents and their friends congregated in the theatre as staff dressed in academic robes opened the event with a procession towards the stage. Ms Stone opened the evening officially, followed by a speech from our principal, Mr Ribton.
The first set of prizes were awarded to the Art & Design, Business Studies and English & Media departments, which was preceded by Lord Fink delivering a speech to the audience.
More awards followed, along with a musical interludes performed by Darnell Christie of Year 12 and the Jazz band. Former student,
Adekunle Awodele who now attends the University of Cambridge, delivered an inspiring speech about the importance of having a positive attitude and hard work. Marcella Cilia, also a former student captivated the audience as she discussed completing a gap year with United States Geological Society. She received a £4000 scholarship from the Royal Geographical Society for the placement.
The event ended with the final prizes being awarded. Each student received the complete novels of George Orwell.
It was a glorious evening, where parents; governors; students and teachers came together to celebrate our finest achievements amidst an array of speeches, musical talent and film reviews. Our thanks go out to Ms Stone, our Heads of Departments, and our student leaders for helping to make this another successful celebration at the academy.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: BDA AWARDS CEREMONY 2015
The 2015 Youth Take Over Day will take place at Hammersmith and Fulham Council on Friday 20th November 2015.
The aim of the day is for young people to have a chance to experience the world of work and to work alongside adults, gain skills, knowledge, inspiration and an understanding of the processes behind decisions that affect them, whilst the Council will gain knowledge of how young people experience our services and benefit from their fresh ideas and creativity. It is also hoped that Youth Take Over Day will serve as a catalyst for further youth involvement opportunities in services where young people are currently not represented or involved.
The following students from Ark Burlington Danes Academy have been offered the following roles:
The Nutcracker cast had a 3 hour workshop on Tuesday the 10th November, with two members of Matthew Bourne's Company - New Adventures. They worked on their characters and learnt some professional repertoire.
We would like to invite all family and friends of the cast to come and watch the show on the 24th of November in the Dennis Potter Theatre.
The show will being at 6:00pm and tickets are available to buy now at the cost of just £2. Tickets can be purchased from the main reception or via Ms Smith or Ms Fisher.

MR POINTER’S PHYSICS LECTURE: QUANTUM CRYPTOLOGY
On Thursday the 12th of November, Dr O'Hear organised a special talk as part of her speaker series by none other than our very own head of science - Mr Pointer. Being a Physics teacher inevitably Sir spoke about Physics but this wasn’t just any old Quantum Physics but in fact, Quantum Cryptology. Now some of you are wondering what you've stumbled into and that’s what I felt when the talk started to develop, but very simply, this is the use of quantum physics (processes involving
atoms and photons) to help decipher cryptic codes used in computing.
Sir's simplistic explanation and examples made it very easy on the ears even if you didn’t fully appreciate the context of what he was saying. In fact, I was not entirely certain whether the year 13 physics students understood what was being explained, or whether they were completely engrossed by the topic, as they were the quietest in a room full of sixth formers!
This was an enjoyable experience for everyone involved, for no matter where your interests may lie, Mr Pointer fully engaged the students with fun exercises that kept some of us on or toes.
"Although I don’t do physics I really enjoyed the talk because it was interesting and weird how everyone can be everywhere at the exact same time until you see them. Sir spoke really well!"
To conclude, here is one of the examples Mr Pointer provided for you to try and scratch your heads over; Person A is trying to send a box to Person B through the messenger - Person C. However, persons A and B do not trust person C so they have two locks and two keys between themselves (one pair each) - remember Person C can make a copy of the keys so how can Person A get the message to Person B through a box that can be locked and opened? If you think you have the answers, go see Mr Pointer! –

YEAR 9 NETBALL: DETERMINATION & RESILIENCE
7
BDA SPORTS
The Year 9 netball squad had two challenging matches last week, playing both Holland Park and Queens Gate in one night. Both schools put out very strong teams and the Y9 BDA girls really played their socks off in an attempt to challenge the top two schools in the league. Unfortunately we lost both games but the determination and resilience that the girls demonstrated was second to none and they managed to score several goals in the second half.
Teams for week beginning 23rd November

We had a great start to the week here in the library! It was so lovely to see the year 7 parents coming to the library sessions and really getting involved with their children’s literacy! Reading for pleasure just half an hour a day can vastly improve a child’s literacy skills, so it was great to see the parents setting such good examples for
their children by taking an interest.
Thank you to all of the students who have been taking their AR quizzes, we have had a wonderful 178 quizzes passed this week alone. The best class being 7U who passed a whopping 34 quizzes this week well done guys!!! Let’s see if we can get even more quizzes done next week shall we?
Have a good weekend
The Raven Boys Maggie Steifvater
This book starts in a truly mysterious fashion Blue is a psychics daughter but the gift has not been passed on to her, so it comes as a huge surprise when she sees the spirit of a boy called Gansey from the local private school wandering around the church yard. Seeing this spirit means he has less than a
year to live but who is he and why can she see him? Through this Blue gets dragged into the mysterious world of the ‘raven boys’ who are searching for the legendary tomb of the raven king. Alongside this Blue and the boys must overcome their own personal battles be it overbearing parents or financial struggles.
This book was amazing it had me hooked within pages the real world and magical one collide and make a compelling yet believable fantasy for any age of reader. Each character has their
own sad story to tell and each triumph feels more special because of that. A fantastic book in a really great series and well worth a read.
