Dear Friend of Nature,May is such a great month for birds! The hummingbirds are back and busy at the nectar feeders; warblers are at the peak of their migration; and the nesting season is in full swing! Knowledge leads to appreciation and learning how to identify birds by sight and sound is very rewarding. A good pair of binoculars becomes essential as you try to spot an elusive warbler high in a tree. We carry a wide variety of great optics to help you get “up close and personal” with your favorite new birds.Unfortunately, birds don't always pose for a good look, so learning to correctly match an unknown song to one on a birdsong CD is always satisfying. We are glad to help you select an audio CD that will be just right for your identification needs. You'll be picking out those tanager and oriole songs in no time!To keep your backyard humming with activity, make sure you have an ample supply of hummingbird feeders in your yard. Our Hummingbird & Oriole Nectar is a convenient way to keep your feeders filled with the sweet nectar hummingbirds love.Take advantage of this special month of birding activity, and the savings found in our flyer.Daniel Zarka and Staff, Find us at 2 locations: WBU Okemos and East Lansing

Fun Facts about Nyjer® from the Wild Bird Feeding Industry:

Nyjer® is:

* The yellow flowering crop of Guizotia abyssinica.* A seed favored by finches for its size and high oil content.

Nyjer® is NOT:

* A pink to purple flowering plant of the thistle species.* A perennial or biennial noxious weed.* An aggressive, opportunistic thistle strain from Europe, Africa or Asia.

Nyjer® Seed Plant Facts:

* An oilseed crop that is cultivated in Ethiopia, India, Myanmar and Nepal. It is not grown in the US.* The average plant height is four feet but can be up to seven feet.* It is traditionally harvested while the buds are still yellow, then stacked to dry.* The seeds, loosely held in the flower head, are black, club-shaped and narrowly long.* It is the only major wild bird feed ingredient imported from overseas.* In 1985, the US Department of Agriculture ruled heat treatment as a “condition of entry.”* In 1997, treatment temperature was set at 250 deg. for 15 minutes to devitalize all weed seeds that may be present.* It has been marketed as bird seed for about 40 years.
