Sophomore forward Brian Werner (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) led the way with a career-high 23 points, three of which came on a 63-foot buzzer- beater that tied the game at 73-73. Bryan Bailey (Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) contributed 21 points, including two key free throws in the overtime session to help preserve the win. In addition to Lehigh, the Bison own victories this season over Lock Haven, St. Francis-PA, Drew, Rider, Cornell, UMBC, Mount St. Mary's, Lafayette, Army, American and Colgate. THE LAST TIME THE BISON & THE GREATDANES MET: Dan Bowen led a list of fiveBucknell players in double-figures with 18points to lead the Bison past Albany, 72-61, on February 23 of last season.

In the first meeting ever between theschools, Bucknell shot 58.0 percent fromthe field. The Bison also did a fine job onthe glass, outrebounding the Great Danes36-to-22.

After Albany cut the margin to one sixminutes into the second half, the Bisonwent on a 14-4 run to take control.Bucknell's defense then took charge,holding Albany without a field goal fornearly seven minutes late in the period.

Bryan Bailey (16), Brian Muckle (12),Valter Karavanic (10) and Shaun Asbury(10) were the other Bison in double-digits.

Todd Cetnar paced Albany with 18points, and Steve Albany had 15.

BUCKNELL'S LAST TIME OUT: Sopho-more forward Brian Werner scored a ca-reer-high 23 points, including a 60-footheave at the buzzer that tied the game at73-73, to lead Bucknell to a thrilling 82-78overtime victory against Lehigh in DavisGymnasium on Wednesday evening.

After Ed Lacayo sank a pair of freethrows to give the Mountain Hawks a 73-70 lead with 0:02 remaining, Bucknellinbounded the ball to Werner who took onedribble along the right sideline before let-ting the ball fly just before the hornsounded. The shot swished through thenet 60-feet away sending the crowd into afrenzy and the game into the extra ses-sion.

Werner continued his hot hand on thefirst possession in overtime, sinking a 12-foot jumper to give the Bison the lead 75-73. After Lacayo tied the game on a layup,

HEAD COACH SCOTT BEETEN: Beeten isin his first season as the head coach of theAlbany program. A 1971 graduate of LehighUniversity, he was the Associate HeadCoach at the University of California-Berke-ley for three years prior to accepting the jobwith the Great Danes. He also served stintsas assistants at Penn (1983-88) and GeorgeWashington (1990-97). Beeten was athree-year starter in both basketball andbaseball for Lehigh. He was selected bythe St. Louis Cardinals in the MLB draft.

Bucknell trailed by six with 0:35 left inregulation before Werner keyed the im-probable comeback. After Bailey sankone-of-two at the line to cut the margin tofive, 71-66, the Bison fouled ZlatkoSavovic, an 89% free throw shooter, with0:11 left. He missed both shots, and Bi-son forward Boakai Lalugba (East Or-ange, N.J./Bishop Francis Essex Catho-lic) immediately drove to the hoop and wasfouled with 0:07 remaining. Lalugba con-verted on one of the two attempts, but therebound went out of bounds to Bucknell.Werner caught the inbounds pass at thetop of the key and promptly nailed a three-pointer to cut the margin to one, 71-70, with0:04 left.

Bucknell used an 11-0 run early in thegame to gain a 13-3 edge, and led 32-23with 3:56 remaining in the opening halfbefore Lehigh rallied. The MountainHawks scored eight points at the freethrow line in a 10-2 outburst to cut the leadto one at 34-33 with 1:22 left. But layups byLalugba and Dan Blankenship(Moundsville, W.Va./Wheeling Park) gaveBucknell a 38-33 lead at the break.

Lehigh opened the second half byoutscoring the Bison 7-2 over the first 2:51to knot the game at 40-40. A three-pointerby Matt Logie, one of six he hit on the night,gave the Mountain Hawks their first leadsince the game’s opening minute. Lehigh

�����������Pat Flannery (Bucknell '80) is in his sev-enth year as the head coach of the Bison.He has posted the best winning percent-age among any active Patriot Leaguecoach in conference games (57-29, .663),and has a current overall record of 106-89.

Prior to his arrival at Bucknell, Flannerycoached for five seasons at Div. III LebanonValley. He posted a 95-43 mark with theDutchmen, and led them to a nationalchampionship in 1994.

As a point guard for then head coachCharlie Woollum, Flannery led the Bison inassists for four straight seasons. He was atwo-year captain, and finished his careerwith 505 assists.

stretched the advantage to five, 45-40, be-fore the Bison retaliated with a 6-0 run toregain the edge, 46-45 with 14:40 remain-ing. Another three by Logie with 5:54 leftgave Lehigh the lead back at 62-60 andseemed to put the Mountain Hawks in con-trol.

Werner added a career-high sevensteals and five rebounds, while Bailey,Lalugba and Blankenship each finished indouble-figures with 21, 13 and 11 points,respectively. Logie led the Lehigh attackwith a game-high 25 points, including asix-for-10 performance from beyond thearc. Alan Goff added 13 and Ed Lacayoand Matt Crawford each chipped in with12.

ALBANY'S LAST TIME OUT: Albany tookadvantage of 36 Lehigh turnovers en routeto an 81-74 overtime victory over the Moun-tain Hawks last Saturday in New York. TheMountain Hawks led 33-29 at the break,but the Great Danes rallied to take theirfirst lead with 17:04 left in regulation.

Albany pushed its lead to 61-55 on athree-pointer by E.J. Gallup. Lehigh tiedthe game at 61-61 when Matt Logie nailedback-to-back three-pointers. The Moun-tain Hawks missed two potential game-winning shots in the last 10 seconds.

NOBODY DOES IT BETTER: During theseven years that Pat Flannery has been atthe helm of the Bison program, the Bisonhave finished lower than third place in thePatriot League's regular season just once.Although the year referred to is this season,Bucknell owns a very impressive 57-29record (.663) under Flannery's direction inconference games. LALUGBA GARNERS PATRIOT LEAGUEPLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: Sopho-more forward Boakai Lalugba was cho-sen as the Patriot League's Player of theWeek for the week ending on Sunday,January 7, 2001. Lalugba averaged 21.5points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bisonto a 1-1 week. He opened the week with20 points and 10 rebounds in a win overMount St. Mary's, and then followed thatperformance with 23 points and 14 re-bounds -- both career-highs -- in a loss toCanisius. It was the first such honor forLalugba in his young career.

RAMAGE RETURNS TO THE HARDWOOD:Co-captain Jake Ramage (Moorestown,N.J./Moorestown), who recently under-went arthroscopic lateral menisectomysurgery on his right knee, saw his first

game action since December 9 in the con-test against Holy Cross on January 17. Hereturned to the starting lineup one gamelater, and scored seven points inBucknell's win over Army (1/20/2001).

NUMBERS FROM THE BISON BENCH IM-PROVING: With such a young team,Coach Flannery has been forced to playhis starters an incredible number of min-utes. Over the first seven games of theseason, Bucknell's bench held its own,being outscored 135-124. But for a periodof about a month, from mid-January tomid-February, the bench scoring totalsnever reached double-figures. However,Bucknell's bench has turned the trend andhas been in double-figures in three of thelast four outings.

BAILEY & LALUGBA CONTINUE TO POSTDOUBLE-FIGURE SCORING TOTALS: Sofar this season, Bailey and sophomoreBoakai Lalugba have scored in double fig-ures in all but six contests. Bailey hasmanaged to score at least 10 points inevery game this season except for the Vir-ginia (7 pts) and Canisius (7 pts) contests.Lalugba has reached the 10-point plateauin every contest except for the Rutgers (2pts), American (9 pts), Iona (9 pts) andHoly Cross (1 pt.) games.

FLANNERY REACHES THE CENTURYMARK AT BUCKNELL: Head coach PatFlannery became just the third mentor inBucknell history to eclipse the 100-winmark when he led his team to victory atUMBC on Dec. 30. Currently in his seventhseason, Flannery reached the 100-win to-tal in the 180th game he coached for theBison -- quicker than both MalcolmMusser (188 games) and CharlieWoollum (202 games). Flannery currentlyranks third on the school's all-time winslist behind Woollum (318) and Musser(110) with 106.

FLANNERY GETS OVERALL WIN NUMBER200: Bucknell's 71-60 victory over Colgatelast Sunday was the 200th win in thecoaching career of Pat Flannery. He cur-rently has 106 wins at Bucknell, andnotched 95 victories while he was thehead coach at Lebanon Valley.

BISON CONTINUE TO DOMINATE INDAVIS: Bucknell University continues toenjoy great success playing at home inDavis Gymnasium. Last season the Bi-son went 8-4 at home, and this seasonthey finished 9-4 in Davis, raising their all-

BUCKNELL PLAYS SPOILER ON THEROAD: The Bison went into the RAC at theUniversity of Maryland-Baltimore Countyand handed the Retrievers their first homeloss in six ball games this season, 70-68,on December 30.

The Bisonhave shot just 58.0% (287-495) at the freethrow line during that span, including sea-son-lows of 37.5% (6-16) in setbacks toCanisius (Jan. 6) and Army (Feb. 14).

HOOPS TEAM RANKED FOURTH IN NCAAGRADUATION RATE STUDY: The men'sbasketball team has a graduation rate of91% which is fourth behind Stanford (100),Manhattan (92), and Northwestern (92).The national average for men's basketballplayer's was 43%. This year's rate mea-sured student-athletes who enrolled in theacademic years from 1990-91 to 1993-94and earned degrees within six years oftheir enrollment date. If a student-athletetransfers to another institution, the stu-dent-athlete is counted against aninstitution's graduation rate total.

ERASERS WORKING HARD ON CAREER-HIGHS: Jordan Hardenbergh and BrianWerner have both set career-highs thisseason for rebounds. Hardenberghsnagged six boards in the American con-test and topped that mark with nine re-bounds in the Rider contest.

Not to be out done by his classmate,Werner collected a career-high sevencaroms against Iona and then eight in theRider contest. He tied that mark with eightrebounds at Penn State, and set a newpersonal best with 10 caroms in the winover the Mount on Jan. 3.

BAILEY HAS A CAREER-NIGHT WITH THEBASKETBALL AT AMERICAN: Junior pointguard Bryan Bailey set a new career-highwhen he handed out a game-high eightassists in Bucknell's 60-58 setback atAmerican on November 29th. In addition,he collected a career-best four steals inthe outing.

LALUGBA BECOMING A FORCE ON THEGLASS -- SETS NEW CAREER-STAN-DARD: Sophomore forward BoakaiLalugba continues to assert himself onthe glass, and has improved his rebound-ing average to 7.7 caroms per game.

The 6'6," 220-pounder hauled down16 boards in Bucknell's overtime victory atLafayette on Jan. 13, establishing a newcareer-high. He is currently the second-leading rebounder in the Patriot League.

EIGHT CAREER-HIGHS SET BY BISON INDREW CONTEST: During the victoryagainst Drew on November 27, fiveBucknell men's basketball players eitherset or tied career records in certain statis-tical categories.

Blankenship tallied five assists andfive steals during the contest. His five as-sists tied his previous high set last yearversus Manhattan, and his five steals werean outright career-high.

Santos grabbed six boards versus theRangers, two better than his previous highof four rebounds. Freshman forward JackNamvou (Yaounde, Cameroon/Georgetown Prep) also set his career-high for rebounds by collecting fouragainst Drew.

Sophomore forwards, Werner andLalugba, set then career-high's for re-bounds with six and 12, respectively.Lalugba also handed out a career-highfour assists.

Rounding out the Bison setting career-highs was freshman forward JeremiahBennett (Lookout, W.V./Fork Union Mili-tary Academy) who snagged a then-per-sonal-best seven boards during the Drewvictory.

BISON IN ROAD OPENERS: Bucknell hasan all-time record of 39-66 (37.5%) inroad-opening games. Last year the Or-ange and Blue were victorious in theirroad-opener at the Pepsi-Marist Classicwhen they defeated Maine 79-69.

BISON IN SEASON OPENERS: In theirseason opener versus Lock Haven onNovember 18, the Bison improved theirall-time season-opener record with an 85-77 victory over the Bald Eagles. The Or-ange and Blue were able to fend off 70%shooting from Lock Haven to clinch thevictory. In the game, Bucknell had three in-dividuals finish in double figures and shot30-41 from the foul line.

BAILEY AND LALUGBA HAVE CAREER-HIGHS IN LOCK HAVEN CONTEST: Baileyand Lalugba both set career-high pointtotals against Lock Haven in the season-opener.

Bailey scored 30 points in the contestto lead the Bison offensive attack, includ-ing 17-of-19 shooting from the free throwline. Lalugba outdid his previous career-high of 11 points by scoring 23 against theBald Eagles.

RAMAGE & BAILEY TO CAPTAIN 2000-2001 BISON: Senior guard Ramage andjunior guard Bailey will serve as captainsfor the 2000-2001 Bison.

Bailey started all 28 contests last sea-son and averaged almost 30 minutes pergame. He brings tremendous athleticismand great instincts to the table for the Bi-son. He is also the teams leading return-ing scorer after averaging 11.4 points pergame in 1999-00. Ramage returns to thehardcourt this year after sitting out last sea-son with a torn ACL. He will bring a deadlyoutside shot to the Bison offensive arse-nal, and will lead by example on the court.

As a fresh-man, Werner averaged 3.5 points pergame and 2.4 caroms while only playingan average of 13.7 minutes per contest.Werner also garnered Patriot LeagueRookie-of-the-Week honors last seasonafter he scored a season-best 15 pointsagainst Lehigh.

TWO BUCKNELL ALUMNI NAMED TO PA-TRIOT LEAGUE ALL-DECADE TEAM:Patrick King '92 and Mike Bright '93 werenamed to the Patriot League All-DecadeMen's Basketball Team in early Novem-ber. The team was named in honor of thePatriot League's 10th anniversary.

Both King and Bright played for the Bi-son during the Charlie Woollum era. Dur-ing King's senior year, the Orange andBlue made it to the Patriot League Cham-pionship contest. Bright followed suit andalso led the Bison all the way to the confer-ence championship as a senior. TheNCAA Tournament somehow alludedboth of these Bucknell greats.

Bright is third on the Bucknell all-timelist for points in a career with 1,670, aver-aging 14.3 per game during his career. Heis the only Bucknell player to knock downnine three-pointers in a contest.

King finished his career with 1,007points and the second best season pointtotal with 610 during the 1991-92 cam-paign. His career field goal percentage of.638 still stands as a benchmark for Bisonplayers to shoot for.

GET USED TO THE EAGLES: Bucknell bas-ketball fans should get used to seeing theAmerican University Eagles on the sched-ules. Beginning in the 2001-02 academicyear, American will join the Patriot Leaguein all sports except football.

The Orange and Blue had two con-tests with the Eagles this season -- on No-vember 29, 2000 at American (L, 60-58),and on January 22, 2001, in Davis Gymna-sium (W, 61-51).

In recording its second straight victory of the season, the Bucknell men'sbasketball team used a balanced scoring attack, placing four players indouble-figures, to build a 23-point second half advantage en route to a 68-82 victory over the Red Flash. The Bison held St. Francis to a 34.6% fieldgoal percentage (18-52) in the contest to build a healthy lead. The Red Flashstayed close to the Bison due to 11-15 shooting from behind the three-pointarc in the second stanza. Washington, D.C. - Nov. 29, 2000Vladimir Buscaglia nailed two free throws with 40 seconds left to put Ameri-can up for good in a 60-58 victory for the Eagles. Bucknell got out to a greatstart, leading by as many as seven in the first half, before the Eagles ralliedfor a 35-32 lead at the break. They stretched that lead to nine in thesecond half before the Bison turned it up defensively and got back in theball game. A Jake Ramage three gave the Bison the lead 54-53, but withthe game knotted at 55-55, American made enough free throws down thestretch for the win. Ramage connected on five-of-seven three-point shotsand led the Bison with 19 points, while Boakai Lalugba hauled down acareer-high 13 rebounds.

TheBison jumped out to a 38-26 halftime lead after shooting 53.3% in theopening 20 minutes. Lalugba tallied 12 points and a half dozen caromsin the period, while freshman Jeremiah Bennett gave the Orange andBlue a boost off the bench with seven points and six rebounds. Bucknell’sdefense held the Mountaineers to just 28.6% shooting and forced 11 first-half turnovers. It was more of the same for Bucknell in the second half, asthe Bison shot 60% in the period to earn their seventh win of the season.

The Bison defense did the jobin the first half, forcing 11 American turnovers and holding the Eagles to just14 points. In the second half Bucknell picked up the offense, shooting63.2% from the floor while stretching its lead to as much as 14 points.American cut the lead to three, 45-42, with 4:41 to go, but the Bisoncountered with eight straight points - including six from Bailey - to move backin front by 11 with 2:14 remaining. American could get no closer than ninethe rest of the way as Bucknell converted on all six of its free throw attemptsdown the stretch. The win avenged an earlier season loss to the Eagles.

Hamilton, N.Y. - Jan. 24, 2001Colgate's Tim Sullivan drained a three-point shot with 15 seconds remain-ing to propel Colgate to a 63-62 win at Cotterell Court. Bucknell led almostthe entire second half before Sullivan added to his career-high 24 points.It was the first time all season Bucknell lost a game in which it had led athalftime (9-1). Brian Werner scored a layup to give Bucknell a 62-60 leadwith 36 seconds left, but Sullivan made good on what turned out to be thegame-winner after one of Colgate's 17 offensive rebounds. The winsnapped a six-game losing streak for the Bison and was Pat Flannery’s200th victory as a head coach. Colgate led 33-31 at the break, but theBison used a 13-6 run to take a 48-43 lead with 10:20 left. After Colgatefought back to tie the game at 48-48 with 8:43 to play, the Orange andBlue assembled the game-turning 14-2 run over the next 5:37. After Ed Lacayo had given Lehigh a 73-70 leadwith 1.8 seconds left on a pair of free throws, Werner took the inboundspass, dribbled once and let it fly. Werner put Bucknell ahead in the OT witha jumper before fouling out. He also notched a career-best with sevensteals. Bryan Bailey finished with 21 points, including a key pair of freethrows to keep the Bison in front down the stretch.
