2002-03 GAME RECAPSComcast Center’sInaugural Game

Game 1[12/15] Maryland 64, Miami (O.) 49

COLLEGE PARK — Playing the role of defending NCAA champi-ons for the first time, Maryland delighted the largest home crowd inschool history with a performance reminiscent of its banner seasonof a year ago.

Drew Nicholas scored 16 points as 12th-ranked Maryland cruisedto its 85th consecutive non-conference home victory, 64-49 overMiami of Ohio.

The night began with the unfurling of the championship bannerfrom the rafters of the new $125 Comcast Center. The scene obvi-ously had an impact on Maryland coach Gary Williams, who was sweptaway by the moment.

“You never know if you’re going to see that during your coachingcareer,” he said. “I was kind of caught up in it.”

So much that he followed the ceremony with his customary pre-game speech to his team.

“Then I remembered they hadn’t introduced the players yet. Soafter they introduced the players, I had to give the same speechagain - and they still didn’t hear me,” Williams said.

Playing in front of an emotionally charged sellout crowd of 17,950,the Terrapins (1-0) turned in a performance befitting their statureas defending national champions.

Maryland limited the RedHawks (0-2) to 27-percent shooting intaking an 11-point halftime lead, then used a 9-0 run early in thesecond half to pull away.

The Terrapins’ 85-game non-conference run, which started in1989 at Cole Field House, is the longest in the nation. Maryland alsohas won 19 straight overall at home since Feb. 14, 2001.

It wasn’t a brilliant performance, but it was plenty good enough.Danny Horace had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, which

had the misfortune of drawing the defending champions in the open-ing of their new arena.

Ryan Randle scored a career-high 15 points for the Terrapins, who lost four starters from the team that beat Indiana in 2002 toclaim the school’s first NCAA title. But Maryland, which started fiveseniors against Miami, seems to have enough talent and depth tomake a serious run at a third straight Final Four appearance.

It was 23-19 before Terrapins freshman Nik Caner-Medley madea free throw and Blake followed with six straight points, including a3-pointer, to put Maryland up 32-21 at the half.

Blake, the lone returning starter from last season’s team, fin-ished with nine points and eight assists.

Horace opened the second half with a layup, but Maryland’s CalvinMcCall responded with a jumper, freshman Travis Garrison made athree-point play and Randle made successive baskets in the lane fora 41-23 lead.

Game 2[11/11] Maryland 97, The Citadel 49

COLLEGE PARK — A quick start by Maryland put a rapid end toany hopes The Citadel had of hanging with the defending NCAA cham-pions.

Drew Nicholas scored 17 of his career-high 28 points in the firsthalf as No. 11 Maryland built a 26-point lead and cruised to a 97-49victory.

Nicholas had 10 points in the opening nine minutes to help theTerrapins go up 24-5. That convinced the Bulldogs that this wasn’tgoing to be their night.

After missing nine of their first 11 shots, the Bulldogs (1-2)never recovered.

Nicholas’ 17 points and six baskets at halftime matched the Bull-dogs’ totals. The senior guard finished with a career-best five 3-pointers in eclipsing his previous career high of 27 points.

Steve Blake had 13 points, five assists and five steals for theTerrapins, who forced 30 turnovers.

It was the 86th consecutive non-conference home victory forthe Terrapins (2-0), who never trailed in extending their overall homewinning streak to 20 - four short of the school record.

Maryland has allowed only 98 points in its first two games, itsbest start defensively since yielding a combined 91 to Penn Stateand North Carolina State in 1966.

The Bulldogs have lost 32 straight to ACC opponents since beatingClemson in 1979.

Williams used 11 players in the first half, and virtually every com-bination worked. The Terps got points from seven different playersand limited the Bulldogs to 6-for-24 shooting in building a 43-17 lead.

After Blake opened the scoring with a 3-pointer to put Marylandin front to stay, the Bulldogs committed seven turnovers and fellbehind by 19 points with nine minutes elapsed.

Williams then went with four freshmen and junior college transferJamar Smith. The Terrapins made only one basket in two minuteswith that lineup but managed to keep the margin at 19 points.

Hammack, meanwhile, accounted for nine of the Bulldogs’ first11 points - on three 3-pointers.

Game 4 • ACC/Big Ten Challenge[10/11] Indiana 80, [9/8] Maryland 74 (OT)

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana needed a third chance to finally beatMaryland.

Eight months after losing to the Terrapins in the national champi-onship game and minutes after having a potential game-winningmidcourt heave by Steve Blake waved off, the 10th-ranked Hoosiersbeat No. 9 Maryland 80-74 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

For much of the game, it looked like a replay of April’s champion-ship. Indiana relied on its outside shooting and struggled. Maryland(3-1) again went with its inside power.

But this time Hoosiers guard Tom Coverdale was healthy.Coverdale, who scored just eight points after being hobbled by a

badly sprained left ankle in April, matched his career-high with 30points in leading the Hoosiers back from a 14-point first-half deficit.

Blake had 22 points for Maryland and Ryan Randle had 20. Blake’smost important shot, however, didn’t count.

With 7.1 seconds to go, Indiana freshman Sean Kline made oneof two free throws to tie the score at 68. Indiana got the reboundand took two shots, but when Coverdale’s errant 3-pointer bouncedto midcourt, Blake picked it up, heaved it and made the basket asthe buzzer sounded.

The three officials immediately went to the scorer’s table, vieweda replay, huddled near midcourt with both coaches and then wavedthe basket off.

Indiana took advantage of its last chance to avenge April’s loss. After trailing 72-69 with 3:36 to go, Jeff Newton’s putback with

2:31 to go gave Indiana a 73-72 lead. Kline followed with a layup andMarshall Strickland hit a 3-pointer to make it 78-74. Kline hit twofree throws with 7.4 seconds left to seal the win.

Game 7[14/17] Florida 69, [18/16] Maryland 64

COLLEGE PARK — It was one of those odd streaks that no onereally noticed until it was about a decade old. Now that’s it over,Maryland doesn’t mind showing some pride over its run of 87 con-secutive home non-conference victories.

Anthony Roberson scored 20 points as No. 14 Florida beat No.18 Maryland 69-64, handing the Terrapins their first home defeatagainst a team from outside the Atlantic Coast Conference in morethan 13 years.

“It was well-earned,” Maryland coach Gary Williams said of thestreak. “I don’t think anybody gave us a game during that time. Webeat some ranked teams. We probably played the same Decemberschedule that everybody else played at this level.

“You don’t talk about those things; they just kind of happen ontheir own, but I’m very proud of that streak. Nobody else in thecountry did it, so to me it wasn’t a quirky little streak.”

Maryland’s last non-conference home defeat was 70-63 to CoppinState on Dec. 12, 1989. The streak, the longest in the nation, began 18 days later with a 110-91 victory over Alcorn State.

The run included 84 straight wins at Cole Field House and threeat the Terrapins’ new Comcast Center. The loss also ended Maryland’s21-game overall home winning streak.

Roberson went 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 on 3-point attempts. He was not a starter, but he played a team-high 33minutes. Matt Bonner added 16 points for Florida (7-2).

Roberson’s 3-pointer started a 9-0 run that put the Gators ahead48-40 with 13:18 left. They kept the lead the rest of the way, withRoberson hitting another 3-pointer to silence the crowd after atimeout, just as the Terrapins had cut the lead to two with threeminutes left.

Ryan Randle had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Maryland (4-3). The defending national champions lost for the third time in fourgames, all against teams that are now ranked in the Top 15.

Game 13[19/20] Wake Forest 81,[17/15] Maryland 72

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Maryland’s fastbreak comebackwasn’t quick enough. Wake Forest’s frontcourt dominated on bothends to withstand a furious late charge for an 81-72 victory atLawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The loss snapped No.17 Maryland’s (9-4) five-game winning streak. The Terps’ team-record 14-game ACC winning steak and sevenstraight victories over the No.19 Demon Deacons (11-1) also ended.

Maryland used its aggressive man defense to offset a poor nightunderneath. Maryland scored nine straight points, largely fueled byits defense, to close within 66-64 with 4:56 remaining. Wake Forestcountered with two baskets underneath before Steve Blake followedwith two free throws with 3:43 remaining to close within 70-66.

Wake Forest then broke Maryland’s press on center Eric Williams’dunk for a six-point lead before Blake again drained two more freethrows. Forward Tahj Holden soon added a 3-pointer to close to 73-71 with 2:43 left. Wake Forest forward Vytas Danelius counteredwith two free throws with 1:40 remaining for a four-point marginand Maryland followed with a turnover.

The Terps were outmuscled underneath regularly as the DemonDeacons prevented Maryland from getting easy points underneathor spark its transition offense. The hosts simply sealed the lanes.

Maryland’s comeback attempts were often fueled by outsideshooting and tenacious man defense. However, the low-percentageshots were offset by Wake Forest dominating inside.

After three straight blowouts the Terps came out unsettled.Maryland was sluggish for the first 10 minutes and trailed 13-6after a 7-0 Wake Forest run. The Terps kept searching for a mismatchat small forward and liberally subsituted before Calvin McCall emergedmidway through the opening half.

McCall scored eight first-half points, including six straight andMaryland twice came within four. McCall had to leave momentarilywith 1:03 left after his left cheek was cut.

Game 14[17/15] Maryland 87, [1/1] Duke 72

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Cole Field House and Comcast Centerare across campus from each other. Maryland found a bridge be-tween its old and new buildings: beating No. 1 Duke.

The 17th-ranked Terrapins beat the last undefeated team in thecountry, downing the top-ranked Blue Devils 87-72.

It was the second straight year Maryland prevailed at home whenDuke was No. 1, and it came in the new arena that sounded a lot likethe old one when the final buzzer sounded and the students rushedthe floor.

“This crowd was as good as any crowd we’ve had since we’vebeen here at Maryland,” said Gary Williams, who has been coachingat his alma mater since 1989.

Cole, which opened in 1955 and had a capacity of 14,500, wasthe place where Maryland beat six No. 1 teams. The 17,950-seatComcast Center, which opened in November, got its first taste ofthe Terrapins beating a top-ranked team.

Drew Nicholas had 24 points for the Terrapins (10-4, 3-1 AtlanticCoast Conference) and Ryan Randle had 15 points and a career-high17 rebounds as Maryland finished with a 43-32 advantage on theboards.

“I took it personally. Today we came out and said don’t worryabout points, just get every rebound,” Randle said. “Beating a Top20 team is what we wanted and needed. Beating Duke is a bigconfidence builder.”

The defending national champions also stood out at the free throwline, finishing 29-for-31. Duke (12-1, 3-1) was 9-for-20, including 5-for-13 in the second half.

“Maryland played like a veteran team and we played like a youngteam,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “They just played betterthan we did. They deserved to win. They played harder and better.”

Maryland scored the first six points of the second half to tie thegame at 43 and then turned up the defense.

Dahntay Jones, who had a career-high 26 points for Duke, hit a3-pointer with 14:21 to play that tied it for the last time at 53.

The Terrapins went on a 10-0 run with all the points coming fromnewcomers John Gilchrist and Jamar Smith. The Blue Devils went5:55 without a field goal, missing six shots and committing threeturnovers in that span as Maryland went up 75-60.

Duke, which shot 33 percent (11-for-33) in the second half aftershooting 51 percent in the opening half, never got back in it.

Tahj Holden added 10 points for the Terrapins, who took care ofthe ball in the second half, committing three turnovers for a total of16.

Freshman J.J. Redick, Duke’s leading scorer, had 13 points, twoin the second half. The Blue Devils entered the game shooting 38.1percent from 3-point range but was 7-for-22, 2-for-13 in the secondhalf.

Game 15[12/11] Maryland 81, North Carolina 66

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Maryland’s five senior starters had 456college games and a national championship among them coming intoWednesday night’s game. That experience showed against a youngNorth Carolina team.

Drew Nicholas scored 20 points and Steve Blake added 17 asthe 12th-ranked Terrapins beat the Tar Heels 81-66, their firstconference road win.

Ryan Randle added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins(11-4, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won for the third straighttime in the series. The defending NCAA champions beat the TarHeels twice last season by an average of 24 points.

The Terrapins handled the Tar Heels (11-6, 2-2) by dominatinginside, controlling the glass and playing aggressive man-to-mandefense. They outscored the Tar Heels 42-20 in the paint and had a45-35 rebound advantage.

They held the Tar Heels to 35 percent shooting and blocked nineshots to avoid any letdown after upsetting then-No. 1 Duke theprevious Saturday.

“We looked at this as our next big test,” Nicholas said. “Obviouslyour test last week was to beat the No. 1 team in the country. Nowwe came in here with the focus of getting a road win. We were ableto do that, and now we just have to keep pushing.”

Both teams came into the game with plenty of momentum, withthe Tar Heels upsetting then-No. 6 Connecticut 68-65 at the SmithCenter five days earlier.

But Maryland used two first-half runs to take a double-digit leadand answered several spurts by the Tar Heels in the second half withmomentum-killing baskets.

Rashad McCants scored 26 points to lead North Carolina, whichstarted three freshmen and two sophomores, while Jawad Williamsadded 18.

Maryland used 16-2 and 11-0 runs in the first half to take a 37-20 lead. The Tar Heels rallied, scoring the last seven points of thehalf to pull to 39-31. Raymond Felton continued the run in the secondhalf, hitting his first four shots after going 1-for-8 in the first half.

His 3-pointer from the right wing pulled North Carolina within41-39 with 17:04 left, ending a 19-4 run spanning halftime.

But the Terrapins took advantage of their size inside, going on a14-2 run. Maryland scored 12 points in the paint, the first fourcoming on drives from reserve John Gilchrist. Randle added a jumperin the lane and a tip-in.

The Terrapins also controlled the glass, taking a 10-2 edge duringthe spurt as the Tar Heels missed eight of nine shots.

Twice the Tar Heels closed within 10 points only to see Marylandanswer with 3s on its next possessions. They pulled to within 61-53on a dunk by Williams, but the Terrapins got an inside basket fromTahj Holden and a layup from Randle to kill the rally.

Game 16[12/11] Maryland 52, Clemson 47

CLEMSON, S.C. — Maryland’s Drew Nicholas wasn’t too con-cerned with how bad the 12th-ranked Terps looked, only that theyleft Littlejohn Coliseum with a victory.

“I’m sure it was a tough game to watch. This wasn’t a very prettybasketball game,” said Nicholas, who scored 14 points on 4-of-13shooting in Maryland’s 52-47 victory over Clemson.

“It was good enough to win,” Nicholas said. “At the end of theday, there’s going to be another win in the ACC column for us.”

The Terps (12-4, 5-1) came in leading the Atlantic CoastConference in 3-point shooting and were second overall in field-goalpercentage. However, they struggled throughout in this one and shotjust 19-of-56 (.339) — their worst performance of the season. Still, they won for the sixth time in seven games and held on to first placein the conference.

However, only one of them was the defending national championwho could call on five senior starters to shrug off problems and getthe job done.

It almost took the Terps too long.Their sloppy performance kept Clemson (11-4, 1-4) around until

the final minute. Edward Scott, who led the Tigers with 16 points, made four foul shots to get Clemson within three at 50-47 with1:08 remaining. However, Scott missed a wide-open 3-pointer thatwould have tied it and Steve Blake hit two foul shots to seal the win.

The Terrapins missed their first eight attempts and first six from3-point range. Nicholas was 0-for-4 as Maryland fell behind 21-9with 5:18 left in the first half.

Then the Terps turned up their defense and Nicholas finally foundhis stroke to close the half with a 15-2 run. Nicholas had two 3-pointers and an inside basket — all following Clemson turnovers —during the rally as the Terps went up 24-23.

Calvin McCall and Blake had back-to-back 3s to extend the leadto 33-27. When Nicholas made two foul shots and a short jumper,Maryland led 46-37 with 5:30 remaining.

The Tigers made only four field goals in the second half, goingover eight minutes between field goals during one stretch. Scottwas just 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. Olu Babalola, who was 5-of-8,was Clemson’s only player who shot better than 50 percent. He had12 points and seven rebounds.

Game 18[10/9] Maryland 85, Loyola 58

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland took a break from the rigorsof Atlantic Coast Conference play with a non-league game against astruggling opponent, and although the 10th-ranked Terrapins werenever tested during an 85-58 rout of Loyola (Md.), the endeavorwas certainly better than the alternative.

“This was a good game for us. Instead of practicing from Thursdayto Thursday, we were able to play this game today. That helps usinstead of going after each other every day,” Maryland coach GaryWilliams said.

Drew Nicholas scored eight of his 15 points during Maryland’sgame-opening 14-0 run, and the Terrapins led by as many as 30points in cruising to their fifth straight victory.

Ryan Randle scored 17 points and Steve Blake had 10 assistsfor the Terrapins (14-4), who stretched their home winning streakto eight with their eighth straight win over Loyola.

It was the final non-conference matchup of the regular seasonfor the defending NCAA champions, who went 8-3 outside the ACC.

Most importantly, the Terrapins got another win before endingthe regular season with a run of nine straight ACC games.

Bernard Allen led Loyola (4-15) with 16 points. The Greyhounds, who committed 27 turnovers, have lost four in a row and eight ofnine.

Coming off an impressive 75-60 win over NC State, Marylanddispelled any possibility of a letdown with a torrid start. Tahj Holdenscored off an offensive rebound and Nicholas followed with eightstraight points, including two 3-pointers to make it 10-0.

Holden then made a layup and Randle followed with a reverselayup before Delonnie Southall scored the Greyhounds’ initial pointson a layup with 15:12 left in the half.

It was 36-21 before a layup by Randle sparked a 12-2 spree thatput Maryland up by 25. Sophomore Andre Collins fueled the run withtwo straight 3-pointers, his only points of the game.

Game 21[16/15] Maryland 74, Florida State 72

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Maryland coach Gary Williams loves hav-ing a senior point guard on the court in close road games. SteveBlake, scored Maryland’s final seven points, including four free throwsin the final 17.5 seconds, as the 16th-ranked Terrapins reboundedfrom two straight losses with a 74-72 victory at Florida State.

“There is no one better when the game gets tough,” Williamssaid. “When the game is on the line, he’s there for us.”

Blake, who finished with 15 points, made a 3-pointer from thecorner to break a 67-67 tie with 2:36 left and then clinched the winwith his clutch free throws.

“I wanted to shoot those free throws,” Blake said. “I’d ratherhave the blame on me if we missed.”

Maryland (15-6, 7-3 ACC) was leading the league until successivelosses last week to Virginia and Georgia Tech.

“After the last two games, our confidence was not good,” Williamssaid. “This was a big win for the rest of the season.”

The Terps, who trail ACC leader Wake Forest by a game in theloss column, shot just 38.3 percent from the field, but hit 20 of 23free throws.

Florida State (11-10, 2-8 ACC) got within a point at 70-69 onTodd Galloway’s layup with 17.5 seconds left and Blake was fouledon the inbounds pass before any time could go off the clock.

Blake hit both free throws for a 72-69 lead and was fouled againwith 4.9 seconds remaining after a missed Florida State shot. Heagain hit both tries as Maryland went ahead 74-69.

Game 22[13/13] Maryland 90,[10/11] Wake Forest 67

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A strange afternoon worked out per-fectly for No. 13 Maryland, which stormed past 10th-ranked WakeForest to take over first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Steve Blake had 21 points and nine assists, and Drew Nicholasscored 19 as the Terrapins handed the Demon Deacons their most

lopsided loss of the season, 90-67, in a game delayed by a daybecause of a blizzard.

Fearing that most fans would be unable to attend the game be-cause of a storm that dumped more than two feet of snow in thearea, Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow spent much of the morn-ing trying to push the game back to next month.

But the Terrapins were eager to get on the court and avenge an81-72 loss at Wake Forest last month.

Ryan Randle had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Maryland (16-6,8-3), which wrestled away the top spot in the ACC from Wake For-est (17-4, 7-3) in convincing fashion.

Wake Forest, which led the nation in rebounding differential (plus12.5), was outrebounded for the first time this season, 44-24.

The defending NCAA champions have won seven of eight overallagainst the Demon Deacons and five straight at home.

The Demon Deacons were hoping to build on Thursday’s double-overtime victory over Duke. But after cutting a 17-point deficit tosix in the second half, Wake Forest made only one basket in the final10 minutes.

The Comcast Center - which seats 17,950 - was nearly filled, even though the game was hastily rescheduled from Sunday night. The starting time of 5 p.m. was not announced until well after noonon Monday.

It turned out to be a lost three-day weekend for the DemonDeacons, who beat the snow but were stuck in their College Parkhotel waiting to learn if the first-place showdown would take place.

Up by 10 at halftime, Maryland used a 3-pointer by Tahj Holdenand baskets by Randle and McCall at the outset of the second halfto make it 48-31.

Game 23[8/8] Duke 75, [13/13] Maryland 70

DURHAM, N.C. — Dahntay Jones scored 21 points and J.J.Redick added 17 as the eighth-ranked Blue Devils ran their winningstreak in Cameron Indoor Stadium to 26 straight with a 75-70victory over No. 13 Maryland.

After a rough few weeks, Duke (18-4, 8-4) is tied with thedefending national champion Terrapins (16-7, 8-4) for second placein the Atlantic Coast Conference with four league games remaining.

The Terrapins beat Duke 87-72 on Jan. 18 by dominating thesecond half. But this time around it was the Blue Devils who closedthe deal in the final minutes after leading 37-33 at halftime.

Steve Blake missed a contested 3-pointer with 2 seconds leftthat could have tied it for the Terrapins, but he threw up an air balland Redick closed it out with two free throws.

Shelden Williams also came up big for the Blue Devils. Thefreshmen had three points in 13 minutes in the first meeting betweenthe last two national champs, but Williams showed Maryland’sexperienced big men early that he had matured. He finished with 13

points, 11 rebounds and six of Duke’s season-high 13 blocked shots.Tahj Holden led Maryland with a career-high 18 points, but Drew

Nicholas, who scored 24 against Duke a month ago, was held toeight.

Each team started slowly in the second half before Duke went up67-57 with 5:49 left as Redick made two long 3-pointers and Joneshad a three-point play in a span of 1:47.

But the only team with a winning ACC road record coming inwould make one last stand, pulling within two with 3:18 remaining.Jones then made two free throws and Daniel Ewing nailed a 3-pointerwith 2 seconds left on the shot clock to give Duke a 73-66 lead.

Duke was guarding a three-point lead in the final 45 seconds andtried to run the clock down, but Ewing lost it in the lane, setting upBlake’s final shot that came up short.

Game 24[13/13] Maryland 96, North Carolina 56

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Beating North Carolina is no longer abig deal for Maryland.

The defending NCAA champion Terrapins are now among thenation’s elite, while the once-mighty Tar Heels are in the midst of amajor rebuilding effort.

Yet, given the events leading up to this ACC game, it was almostimpossible to envision a blowout of record-breaking proportions.

Steve Blake scored 18 points and Drew Nicholas had 17 as No.13 Maryland concluded a demanding week by crushing North Carolina96-56, the second-most lopsided ACC victory in school history.

Ryan Randle scored 16 points for the Terrapins, who have wonfour straight against North Carolina for the first time since 1930-32. It was Maryland’s largest margin of victory in the 79-year series, eclipsing the 33-point blowout the Terps enjoyed at home last season.

The most surprising aspect of the rout was that it was Maryland’sthird game in six days. The Terrapins (17-7, 9-4) beat No. 10 WakeForest at home Monday in a game delayed by snow, then lost on theroad against No. 8 Duke on Wednesday before rebounding to beatthe Tar Heels (14-12, 4-8) for the fifth time in seven tries.

North Carolina’s arrival at the Comcast Center was delayed bya torrential rain, but coach Matt Doherty said that had nothing todo with the resounding defeat, which matched the third-worst inUNC history.

Maryland had previously recorded two 40-point wins in ACC play, the last one a 99-59 rout of South Carolina in 1958. The victorymoved the Terrapins within percentage points of first-place WakeForest in the ACC.

Maryland let a 13-point halftime lead dwindle to 47-40 beforeBlake scored seven points in a 13-2 run that gave the Terrapinssome breathing room.

After the Tar Heels closed to 62-47, freshman John Gilchrist hita runner in the lane, Jamar Smith slammed home an alley-oop passfrom Calvin McCall, and Andre Collins and Randle made layups tostart a 14-0 spurt that put the Terrapins up by 29.

Melvin Scott scored 12 points and Rashad McCants had 11 forNorth Carolina, 1-6 on the road in the conference this season.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina didn’t want to think aboutits last meeting with Maryland, when a 40-point victory by the Terra-pins saddled the Tar Heels with their worst conference loss in history.

In the back of their minds, the sting from that defeat Feb. 22never went away.

But the Tar Heels eased much of the pain by bouncing thedefending national champions out of the Atlantic Coast Conferencetournament with an 84-72 victory in the quarterfinals.

Jawad Williams scored a career-high 25 points, Raymond Feltonhad 20 points and 10 assists and Melvin Scott added a career-high19 points to lead the seventh-seeded Tar Heels (17-14).

North Carolina, which trailed almost the entire first half, cameout swinging in the final 20 minutes.

Playing without Jackie Manuel, their best defender, who went outfour minutes into the game with a strained right arch, the Tar Heelswere able to stifle Nicholas while opening up their offense.

Game 29 • NCAA First Round[17/17] Maryland 75, UNC Wilmington 73

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Drew Nicholas wasn’t supposed to havethe ball. Good thing the intended play didn’t work out.

Nicholas dribbled nearly the length of the court and swished adesperation 3-pointer as the horn sounded, giving defending nationalchampion Maryland an improbable 75-73 victory over North Carolina-Wilmington at the NCAA South Regional.

The sixth-seeded Terrapins (20-9) wanted Steve Blake to havethe ball on the final play, but UNC-Wilmington’s swarming defensekept him from getting it.

So Nicholas got the inbounds pass and took off up the right side ofthe court. With less than a second remaining, he managed to launch afallaway 3 off his back foot with Anthony Terrell right in his face.

“I took the ball as far as I could and tried to make somethinghappen,” Nicholas said. “I know the shot probably didn’t look theprettiest, but it went in. I really couldn’t believe it when it went through.”

Neither could UNC-Wilmington coach Brad Brownell, who collapsedto the court in disbelief.

“We did everything we could,” he said. “Give credit to DrewNicholas. He made the game-winner.”

Aaron Coombs sank two free throws with 5 seconds left, givingthe 11th-seeded Seahawks a 73-72 lead and putting them in positionto pull off a tourney surprise for the second year in a row.

Instead, Maryland avoided becoming the first defending championsince UCLA in 1996 to get knocked out in the first round.

After Nicholas’ shot, several Maryland players raced off the courtin delirium, while the Seahawks stood around in a daze.

The officials called everyone back to look at the video replay. Itclearly showed that Nicholas got the shot off with a 0.5 seconds tospare, giving Maryland a chance to celebrate again.

UNC-Wilmington freshman John Goldsberry nearly stole the show.He set a tournament record by going 8-of-8 from outside the 3-point arc, finishing with a career-high 26 points. He broke the 7-of-7 mark set by Florida State’s Sam Cassell in 1993.

Goldsberry stepped up when Brett Blizzard, the Seahawks’ leadingscorer, struggled most of the night.

Nicholas scored 22 points, including 5-of-8 from outside the arc.

Just making the NCAA tournament was the challenge Williamsgave his Terrapins this season after losing four starters - includingLonny Baxter, Juan Dixon and Chris Wilcox - from last year’schampionship squad.

The Terps came in with their lowest seed since a No. 7 in 1996.Now, they’re in the round of 16 for the 13th time.

The Musketeers scored the first five points, but Marylandanswered with a 19-4 run and led by as many as 20 points in thefirst half. Then Xavier almost made it interesting as West, held to 2-of-8 shooting in the first half, got going in the second.

The Musketeers kept whittling away as West either shot or passedoff to teammates. Romain Sato hit the first of two free throws at6:06 to get Xavier to 60-57.That was as close as they got.
