THERE ARE MANY “CUPS OF WATER”

Don’t get caught up in taking this scripture literally. Yes, you may give someone a glass of water, invite the staff of your parish for a meal, hand an apple or a dollar bill to a homeless person, or take a shift in a shelter. But sometimes, what is being asked for is simply a kind word or a helping hand. Seeing an elderly person having trouble and helping them through the crosswalk, calming someone’s toddler in the grocery store while they pay their bill. Offer a smile, a compliment, or a word of encouragement. Say hello to a stranger. We do not know who is parched with loneliness or feeling overwhelmed. Look for the Christ in others and respond with simple kindness and hospitality.

First Reading — Elisha promises a baby son to the hospitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a).

Psalm — For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading — We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4,8-11).

Gospel — Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to another will surely be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42).

Bishop Pates Announces the Fall Re-Opening

of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Joliet

June 16, 2020

JOLIET, IL-- Bishop Richard Pates, Apostolic

Administrator of the Diocese of Joliet, announced

today that the 52 Catholic schools in the diocese will

open this Fall.

The bishop has appointed a task force headed by

Fr. Burke Masters to prepare the schools so that

each will fully comply with necessary provisions to

make the particular school safe in the face of the

coronavirus pandemic.

“The stakeholders of our schools – parents and

children, administrators and teachers, priests and

parishioners – very much desire to see our schools

fully functioning this Fall,” Bishop Pates said.

He also noted that the re-opening of diocesan

parishes has gone very well, with the vast majority of

parishes now celebrating Mass again. In order to

open, each of the parishes had to be certified that

certain, defined safety measures were in place. A

similar certification process will be developed for our

schools.

“All connected with our Catholic schools eagerly

await the new school year to once again benefit from

the academic excellence and Catholic identity that

characterize these schools.”

Angel of God

My guardian dear

to whom God’s love

commits me here.

Ever this day, be at my side,

to light and guard,

to rule and guide.

Amen

To the men of Holy Spirit parish:

Please consider joining the Knights of Columbus, Holy Spirit council. We are centered around the parish and the wider community. The time commitment is totally up to you! Take part in as many activities as your schedule allows. We promise that you will feel uplifted many times over by the good works than you ever could expect; while having a positive impact in the community.

Why we need YOU….

The more active Knights there are, the broader our skill sets and collective creative minds which enable us to do more for our council, parish, and community.

The Catholic faith is being challenged by many outside factors. Joining the Knights and getting involved is an excellent way to rekindle the faith in our households and demonstrate the importance of serving others.

The Knights need new ideas and perspectives and we are interested in learning from our young men; ages 18 and above. This is a new time for the KC’s and we welcome our young men to become leaders.

Please contact Tony Magrady to have a cup of coffee or conversation about how we can best serve our community. [email protected]

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is Here to Help

We are grateful to our St. Vincent de Paul Society for all the help it gives to parishioners in need. And thank you to all of you for your donations which make that work possible.

If you are in financial crisis because of the ‘stay at home’ order or a change in your job situation, please contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society for help.

It can be difficult to admit we need help, but please know that everything the SVdP Society does is completely confidential. Please call 630-922-0081.

For most cultures, the image of a mountain rising out of the ordinary level of human affairs has been a universal religious symbol conveying the presence of God. Daily conferences will offer a process of examining the journey which takes us to the

mountaintop and back as we discover how to acknowledge, embrace, and utilize the gift which is uniquely ours to share.

Facilitator: Fr. Michael Jennrich, OFM has served in a variety of ministries throughout the United States, including street ministry, retreat work, parish work, campus ministry, and

hospice chaplaincy.
