Changes to Course compared to 2002: • Day 1 - ‘High Plains’ replaced ‘Deloraine’; • Day 2 - day ended back in Launceston instead of Hobart; ‘Pyengana’ added after ‘Weldborough’; a town stage was held

    as ‘Perth’; • Day 3 - the cars travelled from Launceston to Hobart before tackling ‘Grasstree Hill’ as the first targa stage of the day;

‘Mount Nelson’ was dropped; • Day 4 - unchanged from 2002; • Day 5 - ‘Ellendale’ continued to be dropped.

2: TARGA TASMANIA TOURING CATEGORY Taking an idea from Classic Adelaide (of which Tom Snooks was now Clerk of Course) of adopting a Touring Class a number of participants were invited by Octagon to the 2003 event. Not everyone wanted to drive their vehicle hard nor did they want to risk damaging it. The Tour allowed participants (in groups of ten cars) to drive over selected closed-to-the-public targa stages some 45 minutes ahead of the first competition vehicle. They were bunched up with the organiser’s vehicles in front and rear of each group. There was no competition as the car had be driven according to the posted speed limits and there was no timing and without the inconvenience and expense of modifying the car,

    3: ENTRIES

Targa Tasmania Modern Competition was for late model high performance cars where the driver and the navigator teamed together aiming at category and outright victory. Judging by previous years’ vehicle preparation and reliability could provide a winning edge and, for some crews, the navigators’ concentration and the accuracy of pace notes were a telling factor in the success achieved by the crew.

However, in order to maintain safety standards to satisfy authorities (both civil within Tasmania and the World and Australian Controlling Bodies (FIA and CAMS) 2003 saw the start of a progressive change to bring the top end categories (Categories 8 & 9) back towards standard. The regulations from 2003 excluded extensively modified cars so as to retard their ultimate speeds, but allowed limited modification to be made to allow cars to be more suitable for competition. It was intended that the regulations would apply to the Classic Competition Category 7 in 2004. The Vehicle Selection Policy is outlined in the Overview. A field of 253 competition crews faced the starter, of which 226 finished, giving a finishing rate of 82%. This was equal third highest number of competitors in the 12 years of the event - 299 in 2000, 279 in 1994 and 253 in each of 2001 and 2003.

Historic Competition (4 starters) A disappointing field of only three Historic Competition cars were entered, all from Victoria. John and Andrew Lawson changed their car from Alfa Romeo of the past few years to a 1926 Amilcar Grand Sport, which was the Flag Car for 2003. Michael Hipkins/Mark Burns, fourth in 2002 entered their 1925 Vauxhall 30-98, whilst John Felder/Craig De Somerville again competed in the 1930 Oakland 8-101. Touring Classic Competition (11 starters) Touring Classic Competition winners in 2001 and 2002, Phillip and Justin Nichols, again entered their 1958 Austin Healey Sprite, whilst the ‘arch-enemy’ crew of Brian Titheradge/John Shuttle were in their regular 1955 Jaguar XK140 FHC, which they drove to second place in 2001, third in 1999 and fourth in 2000. Also entered was Martin Utber/Nicholas Langford in their 1961 Vauxhall Cresta, which they took to fifth outright in 2002. Classic Competition (132 starters) With a field of 132 the Classic Competition Top Ten looked wide open. The 2002 Classic Competition winners, Rex Broadbent/Michael Goedheer, seized the opportunity to run in the Modern Competition in a Porsche Cup 911 GT3, whilst second in 2002, Peter O’Keefe, crashed his Holden Torana SLR5000 in an event prior to Targa Tasmania and it suffered massive frontage damage. Thus two potential winners of this Competition did not start. Third placed in 2002, Graham Copeland/Jon Siddon again entered their 1969 Datsun H510 1800, whilst other high placegetters such as Geoff Taylor/Lee Harper (1974 Porsche 911 Carrera), Barry Faux/Ray Pollar (1979 Mazda RX7), Paul Stuart, with Mike Harrod (1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7), and often placed in the Top Ten Henry and Roslyn Draper in their 1961 Morris Mini Minor.

Matthew Hunter and James Game in the 1975 Ford Escort RS2000

Modern Competition (94 starters) The entry for this competition looked like being the most competitive in the 12 year history of the event, with Jim Richards/Barry Oliver at the head of any list of potential winners. This year they retained their 2000 Porsche 911 Turbo. The seven times Bathurst 1000 winner, also four times Australian Touring Car Champion, together with his six Targa Tasmania wins made him a very formidable competitor to beat in the Modern Competition. Crews to consider for the top placings were Tony Quinn/Keith Wenn in their 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo (second in 2001), Steve Glenney/Clayton Lang crewing a 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R, and in a similar vehicle Nissan Jeff and Nerida Beable who were fourth in 2002, and the entry for Rex Broadbent/Michael Goedheer (1999 Porsche 911 GT3), transferring from the Classic Competition which they won in 2002. Peter Brock, navigated by son James, was entered in a 2002 Holden Monaro CV8 Turbo and John and Jason White crewed a 2001 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec N1. One crew which finished regularly in the Top Ten was Lynn Rattray/Tony Best, from Tasmania. They finished five times in the Ten and this year they entered a very competitive 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX.

Of much interest was the entry of Colin Bond, with ace Formula One commentator Murray Walker in a 2002 Toyota Camry Sportive. A noticeable absentee from 2003 was Ray Lintott, who was often placed in the Top Ten, and was second to Jim Richards in 1996 and 1997, and he came third in 1995. Touring (16 starters) See list above

    6: COMPETITION

Chicanes Introduced Widely Around Course With each passing Targa Tasmania the Modern Competition cars became faster and faster and more and more cars started to exceed the 132km/h limit which was arbitrarily set for each stage. Chicanes were introduced to slow competitors sufficiently to get the overall average for a stage down to or below 132km/h. Distance countdown warning signs were placed on the side of the road at 300, 200 and 100 metres on the approach to the chicanes.

For 2003 chicanes were set up in Devonport, Sheffield, Quamby Brook (2 chicanes), Cranbrook, Oyster Cove, Rosebery (2), Mount Arrowsmith (3) and Ellendale (3). They were set up on the faster parts of the stages. Historic Competition John and Andrew Lawson had a runaway win in the very small Historic Competition. They took their 1926 Amilcar Grand Sport to a 26 minutes win from John Felder/Craig De Somerville (1930 Oakland 8-101), with two minutes then to third place of Michael Hipkins/Mark Burns in their 1925 Vauxhall 30-98. Touring Classic Competition Brian Titheradge/John Shuttle at last took their 1955 Jaguar XK140 FHC to a win in the Touring Classic Competition, having been placed second in 2001, third in 1999 and fourth in 2000. They won by just over a minute from Duncan and Bronwyn Matheson in their 1964 Morris Cooper, with Martin Utber/Nicholas Langford a further 2 minutes plus in their 1961 Vauxhall Cresta. Brent and Justyn Haines (1960 Jaguar Mk11) came home fourth, a further 17 minutes later, and then another five minute gap to David Currow/Bill Thomas (1965 Fiat Abarth 698 SS). Philip and Justin Nicolls run of being placed at the top of the field crewing their 1958 Austin Healey Sprite since the Touring Classic Competition was introduced came to an end when they finished eighth. Previously they were second in both 1999 and 2000, and first in 2001 and 2002.

Martin Utber/Nicholas Langford came third outright in their 1961 Vauxhall Cresta

Classic Competition Graham Copeland/Jon Siddons, in their 1969 Datsun H510 1800, took off a very convincing win, finishing more than eight minutes ahead of their nearest rival. However, the next six placings finished within two minutes of each other. Second place went to Targa Tasmania veteran Geoff Taylor, navigated by Lee Harper, in his 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera, with a further 40 seconds to another event veteran crew Brian and Linda Dermott driving their 1962 Austin Healey 3000 Mk11; then 21 seconds to John Williamson/David Patterson (1960 Austin Healey Sprite), followed in fifth place after another seven seconds was Barry Faux/Rally Pollar (1979 Mazda RX7) and in sixth was 2001 winner Paul Stuart with Mike Harrod in his 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7, by a further twenty seconds.

Modern Competition The Modern Competition was a very keen tussle with second placed Steve Glenney/Clayton Lang in their 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R only being just over a minute behind seven times Modern Competition Winners Jim Richards/Barry Oliver (2000 Porsche 911 Turbo). This winning margin was the closest in all of the Richards/Oliver wins.

Steve Glenney/Clayton Lang took off an excellent second place in their 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R.

Here they are on the ‘Quamby Brook’ Targa Stage Transferring from the Classic Competition, which they won in 2002, Rex Broadbent/Michael Goedheer took their 1999 Porsche 911 GT3 to third place, 30 seconds behind Glenney/Lang, with Greg Harwood/Mark Perry (fifth in 2002) in their 1995 Porsche 911 Turbo less than a minute later. Second placegetters in 2001, Tony Quinn/Keith Wenn brought their 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo home fifth 50 seconds behind Quinn, whilst a further three minutes plus saw Peter and James Brock finished sixth in their 2002 Holden Monaro CV8 Turbo. Tasmanians Lynn Rattray/Tony Jackson continue their run of placings in the Top Ten with ninth place, this being the sixth time in the Top Ten.

    7: MURRAY WALKER

Targa Tasmania was very honoured to have Murray Walker as a genuine navigator, for Colin Bond, in a 2002 Camry Sportive.

Murray Walker navigated for Colin Bond in a Toyota 3 litre Camry Sportive in the Modern Showroom Category

to finish 45th in the Modern Competition. Murray Walker, the ‘Voice’ of the FIA Formula One races for many, many years to the end of 2001, teamed up with Australia Rally and Race Champion Colin Bond as the navigator in a Toyota Camry Sportive. Colin Bond had heard that Murray wanted to do a Targa Tasmania and “when we spoke at the Sydney Motor Show which he attended he said he was very keen. After that he contacted Toyota and things came together pretty quickly.” Extract from the 2003 Targa Tasmania video produced by Southern Cross Television, Tasmania at the end of the event Quote:

“I would like you to admire my Finishers Medallion because I am very, very proud of it and it is going to be hanging on my study wall in England when I get there. I thought it was an absolutely WONDERFUL event and I am full of reactions to it. Most of all I have never ever seen such enthusiasm everywhere for an event anywhere in the world. It has been quite incredible. Heaven knows how many events I have seen and I have never seen the populous turning out cheering competitors for five days. I’ve never been to Tasmania and I think the scenery is wonderful and I think it’s a fabulous island. The event is absolutely unique and the camaraderie we have been in is wonderful. I have no criticisms and a lot of praise for Targa Tasmania.”
