Women would: Pull hair through crownless hat and spread hair

over brim. Apply mixture of black sulfur, alum, and honey

and sit in the sun until the hair has turned a golden.

It wasn’t until the middle of the century that a common woman dying her hair was accepted.

Color Bath, by Clairol

Until late 1950 people could only darken their hair. They had to bleach their hair first, and then apply a toner. In 1950 Clairol introduced Clairol Hair Color Bath.

Allowed someone to lighten their hair, without bleaching, in a one-step process
