Dear Friends,

On behalf of Starlight Theatre’s Board of Directors, I extend our deepest appreciation to the peopleand organizations listed herein, whose generosity continues to enhance and improve something we alltreasure – the “Starlight Experience.”

In April 2003, we announced the Future Generations Campaign, the largest, most comprehensivecapital campaign in the organization’s history. Since then, we have successfully applied for andreceived the support of two national foundations outside our community — The J.E. and L.E. MabeeFoundation (Tulsa, Okla.) and The Kresge Foundation (Troy, Mich.).

The support from these foundations came as challenge grants in order toincite additional private support. We met the Mabee Challenge in April 2004and subsequently received their $1 million gift. Our Kresge challenge, to complete the entire Campaign by October 1, 2006, is still “on the table” —and we’ll need to double (or more) the Campaign donor roster publishedinside in order to meet their challenge and receive their $950,000 gift.

At publication, we have raised just over $12.5million, 82% of our $15.25 million goal.

Finding gifts to complete the Future Generations Campaign is thefundraising challenge immediately ahead of us in the current fiscal year. That will require adding another $2.75 million for endowment fundsand technology upgrades in addition to the significant dollars alreadyraised for buildings, educational programs and seed money for our endowment.

Looking even further down the road, our long-range fundraising strategy is to continue growing theStarlight Theatre Annual Fund, which was launched simultaneously with the Campaign in 2003.Without ongoing yearly support from donors above and beyond earned revenue for operations,Starlight would not otherwise be able to introduce new internship programs (like the Starlight STARS,for high school age students), purchase necessary equipment (such as a commercial-grade refrigeratorfor our canteen, where we feed as many as 200 performers and artistic staff each week during aBroadway show or concert) or partner with other theatres and creative staff to provide investmentfunding for new shows to go on road tours (including both the Broadway and touring versions ofSpamalot as recent Starlight investment examples).

As a member and now immediate past Chairman of the Board, I have witnessed firsthand the dynamic progress underway both physically at the Theatre and programmatically — both entirelymade possible by donor support. I invite you — encourage you — to continue this journey with us.

Once again, our sincere gratitude to all whose names are published in this report, reflecting our 2005fiscal year. It is your generosity that makes possible such an ambitious period of growth and renewalfor Starlight Theatre.

Best personal regards,

Peggy DunnChairman of the Board, 2004-2005Co-Chairman, Future Generations Campaign

Dear Friends of Starlight,

As you view our first ever Annual Report, we hope you are pleasantly surprised. While thefinancial information may or may not differ from your expectations, we suspect that the breadthand depth of our organization may exceed what you might have thought.

This is not an Annual Report about that brick and mortar place we know and love calledStarlight Theatre, although it is certainly referred to often herein. Instead, we hope this reportserves as a snapshot of the people, and their activities and efforts, who make the Starlight TheatreAssociation of Kansas City, Inc. a successful not-for-profit performing arts organization. Successful in financial terms, but just as importantly, successful in artistic and human terms, for it is all of these aspects that make us what we are today.

Our Board of Directors, volunteers, sponsors, donors, subscribers, various partners and staff are the people who make our organization what it is at this time: a nationally-recognized producer of quality musical theatre and concert attractions, a leader in developing cutting edge curriculum-based educationalprograms, a caring partner for the greater Kansas City community,an impassioned protector of one of our nation’s most beautiful and historic theatres, and an entrepreneurial organization aware of the continual evolution required for any business or organization to succeed.

As you review this report, let us know of any questions or comments that may arise. Better yet, let us know if you would like to get even more involvedwith our organization. As Sir Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. Wemake a life by what we give.” We greatly appreciate all that is given to Starlight by so many.People….making the journey meaningful and magical.

Blue Star AwardsThe Blue Star Awards program isdesigned to recognize outstandingachievement in musical theatreamong high school students. Thegoal is to bring together the highschool theatrical programs in themetropolitan and outlying KansasCity areas and recognize the out-standing talent among our youth.

Starlight Theatre along with BlueCross Blue Shield of Kansas City, invite all high schools to participate

in this exciting program that pro-vides overdue acknowledgement to excellence in production and performance in high school musicaltheatre. With professional adjudica-tors and presenters, the Blue StarCeremony recognizes outstandingachievement in 23 areas of musicaltheatre…AND recognizes one maleand one female high school studentfor their outstanding contributionsto high school musical theatre withthe Rising Star Scholarship (high-lighted below).

The Blue Star adjudicators anony-mously attend shows to observe, cri-tique and commend performanceand production. Adjudicator reportsare compiled and sent back to eachparticipating school. A NominatingCommittee reviews all the evalua-tions as well as support materialssent in from each school and makesthe official nominations. Students from all of the Blue Starschools, in addition to the generalpublic, gather together under thestars at Starlight Theatre for theannual Blue Star Ceremony, KansasCity’s very own Tony®AwardCeremony for high schools. Fivestudents from each school performin an opening number. Schoolsnominated for Overall Productioneach perform one of their musicalnumbers on stage. the majestic starlight theatre

What do you think ofwhen someone says“Starlight Theatre”?

Most people answer “Broadwaymusicals” or “concerts.” Whenprobed, however, that answerquickly expands to include memories of attending eventsthere as a child, or that first date,or the gathering offriends “under thestars” for a socialnight out.

Starlight Theatreis, of course, aboutthe entertainmentthat graces our stage, but it is also muchmore. A communitygathers together in the majestic7,928-seat outdoor amphitheatrefor many reasons, but all share thecommon bond of enjoying liveprofessional entertainment in arelaxed and beautiful setting.

For that setting, we can thankEdward Buehler Delk, whodesigned the theatre in 1949 andwho is also well known as thedesigner of another Kansas Citylandmark called the Country ClubPlaza. Both examples of his archi-tecture stand out to this day with

beauty and gracethat is timeless andclassic. The manyimprovements tothe theatre thathave occurred sinceit opened in 1950have adhered to hisarchitectural vision

of a “lastingmemorial tothe citizensof our community”which wasconstructedas a celebra-tion of theCity ofKansas City’s

Centennial.Since the “Thrills of a Century”

inaugurated our stage in 1950,Starlight Theatre has become synonymous with top quality

entertainment at themost affordable pricespossible, while addingan unparalleled degreeof service and beauty. With the completionof the Jeannette andJerome CohenCommunity Stage in2000, the entertain-ment offerings havetaken a giant step forward with theintroduction offirst run nation-al tours direct

from Broadway performingalongside classics of theAmerican musical theatrelibrary, while internationalrecording artists have founda jewel of a new performancespace here in America’sheartland.

While showselection is areminder of thefact that “youcan’t please allthe people all thetime,” most audi-ence membershave come torealize that everyshow on ourstage will be produced in amanner befittingof this majestictheatre, and that it is theexperience ofattendingStarlight, oftenwith family

and/or friends, that adds that extra ingredient making it themost outstanding value in liveentertainment.

The Starlight Experience. Thetrain whistle blows nightly around9:20 p.m. Various animals at theKansas City Zoo remind us of theirpresence. Almost 8,000 peopleground us in the reality that weare not alone and that there areothers like us who care about ourfamily and friends, our communityand the that make Kansas City avery special place indeed. We hope you continue to enjoy theExperience.

production, distribution, marketing, finance and opera-tions in a typical work environment, including howeach department must co-exist and support each other. The curriculum utilized a two-to-four week simulationtheoretically operating a company that produced eitherguns & butter or widgets.

Starlight replaced the generic Acme scenario with a chal-lenge to operate Starlight Theatre and produce a show oftheir choosing (from a list of four). Students interviewfor positions in each department and make, in thecourse of the simulation, every decision we make in our business. The simulation provides opportunities toinvolve the theatre department and communicationsclasses, thereby also offering multi-disciplinary programming in a single classroom.

As the simulation progresses, real-life unanticipatedoccurrences are introduced in the classroom to teach crisis management and company-wide teamwork. Afterincubating the simulation at Liberty High School forfour classes over four separate semesters, there was clearindication that the simulation was effective. Teachersbecame excited about the class, students became attentive and engaged, and final test scores showedretention of the knowledge at higher levels than scorespre-simulation.

With a significant grant from the Ewing MarionKauffman Foundation, Project Explore (the consultantswho created Earth Works™, among many other notableprograms) has been retained to refine and package thecurriculum and create a teacher’s manual to easily facilitate the program. This creative and entrepreneurialapproach to collaborative teaching serves as a shiningexample of how to utilize the performing arts in curriculum based educational efforts… and will be available to unlimited high schools for use upon completion.

Growing up attending

Starlight productions is an

experience treasured by

many Kansas Citians. For Rosalyn

Jacobson and Elaine Rubin, sisters

née Cohen, it was a way of life.

Jerry and Jeannette Cohen’s

daughters shared a handful of

recollections with Starlight during

an interview in the Jacobson home.

Piggyback rides from Paul Lynde,

dinner with Brenda Lee and parties

and dress rehearsals with Chita

Rivera, Jeanette MacDonald and

Gisele Mackenzie made up their

childhoods.

Elaine grew up performing on

the Starlight stage and Rosalyn

danced in two shows featuring local

high school girls.

The conversation was truly an

animated dialogue between the two

sisters as they reminisced —

Elaine: My parents lovedStarlight. And it absolutely influ-enced me. I turned what I learnedat Starlight into a business.

Rosalyn: I can’t carry a tune, butI took Elaine to shows andrehearsals, so I got the car and hadthe opportunity to meet all thestars. And the enjoyment has comedown through the generations inour family. My parents lovedStarlight. We have wonderfulmemories of Starlight. And mygrandson was there to see Camelot on his fifth birthday. Bobannounced his birthday from stageand Ariel hasn’t stopped talkingabout that ever since. His room isall done in knights and he dreamsabout that night.

Elaine: Starlight is such a senti-mental thing. For me, it’s how Ikeep my Dad and Mom alive. AndI’ll never forget how much fun Ihad in the summer. Sunday wasStarlight. That’s what you did.Being at Starlight truly was a wayof life for us.

As did their parents, Elaine andRosalyn have made generous gifts toStarlight Theatre, both for construc-tion elements included in the FutureGenerations Campaign and in theirparents’ names to the Campaign andto support the Rising Star Scholarshipprogram. We asked them respectivelyabout the greatest reward receivedthrough their philanthropy.

Rosalyn: Hopefully, we can con-tinue our parent’s dedication ofhelping make Kansas City a betterplace to live. We are pleased tohave been asked to invest moneyin such wonderful organizations asStarlight.

Elaine: Life without the artswould be like having a meal, butnot having dessert. It is the parteveryone looks forward to. It’s atreat. As an audience member,Starlight gives people of all agesthe chance to be exposed to themagic of theater! It lets peopleescape for a few hours, into aworld of imagination and creativi-ty. It has the potential to changepeoples’ lives, to make them laugh,to make them cry, and to leavethem feeling uplifted. As a per-former, the half hour call before aperformance is very exciting, verypowerful. And on that stage look-ing out at so many seats…there ishardly anything like that aroundanymore.

Rosalyn: And it thrills me thatBob still calls it the “Jeannette &Jerome Cohen Stage.” It was excit-ing to see my parents enjoy theirdream of a new stage completedduring their lifetime. Dad’s spiritcontinues to live on at Starlight.

Elaine: It’s still there.

After a moment of thoughtful silence,Rosalyn adds quietly: That’s one ofmy parents’ legacies.

Eight-year-oldElaine Cohenappeared withnumerous otherKansas City children inStarlight’s production of“Babes inToyland.”

I’ll never forget how

Broadway ticket prices at

Starlight Theatre remain

as low as $9. But this

limits Starlight’s capacity to offer

outreach and educational pro-

gramming to our community. To

bridge the gap, Starlight seeks

charitable contributions that will

enable it to expand and launch

programs, making you as essen-

tial to Starlight as Rodgers to

Hammerstein. Charitable gifts to

Starlight Theatre allow us to

improve the Starlight STARS high

school summer internship pro-

gram and expand master classes

which offer specialized theatre

training to high school and

college students and their

instructorsand assist with the

maintenance and preservation

of the theatre itself.

The Board of Directors,

performers, and staff at

Starlight Theatre gratefully

acknowledge those listed

Your Legacy Gift That You Designate Today Will Be the

Foundation for Future Tomorrows. As we continue physical improvements at Starlight associated with the Future GenerationsCampaign, our research on Swope Park hasuncovered a presentation book on signage withinthe park. In the concluding pages of the book it iswritten:

Historically a great society is evidenced by the gifts that each succeeding generation of its citizenry leaves to the next. Kansas City was blessed with exceptional parents.

That parentage of legacies can continue through you and your family. Your gift through a variety ofgift planning opportunities will provide support, promote stability and produce a permanent legacyat Starlight Theatre.

Starlight Theatre was pleased to host

its second New York City trip on

September 16-18, 2005. Among the

many activities offered were two Broadway

shows, lunch at Sardi’s, a tour of Times Square

Theatre District, and VIP seating at "Broadway

on Broadway," an outdoor Broadway concert

in Times Square, that heralds the beginning of

the Broadway season. The trip was a roaring

success! But don’t take our word for it —

here’s what one tour participant had to say:

“I had always wanted to go to NYC and this

was the perfect ‘inaugural’ experience.

Everything was taken care of for me, theatre

seats were excellent, all my questions

answered. It could not have been better!”

Plans are underway for Starlight’s third

annual New York tripover the weekend of

September 8, 2006. For more information,

please contact Kathryn Rieke at 816-997-1128,

or email [email protected].

We bring Broadway toKansas City every summer...

Next fall we’ll take you toBroadway!
