Booking Office News

Just as the hall activities in the summer, so does the work in the BoOking Office, and the opportunity is taken to update diary pages and internal office systems. We look forward to September when the buzz of activities brings the premises alive again - there are 750 entries in the diary between September and the end of December.

There have been some recent changes which may be of interest. Regrettably, the fortnightly Wednesday Lace Class has having arrived here from Ellsbridge House in 1988. It is sad to see a group with such skills being unable to continue due to declining but the monthly Lace Class on

still runs. We have also lost the Monday morning Tumble Tots children's activity, also closed due to lack of numbers. Apart from a loss of income, it is a pity we no longer see

the children and their par~nts and carers coming to our Hall.

But, as so often happens, other activities are starting up. Andy Carfield's Tuesday Sportsvan, having closed in May due to lack of support, resumes in September, running on Thursday afternoons where there are fewer interruptions through the year We are also hosting a Saturday moming Irish Dancing Class and this we hope will grow as it becomes more widely known.

There is plenty to be upbeat about at Saltford Hall - it would be good to see all of our hirers fully supported .

Please note that we hope to give the notice board in the main foyer a lick of paint during the summer and this will necessitate the removal of all of the posters. Would those who have ongoing displays please let us have new ones from the beginning of September? There is a benefit to be gained here as notices that have been in place for a long time cease to attract attention. We would also remind everyone that the notice board is not for advertising services or goods but, in order of priority, activities at the Hall, then events by our affiliated groups elsewhere. and if there is room, other cultural and interest events in the area.

All enquiries for booking Saltford Hall should be made on 01225 874081. Please continue to make your bookings and enquiries by telephone. If you need to speak to David or Helen personally, the office is

generally open in the momings and occasionally at other times during the day. Please ring before visiting to make sure your visit will not be in vain .

"A letter from the General"

This is Saltford Drama Club's choice for its November production. The play, by Maurice McLaughlin, is set in the far-east just after the last war and tells the moving story of a small group of nuns in peril of their lives from the invading army. The protection of their elderly priest is of paramount importance and they will go to whatever lengths necessary to secure his escape. staged by the drama club in 1971 this play has lost none of its resonance with the struggles faced by many in similar eastern countries today.

The pla~ will be at Salford Hall from 17 to 1 November.

Saltford Evening W.I. June has been a very successful month for SEW!. Firstly Alice Frere won, not only her class in the Bank Holiday Flower Show in Bath, but best overall entrant in the Show for a delicate decorated bead bookmark. An honour indeed.

At our June meeting, 'Touchstones', a theatrical trio of two ladies and one man entertained. One lady was in Elizabethan costume of wine velvet with gold inserts and a necklace that was a copy of one of Queen Elizabeth's necklaces. The man also wore wine velvet. The second lady came in a shift so she could show her undergarments and the various layers that made up an elegant lady's dress.

all danced and members were invited to form a circle and try a few

A very hilarious few minutes followed!

A successful was held at the home of Hilary Hallet. It was well organised with excellent food. The June walk through woodland near Marshfield was enjoyable and the Annual lunch at Gameley lodge was well attended and enjoyed.

Our link delegate also attended our meeting and gave us an excellent report of her attendance at the AGM at the Albert Hall,

At the time of going to press we are looking forward to a presentation called 'Across Canada by Greyhound

Magistrates. Formerly called Justices -of the Peace they are appointed by 'the Secretary of State of Constitutional Affairs and the Lord Chancellor. Although no formal law training is necessary they do undergo training to help them understand their duties. They have the power of sentencing wrong doers and imposing fines in adult and juvenile courts and they also conduct family courts. In some cases they will pass cases on to Crown Courts. They are also responsible for granting licenses and the registration of gaming premises.

On a bright sunny June morning the Guild welcomed Mr. Richard Lytton of lTV West to talk on Journalist -Friend or Foe? He started by saying that journalists come low on popularity lists, not, on the whole, a deserved position. Their mission is to present news in a truthful and impartial manner. Newspaper reporting can be biased due to the political or popular bias of the proprietors of the paper. Television reporting is impartial and has a more human, and in some circumstances, compaSSionate way of presenting news.

He related how sometimes it was a lengthy process getting facts about breaking news. He happily answered questions from the floor and related some of his embarrassing albeit amusing moments during his career as a television presenter. After his talk maybe his audience will see journalists in a more favourable light.

Keynsham Orchestra

Following the success of its Prom Gala concert at last year's Music Festival in Keynsham, the orchestra was proud to present another at this year's festival in the Memorial Park on the evening of 9 July. The first half consisted entirely of Russian music with one exception: combined arrangements of tunes by the Beat/es and Tchaikovsky entitled 'The Beatlecracker Suite'. With the second half devoted to the British, included was an overture by Hamish McCunn and a march from a suite by Trevor Duncan which both became familiar to most when used by the BBC as signature tunes for 'Sutherland's Law' and 'Dr Finlay's Casebook'.

Lisa McMaster once again was accompanied by the orchestra in songs from Tchaikovsky's 'Eugene Onegin' and Gilbert and Sullivan'S 'Mikado'. Concluding with the Prom's traditional pieces, the audience joined in with a keen performance of 'Land of Hope and Glory' along with a rousing encore to then be led by Lisa in a grand finale of 'Jerusalem'.

Wrth perfect weather conditions for the occasion, this was another very satisfying event.
