HEAD COACH CAROL WEYMULLER

ASSISTANT COACH RICH LENHART

Carol Weymuller enters her 10th season as the head coach of theHobart tennis program. In 2003-04 the Statesmen postedprogram-best 17-3 mark and captured the Liberty LeagueChampionship. The U.S. Professional Tennis Associationhonored Weymuller in 2002 with its Tex Schwab LifetimeAchievement Award.

Weymuller earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish andelementary education from Bethany College in 1970. Upon

graduation, she worked as a tennis and squash professional at the Heights Casino inBrooklyn, N.Y., from 1970 through 1980, followed by a stint at the Genesee Valley Clubin Rochester, N.Y., from 1980 through 1993. From 1993 through 1995, she was thesquash professional at the University of Rochester Medical Center Athletic Club andthe tennis professional at the Country Club of Rochester.

As a tennis player, Weymuller was a four-year member of the men’s varsity team atBethany. She helped the Bison win conference championships in 1967 and 1968 andappeared in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.” As a junior player, she wasnationally ranked as high as fifth and won the Orange Bowl championship three times.In 1968, she was on the Junior Wightman Cup Team and played in the first U.S. Openat Forest Hills. The following year, she was co-ranked as the No. 1 woman in NewEngland. In 1973, Weymuller won the USPTA National Singles Championship.

Since the 1998-99 season, Rich Lenhart has served the Hobarttennis program as an assistant coach.

Lenhart holds a bachelor’s degree from the State University ofNew York at Oswego and a master’s degree from Shenandoah(Va.) University. Since 1986, he’s taught mathematics andcomputers at St. Michael School in Newark, N.Y. In addition,he’s currently head of the tennis programs for the GenevaRecreation Department.

A former Newark High School Section V Class B doubleschampion, Lenhart co-captained the 1984 Oswego State men’s tennis team. He’s activein local doubles tournament competition, and is a resident of Newark, N.Y.

One year removed from one of its bestseasons ever, the Hobart tennis teamenters the 2004-05 season with highexpectations and a confidence that itcan surpass that success.

Under the guidance of Head CoachCarol Weymuller, the Statesmenreached new heights in 2004, capturingthe Liberty League tennis title for thefirst time in eight years and recording aprogram-record 17 wins.

Returning four of its top six players,including the 2004 Liberty League Co-Player of the Year in Peter Piné, Hobarthas the necessary tools to win its secondstraight league crown.

Hobart’s top player the past fourseasons, Piné will start the year ranked17th in the Northeast Region afterposting a 20-6 record last year.

Junior Adam Raffa and sophomoreMatt Silver will man the second and thirdspots after compiling 15-1 and 17-5records, respectively, and earning spots onthe All-Liberty League Singles team.

The remaining three spots are lesscertain for Hobart. First-years CharlieDavis and Nick Raho will battle betweenthe fourth and fifth positions, whilesophomore Matt Jacobus could round outthe top six.

Sophomore Mike Klein and juniorDerrick Moore also have the potential tostep up into the starting six.

Although not returning any of itsdoubles pairs, the Statesmen have a solidcorps of players with good experience.

Piné and Raffa will team up at No. 1,while Silver and Raho look to be the bestcombination for the second position. Pinéand Raffa could be one of the top duos inthe league and will start the year ranked13th in the region.

The third doubles spot has a fewpotential winning combinations for theStatesmen. Davis and Jacobus could joinforces, while Moore and Klein also will bein the mix to earn match experience.

PETER PINÉSR, Princeton, N.J., PrincetonHobart’s top player the past three seasons, Piné wasnamed the Liberty League Player of the Year in 2004.Posting a 20-6 record in singles and a 19-8 mark indoubles last season, he needs just 18 wins to surpass theHobart career wins record. He is 58-18 for his career.

GARETT ROSATISR, Camillus, N.Y., West GeneseeJoining the Statesmen for his senior year, Rosati will spendthe early parts of the season adapting to the power and paceof the college game.

MATTHEW JACOBUSJR, South Burlington, Vt., South BurlingtonFinishing the last nine matches in 2003-04 with a 6-3 record,Jacobus looks to build on that success this year. Splitting histime between fifth and sixth singles, he will compete for theNo. 4 spot and also will be in the hunt to play third doubles.

ADAM RAFFAJR, Concord, Mass., Concord-CarlislePosting a 15-1 record at No. 3 and earning All-Liberty Leaguerecognition, Raffa was a major part of the Statesmen’s successin 2003-04. A talented shot maker, he will move up to theNo. 2 singles spot and first doubles for the Statesmen thisseason.

DERRICK MOORESR, Deerfield, N.Y., WhitesboroThe consummate team player, Moore will anchor the bottomhalf of the Statesmen’s singles lineup this season. A dedicatedworker on the court, he has improved his game over the pastthree seasons and will be looked to to pull out tough matches.

JED STUARTJR, Queensbury, N.Y., Gunnery SchoolStuart could see more court time after showing improvementthroughout his sophomore season and during the off-season.

MIKE KLEINSO, Chappaqua, N.Y., Horace GreeleyKlein posted a 4-4 record in his rookie season, including a 4-2 mark in dual matches. Possessing the potential to earn aconsistent starting role in 2004-05, he will vie for a spot atsixth singles or third doubles.

BRISTOL FIELD HOUSEThe Robert A. Bristol ’31 Field House(right) has space for five tennis courts,providing the Statesmen with a year-round training site. An exceptionalmultipurpose facility, the Bristol FieldHouse also accommodates intramuralbasketball, track meets, and full-fieldtraining space for the Colleges’ outdoorsports.

RFK VARSITY STRENGTHTRAINING CENTERThe Raleigh-Foley-Kraus, or RFK,Varsity Strength Training Center (left)provides the Colleges’ varsity student-athletes with a state-of-the-art weightroom, and also enhances the sportsmedicine staff’s rehabilitation capacity.

PRESIDENTMARK D.GEARANMark D. Gearan isa college presidentwhose lifeexemplifies thestrongest attributesof Hobart and

William Smith Colleges: civic engage-ment, global awareness, a focus on the21st century and a commitment tostudents.

When named president in 1999, Presi-dent Gearan was serving as director of thePeace Corps in Washington, D.C., a posthe assumed in 1995. Prior to his Peace Corpsdirectorship, he served at the White Houseas Assistant to the President, Director ofCommunications, and Deputy Chief of Staff.

A native of Gardner, Mass., PresidentGearan earned a bachelor’s degree in gov-ernment cum laude at Harvard Universityand a law degree from Georgetown Univer-sity. He is also the recipient of several hon-orary degrees. President Gearan was con-firmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on theboard of the Corporation for National andCommunity Service, and was appointed tothe national board of The Partnership ofPublic Service. He also serves on the boardof the National Campus Compact and co-chairs the New York Campus Compact Ex-ecutive Committee.

DEAN OFHOBARTCLARENCE E.BUTLERClarence E. Butlerbecame dean ofHobart College inJuly 1998. Butlercame to Hobart in

1979, after serving on the faculties atBrown University and Dartmouth College.He first was named assistant dean, thensenior associate dean in 1983, after servingfor two years as acting dean of the College.

Butler has served on many committees,including the Committee on Standards, In-dividual Major Committee, and President’sAdvisory Council. Aside from his adminis-trative duties, Butler has taught German parttime and, as an Episcopal priest, has at timesserved the local community in that capac-ity as well.

Butler received bachelor’s and doctoraldegrees from Washington University in St.Louis, a master’s from the University of Kan-sas, and a bachelor of divinity degree fromthe Episcopal Theological School. He alsoreceived a language diploma from the Uni-versity of Stockholm in Sweden. He is aformer Fulbright Scholar and DAAD (Ger-man Academic Exchange Service) Scholar.

HOBART DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS MIKE HANNA ’68A 1968 graduate of Hobart, Mike Hanna became the College’sathletics director in 1981. He has piloted the athletics programthrough unprecedented championships in lacrosse to today’sdepartment-wide success. His vision, along with that of hisWilliam Smith counterpart, led to the construction of the RobertA. Bristol ’31 Field House in 1989 and the Dr. Frank P. Smith ’36Squash Center in 1998. Improvements in the new millenniumunder his tenure include the Bozzuto Boathouse, McCooey Field,Cozzens Field, the RFK Strength Training Center, the Topichak

Team Rooms in the Elliott Varsity House, the Tom Poole Team Room for Hobart Soccer,and the Bob Ford Team Room for basketball.

As a quarterback, Hanna broke all of Hobart’s season and career passing records duringthe 1966 and 1967 seasons. A second-team All-American lacrosse attackman in 1968,Hanna finished second for the Statesmen in scoring that year with 35 goals and 35 assists.He co-captained both the football and lacrosse teams his senior year.

Hobart and William Smith Collegesare private, coordinate, liberal-artscolleges in Geneva, N.Y. Hobart Collegewas founded in 1822, William SmithCollege in 1908. Hobart enrolls 835 menand William Smith 1,005 women. Thefull-time equivalent teaching facultynumbers 174 members, 98 percent ofwhom hold doctoral degrees.

The two colleges have the samefaculty; men and women students attendclasses together and use the same libraryand laboratories. Each college, however,awards its own degrees, has its own deanand admissions office, and maintains itsown student government and athleticsprograms.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMSAt the Colleges, the academic year is

divided into two 15-week semesters.Students take four courses each term,eight per year, for either a bachelor of artsor bachelor of science degree. Theacademic program traditionally comprisesfour years.

Majors are available in Americanstudies, anthropology, art, biology,biochemistry, chemistry, classics, compara-tive literature, computer science, econom-ics, English, geoscience, Greek, history,Latin, mathematics, modern languages(French and Spanish), music, philosophy,physics, political science, psychology,religious studies and sociology.

Individual majors may be developed inAsian studies, Africana/Latino studies,urban studies and women’s studies, amongothers. In addition, the Colleges offer amaster’s degree in teaching.

HOBART BLOCK H AWARDS

The Myron V. Jacobs ’37 AwardAwarded annually to that member of the Hobart College tennis team who hasdemonstrated excellence as a tennis player and as a citizen of the Collegecommunity. The award is named for Myron V. Jacobs ’37 in recognition of hisloyalty to Hobart College and his love for tennis, and is endowed through thegenerous loyalty of his nephew, Perry M. Jacobstein ’61.
