A kind of figurative language that cannot be understood

by its literal meaning. (Ex: “It’s raining cats and dogs”)

What is an idiom?

A comparison of two things that does not use like or as;

often uses a form of the verb be.

What is a metaphor?

A technique which gives nonhuman things human qualities.

What is personification?

A comparison of two things that uses the words like or as.

What is a simile?

The feeling a reader gets from the story.

What is mood?

Repetition of the first consonant sound in a word series.

What is alliteration?

A word whose sound makes you think of its meaning.

(i.e., buzz, swish)

What is onomatopoeia?

Repeating the first consonant sound in a word series.

The reason an author is writing.

A broad statement that does not take details into account.

A guess about what is happening in a story or article.
