YVR’s Global Reach: Extending Our Expertise
By now many of you know that 2005 was a recordyear for the Airport Authority, and 2006 is shap-ing up to be even busier. This year is also prov-
ing to be a milestone year for our subsidiary,Vancouver Airport Services (YVRAS).
YVRAS is a leading airport manager and developer,with contracts at 18 airports in seven countries,including The Bahamas, Canada, Chile, Cyprus,Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the Turks andCaicos Islands. The company markets the operatingexperience and leading-edge systems developed atYVR to the world, and has accomplished several keyachievements already this year.
In January, YVRAS was awarded the contract tomanage and develop Nassau International Airport inThe Bahamas. Nassau International is the fourthbusiest airport in the Caribbean, and handles approxi-mately 3.2-million passengers annually. As part of itscontract, YVRAS will manage a US $225-million con-struction program at the airport.
YVRAS also recently added the Larnaka and PafosInternational Airports in Cyprus to its portfolio.Vancouver Airport Services, as a member of HermesAirports Limited, assumed operation of the airportsafter finalizing 600-million Euro in financing. YVRASwill use the money to do substantial upgrading of theairports over the next four years. Together, Larnakaand Pafos International Airports processed 6.8-millionpassengers in 2005. The management contract forthese airports marks YVRAS’ first foray in theEuropean Union, a major milestone for the company.
YVRAS has also seen some changes to its manage-ment team and structure. On March 31, long-timepresident and CEO Frank O’Neill stepped down fromhis role, marking the end of an era for the company,and ushering in new president and CEO George Casey.George had previously held senior industry positions,including president, with Airport Group International, aprivate-sector airport management and developmentgroup based in California. We are very pleased to havehim as part of the YVRAS team.
Shortly after George’s appointment, Coleen Rogers,a YVRAS employee since 2004, was promoted to vicepresident, operations for the company. Coleen bringsmore than 30 years of experience to the role, whichwill be invaluable as she oversees operations at 18 air-ports around the world.
Finally, in March, the Airport Authority was able toincrease ownership of YVRAS to 100 per cent from57.3 per cent by acquiring the company’s remainingcommon and preferred shares from CDC AirportInvestments, a subsidiary of CDC Group PLC, a U.K.public company.
Considering the major players in the global airportmanagement business, we should all be proud thatYVRAS, a subsidiary of Vancouver InternationalAirport Authority, has grown to become a leadingglobal airport management and development compa-ny. It’s a testament to everyone on the YVRAS team,and to the leading-edge management practices devel-oped at YVR and now utilized around the world.

Ever lost something while travel-ling? If so, you are not alone. Eachyear, thousands of items are turned
in to YVR’s Lost and Found.For the past year, Dawn Coates
has been busy as a Lost and Foundcoordinator at the InternationalTerminal’s Customer Service Counteron Departures Level 3.
As a Lost and Found coordinator,Dawn’s goal is to reunite passengerswith their lost items. The job entailsanswering enquiries, maintaining acomputerized database, and even dab-bling in some detective work. Forexample, if someone turns in a cellphone, Dawn and the team atMarquise may call a number in thephone’s directory to locate the owner,or search the Internet for international
phone numbers and addresses.Due to the hard work of Dawn and
the Marquise team, about a third of allitems are returned to their owners. Inaddition to the usual assortment ofpassports, clothing and glasses, thestoreroom collection currently con-tains a few odd items, including acase full of tattoo needles and ink.The variety of items, and the ever-changing nature of the job, keepsthings interesting. As Dawn said,“every day and everyone is different.”
Dawn says she enjoys meeting andtalking to people from all walks oflife and all nationalities, althoughdealing with worried passengers cansometimes be a challenge.“Passengers can become very dis-traught over lost items. Finding some-
thing that was lost can be a joyousexperience; however, tact must beused when an item is not retrieved.”
After three months, unclaimeditems are donated to a recognizedlocal charity. Since June 2004, theAirport Chaplaincy has been distrib-uting unclaimed items to a variety ofcharities and organizations. Eyewearis donated to an aid organization thatprovides vision services to develop-ing countries, while unclaimed elec-tronic items may be auctioned off inYVR’s annual United Way fundraiser.
We all know how stressful it can beto lose our things and what a relief it isto find them—especially when travel-ling. A woman recently wrote Dawn anote to express her thanks for helpingreconnect her with her purse. “I feellike I have been given the purse all overagain,” she wrote. “There are crowdsof good people in this world who findthings and who then take the trouble tohand in what they pick up. And thus,grateful people get their stuff back.That’s me, a grateful person.”

Last month, Canada Border ServicesAgency (CBSA) seized 50 kilos ofcocaine from two suitcases that
arrived at Vancouver InternationalAirport (YVR) on a flight fromMexico.
CBSA officers were conductingairside baggage examinations whenthey became suspicious of two suit-cases and discovered 45 bricks ofcocaine weighing approximately 50kilos. The drugs were then turnedover to the RCMP’s Drug Section forfurther investigation.
“This seizure demonstrates theexcellent work our officers do on adaily basis,” said Chris Argue, chief ofAirside and Special EnforcementOperations. “Stopping smuggling ofillegal drugs at our borders plays a bigpart in making our communities safer.”
At YVR, CBSA takes on variousroles, including searching internation-al aircraft, conducting airside bag-gage exams, and monitoring cargomovements from aircraft to ware-houses. The CBSA also has specialenforcement teams outside the CBSA
passenger terminal to examine andmonitor baggage and cargo beingoffloaded from arriving internationalaircraft.
Last year, CBSA officers in thePacific Region made more than 2,200drug seizures.

Though 2027 may seem like a longway away, growth in air trafficmakes planning critical. The
Airport Authority’s vision is toremain a premier global gateway,connecting the Asia-Pacific regionand the Americas.
Earlier this month, the AirportAuthority released its draft 20-YearMaster Plan entitled YVR: YourAirport 2027. The document is amedium-term roadmap that outlinesrecommendations for future airportdevelopment to accommodate pas-senger growth, increasing aircraftand cargo traffic, and the needs ofYVR’s stakeholders and the travel-ling public while supporting the air-port’s longer-term viability. Thereport also provides a proposed2027 Airport Land Use Plan that
indicates how the limited landresource will be allocated for airportrelated uses.
Throughout the summer, theAirport Authority will be consultingon this draft plan with its industry andbusiness partners as well as all thoseinterested in the airport to gain com-ments and feedback. The purpose is tocapture as many views as possible.

Vancouver Airport Services(YVRAS) has assumed operationsof two airports in Cyprus, the first
two European Union airports in thecompany’s growing roster.
YVRAS, as a member of HermesAirports Limited, assumed operationsof the Larnaka and Pafos airportsafter finalizing an $854-million (600-million Euro) deal with a Europeanlending syndicate. The proceeds willbe used to upgrade the airports overthe next four years.
All passenger flights to Cyprusmay only enter the Republic ateither Pafos or LarnakaInternational Airport and togetherthese airports welcomed nearly
seven-million passengers in 2006.“Managing airports in the
