About Willamette University

Page 2 Willamette

Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritagedating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do.

We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our studentsas friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Notunto ourselves alone are we born.”

Why Willamette?• Quality Academics• Student-Athletes are more than 1/4 of the student body• Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference• Student-Faculty Ratio of 11:1• Students from 34 States• Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol• NearthePacificCoastandthe Cascade Mountains

This motto is put into action locally andthroughout the world. At Willamette, youcan study abroad, as many of our studentsdo each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while workingto improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the sameacademic expectations as the nation’s mostacclaimed colleges and universities, we hopewe’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should bothchallenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students tobenefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program withvaried extracurricular activities. The faculty

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over425 members and is the largestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with anathletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho,Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, employees care aboutthe well-being of their student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference The nine prviate collegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plusWhitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 includedWillamette, College of Idaho (Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (UPS). Albany College wasadded in 1931 and remained for seven

years, then departed and returned in 1949 as Lewisand Clark College. The next member, Pacific Lutheran, joined in 1965, followedby Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrewin 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in1988. Menlo College joined

the NWC in 2006 in football only. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Willamette Season Outlook

Page 20

After Willamette lost three starters and three key reserves from last season’s squadthat qualified for the Northwest Conference Tournament, the 2006-07 edition of Bearcat Hoop will be counting on new faces to keep up the team’s winning tradition. Head Coach Gordie James will look for returning players to take the lead as he enters his 20th year atWillamette University. The biggest shoes to fill are those of John Olinger, who was commonly referred to as “Johnny O” by teammates and fans. Olinger, who earned First Team All-NWC honors last year after averaging 18.0 points per game, played wing for the Bearcats andwas the heart and soul of last year’s team.

Despite the loss of Olinger, the Bearcats return fellow First Team All-NWC selectionC.J. Stuvland (Sr.) at point guard. Olinger and Stuvland were the first pair of Bearcat teammates to be selected First Team All-NWC during the same season since Ryan Hepp and Marques Johnson were chosen for the First Team in 2002-03. Stuvland, who averaged 14.9 points pergame a year ago, and junior point guard Josh Erickson, will be at the helm of the Bearcats’ motion-oriented offense. Senior wing Rob Andrus also is expected to start or see significant time off the bench as a backcourt player. According to James, Andrus is a player who can step into thegame and score at anytime. Even though Erickson and Stuvland are both listed as point guards, they will be on

the floor at the same time for much of the season. Both can score and run the offense. “Josh is the ultimate floor leader,” Jamessaid. “He has great floor vision and can get the ball to the right guy at the right time.He just has an excellent feel for the game. “C.J. can really push the ball in the open court. He has the ability to knock it downfrom the perimeter and he can score at thehoop,” James noted. Among the key backups at the point guard and wing positions are senior Mike Plank (Pt. Guard/Wing) and junior Michael Smith (Wing). Other WU backcourt playersare sophomores Corey Costantino (Wing), Simon Currie (Wing/Post) and Nick Babij (Wing), along with freshmen Grant Leslie(Pt. Guard) and Dan Nugent (Wing/Post). Plank will be the primary backup at point guard, as he rejoins the team after sitting out last season. Plank’s time withthe team will end at the start of the secondsemester, since he will graduate from WUin December. According to James, Smith is the team’s most improved player on both ends of the floor. With his abilities to knock down the

Willamette has won 17 or moregames during four of the past fiveseasons. The Bearcats were 17-8in 2005-06.

3-pointer and defend, Smith will be a majorcontributor this season. Costantino and Currie can expect tosee their minutes increase in their second season with the program. Costantino isa versatile player who can play all three perimeter positions, while Currie is one ofthe team’s top 3-point shooters. Nugent is only newcomer to be addedto the Bearcats’ roster this year. He is a multi-dimensional scorer who has an array of moves to the basket and an excellentability to finish. Junior Ian Mansfield and sophomore Kyler McClary will most likely be WU’sstarters at the post positions. Mansfield started 20 games a year ago and averaged 5.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Healso led the team in blocked shots with 22. “With his strength and explosiveness, heis a premier defensive rebounder,” Jamessaid about Mansfield. “He has worked hardto expand his offensive arsenal.”

Bearcats

McClary played in just 11 games duringthe 2005-06 season, but has worked hard to earn a starting position. He combines wellwith Mansfield for exceptional post play. “He is an excellent frontline defender who can guard the block as well as stepout and guard the perimeter,” James saidregarding McClary. “Kyler can score in thepaint and has accuracy from 3-point range.” Sophomore Tain Cantrell (Post) will bethe primary backup in the frontcourt. Hislong arms and skillful timing make him anexcellent offensive rebounder as well asa strong defender in the lane. Currie andNugent also may help at post this season. James’ past teams have been known fortheir tough defensive style of play, and hesays this year’s team will need that sameattitude to be successful in the extremelycompetitive Northwest Conference. “We lost key defenders to graduation,”James said. “So this year’s team will needto develop their individual containment skills and combine them with an aggressive help concept in order to control the high-powered offenses of the NWC. “Our players also need to become more persistent and relentless on the defensive boards,” James added. “This year’s players possess excellent floor speed, so their defensive efforts need to create some stops, which will allow us to get into the opencourt game.” Despite the loss of Olinger and other key players, the Bearcats enter the year fullof optimism with the return of Erickson, Stuvland, and Mansfield, plus quality depthat all five positions. In James’ twentieth season at Willamette, the key to another successful year could be how quickly theplayers grow into their new roles.

During 2005-06, C.J. Stuvland averaged 14.9points and was named First Team All-NWC.
