ABOUT OLIVET COLLEGE

Page 3: 2006 Olivet College Men’s Golf

After winning the 2002 Michigan Intercollegiate AthleticAssociation championship, the Olivet College men’s golf team hasfinished in third-place the last three seasons. With the conferencechampion receiving an automatic berth to the 2007 NCAA DivisionIII Championships, the Comets hope to climb back to the top spot inthe standings.

The Comets welcome back a solid nucleus of players as well asthree newcomers who are expected to compete for a spot in the topfive.

Leading the way for the Comets in 2006 is junior Joe Kiss (EastLeroy/Harper Creek). Last year, he played in six MIAA jamboreeswith a 75.7 stroke average. Overall in eight rounds during the fallseason, Kiss had a 75.9 stroke average, which was second on theteam. In the spring, he played nine rounds, averaging a team-low 76.9strokes.

“Joe has a lot of the attributes that a good golfer should have,”said Head Coach Gary Morrison. “He plays exceptionally well underpressure. When Joe has a bad round, he usually comes back the nextday and shoots lights out.”

Also returning is sophomore Eric Ross (Burlington, Ontario/International). Last fall, he played in six MIAA outings with a 78.5stroke average. Overall in the fall, Ross had a 77.6 average.

SEASON PREVIEW

“In terms of talent, Eric is probably the best golfer on the team,”Morrison said. “One thing that he has worked hard on is his angermanagement. Eric needs to take Joe’s approach and play one hole at atime.”

Other returning letterwinners who are most likely to break intothe starting five are junior Justin Gusczinski (Horton/Hanover-Horton)and sophomores Brock Gleadall (Stratford, Ontario/St. MichaelsCatholic) and Justin Lesansky (LaSalle, Ontario/International). Eachgolfer had an opportunity to play in at least one MIAA jamboree lastfall.

“This trio of golfers has a lot of potential,” says Morrison. “Theyare very capable of playing a solid round of golf each time they stepon the course.”

The three newcomers are Luke Godin (Barrie, Ontario/InnisdaleSecondary), Adam Skiff (Allen Park) and Branden Stewart (Barrie,Ontario/Innisdale Secondary). Godin’s older brother, Jason, graduatedfrom Olivet in 2000.

“All three of our recruits have had solid high school careers beforecoming to Olivet,” Morrison said. “The question is whether they canbring it up to the college level where you play from the white tees andthe course is 400 yards longer.”

2006 OLIVET COLLEGE MEN’S GOLF SCHEDULE

Education for Individual and Social Responsibilitywww.olivetcollege.edu/sports

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic AssociationThe Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)

is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference. The 2006-07 school year marks the 119th consecutive year

of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From thevery beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have beenchanges in some of the sports (bicycle racing andIndian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into oneof America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary’s.Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belongedto any other formal league. Albion and Olivet were chartermembers although Albion is the only member to hold continuousmembership. Ex-members are Michigan State University

(1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), HillsdaleCollege (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1954until 1997 when Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College

of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the Stateof Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. Theinaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908),Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926),Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888), and SaintMary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.

Tri-State University became a conference member in 2004-05upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.
