Leading the way with comprehensive programs that empower people and families living with MS to transform and improve their quality of life.

Message from the President

Dear Friends,

In 2006, one of our goals was to reduce our organizational expenses so more of your dollars support e Heuga Center’s programs and services. 81% of all funds raised in 2006 were spent on programs and services for people and families living with MS.

Our Board of Directors adopted the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability, which dictates the program–services expenses should be at

least 65%. Our 81% far exceeds these standards.

Another goal was to update our strategic plan. In August 2006, e Heuga Center board and staff met to discuss e Heuga Center’s strategic plan. e strategic plan provides important direction to e Heuga Center in all areas of the organization. Some highlights of our plan include an emphasis on outcomes measurements of programs and services to determine their effects on people living with MS. In addition, we set out to strengthen our governance structure and establish e Heuga Center as a top-rated nonprofit charity.

Several Heuga Center supporters initiated fundraisers in 2006 including 24 Hours of Sunlight, CT Jamboree, e Dusty Boot’s Dine Out for MS, Colorado Footwear’s Shoe Sale with Soul, Bend Golf Blast, and Star Power Systems Golf Tournament. ese events provided diversity to our established events: Vertical Express for MS, e Heuga Center Golf Tournament, Alpen Wine Fest and the Annual Autumn Benefit. ese events, along with our annual giving programs, grant and corporate donation programs, have allowed us to continue diversifying our funding and provide more programs and services for people living with MS.

We continue to provide an array of programs and services designed to address the health and wellness needs of people living with MS. Our CAN DO, CAN DO 2, and JUMPSTART programs continue to attract people from across the United States and Canada. e best part is that we are able to provide scholarships for programs fees to more than 90% of the programs participants, making our programs more accessible for people to attend. We have also added more educational content to our Web site, www.heuga.org, to make it a health and wellness resource for people living with MS.

All of this is possible due to the support we receive from our board of directors, staff, volunteers, donors and programs participants. anks to all you do in supporting people with MS.

With admiration and respect,

Brian Hutchinson, PT, MSCSPresident and CEO

“My world seemed to have been shrinking. But e Heuga Center exposed me to new ideas and possibilities and some very good, important people. Now the world is growing again.” —program participant Steve Olszyk

CAN DO—e Heuga Center’s five-day CAN DO programs are intensive health and education programs that teach people with MS and their families how to take charge of their lives within the context of their disease. Programs focus on overall management of the whole person with MS, empha-sizing health, physical fitness, nutrition, psychological well-being, and social interaction. e culmination of the health program for each participant is a personalized lifestyle strategy that includes comprehensive recommendations and ways to seek out and acquire needed resources based on their specific goals. e staff-to-participant ratio guarantees that each person receives personal attention. Participants are able to speak with healthcare professionals in an intimate, relaxed environment that is rare in healthcare today.

In addition to the focus on the MS participant, there is a separate track for support partners. Spouses, family members, or friends are encouraged to attend the CAN DO program with the MS participant. Special sessions are devoted to this group of support partners, addressing the unique needs, concerns, and challenges brought into their lives by a loved one with MS.

“e CAN DO program was a life changing event for me and now I actually understand that I can truly live my life with MS to the greatest capacity.” —program participant Dawn Ward

CAN DO 2—Because the symptoms of MS fluctuate over time, the two-day CAN DO 2 program gives the CAN DO program's past participants a way to update and modify their personal program. is educational/wellness program re-evaluates participants physical abilities, updates their current exercise and lifestyle program, and provides renewed moti-vation for maintaining health. Each CAN DO 2 program is limited to 15 participants and their support partners.

“I find my strength through my faith, my family, and knowledge I’ve learned over the past few years, including knowledge learned from my experience at both the CAN DO and CAN DO 2 programs.”

—program participant Debbie Moore

JUMPSTART—e Heuga Center created JUMPSTART in 2000 because of the high demand for the CAN DO programs and as a cost-effective alternative for people to learn more about health promotion and wellness as they relate to MS. JUMPSTART, a one-day program, consists of educational presentations and workshops that emphasize health and wellness. Topics include disease and symptom management, exercise, nutrition, and stress management.

“CAN DO helped me reach inside myself and find the courage to move on and live a full, happy, successful life.” —program participant Robin Morton

JUMPSTART for kids—JUMPSTART held its first program for kids whose parents have MS in 2006. e interactive workshop focuses on education and positive strategies for living well. rough a series of activities, children experience what many symptoms of MS feel like, both physically and emotionally. ey are taught creative strategies for living positively with the disease. Children are separated into groups so that the information is provided at age-appropriate levels. Enrollment is limited to 25 families, including the children in each family. e JUMPSTART for kids is a free program and optional activities for parents are provided for a minimal fee.

e Heuga Center takes pride in becoming a top-rated charity and has established this goal as one of our strategic plan objectives. We believe that adherence to core values established by industry rating systems and ethical behavior provides assurance to donors that we can be entrusted to carry out the mission intended by donated funds.

A major goal of e Heuga Center, as defined in our long-range strategic plan, is to diversify the Center's funding sources to improve our organizational stability. By maintaining several revenue streams, our organization will be much stronger in the face of economic changes. In 2006, we continued to diversify our sources of revenue so we are less reliant on special event income.

We were equally successful in improving our expense ratios. We were able to devote even more funds to our programs and public education services, from 62% in 2005 to 81% in 2006. e 81% exceeds standards set by the Better Business Bureau for program expenses (they require at least 65%), and receives full credit by Charity Navigator for management and general ratio (which is less than 15%) and fundraising ratio (which is less than 10%). Our fundraising efficiency also exceeds Charity Navigator’s standard of $.10 ~ our cost to raise $1 is only $.06.

e purpose of e Jimmie Heuga Center Endowment is to support e Heuga Center’s programs and research activi-ties now and in perpetuity. e Endowment is a 501(c)(3) organization independent from e Heuga Center. e Endowment was created in 1997 to ensure the longevity and financial stability of e Heuga Center. e Endowment was the inspiration of Waldon (Brock) and Evalyn Byers, long-time supporters of e Heuga Center. e Endowment continues to grow under the leadership of the Endowment Board of Directors.

e Heuga Center’s Endowment continues to grow. Once it reaches $1,000,000, we will use a portion of the interest earned to support our mission to provide health and wellness programs to people facing the challenges of living with multiple sclerosis. As of December 31, 2006, our Endowment held $575,973, an 8% increase in 1 year.
