MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is America’s oldest collegiateathletic conference.

The 2007-08 school year marks the 121st consecutive year of operation for theNCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From thevery beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-season championships in multiple sports. There have been changes in some of the sports (bicycle racing and Indian club jugglinghave long since disappeared, and basketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into one of America’s finest NCAA Division IIIconferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schools that have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet andSaint Mary’s. Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belonged to any otherformal league. Albion and Olivet were charter members although Albion is the only memberto hold continuous membership. Ex-members are Michigan State University (1888-1907),Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), and DefianceCollege (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960 until 1997 when the DefianceCollege of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College of Indiana were invited to join. It also markedthe first time that the league added members outside the state of Michigan. The leaguestipulated, however, that the name of the conference would not change. The inauguralyear of current members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953),Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888) and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the league accepted WisconsinLutheran College of Milwaukee as an associate member for the purpose of competing infootball. Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave the MIAA after the 2007season to join another conference.

Tri-State University of Angola, Ind., became a conference member in 2004-05 uponits acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events CenterThe 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the

existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used by thecollege and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’sbasketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practicesand competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programswill use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer withMicrosoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988,he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development ofthree major releases of the product.
