2007 ANNUAL REPORT
Imagine the possibilities…To the regular readers of the Annual Report, our 2007 edition may look a little different. The images we
are using this year are the product of a very unique experiment on the part of our art instructors and
students at the Malta branch of the Carriage House Arts Center. Students were introduced to the
basics of portrait photography as they addressed technical issues such as composition and lighting. As
they took turns in front of and behind the camera, students were encouraged to imagine themselves on a
magazine cover. They quickly began to fall into character as they began to live their dreams. Before
they knew it, instructors Sergio Camacho and Jenny McShan were in the presence of scientists,
professional athletes and rock stars. With the help of Day Community Opportunity Specialist Dave
Whitaker, students were able to use photo-editing software to make their magazine covers come alive!
Dear Friends:
When we wrote to you one year ago, it was to shareour pride and excitement about the historic andenergizing changes that were taking place at LivingResources. We are very pleased and humbled toreport that our expectations regarding the impact ofthose changes in 2007 far exceeded our vision forthe organization.
Throughout the year, we shared the latest chapters of theLiving Resources story in our aptly named newsletters,Sharing the Journey. It is now time to pull all thosenews articles together in a way that truly reflects howfar we have come in just one year! Any discussion ofprogress, however, must be accompanied by the cautiousrecognition that there is still much to be done. LivingResources Boards of Directors, our 700 employees andthe 1,100 people we serve require that we meet eachchallenge with innovative programming, intellectualvigor and the physical stamina necessary to reach thenext milepost; with our 2007 corporate growth andachievements in hand, we believe we are well positionedto do so.
Perhaps the most important event impacting LivingResources in 2007 was our enhanced visual presence inthe community as a result of the construction of a per-manent headquarters on Washington Avenue Extension.Combining our administrative and program operationsat one location, easily accessible to all of the upstateareas, has not only been economically farsighted andlogistically supportive for the individuals and familieswe serve, but also environmentally responsible. Fromthe ground breaking in March to the move-in in August, the entire Living Resources family watched the rise ofour new home with a shared excitement that was alsovisible throughout the community. As the building tookshape, many friends of the organization sought namingopportunities that would allow them a lasting way inwhich to show their appreciation for all this agency hasdone for their families and for the people in our serviceareas. We are indeed grateful for their support.
Our larger quarters have also allowed us to establish theMiller Sanders Gallery where we showcase the awardwinning talents of our extraordinary artists and thetalented professional staff who guide and nurture them.In 2007, 13 Living Resources artists were featured in thegallery’s premier show. This event was so well receivedthat we chose to create the first ever Living Resourcescalendar which we shared throughout the community andthe art world. The gallery, which was named in honor ofLorraine Miller and Richard Sanders, has been featuringa remarkable series of shows ever since and has becomean important stop for all visitors coming to the agency toconduct business.
The pride we share with our individuals and their familiescould not have been more evident than when the firstgraduates of the College Experience Program receivedtheir certificates of completion at The College of SaintRose graduation on May 12, 2007. We will alwaysremember Emily, Kate and Marcie as the pioneers whoforged the trail for the next individuals who will takeadvantage of this life-changing experience. Our sincerethanks go out to them, their families and to the New YorkState Office of Mental Retardation and DevelopmentalDisabilities which provided the funding for thisunique program.
We will continue to share our challenges, as well as ourstrengths, as we communicate with our Living Resourcesfriends, families and community stakeholders.Remembering that fifty percent of effectivecommunication involves the art of active listening, weask that you continue to share your thoughts with us.Our committed board members and well-trained, caringstaff are ready to respond to your feedback and areespecially energized by the written comments you send uson the annual family surveys, and the thoughts andsuggestions you include with your letters, e-mails andphone messages. The end of the journey may never bewithin our sight, but sharing the journey will strengthenour resolve to meet every challenge along the way.
Sincerely,
Fredrick W. ErlichChief Executive Officer
Donald D. Bourque, Ph.DPresident, Board of Directors
Imagine the possibilities…
The Ground Breaking and Ribbon Cutting ceremonies for the new and permanent headquarters on WashingtonAvenue Extension represented a new chapter in the history of Living Resources. On March 8 and October 11,
community leaders, board members, family and friends came together to help us celebrate. The 34-year vision of ourfounders, including CEO Fred Erlich and Bishop Howard J. Hubbard was now a reality. The $7.6 million buildingwhich provides a strong, visible presence for Living Resources in the Capital Region is being financed with tax-exemptIDA bonds.
The College Experience Program (CEP) graduated three students at The College of Saint Rose commencementceremony at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on May 12, 2007. Congratulations to Emily, Kate and Marcie who
will always be remembered as the first of many young people to complete this special two-year certificate program, thatnot only provides a true college experience, but also allows people with developmental disabilities to hone the skills theywill need to transition to independent living in their communities.
Agroup of participants from the Living Resources Acquired Brain Injury program, working collectively under thename of Truly Blessed Ink, published its first book which they have entitled I Know You Won’t Forget. The book,
underwritten by the Living Resources Foundation, tells the story of a young boy whose mother suffers a traumatic braininjury (TBI). On September 25, 2007, the organization celebrated the nationwide release of the book with a booksigning party at the new headquarters.
Afour bedroom home in Delmar for four youngwomen was added to the Living Resources
slate of residences in October. The organizationnow includes 39 homes serving 230 residentsand 39 supportive apartments serving 41individuals. The increase in living spaces waspartly due to the acquisition of nine apartmentsin the City of Albany from the Office of MentalRetardation and Developmental Disabilities. Many of the individuals living in apartmentshave jobs in the community and must be able toindependently call for help in case of anemergency.
In addition to a patient caseload consisting ofhome-bound elderly clients across four
counties, the Licensed Home Care Agencycontinued to provide over 26,000 hours ofsupplemental staffing for open positions in LivingResources residences during the weekend and lateafternoon hours of care. The agency alsoreceived approval as a Home and CommunitySupport Services (HCSS) provider for individualswith brain injuries enrolled in the Department ofHealth brain injury waiver. Staff training ofPersonal Care Aides continued throughout the yearto insure that the agency would meet all HCSSeducational requirements.

Living Resources Annual Report 2007
Rotaract, a “Junior Rotary Club” sponsored byLiving Resources, is a volunteer service
organization for adult individuals with disabilities.Eighteen members make up our agency group alongwith one part-time staff. During the past year, Rotaracthas volunteered at a local adult home, an animalshelter and the Capital District Regional Food Bank.
In conjunction with the Imagine this… communityappeal, Living Resources staff established a unique
employee-driven component to this three-yearcampaign. The purpose of the employee fund is to meetthe needs of those we serve which cannot be funded anyother way. The campaign is simply called the EmployeeAppeal and all funds are raised through staff events orpledged through payroll deductions. November 1, 2007was the kick-off date for the three-year, $50,000campaign; by year’s end, employees had proudly raisedover $15,000.
It has been another banner, award-winning year for theCarriage House Arts Center (CHAC). Requests for
exhibits by the CHAC artists included the 4th AnnualNature Art Exhibit at the Thatcher Park Nature Center, the Earth Day Show in April and the 9th Annual ArtsShowcase during summer 2007 at the Albany VisitorsCenter, and the 7th Annual National Exhibition for Artists with Disabilities at Sunnyview Hospital. The acrylic paintingby CHAC artist Kelsey Brennan entitled Mums was awarded the cover of the New York State Association of Communityand Residential Agencies events calendar distributed statewide at the annual conference and art show held at TheSagamore in Lake George, New York.
Chief Executive Officer Fredrick W. Erlich was honored by The Academy for Character Education at the SageColleges with the 2007 Civic Leadership Award on March 21 at the annual Champions of Character Awards
Banquet. The award recognized Fred’s many years of service on behalf of individuals with disabilities, his manifest visionof all that still needs to be done for this special segment of the population and his strong advocacy for communitysupport and inclusion.
The 2007 Family Survey was a compilation of 130 family responses. In answer to the question of “how you wouldrate the overall quality of this program,” 99% of our families responded excellent or good. 128 staff members were
also acknowledged by name for their excellent work with our individuals and families. A parent’s description of theagency as “friendly, responsive, cooperative and caring and the client always comes first,” says it all when it comes torating Living Resources customer service!
The much anticipated Annual Agency Picnic for friends and family took place on July 20 at Krause’s Pavilion in CliftonPark. Attendance exceeded 550 and the weather and food also exceeded everyone’s expectations. The presentation
of Living Resources jackets to ten new members of the 25 Year Club was the highlight of the summer event; four 30-yearblankets were also part of the presentations. Over 50 of the 268 individuals receiving residential services have been partof the Living Resources family for 25 or more years.
Imagine the possibilities…
Voluntary Residential Maintenance Program grants from the NYS Office of Mental Retardation andDevelopmental Disabilities totaled $247,643 in 2007. Projects funded through these special grants included
renovations to kitchens and bathrooms, roof replacements at three houses, the installation of new fire alertsystems and the repaving of house driveways. New emergency generators were also installed at seven residences.
The Training Department which is responsible for the coordination of staff orientation, staff professionaldevelopment and state mandated re-certification trainings, added evening and weekend classes to its schedule
in order to meet the needs of our growing staff numbers. The trainers estimated they spent over 1200 hours ofactual classroom time including orientation for 187 new hires and several recertification classes for current staffin CPR, basic first-aid and Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention. In the spring of 2007, thedepartment, in collaboration with the CEO, also conducted a special series of seminars call Conversations inManagement for the agency directors who supervise over 650 full and part-time staff.
In September 2007, Living Resources began a unique collaboration with Union College in Schenectady to servestudents with Asperger’s Syndrome. In an effort to help some of Union’s best and brightest challenged by this
developmental disability, the agency held weekly group sessions where students learned skills that would aid themin their struggles to understand social cues and the subtleties of humor which were not meant to be taken literally. In group, students identified many challenging social situations and worked to improve their ability to mix withthe general academic settings. With the exception of one graduate, all students plan to participate in thisprogram for another year.
F iscal indicators of the corporation’s businesshealth continued to be strong and positive.
The ratio of current assets to liabilities increasedin 2007 and corporate revenue for bothresidential and non-residential programsincreased by a combined total of 8.7%.
W ith the beginning of the 2007-2008 schoolyear, Employment Services started a School
to Work Program partnership with theShenendehowa School District. Funded by athree-year New York State Education Grant, theprogram serves high school students with a widerange of cognitive disabilities. The purpose ofthis transition program is to provide studentswith an opportunity to develop anunderstanding of workplace skills along with achance to practice those skills with a LivingResources job coach. In addition to jobcoaching, Employment Services staff also developappropriate job sites in the Clifton Park area ofSaratoga County for the students.
