A message from John Forester 2008 Campaign Chair
Dear Friends:
I am writing to express my sincere appreciation to you for a job well done. As you know, the 2008 United Way Campaign for Monongalia and Preston Counties was successfully concluded on December 19, 2007 with the results exceeding our goal of $1,400,000. Simply put, We are stronger… thanks to each one of YOU!
Our United Way strengthens communities by working together to efficiently and effectively coordinate resources for those in need. The impact of one person’s contribution is magnified many times over by the extraordinary power of teamwork. Our United Way strengthens our communities by demonstrating accountability, responsibility, and transparency in everything we do.
YOUr efforts, and the results they produced, have strengthened our
community and have clearly illustrated that our campaign theme – “Thanks to You…We Are Stronger” – couldn’t have been more appropriate. This past campaign has shown me the positive difference that can be made, the strength that can be shown, when thousands of people give their money, time and talent to support United Way’s mission.
I am proud to have been associated in this effort with you and proud to call you my friend. Thank you. With Best Regards, John Forester 2008 United Way Campaign Chair
There’s strength in leadership.

A message from Jena Prokopchuk United Way Executive Director
Dear Friend of United Way: In 2007, our United Way conducted a strategic planning process. After the information was gathered, surveys compiled and focus groups conducted, we decided to frame our strategic plan around United Way of America’s Standards of Excellence. Below are the five main components of the Standards of Excellence: *Community Engagement and Vision: Engage and inspire communities to create a shared vision for the future and set goals for collective action. *Impact Strategies, Resources and Results: Develop strategies that will achieve measurable and lasting change in community conditions, mobilize necessary resources and put them to work to produce positive results and improve lives. *Relationship Building and Brand Management: Develop, maintain and grow relationships with individuals and organizations in order to attract and sustain resources to support United Way’s mission. *Organizational Leadership and Governance: Garner trust, legitimacy and support through leadership and overall management. *Operations: Provide efficient and cost-effective systems, policies and processes that enable the delivery of United Way’s mission-related work and ensure the highest levels of transparency and accountability. The strategies, goals and actions within our strategic plan are based on these standards. We believe that they will provide a road map for excellence in all aspects of our work. By following this roadmap, our United Way can continue to grow. We will grow not only through the funds we raise, but also through the volunteers we mobilize, relationships we build, efficiency we achieve and accountability we earn. Thank you for your commitment to excellence. Jena Prokopchuk Executive Director

A message from Kim Barnum United Way Board President
There’s strength in teamwork.
Dear Friends: A lot of lip service is given to the importance of teamwork. But at United Way, it is essential to our success. Meeting our annual fundraising goal takes the efforts of many. It is the result of thousands of financial gifts, and requires the work of hundreds of campaign volunteers serving in multiple ways. Meeting our strategic goals also requires the efforts of many. The pooled knowledge and commitment of many is essential to provide the important leadership needed to push our mission forward and oversee our vision for the future. It’s a fact. Our success at United Way is the sum of many acts, both small and large. Teamwork is critical to our success; and working together ultimately strengthens us all. Thanks to you….we are stronger. Kim Barnum President, Board of Directors

A message from Suzanne Marsh Treasurer
There’s strength in numbers.
Dear Friends: Under the direction of the United Way’s staff, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors, I am happy to report that the United Way saw a strong financial end to 2007. Throughout the year, we continued to strive for the highest standards of financial accountability by engaging many strong, thoughtful community volunteer leaders, by regularly reviewing monthly revenues and expenses, through our annual audit conducted by certified public accountants, and by reviewing applicant organizations through our annual allocation process. Our United Way staff also continued to work very hard to keep administrative and fundraising costs low. These elements are critical as we strive to build and maintain the trust of our community by being good stewards of the generous contributions that our donors make. Even through difficult economic times, we are rewarded for upholding high standards of accountability as we continue to exceed campaign goals. We will, however, never take this trust lightly and will continue to make every effort to efficiently use donors’ contributions. As I close out my time as treasurer, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and the Board of Directors for all of your support. It has indeed been an honor and pleasure to serve this organization in this capacity. Sincerely, Suzanne Marsh Treasurer

A message from the Volunteer Connection
There’s strength in caring.
New Name…Same Mission
The Volunteer Action Center has changed its name to The Volunteer Connection. Although the name has changed, our goal is the same: to become the leader in meeting agency and community needs through volunteerism. The new name clarifies our goal and aligns us with United Way’s overall mission.
Through the Volunteer Connection’s referral service, we continue to match volunteers with opportunities at over 90 local non profits. In the coming year, we will develop measures to assess the effectiveness of this service. The Corporate Volunteer Council, a joint partnership with the Monongalia County Family Resource Network, strengthens our ties to the workplace, and engages business leaders in monthly community service projects. Numerous special events including Day of Caring, Blue and Gold Mine Sale, and Random Acts of Kindness mobilize hundreds of volunteers and promote the importance of giving back. The financial impact and community spirit generated from these events is unmatched. We also realize the importance of education, training and volunteer recognition. Training sessions strengthen the skills of non profit professionals. Volunteer recognition, including a recognition picnic is coordinated to help agencies acknowledge their volunteers. Through many service learning initiatives and volunteer projects, United Way’s Youth Connection builds upon our future by mobilizing our community’s children. Strong partnerships and a supportive caring community make us confident we will attain our goal of becoming the leader in volunteer recruitment and management. With a new name and renewed energy we will build upon our 10 year history of success. Linda Patterson & Kelly Nix Co-chairs, United Way Volunteer Connection
