“Change” is a buzzword we’re hearing a lot these days. At the Paley Center, it’s been more than just buzz. The past year has
been one of exciting evolution for us, beginning with our name change from The Museum of Television & Radio in June 2007.
When our educators ask a class of eighth graders how they watch their favorite shows, most students say on their mobile
phones or laptops. Media is more pervasive than ever before, and its definition expands way beyond television and radio to
include a rising variety of delivery platforms. As The Paley Center for Media, we’re evolving with this landscape, exploring
media’s immense and growing significance within our culture, society, and history. And as our longtime friends certainly
know, the word “museum” has never fully captured who we are and what we do. We have always been media’s public
square, the place for conversation with media’s brightest minds and most creative talents, using media as a lens through
which we gain understanding of the world around us. Increasingly, we’re also the leading forum for the industry to debate
its biggest challenges and discover its greatest opportunities. Our new name expresses our role in the twenty-first century,
while paying tribute to our founder, William S. Paley, a true industry pioneer.
In 2007, we focused our lens on the power of media to take us to other corners of the globe and shed light on little-
understood—or misunderstood—cultures. Our spring subscription series was devoted to insight into the people, the
events, and the current conflicts of the Middle East. Our discussions included Women, the Media, and the Middle East
moderated by Barbara Walters; Covering the World: Al Jazeera; and The War of Information in the Middle East, among others. The
accompanying Window to the Middle East media exhibit gave visitors a rare opportunity to observe Middle Eastern beliefs,
attitudes, values, and preoccupations by showcasing unfiltered news and entertainment programming from the region.
This unique exhibit featured programming—not readily available in the U.S.—from more than a dozen countries.
Important new partnerships are bringing our public events to more people, in more places. Yahoo! TV, Comcast’s
Fancast.com, iTunes, RealNetworks, and Audible.com are a few of the content providers that are featuring video of popular
Paley fare, such as our conversations with the creative teams behind The Office, Lost, American Idol, The Wire, and Gossip Girl.
Paley video has been watched over two million times since our first partnerships began. However, with a wide selection
of clips from past events, paleycenter.org is the best place to relive favorite moments of recent discussions or to see what
you’ve been missing!
While you’re on our website, check out the section devoted to our multiyear initiative, She Made It: Women Creating Television
and Radio. You will find detailed bios, curatorial essays, and clips relating to our 150 honorees—some of the most remarkable
women writers, directors, producers, journalists, sportscasters, and executives in media—as well as information on the
initiative’s next phase, AllThingsMedia, the first-ever venture capital forum for women entrepreneurs in the media space.
Our ever-expanding collection—which is now inclusive of all electronic media—provides the foundation for our education
programs, which augment in-class curriculum and hone media literacy skills. In 2007 our K-12 class program served
approximately twenty thousand students and educators, and we were proud to host, once again, the Urban Visionaries
Youth Film Festival, creating a forum for young media makers to present their films in front of a packed theater of their peers.
With over three hundred members, our Media Council convenes top executives across all sectors of media to explore the
most critical issues facing the industry. Among the almost-forty events in 2007, we welcomed as speakers Dick Parsons
of Time Warner, Blair Westlake of Microsoft, Cathie Black of Hearst, Sean McManus of CBS, and Anne Sweeney of Disney.
Our International Council, comprised of leading media executives from around the world, met at the very epicenter of
convergence of traditional and emerging media, Silicon Valley, thanks to our hosts Google, Yahoo!, and Sun Microsystems.
This quick glimpse of the many ways we are transforming ourselves in this digital era only hints at important developments
underway. We have launched a major Comprehensive Campaign to amplify the reach, scope, and impact of our
programming and collection. We reached our Phase 1 fundraising goal of $20 million by the end of 2007 and continue to
make excellent progress toward the overall goal of $30 million. Our generous Campaign contributors can be found on our
Donor List, page 44.
We couldn’t accomplish any of this without the dedicated advocacy and leadership of our Board of Trustees, led by our
remarkable Chairman, Frank Bennack. We owe countless debts of gratitude to them, as well as our Los Angeles Board of
Governors, Media Council Board of Governors, loyal supporters, and the public and media industry. We look forward to
seeing you at the Paley Center often in 2008.

The Paley Center for Media is the premier institution dedicated to advancing the understanding of media—its artistic value, social impact, and historical importance—for the public and media professionals.
The Paley Center, with locations in New York and Los Angeles, is home to the nation’s foremost public archive of television and radio programming, a collection of more than 140,000 programs covering almost one hundred years of television and radio history, including news, public affairs programs, documentaries, performing arts programs, children’s programming, sports, comedy and variety shows, and commercial advertising.
Drawing upon this collection and its unparalleled curatorial expertise, the Paley Center convenes the public, industry professionals, thought leaders, and the creative community for a broad range of forums—more than one hundred a year—that explore media’s past and present and anticipate its future.
The Paley Center’s public programs examine and celebrate the creativity, the innovations, the personalities, and the leaders who are shaping media. Throughout the year, the Paley Center hosts discussions with influential newsmakers, journalists, and thought leaders on today’s important issues, as well as celebrating excellence in drama, comedy, and documentary film with a range of events that examine the creative process behind great entertainment. Annual public programming highlights include the popular William S. Paley Television Festival held in Los Angeles and a documentary festival in New York.
Educational outreach efforts, such as the University Seminar Series, bring select Paley Center discussions into college classrooms across the country via satellite link or the Internet to connect with a network of more than five hundred schools in forty-nine states.
Through the industry programs of its Media Council and International Council, the Paley Center also serves as a neutral setting where media professionals can engage in discussion and debate about the evolving media landscape. The Paley Center’s Media Council is a membership organization composed of top-level executives that serves as an intellectual center for the media industry and a forum for discussing major issues facing the world’s media, communications, and technology industries. 00Serving the global media landscape, the Paley Center’s International Council connects leading media executives from around the world with their U.S. peers to foster partnerships and share insights on the challenges and opportunities in the international media marketplace.
Previously known as The Museum of Television & Radio, the Paley Center was founded in 1975 by William S. Paley, the founder of CBS and a pioneering innovator in the industry. For more information, please visit: www.paleycenter.org.
Please note: The Museum of Television & Radio changed its name to The Paley Center for Media on June 5, 2007. For the purposes of this report, all references to this institution will be The Paley Center for Media.

She Made It: Women Creating Television and Radio is a multiyear initiative to build a unique collection of radio and television programming that celebrates the achievements of great women writers, directors, producers, sportscasters, journalists, and executives.
She Made It recognizes the early female trailblazers, the current level of power and prominence women have in the industry, and the exciting potential for new generations of women entering the business in the twenty-first century.
Since fall 2005, She Made It has presented a dynamic calendar of activities in New York and Los Angeles, including special panel discussions for the public and a university satellite audience, and a website, shemadeit.org.
The Paley Center is expanding She Made It into new areas. We are partnering with Springboard Enterprises—a national organization dedicated to accelerating women’s success in building high-growth companies—to launch ALLTHINGSMEDIA, a venture capital forum aimed at helping female media entrepreneurs gain access to the capital they need to take their media businesses to the next level.

Education
The Paley Center’s Education Department serves groups of students of all ages, educators, academic administrators and community leaders with diverse constituencies. Using radio and television programs from the Collection, Educators lead discussion-based classes that encourage critical thinking about key themes and issues that have shaped contemporary society. While the medium is television or radio, the subject may be advertising, the Vietnam conflict, the changing role of women, political campaigns, communities around the world, or many others.
The Education Department is also involved in a series of special initiatives that reach out to the community, such as the Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival, Docu-Jam: A Youth Documentary Showcase, and Re-creating Radio.
Classes are presented to school groups both at the Paley Center in New York and offsite through video conferencing.
Funding for the Education Program has been generously provided by an endowment from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and Leo J. Hindery, Jr.
For additional support, the Paley Center wishes to thank: The Annenberg Foundation, Bank of America, Joan Ganz Cooney, The Richard Eaton Foundation, Polycom, and Materials for the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs/NYC Department of Sanitation/NYC Department of Education. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Acquisitions for the Collection
On an ongoing basis, the Paley Center acquires television and radio programming from networks, production companies, local stations, and private individuals. Goals to broaden the collection encompass not only historic and contemporary programs from network, cable, and local companies, but also a greater representation of syndicated and international material.
Highlights of these acquisitions include:
Television Programming
From HBO we acquired 87 hours of programming, including several original movies; episodes of such series as Big Love, Entourage, and Flight of the Conchords; and the final season of The Sopranos, giving us a complete collection of all episodes of this series.
From Logo we acquired episodes of some of their original series and specials to launch an upcoming collaboration with them.
From Universal we received four programs from the early seventies directed by Steven Spielberg: two episodes of The Psychiatrist, an episode of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, and the TV pilot Savage starring Martin Landau.
From our long-term arrangement with the ABC Television Network we received a wide variety of programs, including: Reports of major events, as covered by the national news and special reports; premieres and finales of many series of all types; coverage of important sporting events; and other significant programming.
From Showtime we acquired three original television movies, including In the Time of the Butterflies and The Maldonado Miracle, to represent the work of She Made It honoree Salma Hayek.
She Made It honorees Claire Labine and Christine Ockrent each donated several examples of their respective work. Ms. Labine sent over important episodes of One Life to Live, General Hospital, and As the World Turns, while Ms. Ockrent gave us several examples of her numerous news/public affairs/interview programs from French television.
The Paley Center received thirteen filmed programs and segments from puppeteer and entertainer Marshall Izen. Mr. Izen cocreated and performed on Tottle, a local Philadelphia children’s television show that featured Mr. Izen and his musically talented puppets. The donation also includes Mr. Izen’s guest

ances with his puppets on The Kate Smith Show, The Tonight Show, Captain Kangaroo, and Wonderama, all from the fifties and sixties.
A large donation of programs was received from Jay Tarses. The donation includes episodes of The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Slap Maxwell, and The Tony Randall Show.
From the son of stage and screen actress, sixties and seventies television personality, consumer advocate, and New York City’s main “Pooper-Scooper Law” proponent, Fran Lee, we acquired a number of television segments and complete programs featuring her appearances.
Based on the suggestion of a midwestern fan of the Center, we acquired from Mary Scarbrough, senior producer/director, WFWA-DT, PBS 39, Fort Wayne, Indiana, a documentary she directed entitled Ann Colone Remembers, a look at the life and career of Ann Colone, who for 18 years, spanning the sixties to the eighties, hosted her own extremely popular afternoon show on WANE-TV in Fort Wayne.
We continued our acquisition of Peabody Award–winning programs, including: The Boondocks: “The Return of the King” (episode 110), a controversial episode of the controversial cartoon series; Good Eats: “Pop Art,” an educational appreciation of popcorn; Out of Control: AIDS in Black America, a special documentary from ABC News; ABC News: Brian Ross Investigates: “Conduct Unbecoming,” a compilation of broadcast and web stories covering a year-long investigation into the Congressman Mark Foley congressional page scandal; and “Left Behind: The Failure of East St. Louis Schools,” a series of news stories from KMOV-TV, St. Louis, Missouri.
For the Paley Center’s She Made It initiative, we acquired over ten hours of programs from New Delhi Television in India, in honor of NDTV founder Radhika Roy; dozens of programs from USA Network and Sci Fi Channel, including the landmark 2002 miniseries Steven Spielberg Presents Taken in honor of Bonnie Hammer; more than ten hours of Suze Orman’s PBS specials and two hours of her CNBC program; and all ten seasons (236 episodes) of the NBC sitcom Friends in honor of executive producer Marta Kauffman.
For the seminar on Mideast Women Journalists, we acquired ten hours of programming from May Chidiac, Ghida Fakhry, and Muna Abusulayman.
As part of our opera collection, we acquired seven rare early fifties Opera Cameos programs (which aired on the Dumont network) from Joseph C. Vinti, son of the show’s creator and executive producer. (Opera News magazine did a feature article on this Paley Center acquisition in the November ’07 issue.) We also acquired ten hours of opera televised in Europe in the sixties and seventies from the personal collection of soprano Arlene Saunders; and—from the personal
collection of tenor David Lloyd—an NET Opera production (Janacek’s House of the Dead) and American composer Gunther Schuller’s The Fisherman and His Wife, starring Mr. Lloyd.
For the Ethel Merman centennial celebration, we acquired six hours of programming, including a copy (from Merman’s own personal collection) of the 1954 telecast of Anything Goes starring Merman, Frank Sinatra, and Bert Lahr.
Radio Programming
We acquired from former Good Morning America correspondent Denise Richardson a collection of her radio work at 99X and WLIB-AM from the seventies and eighties. (Richardson, a frequent cohost of the New York portion of the Channel 13 WNET Fund Drive, also hosted Good Day Street Talk on Fox 5 WNYW and guest starred as a reporter on an episode of The Sopranos).
From the daughter and granddaughter of Natalie Purvin Prager (a contemporary of and sometimes coworker of She Made It honoree Nila Mack), we received transcription discs and related materials of Ms. Prager’s forties children’s radio game show, March of Games.
WFAN donated several reels of historic broadcasts documenting the history of this country’s first all-sports radio station.
NPR and producer Ira Glass continue to donate episodes of its award-winning series This American Life.
Archivist Vince DiPalma donated cassettes of rare Monitor programs, as well as two complete Brooklyn Dodger games from the midfifties.
We received—from the estate of conductor Andre Kostelanetz—CD copies of more than fifty hours of radio programs spanning a fifty-year period beginning in the thirties.
Advertisements
We received the winners of the 2007 One Show, one of the most prestigious advertising competitions in the world, sponsored by the One Club for Art & Copy.
Adweek magazine continues to donate monthly reels of Adweek Best Spots, containing the most notable television commercials produced in the previous year.
