Serving as the only head coach in the

history of the Colby-Sawyer men’s soccer program, Peter Steese is set to begin his 18th season with the Chargers.

Last season the Chargers qualified for their 11th con-secutive conference tournament, but

were sent home in the quarterfinal round,

falling to New England College, 2-1.

Over his 17 seasons, Coach Steese has com-piled a 152-145-26 record and led the pro-gram to its only conference championship in 1997. The Chargers have posted a 71-39-11 conference record under Coach Steese’s direc-tion including a program best 7-3-1 record in both the 2000 and 2002 seasons.

Before taking over the men’s program at Colby-Sawyer, Coach Steese served as the head coach of the women’s program, a posi-tion he held for four seasons. He guided the women’s team to a 28-34-4 mark in four years, including their winningest season in school history, an 11-3-1 mark in 1990.

Coach Steese has also served two three-year terms as chair of the New England Inter-collegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Honors Committee and as The Commonwealth Coast Conference liaison to the NCAA Division III Selection Committee. He has also been a staff coach for the New Hampshire Olympic Development program for the past 21 years. Coach Steese founded the Unitor Soccer

School in 1990 and the Greater Kearsarge Soc-cer Club in 1996.

Coach Steese, a 1974 graduate of the Uni-versity of Maryland, holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier National Diploma and a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B license. Coach Steese earned a Masters Degree from the University of Maryland in German Litera-ture.

Coach Steese also serves as the Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach, a posi-tion he has held for the past 12 years.

Coach Steese, his wife Cheryl and his three daughters Cameron, Julia and Georgia, reside in Wilmot, N.H.

Page 6: 2007 Colby-Sawyer Men’s Soccer

Set to kickoff the 2007 season, the Colby-Sawyer men’s soccer team hopes a mix of experience and youth will lead the Chargers to the top of The Commonwealth Coast Conference standings.

Last season the Chargers finished the season 6-11-2 overall, 4-5-2 in TCCC play. Injuries played a major role, as five starters from last year’s squad fell prey to season-ending injuries early, leaving the Chargers without several offensive and defensive weapons.

This year’s team, with 30-plus play-ers, hopes to have the depth and talent at every position to give the Chargers their first winning season since 2002 and commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Colby-Sawyer’s first conference championship with a positive result.

This season the Chargers return nine of 10 play-ers that scored goals for them last season, in-cluding their top two scorers, junior Doug Currie (Harvard, Mass.) and senior Chris Rafferty (Milford, Mass.). Last season the Chargers offense ranked seventh in the league, averaging just over 1.2 goals per game. This season, the Chargers hope to improve on that number, knowing that as the offense goes, so go the Chargers.

Also looking to give the Chargers a spark on the offensive side of the ball are juniors Luke Driscoll (Littleton, N.H.), Ryan Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.) and Brian Doucette (Boxford, Mass.) along with newcomer Corey McKean (Lisbon, N.H.).

“Chris Rafferty, Brian Doucette and Currie are back as our goal scor-

ers,” said 18th year Head Coach Peter Steese. “I also think Corey McKean will sur-

prise some people. He is very quick and will give people problems. Luke Driscoll, Ryan Oldfield and Brian Doucette give us the depth we need to help avoid the injury issues we had last year. We will have a quite a bit up top to help us out.”

Looking to feed those forwards is this year’s class of midfield-

ers. Seniors Nic DeZenzo (Methuen, Mass.), Pat Col-

bert (Medfield, Mass.), James Daley (Coventry, R.I.), Tyler Davis (Laconia, N.H.) and Kevin Brisebois (Sterling, Mass.) all look to see time in midfield, with Mason Law (Stratford, Conn.), Tyler Simpson (Topsham, Maine) and Chris Blue (Center Harbor, N.H.) all competing for time in a crowded midfield position.

Last season’s midfield crew returns intact, giving the Chargers the advantage of an experienced

group working. The hope is that this year’s crew will be able to

provide even more goal-scoring opportunities for

the Chargers.

“Kevin Brisebois is back from an injury

and Nic DeZenzo is back to his old self,” said Coach Steese. “Jim

Daley is playing the best he ever has. Tyler Davis has been doing very

well as is Mason Law. Chris Blue has been a welcome addition. This group has some great speed and will be an asset to our team.”

Standing in the way of opposing team’s attempts to score will be the Chargers defense, anchored by senior Tony Soto (Roch-ester, N.H.) and juniors Pat Benson (Essex, Vt.) and Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.). Adding to the mix will be sophomore Justin Varney (Bel-fast, Maine) and freshmen Corey Vancura (Whitman, Mass.), Jacob Farmer (Topsham, Maine), Travis Provost (Stratham, N.H.), Erick Melan-son (Beverly, Mass.), Justin Simpson (Topsham, Maine) and Doug McLaughlin (Derry, N.H.).

Last year’s team ranked 10th in the conference in goals allowed, allowing just over two goals per game. This year’s team, with a strong defense and three talented goalkeepers, hopes to keep that from happening.

“Tony Soto has looked exceptional this preseason, Tom White has looked very strong and Pat Benson has been stellar” said Coach Steese. “Doug McLaugh-lin is doing very well, Justin Simpson is coming on, Erick Melanson is getting more comfortable in the back and Travis Provost is making tremendous prog-ress. Jacob Farmer is finding his way, Corey Vancura has been very strong and Justin Varney is coming on after a preseason injury. This group will have a great effect on how our season goes.”

In net this season for the Chargers will be one of a trio of keepers more than

able to stifle opposing offenses. Sophomore Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) played in 14

games last season for the Chargers and registered three

shutouts. Feltes went 4-4-2 in goal, registering 105 saves on the season

This season, Feltes will feel pressure from two talented freshmen, Will Berry (Ber-lin, Vt.) and T.J. Dougherty (East Gamby,

Conn.). Both come from successful high school programs and add extra height into the

equation for Coach Steese.

“As we head into the season, Chris Feltes will be our starter,” said Coach Steese. “Will Berry and T.J. Dougherty have looked

good in practice as well and will help push Chris (Feltes) to be even better.”

Set to begin the 2007 season Colby-Sawyer’s schedule does them no favors. Out of the gate, the Chargers face Union College (N.Y.) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Red Hawk Classic, playing on back-to-back days. The Chargers then go on the road for two games,

including TCCC opener against Curry Col-lege on Sept. 11. The Chargers then return

to Kelsey Field for their home opener against Anna Maria on Sept. 15.

“We need to be better overall than last year,” said Coach Steese on the plan for 2007.

“If we tighten up, get more scoring and stay healthy, good things

will happen.”

The 2006 Colby-Sawyer men’s soccer team finished the season 6-11-2 overall, 4-5-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Char-gers made the conference tournament for the 11th consecutive time, but suffered an early exit, falling to New England College, 2-1 in the quarterfinal round.

The Chargers posted a 3-5-2 record in the month of September, picking up a non-confer-ence win against Green Mountain and two huge conference wins over Gordon, 2-1 (OT), and Endicott, 2-0. The Chargers’ two ties came against the Univer-sity of New England and New England College, 0-0 and 1-1 respectively. Losses came against the likes of RPI, Union, Nichols, Salve Regina, and Middlebury, all teams known throughout the region as being perennial powerhouses.

October brought the Chargers three more wins and five more losses as they closed out the

regular season on a two-game skid, falling to Brandeis, 9-0 and to Wentworth, 2-1, dropping

to the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.

In the quarterfinal game against New England College, the Char-

gers struck first, late in the first half, but

two late goals by the Pil-grims proved

to be the difference as the Chargers dropped their open-

ing round The Commonwealth Coast Conference match, 2-1.

For their efforts on the season, junior Chris Rafferty was selected as First Team All-Conference and junior Nic DeZenzo was selected as

Second Team All-Conference.

The 2007 Colby-Sawyer men’s soccer team would like to dedicate their play during the season to the memory of teammate Corey Worsham (1986-

2006) who was killed last year in a motorcycle accident. Corey’s No. 16 jersey will be retired and the team will wear black arm bands with his initials in memory of their fallen friend and teammate.

Established in 1984, The Commonwealth Coast Conference provides each student-athlete with a positive experience in their pursuit of excellence, through high academic standards, quality competition, and a meaningful student life. The conference sponsors intercollegiate competition among its members in a variety of sports and supports the NCAA Division III philosophy.

Originally a conference for just men’s basketball, play began in 1984 and includ-ed seven teams; Anna Maria, Coast Guard Academy, Curry, Emerson, Hellenic, Salve Regina and Wentworth.

Roger Williams joined the conference in the spring of 1985 and Hellenic with-drew that fall, as the conference retained seven members. Also added in 1985 was a men’s cross country championship.

Women’s basketball and men’s soccer were also added as conference sports in 1986. Also in ’86, Gordon joined the conference fold, becoming its eighth member.

In the fall of 1989, Regis College joined the conference and a softball cham-pionship was added. In the fall of that same year, New England College took Emerson’s place in the conference.

Over the next several years, four more teams were added, including Eastern Nazarene (1992), Colby-Sawyer and Nichols (1994), and the University of New England (1999), putting the conference membership at 13.

Over the years the conference also grew in the number of championships it offered, until in the 2006-07 school it sponsored 15 championships in 10 differ-ent sports.

This fall, the conference adds its 14th member, Western New England. Also new this fall is the addition of the conference’s first full-time commissioner, Gregg Kayne.
