Perform
Engineering
Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE)Knowledge Based Engineering is the ability to create
a design taking into account a company’s existing
knowledge as well as company standards or
international rules.
This knowledge is captured and formalized, so that it is
directly available to an engineer with a certain level of
automation, to reach the optimum level of benefit.
Requirements
Result (Data)
User(s) interacting
Computer automating
1st challenge is to achieve the engineering efficiently
Knowledge BasedEngineering
2nd challenge is to maintain, manage & share this
Knowledge across the people and across the programs

Template Management
Catalogs
Can store features, parts, knowledge, products and processes
Configurable and Searchable by type, name, parameters, etc.
Visual representations of geometry
Can be populated by spreadsheet
Allow for dependent and independent instances (change the template, instances can change or not)
DASSAULT SYSTEMES – Jun 2006 Page 14
Template Management Example
Catalog can contain every type of
template in CATIA.
Catalogs can be organized into
chapters, families, keywords, etc.
Searches can be on name, type,
parameters, etc

Feature Templates Example
Ability to place into a part. Only
need to select a point and direction
Change:
•The number of ribs
•The size
•The draft
•Hole or No HoleComplex or
as simple as needed
Drives repeatability

company specs

Product Templates Example
Replace an already existing roof surface and an existing cutout and the geometry will morph to fit. Change parameter to ensure proper fit and function
Ensure that the correct number of bows are activated.

Product Knowledge Templates Example
Adaptive geometry – select a roof and a cutout.
The geometry, drawings, analysis and NC outputs are automatically created.
Input based morphing from robust paramterized data
Links managed automatically

Business Knowledge Templates
Business Process Knowledge Templates not only capture the knowledge of how a component should behave, but also the process to develop, study and optimize the component
The process of creation, analysis and optimization is captured in CATIA V5
They are built on Feature, Part, Knowledge, and Product Knowledge Templates
Knowledge is captured in the process not the CAD Data
BKT’s are workbenches built inside CATIA V5 with no need for hard coding.
Similar to wizards, but no programming and BKT’s allow full access to the CATIA V5 API’s

Functional Molded Part (FMP)
The key characteristics of the functional modeling approach:
A unique and revolutionary technology in the world of
computer aided design.
Introduces features that encapsulate behaviors (ribs,
reinforcements, cutouts, rests, pockets, grills, bosses, draft,
chamfers, lips, …)
Shareable functional features allowing parallel design work
in the project team.

Intelligent Contextual Functions
Traditional Modelling
Always the same geometry no matter the modification morphing
Functional Modelling
Intelligence Always the same function but the geometry depends on the context
Ex. Can have a geometric result or not with a cut-out/push/pull function depending on the position of the packaging
Robustness Definition does not rely on face & edge selection
Function = Feature + Behavior
DASSAULT SYSTEMES – Jun 2006 Page 26
Imagine and Shape
The key characteristics of the Imagine and Shape:
A unique and revolutionary technology in the world of
conceptional design.
Introduces Subdivision Surface Technology to the CAD world. G2
Continuity ensures surface quality
Ease of Use and the ability to control with parametric geometry
brings the conceptional and the engineering worlds together

CATIA for Auto Supplies Initiative
What is the Initiative?
Supplier-focused solutions bringing product design excellence and
collaboration at an attractive price.
These solutions
Require low start-up time and cost,
Help automotive suppliers win and keep new business
Help to bid more effectively, as well as
Aid in developing and delivering innovative products at competitive
prices
Enable better re-use of proven designs and know-how
Promote collaboration and optimizing design management
DASSAULT SYSTEMES – Jun 2006 Page 34
How is the Solution going to do this?
StandardizationStandardization
Engineering design rules and know-how are captured and embedded in the design definition, enhancing the sharing and reuse of knowledge.
Promotes standardization of:
pre-defined standards
customized components
Contribute to cost reductionContribute to cost reduction
Standardization of components reduces buying, manufacturing, storing and maintenance costs.
Automatic update of associated tool designs when a part model changes, offering dramatic labor design savings.
Ensure qualityEnsure quality
Capturing knowledge facilitates interactive designs checks.
Full 3D becomes ‘The Master’ that can be reused for other areas such as simulation and NC.
Better Digital Manufacturing simulation and validation facilitates the creation customer proposals and quotations with higher accuracy.
