Olivet College head volleyball coach John Miller is ready tobegin his second season. He quickly turned his focus to this seasonat the conclusion of the winless 2006 campaign.

“Even though last season was frustrating, I saw a lot of positive,”said Miller. “I knew what we had to build upon, and I felt comfortablewith some of the players who would be back. I also knew recruitingwas going to be important.”

In 2007, the Comets will be led by junior middle hitter and co-captain Mackenzie Heator (Union City). Last year, she led theteam with 190 kills and 62 blocks. In two seasons at Olivet, Heatorhas recorded 395 kills and 156 blocks.

“Mackenzie’s commitment to the program during spring ball mademe decide that she was ready to be one of our captains,” Millersaid. “Despite being heavily involved in track, she came to everyspring practice. I expect her to step it up and lead this team.”

Junior Kim Travis (Shepherd) and sophomore co-captainJennie Malm (Bridgman) are also back in the front row. Last year,Travis was second on the team with 179 kills, followed by Malm with153. Malm also contributed in the back row, tallying 202 digs.

“I am not sure if Kim is going to be able to play this fall,” Millersays. “She had shoulder surgery in the off-season. Jennie is ourbest all-around player. Despite our struggles last year, she tried tokeep her teammates positive.”

Olivet also returns juniors Courtney Lewis (Battle Creek/St.Philip) and Natalee Singleton (Sand Lake/Lakeview). Playing in47 games, Lewis had 14 service aces and 152 digs. Singletonsaw action in 50 games and had 119 digs.

“Courtney could very easily be our best defensive player,”says Miller. “Natalee is just a fun person to be around and we hopeto feed off her positive energy.”

Seniors Jaime Kowalczyk (Wyandotte/Roosevelt) and KenzieSteward (Alma) have decided to play volleyball after being membersof Olivet’s women’s basketball team.

“Jamie is a natural athlete,” said Miller. “Not only is she goingto be a force offensively, but she is going to be force defensively atthe net, too. Kenzie has amazing hands and will be helping out atthe setter position.”

Juniors Ashley Adams (Hartland) and Lindsey Tarrant(Oxford) are transfers from Oakland Community College. “Ashleyand Lindsey bring a little bit of the competitiveness that was at thejunior college level to here,” Miller says.

The Comets welcome in a large recruiting class. Four first-yearplayers – Ashley Elston (Charlotte/Olivet), Jenessa Hicks (UnionCity), Brittani Kincaid (Gobles) and Ellen Schulz (Freeland) –have landed spots on the varsity team.

VOLLEYBALLMICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) isAmerica’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2007-08 school year marks the 121st consecutive year ofoperation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAAwas founded March 24, 1888. From the very beginning, the MIAAhas conducted full-season championships in multiple sports. Therehave been changes in some of the sports (bicycle racing and Indianclub juggling have long since disappeared, and basketball did noteven exist in 1888), but these changes have served to develop theMIAA into one of America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, todayoffering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schools that havehad full membership, eight are still members — Adrian, Albion, Alma,Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s. Significantly, notone of these eight colleges has ever belonged to any other formalleague. Albion and Olivet were charter members although Albion isthe only member to hold continuous membership. Ex-members areMichigan State University (1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University(1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), and Defiance College(1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960 until1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College ofIndiana were invited to join. It also marked the first time that the leagueadded members outside the state of Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that the name of the conference would not change. Theinaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888),Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet(1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as an associatemember for the purpose of competing in football. Wisconsin Lutheranannounced in 2005 that it will leave the MIAA after the 2007 season tojoin another conference.

Tri-State University of Angola, Ind., became a conference memberin 2004-05 upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center. Construction began in September.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events CenterThe 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the

existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used by thecollege and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’sbasketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practicesand competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programswill use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer withMicrosoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988,he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development ofthree major releases of the product.
