AMERSA’s Mission
AMERSA, founded in 1976, is a multidisciplinary organization of healthcare professionals dedicated to improving education in the care of indi-viduals with substance abuse problems. AMERSA’s mission is to:
• Provide leadership and improve training for all health professionalsin the management of problems related to alcohol, tobacco andother drugs.
• Disseminate state-of-the-art scientific information aboutsubstance abuse education and research through the NationalAMERSA Conference and the organization’s journal, Substance Abuse.
• Provide mentoring for health care professionals interested inbecoming teachers, clinicians, and researchers.
• Promote cultural competence and inclusiveness among health careprofessionals in their work with individuals affected byalcohol, tobacco and other drug problems.
• Promote collaboration among multiple professions including, butnot limited to, medicine, nursing, social work, psychology,dentistry, pharmacology, public health, and allied health.
• Build a national network of substance abuse experts who canadvise local, national, and international organizations on healthprofessional substance abuse education.

Career DevelopmentJoin others for breakfast while discussing ways to develop your career. An AMERSAleader (who is also available for one-on-one mentoring) will host the conversation at yourtable. Discussions include topics on: where to look for research and educationresources, development as a clinician educator, how to meet promotion/tenure criteria,faculty development, curriculum integration, and building interdisciplinary teams,primary care research, education or service provision, academic general internal medicine,career development in and out of academia, getting your paper published.
AMERSA Task ForcesTask forces are groups that form as “hot topics” arise. Task forces meet for a periodof several months or one to two years to achieve specific goals and objectives relatedto the AMERSA mission. All meeting attendees are invited to participate in task forcemeetings. AMERSA members who wish to apply for task force status should stop bythe registration desk. AMERSA currently has one task force: Physician Education. Amajor goal of this task force has been the facilitation of required training in substanceuse disorders for all primary care residency programs.
Special Interest GroupsSpecial interest groups are an informal opportunity for attendees to have a focuseddiscussion on topics such as addiction treatment, education, research and specialpopulations. All meeting participants are invited to attend these discussions.
One -on-One MentoringThis is an opportunity for selected individuals to meet one-on-one with national leadersin the field of alcohol and other drug abuse to discuss career development. If you wouldlike to schedule time to meet with a mentor, please stop by the registration desk. A listof this year’s mentors and areas of interest is included in your registration packet.
