Head Coach: Rob Thomas (fifth year at RMU; San Diego State ’94) | Assistant Coach: Curt Russell | Student Assistant: Tyler Warden

Thomas vs. All Opponents

Rob ThomasHead Coach

Head Coach Rob Thomas will be at the helm for his fifth season as the Robert Morris University women’s volleyball team takes the court in 2007. Under the guidance of Thomas, RMU has averaged nearly 20 victories, including seven conference wins per season. Thomas is an impressive 28-4 during conference play and 79-50 overall. Last season, Robert Morris finished tied for third in the Northeast Conference with a 5-3 record. The Colonials made it to their fourth straight conference tournament championship game before falling to Long Island. Over the past four seasons, Thomas has coached the Colonials to two Northeast Conference regular-season titles, four NEC Tournament championship games, one NCAA Tournament appearance, and an NEC Tournament title in 2003. He was named NEC Coach of the Year in 2004. Thomas has coached one NEC Player of the Year, two NEC Rookies of the Year and one NEC Tournament MVP. Thomas also has coached eight All-NEC First-Team members and six All-NEC Second-Team members. In his first season at the helm, Thomas led the Colonials to a 23-12 overall record and an unblemished 8-0 finish in Northeast Conference play. Along the way, Robert Morris claimed its fifth straight NEC title and its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.

Thomas’ second and third seasons both ended with a loss to Long Island in the NEC Tournament championship game. In 2004, the Colonials finished with a 23-9 mark and an unblemished 8-0 conference record, giving Thomas his second NEC regular-season title. The 2005 season saw Thomas receive his first-ever NEC regular-season loss, giving the Colonials a 7-1 conference record and a 16-13 overall record. Thomas is no stranger to success, which is

evident with his strong coaching background as an assistant coach before coming to Robert Morris. He began his coaching career at Division III University of California-San Diego from 1996-98. While with the Tritons, he served as the top assistant women’s coach and the head men’s coach. In 1997, the Tritons women’s team was the Division III National Champions, while the 1997 men’s squad was a Division III Final Four participant. Following his time at the University of California-San Diego, Thomas spent three years as an assistant at the University of Memphis from 1998-2000, where he served as volleyball recruiting coordinator. In 1998 the Tigers were a Conference USA Tournament quarterfinalist, defeating regionally ranked University of Houston. Before heading to Robert Morris, Thomas was the top assistant coach at the University of South Alabama, where he served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and developed the outside hitters and middle blockers. In 2002, five Jaguars were named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List while two were named to the Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll. Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental social science in 1994 from San Diego State University and currently resides in Crescent, Pa.

Assistant Coaches

2007 Colonial Volleyball 5

Curt RussellEntering his first season on the bench as the Colonials’ assistant coach is Curt Russell. Russell works for the West Allegheny School District, where he is a health and physical education teacher. He has been the head volleyball coach for the middle school and high school since 2000. At the middle school level, he has won four Southwest Conference Championships, while appearing in the championship game on six occasions. At the high school level, he has coached his team to five straight WPIAL playoff appearances and three straight section titles, including a 2006 PIAA “AA” Title. He was named the WPIAL District 7 All-Star Coach. Before West Allegheny, Russell was a fitness manager and personal trainer at Bally Total Fitness and a sports instructor at Camp Woodlands Spina Bifida. Russell has a B.S. in health and physical education.

Tyler WardenEntering his first season as the women’s volleyball student assistant is Tyler Warden. He is a graduate of Norwin High School, where he was a three-year letterwinner in volleyball. With Warden’s help, his team won four section titles, recording a 24-2 overall record and a 19-1 section mark in 2005. Warden was named all-section and all-WPIAL in 2006 and 2007, while also being named to the Finest-40 All-State team in 2007. While at Norwin, Warden also played club baseball. Warden is a freshman at Robert Morris and is currently pursuing a degree in sport management.

Rebekah Bakerman • ManagerJoining the Colonial volleyball staff for a third season to help provide added assistance as a manager and statistician is Rebekah Bakerman. Bakerman joins the Colonials after a four-year career at Millersburg Area High School, along with two years of experience on the track and field team. She is a member of a winter volleyball league through Grace United Methodist Church and participates in a spring and summer beach volleyball league as well. Bakerman originally hails from Millersburg, Pa., and will be entering her junior year at Robert Morris in the fall of 2007. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

6 Robert Morris University

2007 OutlookThe 2007 version of the Robert Morris University volleyball team, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Rob Thomas, will look to regain its power a top of the Northeast Conference after falling in the NEC Tournament finals each of the last three years. The Colonials finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 17-16, with a 5-3 mark in conference play. Once again, the Colonials must deal with losing one of the best players in the program’s history with the graduation of middle blocker Janette Schneider. “It seems like every season I am talking about this,” said Thomas. “But we always find a way to move on and fill the voids.” Nine of 13 returning players are either juniors or seniors, making this team very top-heavy with a lot of experience. Also returning is one sophomore, and Thomas has added three freshmen. “There is one thing that stands out to me about having a junior- and senior-dominated lineup,” said Thomas. “I like it because it does not force me to play the underclassmen before they are ready. They can take their time and learn the game at the collegiate level.” Five seniors return for the 2007 season, including Tawnya Storino, Emily Wolthuis, Jessica Camaioni and Jennifer Stambaugh. Leading the way for the seniors is returning

captain Storino. Storino was named to the NEC All-Tournament Team and led the NEC with 10.90 assists per game; she also ranked second on the club with 268 digs and third with 34 service aces. Storino tallied 56 kills, 53 total blocks and a .252 hitting percentage. Her 1,221 assists ranks third in the RMU single-season record book, while her 2,427 career assists ranks second all-time. Joining Storino will be NEC All-Second Team honoree Wolthuis who led the team with 338 kills in 2006, ranking third in the NEC with 3.71 kills per game. She also ranked second on the team with 233 digs and fourth with 27 service aces. Camaioni returns this season after suffering some injuries last season. She still managed to tally 217 digs, ranking third on the squad, and 22 service aces, good enough for fifth on the team. Rounding out the senior class is Stambaugh. Stambaugh finished second on the team with 321 kills and sixth with 121 digs. Leading the junior class is 2006 NEC First-Team and All-Tournament Team honoree Alaina Gibson. Gibson ranked third in the conference with 3.99 digs per game. She also ranked second on the team with 41 service aces, while tallying 25 assists and one kill. Her 455 digs rank sixth on the all-time single-season list and her 41 service aces rank 10th all-time. She also ranks sixth in the career record book with 983 career digs.

Joining Gibson are fellow juniors Melissa Thompson and Cassie Lee. Thompson played in 10 games for the Colonials tallying 30 assists, five kills, one service ace and one block assist. Lee played in 91 games for the Colonials. She ranked fifth on the team with 164 kills, fourth with 26 assists and third with 58 total blocks. She also tallied four service aces and 56 digs. The lone sophomore on the squad this season will be Jessy Nelko. Nelko appeared in 32 games as a freshman last season. She recorded 47 kills, 15 digs, three assists, two block assists and one service ace. The 2007 squad will feature three freshmen, middle blocker Amanda Graham, middle blocker/opposite Addie Jennings and defensive specialist/outside hitter Corinne Moser. With the addition of some very capable freshmen and a group of core players the RMU volleyball team should be able to continue its successful tradition it has created over the last decade. This year like every other, the RMU squad will have one goal in mind, which is to win the conference tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament. “I feel that we have a very competitive non-conference schedule,” said Thomas. “This will allow us to prepare for our conference schedule the best we can.”

2007 Colonial Volleyball 19

Fairleigh Dickinson won the first three Northeast Conference titles (1987-89) before the sport took a two-year hiatus from league competition. Robert Morris claimed the 1992 and 1993 titles when volleyball returned, but Rider ended the Colonials’ dominance with its “three-peat.” Saint Francis (Pa.) won the first regular-season title in the post-Rider era with a perfect 10-0 mark in 1997, while Wagner won the tournament title. UMBC, in its first year in the NEC, capped off a perfect regular season by capturing the 1998 NEC title and earned the NEC’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. After failing to qualify for the tournament in 1998, Robert Morris captured its third NEC championship in 1999, and then went on an amazing run by winning five straight league titles before Long Island halted the streak in 2004 with its first tourney crown. The Colonials own an overall record of 83-25 against NEC foes since 1994 when the conference began to have a regular season champion, including a 62-6 mark over the last eight years. In tournament action, Robert Morris owns a record of 32-20.

Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D.President of Robert Morris University

Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. “I have followed the success of Robert Morris University from afar, but now I look forward to leading this excellent university,” said Dell’Omo upon his appointment by the Board of Trustees. “Robert Morris has a strong foundation and rich heritage. Now, it is my job to lead in a way that builds upon this history. I am thrilled to have this opportunity.” “Dr. Dell’Omo is the right person to continue the growth and academic

excellence Robert Morris University has experienced during the last 16 years,” said Joseph W. Nocito, chairman of RMU’s Board of Trustees. “He is a proven leader in academia. His background in fund raising, academics and university image building will be used to further strengthen Robert Morris University.” Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he most recently served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations, university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. Under his leadership, Saint Joseph’s was awarded $22 million in federal and state appropriations and contracts and greatly expanded its affiliate programs in China. Additionally, Dell’Omo was instrumental in directing Saint Joseph’s ongoing efforts to enhance its academic profile via a more integrated marketing communications program. Dell’Omo served as Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002, directing all academic research centers and institutes, international programs and sponsored research services. He was dean of the University’s Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school and the accounting department to accreditation by AACSB, The International Association for Management Education, and overseeing the opening of a state-of-the-art $30 million business school building. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management, moving up the faculty ranks to department chair of management and information systems (1993-1994), associate professor of management (1994-2000) and professor of management (2000-2005). Before joining SJU, he served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program. Prior to beginning his career in academia, Dell’Omo spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on various employment issues such as labor law, collective bargaining, arbitration and discrimination. Dell’Omo earned a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University. He also holds a certificate from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at many conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo has remained an active consultant to universities throughout the nation, primarily on academic and management issues. Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children: Lara, an interior designer in San Francisco; Nicholas, a junior at the University of Pittsburgh; and Vincent, a senior in high school.

Craig Coleman, M.D.Director of Athletics

Robert Morris University stayed in house to hire its latest director of athletics, naming Craig Coleman, M.D., to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Coleman, a native of Philadelphia who coaches RMU’s softball team, began his new responsibilities May 1, 2005, and enters his third academic year in 2007-08. He replaced the late Susan K. Hofacre, Ph.D, who passed away in January 2005. Under Coleman’s watch, the Department of Athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. During the 2005-06 academic year, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on ESPNTheMagazine Academic All-America District II teams, the most in

school history. He has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris athletics logo and mascot as well as the launching of the new official website for Colonial athletics at www.rmucolonials.com. Coleman also hired Mike Rice as the seventh basketball coach in RMU Division I history and the addition of field hockey head coach Olivia Netzler. All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 17 years. During that period, RMU has won three Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 to claim the regular-season championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament. “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on the field and in the classroom,” said former Robert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.” Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University. “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15 years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.” From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 17 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 408-368-4 (.526), including a record of 171-69-1 (.712) in conference play. In 2007, he garnered his 400th career victory in game one of a doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships in his first four years, and in 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom. His players include nine District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second-highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.409 grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571). Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986-91. He guided the Patriots of the Amateur Softball Association to three national tournaments in his final four years at the helm.

26 Robert Morris University

RMU AthleticsRobert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 23 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 25 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including eight regular-season titles in volleyball, five regular-season championships in football, five NEC Tournament titles in softball and three NEC Tournament championships in men’s soccer. The 2006-07 athletic season could arguably go down as one of the greatest in RMU’s Division I history, as a number of team and individual accomplishments highlight the year. The Colonial women’s basketball team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in Division I history by claiming its third NEC Tournament championship with a 68-66 victory over Sacred Heart. The win garnered the program its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, where the Colonials fell to N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. The turnaround came just three years after finishing with just three wins during the 2003-04 campaign. The Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team pulled off the biggest upset in school history by garnering a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. The men’s basketball team, meanwhile, got off to its best start in school history with a 4-0 mark en route to its second straight winning season. Individually, senior Stephanie Kuhn of the RMU women’s outdoor track and field team qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Kuhn, the only student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in track and field, turned the trick twice in her four years on the team, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Off the field, a total of six student-athletes were named to their respective ESPNTheMagazine Academic All-District II Teams, while senior Ray Gensler of the football team was named an Academic All-American for the second straight year, the first student-athlete in school history to earn Academic All-America honors twice. The 2006-07 athletics campaign followed a 2005-06 season in which the men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, to claim its third NEC Tournament title and first since 1994. The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record. During the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournament for its fifth tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history. The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed the seasons before it, as the Colonial football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA Mid-Major National Championship according to DonHansen’sNationalFootballWeeklyGazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s crew team claimed two straight national

championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 15 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball and volleyball have made an NEC record five appearances, with men’s basketball qualifying in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1992 and volleyball in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. He currently is the starting center for the Cleveland Browns. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Said Ali (2004) and Jamie Dodds (2004) signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Pro Soccer League and the Toronto Lynx of the A-League, respectively, in 2004. Following Ali and Jamie Dodds in 2005 was Joe Di Buono (2005), who was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL coach in Dan Radakovich, who spent 18 years as an NFL assistant and is currently RMU’s assistant head coach. Joining the football coaching staff in the summer of 2003 was John Banaszak, who became the third member of the staff with a background in the NFL. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.
