Presidents Report March 2008

Welcome Members.

You may remember in last month’s report I wrote of a possible new D.E.C. project. Reg, Jim and myself took a drive to a Midwest property to survey the shearer’s quarters with a view to repair and restoration to working order. Upon return when Reg submitted his report he was told the project was not going ahead, some mix up in admin somewhere along the chain of command. So we have applied to continue at Lochada, care and maintenance, fence removal and probably more track surveying and naming.

Please come along to Lochada at Easter, the committee has made an exemption for non Subaru vehicles on this occasion so you may bring your oddball 4x4 if you wish, they come in handy to push over the old fencing with plenty of room inside to stack the dirty, rotten fence posts for the campfire!

Check out the Trips and Socials in the calendar there are some excellent ones coming up, a partial result of a long committee meeting, our first for this year.

Great to see visitors and new members at the last GM, we hope you found it friendly and informative and look forward to a long association.

Your President,

Simon Newton.

From the Editor:

Could you please get articles in by the 15th of March for the next mag. as I am off for 6 weeks at Easter and want to do the April Mag before I leave. And a volunteer to do the May mag please.

Thanking you. Jim

TRIP PROMOTIONS/INFORMATION

Trip Coordinators Report March 2008

February had a couple of social events (the tour of Leighton Bat-tery and snorkelling at Mettam's pool) and the only day trip we had was the beach picnic at Wilbinga which was led by Martin. This turned out to be an enjoyable evening sitting on the beach watch-ing the sun set and then the challenge of heading back in the dark.

The long weekend trip on March 1st to 3rd is to Hill River which is just north of Cervantes, which will also be an ideal trip for new members or visitors.

The Easter trip March 21st to 24th to Lochada this year will not be limited to a set number of vehicles, and has proved very popular in the past and this trip is proving to be the same. Even with the maintenance work planned it will still leave plenty of time to enjoy the area.

April only has the one trip to Hidden Breakaway on the ANZAC day long weekend because of Easter being at the end of March, and though the club hasn’t visited them recently it has been a popular destination previously.

The dates are firming up for the trip to the Pilbara visiting Karijini and Millstream to occur after the Pierre Repairre trip which is dur-ing the first week of the July school holidays. This will give people the option of doing both trips if they want to. It is anticipated that everyone will meet up at Newman on July 16th and then arrive in Karijini towards the end of the school holidays (hopefully when every one else is heading back to Perth) and return to Perth around the 27th. More details as they come to hand.

See you out there David Peck

I have booked for 20 and seats will be allocated on the social sheet on a first come first served basis. If we exceed these numbers I will try and book extras, time permitting. Please contact me to get your name on the list.

ANZAC LWE TRIP TO THE (NOT SO HIDDEN ANY-MORE) BREAKAWAYS

This trip will depart on Friday 25 April (Anzac Day) and return on Sun-day 27 April. “The Breakaways” camp is on the Hyden-Norseman Road approximately 135kms east of Hyden, which is 339 kms from Perth via Kondinin, Corrigin and Brookton.

According to Ian Johnson’s spreadsheet listing 25 years of Club trips, the Club has visited this camp 6 times, with the first trip made in March 1986. At those times, the Club knew this destination as “Hidden Breakaway”, as it was not all that well known and there were no “improvements” whatsoever.

However, these days, the camp is clearly “on the map” and is a stop-ping spot on the popular Granite and Woodlands Discovery Trail [which we should probably do as a future trip, when we have more time]. The following is an extract from an itinerary from this trip - “On the drive to the next stop [from Hyden], you will start to leave the sandplain landscape and enter the Woodlands. The Breakaways, is great spot for a picnic. It has picnic facilities, toilets and camping facili-ties if you want to do this itinerary in two days. Our CEO has camped there a couple of times and always enjoyed the rocks and scenery on show there.”

Page 9: 2008-03

Page 9

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

In fact, when I googled “The Breakaways”, this is what came up:

National Public Toilet Map - The Breakaways

Well, there you go, the camping spot now has its claim to fame! So, it’s time for the Club to visit again! I’m not sure yet exactly what we will do on the Sunday, but a loop south around past Lake Johnson is my pref-erence, if there is some interest. Otherwise, we could do part of the Holland Track.

Meet at: To be confirmed – probably the Coventrys car park, Albany Highway.

Time: 8.15 for 8.30am start.

Bring: A full tank of petrol and all the other usuals for a LWE camping trip with no facilities (except toilet!). You will also need one 20 litre jerry can of fuel.

———————————————————————————————-

Gnangara Pines 11th May

This will be a leisurely drive along the sand tracks amongst the pine

trees.

Meet at: 218 Lakelands Drive, Gnangara (corner of Sydney Road)

Time: 9.15 for a 9.30am start

Bring: Food, water, tyre pump and gauge.

Please get your name down on the trip sheet or contact trip co-ordinator Jim Wilcox 93068222 or E-mail

Pierre Repairre and / or Karijini NP: July holidays:

Part one is a joint expedition with the Geraldton 4WD Club to Well 6 (Pierre Spring) on the Canning Stock Route (CSR).

The Geraldton Club and other enthusiasts, under the leadership of Ian Stock-bridge are going back to repair the top of the well. In 1991 they did major repairs to the whole well and some Subarus assisted (including members Me, Tony Richards & family, and Ray Stewart).

Here is an exciting opportunity to help in the preservation of a valuable water supply in an idyllic spot. Plenty of opportunity to work, walk, sit and cogitate, scramble or drive around.

Access to CSR via Granite Peak station. There are several CSR exit routes - one via the Carnarvon Ranges, Neds Creek stn to G.N. Highway and home, OR to the wonders of the Pilbara & Karijini NP.

It’s camping all the way, and as the Well 6 section is classed as an ‘expedition’ some vehicle assessment is required. Planning on itinerary, routes, fuel, spares, tyres, tools, well equipment, etc has started.

Trailers or trailer-campers perhaps are subject to discussion.

Part two is Plus Karijini. This trip can be joined on its own as you will be travel-ling on highway and roads to the vast Pilbara and the vast red rocks secret val-leys and cool pools. Beautiful scenery, spinifex and rugged vistas. Arrival is timed to be close to the end of the school holidays.

Or be concatenated with the Well 6 section - both for the price of one!

# You are invited to apply to join the trip/s, and may do so with your Subaru (subject to acceptance) or other make of 4WD.

# Your vehicle, and club trip driving experience will form part of a basic accep-tance assessment.

These are two excellent trips so have a look at your maps/calendar/diary now and apply for a place asap.

Cheers, Ian Johnson & David Peck.

For further details on the joint trip, please contact Ian Johnson.

Desert Sands.

Dullsville to Birdsville!

Planning is underway for a crossing of The Simpson Desert next year, a 30 day trip starting May next year. The plan is as follows.

Perth to Laverton, Anne Beadell Hwy to Coober Pedy, Dalhousie Springs, NT across the Simpson to Birdsville. Birdsville Track to Marree, SA then through the magnificent Flinders Ranges to Port Augusta and home across the Nullabor.

A minimum of 6 club trips required including 2 trips of 3 days or more and experience in on the move bush camping ( caravan park camping does-n’t count ) and the ability to get along with people 24 hours a day for 30 days.

A good sense of humor and adventure essential. Organize your holidays or long service leave now and acquire the necessary experience if you don’t have it already.

Register your interest.

Contact trip leader Simon Newton. 94505953 or the Presidents Email.

I have crossed the Simpson in my Liberty from both directions a few years back with an ‘L’ model and Brumby and it is quite achievable. Vehi-cles will do it much easier if lifted. I would class the dunes as worse than the Canning Stock route, and you probably have twice as many but you only have half the distance. Expect the track to have deep ruts and mo-guls near the tops of the dunes from previous large vehicles digging in.

Although called a desert the area is well vegetated and there are plenty of flat camping spots between the dunes. Beware of the dingoes and don’t leave anything lying around at night or they will run off with it. They seemed particularly partial to footwear and garbage bags. (probably be-cause they were the main items left outside of the tent)

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

SUNSET OVER THE OCEAN DRIVE 9th FEBRUARY 2008

The 10th Light Horse Heritage Trail on Wanneroo Rd was the meeting place for a convoy of nine assorted Subarus, led by Martin Southwood accompanied by his son Dale. We shared the carpark with a truck driver and mechanic working on a Kenworth. We also shared it with a snake seen by Dale!

Our first adventure was negotiating a sand hill, which was actually two hills so caught a few drivers out when they backed off the accelerator before reaching the second rise. This was a learning experience for our visitors in two turbo Foresters. A lesson learned

by our Trip Coordinator was to close windows when spinning wheels in sand!

What seemed like an age on a labyrinth of tracks Martin assured us he knew exactly where we were, after all he had done a ‘reccy’ the week-end before. All the cars handled

the sandy tracks well and no damage was suffered from the sharp ex-posed rocks in places that were often difficult to negotiate.

Our beach destination had to be changed as this is obviously a very popular area for 4WDs and we kept coming upon campsites. On reaching the beach we found the tide

out so some of the big kids did some ‘circle work’ on the sand (we have neglected to mention that there were more wives than is usual present). We parked behind the sand dunes for some shelter but de-cided the beach wasn’t unpleasant so deck chairs, tables and eskies came out on the water’s edge. The very young ones, Taleah and Nicholas, and young ones Veronica and Amos and some not so young braved the water and built sandcastles.

After relaxing for quite some time, we watched a beautiful sunset at 8.13 before packing up and heading inland for the night time journey home. Only one steep downhill section was encountered, handled well by all. Wendy pointed out the constellation Pleiades (which also hap-

pens to be their number plate) in a bright starlit sky.

It was almost 10pm by the time we stopped to inflate tyres and say our farewells and there were still 4WDs heading into the area. This outing obviously appealed to families as there were 22 people, in only nine cars. Thanks to Martin and Dale for remembering all the landmarks and leading a great trip.
