BIG 12 CONFERENCE

The Big 12 Conference has established a consistent level of nationalsuccess on the field and in the classroom as it enters its 13th season in 2008-09.

Since it began play in 1996-97, the Conference can boast 31 team crownsand over 385 individual NCAA Championships. The success continuedduring 2007-08 as Kansas captured the Big 12's first national title in men'sbasketball, while the league added 31 individual crowns.

Over the past four seasons a total of 12 NCAA trophies have been hoistedby Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one yearfor the Conference, including each of the past 11 seasons.

The Big 12 leads all conferences with five appearances in BowlChampionship Series title games. League squads have played for the footballnational championship five times in the last nine years with berths in 14 BCSgames overall, including two in 2007. The Big 12 led all conferences with fourteams ranked in the Top 10 in the final national polls a season ago. Inaddition, an all-time high eight league players earned consensus All-Americarecognition in 2007, more than any other conference.

In basketball, nine men's and women's teams have advanced to theirrespective Final Fours in the past seven seasons as the Big 12 continues itsplace among the elite intercollegiate athletic conferences. The six men'sFinal Four participants since 2002 is more than any conference. Numerousnational honors have been won by basketball student-athletes during theleague's history, with Michael Beasley (Kansas State), D.J. Augustin (Texas)and Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) the most recent to garner accolades asconsensus All-America in 2007-08.

The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitiveenvironment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whetheron the field, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes,administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highestideals in sportsmanship.

Big 12 student-athletes also do well in garnering national academicrecognition. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) was named Academic All-America ofthe Year in volleyball the past two seasons by ESPN The Magazine andCollege Sports Information Directors of America with a 4.0 grade-pointaverage in Biochemistry. She also won the national academic honorpresented for all sports in 2006-07 and was named recipient of theprestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete ofthe Year. She is the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn theaccolade. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Augustin was anAcademic All-America First Team choice. In its history, the conference canboast of over 300 academic honorees, averaging more than 25 each season.

The Big 12 can boast of other stories that combine on and off the fieldsuccess. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the HondaInspiration Award in 2008, given to an outstanding female college athletewho overcomes adversity to excel in her sport. She was diagnosed with acancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-America honors at the2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equalcomponents of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respectiveseasons.

At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male andfemale student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12Sportsperson of the Year awards.

Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr.Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year.A total of 201 scholars have received over $1.2 million in postgraduatefinancial aid through the first 12 years of the program.

The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men's squads include baseball, basketball,cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field,swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women's teams are fielded inbasketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track& field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

The conference is made up of 12 institutions that have shared manytraditional rivalries throughout their histories. Member schools include -Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska,Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 45million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets withinits geographic footprint.

The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Eachchampionship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that willrepresent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner ofthe Big 12 football championship game earns the league's berth into theprestigious Bowl Championship Series.

In the last several years the Big 12 has increased its bowl agreements andexpanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts withABC/ESPN, FSN and CBS College Sports. Most recently, the league renewedand expanded its multi-year arrangement with ABC/ESPN, Inc. The newcontract begins in 2008-09.

In its first 12 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1 billion toits 12 member institutions.

The Big 12 staff administers to over 4,600 student-athletes in 21 sports.

With a population of 215,000, the Wacometropolitan area is located in the heart ofCentral Texas and within driving distance of

most major urban centers in the state -approximately 100 miles from Dallas/Fort

Worth and Austin and 180 miles fromHouston and San Antonio.

Waco is named after the Waco Indians, thefirst inhabitants of the area surrounding anatural spring on the Brazos River. The tribelived in beehive-shaped huts and hadhundreds of acres of land planted with corn,beans and other vegetables. The tribe wasgenerally considered a peaceful one, butoccasionally, when threatened, the Wacosbecame protective of their territory. Part oftheir village was located on the banks of theBrazos where the Suspension Bridge was laterbuilt.

In 1837, the Texas Rangers arrived intendingto build a fort — Fort Fisher — at the Wacovillage, but the expedition was short-lived andplans for the outpost were canceled. A tradingpost was established near Waco Village in1844, and a year later a rugged Scot namedNeil McLennan established the first frontiersettlement in the area. In 1848, three yearsafter Texas became a state, the Mexican landgrant surrounding the old Waco Village sitewas sold to a group of businessmen fromGalveston. In 1849, surveyor George Erath laidout the first streets of Waco, and lots were soldfor $5 each. The City of Waco was incorporatedon Aug. 29, 1856, and serves as the county seatof McLennan County.

In 1870, the 475-foot Suspension Bridgeopened as the first pedestrian/wagon bridgeacross the Brazos River, providing easier accessfor numerous travelers as well as cattle herdsbeing driven along the Chisholm Trail. TheWaco and Northwestern Railroad reachedWaco in 1871, and the city was soon a hub ofcommerce for Central Texas.

The Dr Pepper Museum and Free EnterpriseInstitute was opened in 1991 and is located indowntown Waco. The museum stands threeshort blocks from the original site ofMorrison's Old Corner Drug Store, where Dr.Charles Alderton first created Dr Pepper in1885.

The 2008 season marks Baylor’s 59th year offootball at the 50,000-seat Floyd Casey Stadium.Originally named Baylor Stadium, the structure wasbuilt in 1950 after a bond sales program raised $1.5million for construction costs. The stadium openedwith a 34-7 Baylor victory over Houston.

The 2008 season marks the 10th year for the Baylorsoccer team at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field. Dr. David E. Garland assumed the role of Baylor's interim president Aug.20, 2008.

Garland is dean of Baylor's George W. Truett Theological Seminary, aposition he has held since June 1, 2007. He joined the seminary faculty in1997 as professor of Christian scriptures. He was appointed Truett'sassociate dean for academic affairs in 2001, and was named The William M.Hinson Professor of Christian Scriptures in 2005. Garland will serve until apermanent president is named. He also will continue in his role as dean ofthe seminary.

The appointment comes after consultations with various universitygroups that focused on the characteristics desired in the individualselected and possible candidates to fill the position of interim president.

Before joining the Truett Seminary faculty in 1997, David Garland servedas The Ernest and Mildred Hogan Professor of New Testament and chair ofthe Biblical Division at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wherehe taught for 21 years.

A magna cum laude graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and U.S.Navy veteran, Garland received his master of divinity and doctoral degreesfrom Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and also completedpostgraduate work at Eberhardt-Karls Universität in Tübingen, Germany,and Macquarrie University in Sydney, Australia. He is an elected member ofthe prestigious Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas.

Garland is the author of 13 books (including commentaries on Matthew,Mark, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Philippians, and Colossians andPhilemon) and more than 50 academic journal articles. His most recentcommentary on 1 Corinthians was given an Award of Merit by ChristianityToday and was a finalist for the Gold Medallion presented by the ChristianBooksellers Association. Two of his other books were awarded a Silver andGold Medallion respectively. He has also edited four books and currently isthe New Testament editor for the revision of the Expositor's BibleCommentary.

Garland and his wife, Diana, dean of Baylor's School of Social Work,published Flawed Families of the Bible: How God's Grace Works throughImperfect Relationships, which was recently translated into Korean.Garland also is working on a commentary on the Gospel of Luke for theZondervan Exegetical Commentary series for which he is a consultingeditor.

In addition to his research, teaching and administrative duties, Garlanddirected both of Truett Seminary's self-studies for accreditation by theAssociation of Theological Schools, from 2000 to 2002 and from 2005 to2007.

Professor Michael Rogers has served as Baylor’s Faculty Representativeto the Big 12 Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Associationsince 2002 and has been a member of the Baylor Law faculty since 1984.

Rogers earned a bachelor of business administration degree andgraduated with honors in 1972 from Texas Tech University, where he was amember of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies anda varsity scholarship basketball player. He received his J.D. degree from theUniversity of Oklahoma in 1974, where he was an editor of the OklahomaLaw Review and was admitted to membership in the Order of the Coif.

Rogers was in private practice from 1975 to 1984, during which time hewas a founding partner of Gaar & Bell (now Gilmore & Bell), a securitiestransactions law firm with offices in Kansas and Missouri. He is admitted topractice law in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas.

During his private practice work, Rogers served as lead counsel indozens of private securities transactions and over 100 public offerings oftax-advantaged securities. While teaching Securities Regulation at Baylor,he has served as consulting counsel in numerous securities lawsuits.

In 1984 he joined the Baylor Law faculty, where his subjects includefamily law, securities regulation and alternative dispute resolution. Rogersis an experienced mediator and serves on the panel of mediators for theUnited States District Court Western District of Texas. He continues to serveas a director (Board Chairman, 2000-2001) of the McLennan CountyDispute Resolution Center and on the panel of mediators for the UnitedStates District Court, Western District of Texas. Rogers formerly served onthe panel of arbitrators for the American Arbitration Association.

For more than a decade, Professor Rogers has served as chair of Baylor’sProfessional Sports Counseling Panel. In that capacity, he has renderedadvice to numerous future professional athletes, including Olympic goldmedalist Michael Johnson and Super Bowl champion Santana Dotson.

Rogers is the son of the late Bob J. Rogers, who served as headbasketball coach at Texas A&M University from 1957 to 1963.

Ian McCaw was named Director of Athletics of Baylor's 18-sport, Big 12intercollegiate athletics program Sept. 8, 2003. Under McCaw's leadership,the department has achieved unprecedented academic, athletics andadministrative success.

Since 2003, Baylor has enjoyed its most competitively successful periodin the history of its intercollegiate athletics program. During that time,Baylor has captured two NCAA national team championships, 20 Big 12conference championships and recorded its three highest finishes in theNACDA Directors' Cup standings.

Baylor achieved three Top 40 finishes in the NACDA Director's Cupincluding its highest finish ever in 2004-05 with a 25th-place ranking. Aschool-record 13 teams advanced to post-season competition in both2005-06 and 2006-07.

Baylor has also excelled in conference competition consistently finishingin the top half of the Big 12 all-sports standings.

Student-athletes have thrived in the classroom as Baylor led the Big 12in graduation success rate at 88 percent and four-class graduation rate at64 percent in 2006-07.

While Baylor Athletics enjoyed extraordinary academic and athleticsuccess, the department has made dramatic strides administratively aswell.

A five-year strategic plan for intercollegiate athletics, Above andBeyond, was developed and implemented inclusive of department goalsand objectives. An outgrowth of this plan was the creation of the five-year,$90 million development campaign Victory with Integrity which wasinitiated in February 2005.

Improved athletic development success has followed leading to thefunding and completion of the Grant Teaff and Letterwinners Plazas; the Lt.Jack Whetsel Jr. Basketball Practice Facility; and, the Willis FamilyEquestrian Center. The $34 million Highers Athletics Complex and SimpsonAthletics and Academic Center will be completed in the fall of 2008. SinceMcCaw's arrival, the athletic endowment has grown from $14 to more than$24 million. In each of the last four years, the Baylor Bear Foundation hasposted a new record for annual funds raised highlighted by its best yearever in 2007-08.

Baylor successfully completed the NCAA certification process beingcited as one of only two institutions in the certification program's historyto have no issues raised in its self-study. An expanded compliance staff,improved financial services area and enhanced Student-AthleteServices/Life Skills unit are among the most significant internalimprovements.

Record revenues in ticket sales, corporate sponsorship, television,licensing and expanded media exposure underscore the growth inexternal support for Baylor Athletics.

McCaw is Baylor's 12th athletic director and arrived from the Universityof Massachusetts, where he spent the previous year as director of athletics.McCaw was responsible for a 23-sport program and helped develop andimplement a five-year strategic plan for UMass athletics.

McCaw oversaw a $2 million renovation of the men's and women'sbasketball and ice hockey locker room facilities at Massachusetts. InMcCaw's one season in Amherst, UMass captured three Atlantic 10. TheNCAA graduation rate for UMass student-athletes was 71 percent, 12points higher than that of the school's general student population.

McCaw previously served as director of intercollegiate athletics andcampus recreation at Northeastern University from 1997-2002. During his

five years at Northeastern, where he implemented a five-year strategicplan for Northeastern athletics inclusive of department goals andobjectives.

Northeastern graduated 65 percent of its student-athletes duringMcCaw's final year at the Boston institution, 14 points higher than theinstitutional average. Husky student-athletes also gave back to thecommunity, as each team was required to participate in at least onecommunity service project annually. The success of the Northeasternathletic program on McCaw's watch extended beyond the classroom, asthe program captured a school-record six America East conference titlesin 2001-2002, and five teams finished among the nation's top 20. In all,nine different programs captured at least one conference title duringMcCaw's tenure and five earned at least one NCAA bid.

A $4 million renovation of Northeastern's Cabot Center, whichincluded a refurbishment of the main gymnasium, an expanded speed,strength and conditioning center, a new sports medicine center,expanded and renovated locker rooms, was also completed underMcCaw's direction.

McCaw went to Northeastern from Tulane University, where heserved as senior associate athletic director for development andassociate athletic director for external affairs from 1992-1997, beingnamed Tulane's co-interim director of athletics in 1996. Prior to his yearsat Tulane, McCaw worked in a variety of athletic administrative posts atthe University of Maine from 1986 to 1992 including sports information,marketing and external affairs.

Recognized as a national leader in intercollegiate athletics, McCawserves on the NCAA Recruiting Cabinet. He is the chair of the Big 12championship and awards committee; a member of the television,game management and officiating committees. He also serves on theNational Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics ExecutiveCommittee and the NCAA’s Recruiting Cabinet.

McCaw earned his master's degree in sport management fromMassachusetts in 1987, after receiving a bachelor's degree in sportsadministration at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, in 1985.McCaw and his wife, Heather, are members of First Baptist Church ofWoodway where he serves as a deacon. They are the parents of fourchildren: Christy, Paul, Callie and Corinne. McCaw is a member of theBoard of Directors of Live Oak Classical School in Waco.

The Department of Student-Athlete Services hasthe overall responsibility for the academic welfareof approximately 400 student-athletes every year.

Our ultimate measure of success is to graduateeach student-athlete and prepare them for theirtransition into the professional world.

In the 12 years of the Big 12, Baylor has led theconference five years in student-athlete graduationrates and was second three years. Ninety-sevenstudent-athletes earned their degree from Baylorduring the 2007-08 academic year.

Since the start of the Big 12 Conference in 1996,982 student-athletes have graduated, beginning

with only 12 in 1996-97 to a record of 106 student-athletes in 2002-03.

This season looks to be a promising one as the Lady Bears hopeto capitalize on their fall success and compete for a Big 12Championship this spring.

All-American HopefulJunior Hannah Burke had a tremendous fall and is trying to

become Baylor's first All-American in program history. TheHertfordshire, England, native has continued her outstandingcareer at Baylor. She has consistently led the team in scoring overher years at Baylor. Her best in the fall came at the MountainviewCollegiate, where she carded a final round 73. Her fall scoringaverage of 78.52 led the team. Head coach Sylvia Ferdon hopesBurke can become Baylor’s first All-America selection.

New Face In TownLast fall, the Lady Bears hired Jordan Cox as its assistant coach

and his impact has already shown immediately. A great coach andrecruiter, he has helped bring in Chelsey Cothran, a freshman fromArkansas, who graduated early and should help the Lady Bearsimmediately this spring. Cox was an '86 Baylor graduate, andcomes to Waco from Shiloh Christian School in Arkansas.

"He has taught and coached young people having been a youthsports minister over the last seven years and he has been a highschool coach. He has two daughters of his own and brings theskills needed for teaching young women,” Ferdon said. “He did afantastic job grooming Chelsey Cothran to the national level injunior golf. He also has a background in radio and television, so heis very verbal, loves music, and I think young people like that. Hehas a great sense of humor. He has made practice and travelingeven more fun."

Young GunsThe Bears will return everyone next year, with the exception of

Natalie Hocott. The lone senior on the team has been a constantthroughout her years at Baylor. The future looks bright for the LadyBears, as they will have only one senior next year as well.Sophomores are really the heart of the team as Lene Hafsten-Morch, Morgan Chambers, and transfer Jordan Rhodes look toprovide young talent for BU season. Freshman Jaclyn Jansen andChelsey Cothran will give the team a tremendous boost this yearas well.

From The Coaches Mouth"I want to be competing for the Big 12 Championship. We have

had a couple of top three finishes and you get a taste of what ittakes to carry home that trophy. It was exciting to see our teamplay so well this fall at the host site, the Rawls Golf Course, at TexasTech. Our second place finish really fired our team up.

I also want our program consistently at the top national level.We've enjoyed a stretch of eight straight regional appearancesand a trip to nationals in the middle of that time period, 2004. Ourweakness at regionals seemed to be distance, notcompetitiveness. So, the last two years, I have consciously tried torecruit players with the athletic ability to move the ball out therein any kind of weather condition

I look forward to coaching this still very young group of players.They have the talent top to bottom to put us on that national level.Our practice sessions have been very focused and purposeful. Ourspring schedule is very competitive. Everyone just needs to havethe same vision. We need to imagine being successful and thenworking hard to make it happen. It is an exciting time to be aBaylor Bear."

The 2008-09 season marks the 15th season in which Baylor's women's golf program

has been under the remarkable leadership of head coach Sylvia Ferdon. Ferdon, who has

guided the Bears into the Big 12 Conference's upper echelon, has made Baylor a regular in

the NCAA postseason, leading the Bears to eight straight regional appearances and the

program's first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2004. In the past six seasons, the Baylor

women's golf team has finished in the top five in 37 of 63 tournaments, including 12 team

titles.

BUILDING A WINNING TRADITION AT BAYLOR

In 2007-08, Ferdon guided Hannah Burke to her second top-10 finish at the Big 12

Championships. Burke became only the third Lady Bear in the program’s history to achieve

that accomplishment.

The 2006-07 season marked the eighth consecutive time that the Baylor women’s golf

made an appearance in an NCAA Regional. The Lady bears finished the 2006-07 campaign

with seven top five finishes, including its best ever showing in the Big 12 Championship

with a third place showing. The Lady Bears set a record low spring team-per-day scoring

average of 299.95.

The Bears started off the 2005-06 season with a team victory at the Ptarmigan/Ram

Classic. Senior Josefin Svenningsson and sophomore Sian Reddick shared the individual

title, each tying Svenningsson's school-record 54-hole total of 210. Reddick also broke

Svenningsson's 18-hole record with a 67 in the second round. In the spring coach Ferdon

guided her team to another victory at the Central District Invitational where the team shot

302, 298 and 296 for a total of 896. The Bears picked up a total of five top 10 finishes

including placing sixth at the Big 12 tournament, a finish earned in great part by Anna

Rehnholm's individual third-place finish. And for the seventh straight year, Baylor

qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament. The Bears wrapped up the season finishing

14th in the central region.

The 2004-05 season started with two fall team titles at the Aztec Fall Invitational and

the Ross Resorts Invitational. Reddick had an immediate impact for the Bears, leading the

team in stroke average, recording three top 10 finishes and setting the Baylor freshman

scoring record. The team tied the best showing in program history by finishing third at the

Big 12 Championship and held the lead through two rounds at the NCAA Central Regional

before missing a second straight NCAA Championship appearance by eight strokes.

In 2003-04, Svenningsson earned All-Big 12 and All-Central Regional honors, finished

in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships, destroyed the Baylor 54-hole record and tied the

then-single-round record twice. The team also had its most successful year to date, tying

for 19th in its first-ever NCAA Championship appearance. Meredith Jones, who received

Big 12 All-Tournament honors, and Anna Rehnholm, who set several Baylor freshman

records, had breakout seasons to help the Bears during their run to the NCAA

Championships.

In 2002-2003, Ferdon's Bears had a school-record four wins and were ranked 29th

nationally. Seniors Melanie Hagewood and Hanna-Sofia Svenningsson left a legacy at

Baylor as the only players to appear in a regional all four years they were at Baylor.

Hagewood was an All-Big 12 performer, a four-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, a

Verizon Academic All-American and the 2001 LPGA Dinah Shore Award winner.

Svenningsson was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and improved her scoring

average each season.

The Baylor women's golf program began to earn national recognition in 1999-2000,

when the Bears posted their first team victory in six seasons and earned the school's first

NCAA Regional bid. Ferdon was honored as the 2000 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year

following the season. Baylor posted a then-best seventh-place finish at the Big 12

Championships, and placed 18th in the 24-team NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz.

Ferdon's previous coaching experiences includes stints as head coach at Florida State in

1974-75, and as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Florida in 1973-1974.

Under Ferdon, Baylor has produced five All-Big 12 players, who have combined for

eight awards. Ali Brewer was a second-team selection in 1999 and 2000, Melanie

Hagewood in spring of 2001 and 2003 and Josefin Svenningsson in 2004. Hannah Burke

and Allison Martin earned All-Big 12 honors in 2007, whith Burke claiming the accolade

again in 2008.

Ferdon could be called a "players coach" because she knows first hand how to handle

the pressure of competition. In 1992, Ferdon earned her way into the LPGA Championship

by winning the LPGA Central Section Championship. Previously, Ferdon had spent five

years on the LPGA Tour. Following the LPGA Tour, Ferdon claimed a victory at the LaGrange

Classic on the WPGT mini-tour. She was also a member of the European WPGA tour.

PERSONAL

Ferdon is not only a gifted player, but a fine teacher as well. She has been a Class A

member with the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division since 1990. From 1986 to

1995, Ferdon taught golf at Baylor and polished her ability to work with student-athletes.

Ferdon is a 1968 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a member of the

school's athletic hall of fame. Ferdon received her Master's in Education from Tarleton State

University.

Coach Ferdon is married to Dr. Douglas Ferdon, Associate Professor and former

Chairman of the Department of Journalism at Baylor University. They have been married

since Aug. 21, 1971.

COACHING STAFF

Jordan Cox begins his first season as assistant coach with the Baylor women's golf

program.

Cox, a 1986 Baylor graduate, returns to Waco from Shiloh Christian School in Arkansas.

In two seasons at Shiloh, Cox helped lead the Saints to two regional titles and one

conference championship. The Saints placed third in the 2008 Arkansas Class 3A State

Championships and fourth in 2006.

The Waco native has worked in a variety of professional positions over the past 25 years

including serving as sports pastor at several large Baptist Churches in Texas and Arkansas

during the last decade and also as the Vice President of Marketing-Communications for

Upward Unlimited, a non-profit sports ministry organization. Cox is also a certified

instructor for the HOT Golf Academy in Texas.

Cox was the voice of the Lady Bears during the early and mid `90's. As an award-

winning television sports anchor, Cox worked for many years at KWTX, the CBS affiliate in

Waco.

He earned his degree from Baylor in radio, television and film. Cox and his wife, the

former Kristy Berryhill, have two children: Jordan Lee, 14, and Ryley, 10.

of her team at the tournament and her third round 73 has been her best so far as a Bear... Tied for

2007-08 IN REVIEW

Baylor’s 2007-08 golf season was one full of ups and downs for the Lady Bears.

Coming off one of its successful years in the program history, the season looked bright for a

Baylor squad that was anchored by three seniors.

The 2007 fall edition of Golf Digest magazine ranked Baylor as No. 22 on the list of the best

programs to develop as a collegiate player. Academics, climate, facilities/coaches and player

growth/improvement were part of the criteria used in the rankings. Only two other Big 12

schools ranked higher.

The Lady Bears started the 2007 fall season out strong finishing amongs the top five

schools on two separate occasions, but injuries plagued a spring season which saw the Baylor

squad take home 12th place at the 2008 Big 12 Championships.

The season began with back-to-back tournaments in Colorado where Baylor earned a

10th-place finish at the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic and then followed that up with its best

finish of the year; a second-place showing at the Ron Moore Invitational at Highlands Ranch

Golf Club in Littleton, Colo.

In an 18-team field at the Ron Moore Invite, the Lady Bears finished ahead of all six Big 12

participants. Sophomore Hannah Burke carded a season-low 54-hole total of 215 to take

home runner-up honors. Sian Reddick was the other Lady Bear to finish among that top 15,

placing 14th overall with a 223 (72-78-73).

Burke would go on to tally three more top-10 finishes to put her career total at eight after

the conclusion on the 2007-08 season.

One of those top-10 finishes came at the Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Okla. The

sophomore from Hertfordshire, England, carded a three-day 237 to become only the third

Lady Bear in school history to be named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team in back-to-back

seasons. No Baylor golfer has ever done it three years in a row.

Burke, who held the top ranking in the English women's poll for most of the 2007-08

season, was honored as the team MVP with her team-best 76.47 stroke average over 32 holes

on play.

Last season also saw the addition of two highly-touted freshmen make their debut for the

Lady Bears. Lene Hafsten-Morch and Morgan Chambers combined to participate in 61 of

Baylor's 64 rounds during the 2007-08 season. Hafsten-Morch was the only Lady Bear, aside

from Burke, to post a stroke average in the 70's. The freshman from Billingstad, Norway,

finished with an average of 79.83 over 29 rounds of play.

Chambers ranked fourth on the squad with a stroke average of 80.44, participating in

every round of every tournament during her first season as a Lady Bear. Chambers' best finish

came at the Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. as she carded a three-round total of

222 (74-76-72) to finish tied for 10th overall.

For the eighth consecutive season, Baylor had at least one student-athlete earn Academic

Scholar-Athlete honors from the National Golf Coaches Association. Chambers and sophomore

Kristen Hendrix earned the honor for the Lady Bears during the 2007-08 campaign.

The 2007-08 season saw the exit of Reddick, Meg McDaniel and Stephanie Waters, who

were all competing in their senior season.

In 2000, for the first time in Baylor women’s golf history, the team advanced to the NCAA Regional

Tournament. At the West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., Big 12 Coach of the Year Sylvia Ferdon led the Bears

to an 18th-place finish. All five Bears placed in the top 100, led by Melanie Hagewood, who shot a

three-round score of 226 (78-72-76) and tied for 38th, followed by Tara Bateman, who shot a 230 (77-

79-74) and placed 65th. All-Big 12 selection Ali Brewer finished with a 232 (78-79-75) placing her at

81st; Nicole Johnson carded a 233 (79-78-76) taking the No. 85 spot. Finishing it off for the Bears was

Hanna-Sofia Svenningsson who shot a 236 (76-79-81) placing her at 99th.

Baylor's women's golf team finished 10th out of 21 teams at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional

hosted by Michigan State. It was the third consecutive regional appearance for the Bears. Baylor,

ranked 26th nationally by Golfstat, was led by junior Melanie Hagewood who shot 70-78-77 to finish

with a total of 225 for fourth place out of 108 participants. Hagewood’s scores put her into the NCAA

Individual tournament. Rounding out the individual scoring for the Bears were junior Kelli

McKandless (79-77-75=231) who finished tied for 11th. Senior Tara Bateman (80-82-78=240) tied

for 53rd place, while senior Nicole Johnson took 59th (80-82-79=241). Junior Hanna-Sofia

Svenningsson (86-81-81=248) tied for 86th place.

Sophomore Josefin Svenningsson had an outstanding tournament, finishing third overall at 5-

over par to carry Baylor to a fifth-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Central Regional and earn the

program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Championships. Svenningsson capped the tournament with an

even-par 71, carding five birdies and playing the front nine at 2-under par. The Bears made their

charge in the second round when they posted the second-lowest team round of the tournament with

a 297. Svenningsson led the way with a 72, while freshman Anna Rehnholm and sophomore Meredith

Jones each fired a 74. Seniors Kelly McKandless and Michaelyn Morgan shot 77 and 78, respectively.

After carding impressive 302-301 in the opening two rounds, Baylor was tied for the lead at the

2005 Central Regional heading into the final round at The Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock, Texas. A

rough third round 320 resulted in a 13-place drop for the Bears, who finished eight strokes out of

qualifying for a second straight NCAA Championship berth. Freshman sensation Sian Reddick led the

Bears by shooting an 11-over 227 and tying for 26th. Junior Josefin Svenningsson shot a 235 and tied

for 37th.

The 2004 Baylor women’s golf team made history by

making the program’s first-ever appearance in the

NCAA Championships. The Bears finished tied for 19th

and saw memorable rounds from all five players.

Sophomore Josefin Svenningsson was outstanding,

carding a 4-over par 292 with two even-par rounds of

72 bookended by a pair of 74s. In the final round,

Svenningsson parred eight holes on the front nine and

added a birdie on 17.

Sophomore Meredith Jones steadily improved

throughout the tournament and broke out with a

career-low 1-under par 71 in the final round. After a

bogey on the opening hole, Jones was par or better on

each of the final 17 holes, including birdies on No. 4 and No. 12.

Freshman Anna Rehnholm made sure to finish her rookie season on a positive note, firing a 1-over

par 73. Rehnholm birdied four of the last seven holes, including three straight on 15, 16 and 17.

Seniors Michaelyn Morgan and Kelli McKandless each had highlights on which to end their

collegiate careers. Morgan opened with a 73 to lead the Bears early. McKandless shot a 73 in the third

round as all five Bears carded a 76 or better and posted a tournament-low team round of 295.

Regional at the 6,289-yard, par-72 The Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. After a higher 318 in the first

round, the Bears buckled down to post back-to-back 310s in the final rounds. Junior Anna Rehnholm

stepped up to finish with a 79 to lead the Bears in a tie for 44th at 232. The Bears needed to finish in

the top eight to advance to the NCAA Championships.

For the eighth consecutive season the Baylor women's golf team appeared at an NCAA regional event.

With two seniors, a junior and two freshman, the Bears finished 14th in the 20-team event with a 918.

Senior All-Big 12 selection Allison Martin paced the way for Baylor, carding the team's lowest first and

second rounds before freshman Hannah Burke turned in a team-low 75 in the final round. Martin

finished tied for 24th with a 226 (72-72-80) while Burke finished just three strokes behind in a tie for

46th with her three-round total of 229 (77-77-75). The regional tournament brought an end to the

most successful spring season in Baylor women's golf history.
