HEAD COACH MIKE WYDRA

In his 30 seasons as head coach of the UC San Diego golf team, Mike Wydra has built a program which is one of the most respected at the NCAA Division II level. His teams

qualifi ed for the NCAA Championship 21 times since he began coaching the Tritons in 1980, and in 1993 the Tritons captured the NCAA Division III Championship on their home course at Torrey Pines. In 2004, the Tritons fi nished 15th at Nationals, their last NCAA Championship appearance. UCSD has fi nished second nationally fi ve times and has twice fi nished third at the national championships. In 1987, Wydra coached Pat Weishan to the NCAA Individual Championship.

Wydra, a 1976 graduate of UCSD, is well known in San Diego golf circles for his playing, teaching, and coaching credentials. As a collegiate player, he carded the low round (68) at the NAIA National Championships, and as an amateur player, produced an impressive resume which included membership on the winning team in the 1971 Junior America Cup in Mexico City. In 1975, he became the youngest player ever to capture the Torrey Pines Club Championship, and was the low amateur at the San Diego County Open in 1977. He reached the quarterfi nals at the California State Amateur Championships in both 1977 and 1978.

Wydra’s professional playing career was highlighted by an individual championship at the 1980 San Diego County Open. He also captured fi ve Golden State mini-tour titles and advanced to sectional qualifying for the US Open Champion-ships three times. In 1981, he attempted to qualify for the PGA Tour, fi nishing eighth at the Western Regional and missing his tour card by fi ve strokes at Pinehurst #6.

Since taking over the UCSD golf program, Wydra has led the Tritons to top-fi ve national fi nishes 13 times. He was named Far West Coach of the Year from 1990-1999, and in 1993 was named the Bridgestone NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Triton teams have produced 54 All-Americans in addition to an excellent graduation rate. Twenty-seven former Tritons have gone on to become golf professionals. In addition to his coaching duties, Wydra is well-known as a teaching professional and has served as Director of the Nike Junior Resident Golf Camp for the past 11 years.

ASSISTANT COACH DAN ANDERSON

Dan Anderson is in his fi fth season as an assistant golf coach at UC San Diego. Ander-son was previously at Cal State San Marcos from 2000-2004, where he was the head

women’s golf coach, directing the team to four top-10 fi nishes at the NAIA National Championships.

Anderson also coached four players to All-American honors and led three players to fi rst-place tournament fi n-ishes at San Marcos. In the summer, Anderson serves as Assistant Director for U.S. Sports Camps Inc., one of the largest Nike junior golf resident camps in the U.S.

Anderson is a 2000 graduate of Cal State San Marcos with a B.A. in Social Sciences.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2007-2008: Competed in 10 events in his third season as a Triton... Owned a scoring average of 77.3 over 27 rounds... Tied for 36th place at

the CSUB Poor Boy Invitational with a score of +8, 224... Placed sixth at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate with a combined score of +2, 218... Carded an even par, 72 in the fi rst and the second rounds of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, which were his best two rounds of the season.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2006-07: Played the most rounds of any member of the squad, competing in all 10 events and carding 30 rounds on the year... Had a team-leading 75.6 scoring average... Finished in the top-20 in half the tournaments he played in, including a season-best tie for 14th place at the Cal State Stanislaus Buzzini Invitational... Posted rounds of 73, 75 and 73 at the Buzzini Invite for a three round total of 5-over par, 221... Best tournament score was 1-over par at the CSUB Poor Boy Invitational, where he carded rounds of 68, 75 and 74 for the 217 total... The 4-under par, 68 was his best round of the season… That was tied for the team’s low round of the year with Nathan Phan, who carded 4-under par 68 scores on two occasions.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2005-06: Did not play in his fi rst season at UCSD.

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Oaks Christian High School. High school golf team ranked as high as third in the L.A. Times rankings... Placed fi fth in the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifer and sixth in the 2005 Qualifi er... Recorded several top fi ve fi nishes in the PGA Junior Series events... Shot a low round of 66 at Wood Ranch Country Club.

PERSONAL: Born on April 24, 1987 in Moorpark, Calif.... His mother is Lynn Jackson... Has two half-sisters, Brianna and Diedra... Is an Economics major in Roosevelt College... UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Earl W. Edwards - Director of AthleticsEarl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001.

Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those fi nishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won three straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.

Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007 he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.

A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to fi nd out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing

or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefi t the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletic department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are monitored and planned out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics. Mamula represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room that is over 12,000 square feet in size with state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and fi rst class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletic Department as one of the premier intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is the hub for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program where some of the athletic training students fulfi ll their clinical experience. Additionally the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the fi eld of competition in no time.

The UCSD campus is located in La Jolla, Calif., just minutes north of America’s sixth largest city, San Diego.

Spanish for ‘the jewel’, La Jolla is one of San Diego’s fi rst neighborhoods to be settled.
