Online education is the fastest growing segment of Tiffin University’s enrollment

The 2008 year was an
especially positive one for
Tiffin University. A few of the
highlights are described below:
ENROLLMENT
The 2008 fall enrollment was
2,705, which represents a
one-year increase of 15.2% and
a five-year increase of 80.4%.
This compares with a one-year
increase of 2.3% and a five-year increase of 4.5% for the combined
total for all other colleges and universities in Ohio.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The Master of Education degree, Associate of Arts in General
Studies degree, undergraduate major in General Science and
minor in Sports and Recreation Management, and certificate in
Addiction Counseling were implemented.
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
TU’s MBA program in Romania was delivered in Timisoara in
addition to Bucharest, and a partnership was developed with
Nanjing Normal University in addition to the existing partnership
with Beijing Normal University in China. In order to give more
attention to the needs of the increasing enrollment of internation-
al students on the Tiffin campus, the part-time positions of Director
of International Student Services and Assistant Director
of International Recruitment were expanded to full-time, and
improvements were made to the English Language and
American Culture Program.
ATHLETICS
The University began competing as a member of the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which is considered by many
to be the premier NCAA Division II conference. The new equestrian
team continued to perform very well, and plans were developed
for a women’s lacrosse team to begin competition in the 2009-10
academic year.
FINANCES
The University’s long-term debt was consolidated and refinanced
at lower rates and more favorable terms, and the fiscal year ended
with a healthy surplus and a clean audit.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Solicitation of pledges and gifts continued for the capital
campaign to raise funds for construction of the recreation
center and other campus improvements, as well as endowed
scholarships.
CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS
The University worked with officials of the City of Tiffin and the
Ohio Department of Transportation to complete the plans to use
federal funds to improve the appearance and pedestrian safety of
two streets that run through the Tiffin campus. Also, an outdoor
track was constructed and the Gillmor Center gymnasium was
enhanced with additional storage capacity, new score boards,
and improved locker rooms.
STUDENT SERVICES
Special efforts to improve campus safety included updating the
University’s emergency response plan and conducting two simula-
tion exercises. Also, the position of Director of Residence Life was
created to enhance residential life.
ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
Continued progress was made in implementing a comprehensive
program for assessing learning outcomes, and work began on
the self-study report as part of the process for TU to seek re-
accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North
Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
TECHNOLOGY
The University began using eCollege as the platform for all online
courses, a new point of sale system was installed in the bookstore,
the computer system was upgraded to enhance information
security, and other improvements were made for using technology
to streamline various administrative functions.
THANK YOU
The donors who are recognized in this report play a very important
role in helping make these improvements possible, as well as the
many other exciting things that are happening at Tiffin University.
Students who attend TU for many years in the future will benefit
from the generous gifts provided by our donors, in addition to
the support provided by our Board of Trustees, staff and faculty,
and other alumni and friends. The future is bright for TU, and my
wife, Susan, and I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this
dynamic university.

Five examples of the many types of students
that Tiffin University attracts for its online
programs are presented below. They come
from diverse backgrounds. They come from
different cities – different states. Each is married
and committed to family and work. In addition
to balancing life at home with their careers, they
are also pursuing degrees at Tiffin University as
online students. As online students, they live
“many lives” at once, on the way to completing
their respective programs.
Jeffrey Hohman (Chino, California) is a Los
Angeles County deputy sheriff, working 60-70
hours a week. Diana Nolen (Galion, Ohio)
is a stay-at-home mom with four children,
the youngest diagnosed with spinal muscular
atrophy. Desa M. Jacobs (Penfield, Ohio) is an
assistant vice president for a major bank and has
two children, ages 14 years and 15 months. Jeff
Dyrlund (Orlando, Florida) is also an execu-
tive in the banking industry and has two young
boys, ages 3 and 5. George B. Snyder (Vernon
Township, Ohio) is currently working three jobs
– for a hospital, a fire department, and a police
department.
Jessyln and Jeff Hohman
‘I AM BECOMING A MORE COMPETITIVE
EMPLOYEE IN TODAY’S FAST-PACED JOB
MARKET.
Jeff Hohman works in law enforcement as a
deputy sheriff, but is pursuing a Bachelor of
Business Administration degree from TU. He
wants to broaden his base of knowledge to
give him an edge in what has become a highly
competitive job market. He hopes to graduate
in January 2010.
One of the reasons Hohman chose Tiffin is
because of a cooperative agreement with the
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).
The department has a program called LASD
University, which partners with colleges and
universities across the country to assist its staff in
earning or finishing their degrees.
“Tiffin University was the only school on LASD
University’s list of approved schools that offered
a 100 percent online schedule,” he says. “Jug-
gling work, family and school is a difficult task for
me. I work 60 to 70 hours a week. I have a great
wife who holds our home together. If it were
not for Tiffin University’s 100 percent online de-
gree program, I would not be able to finish my
education. My unpredictable schedule almost
guarantees that I would not be able to arrive at
assigned times for class. Tiffin’s program allows
me to accomplish schoolwork when and where
I have the time.”
Hohman says he enjoys his job. “I love chasing
bad guys and taking crooks to jail. I like where I
am at in my career. Having this degree, however,
will help solidify my position with my employer
and enable me to move up should I choose to in
the future.”
He adds, “Many people ask me why I chose not
to get a degree in criminal justice. My response
is simple. I am already a professional in criminal
justice, why would I want to get a degree in
something I am already a pro at?”
Tiffin University is giving him the opportunity to
become a pro in another field.
The many lives of an online student
are as varied as the students themselves, and each has a compelling story to tell.
> 5
Online education is the fastest growing segment of Tiffin University’s enrollment. The Online
Education Database (OEDb) ranks TU in the top tier of colleges and universities that offer courses and
programs online.
“During these challenging financial times, it is more important than ever that students make sure they
are getting a valuable education for their tuition dollar. We recognize the top schools as the leading
degree-granting online institutions in the U.S.,” remarks Ashley Merusi, OEDb spokesperson.
“Tiffin University is extremely proud of the quality of our online programs,” says TU President
Paul Marion. “We have dedicated professional instructors. Our students learn from someone
who knows the academic content and also has experience in applying the learning to real world
experiences.”
Tiffin University’s online students receive the same high-quality, professionally-focused education
and degree as its on-campus students – with one exception: no commute. TU’s online programs are
centered around the students, who set their own schedules. The curriculum is delivered by an
accomplished and highly-trained faculty, many of whom work in the field they are teaching. TU’s
online programs offer the same small classes and intense interaction between students and faculty
that one would find on campus. TU has a dedicated staff to mentor and lead its online students from
day one of classes through the completion of their degree programs.
TU offers its online courses on a state-of-the-art learning platform in partnership with eCollege,
a leader in online education. The eCollege platform is known for its reliability, and TU is known
for its personal involvement in making the online experience successful. In addition to the
convenience of online learning, Tiffin University has the capability to put each online student
in touch with faculty members in real time through Class Live Pro, a synchronous learning tool
that is embedded in all of its online courses.
All of Tiffin University’s online programs are authorized by the Ohio Board of Regents and are
accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and
Schools, one of the six regional accreditation bodies recognized by all major public and private
colleges and universities in America. TU’s online business programs are also accredited by the
Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs.6 <

Diana Nolen
‘I ONLY HAVE TWO-AND-A-HALF HOURS
A DAY.’
Diana Nolen had just started her studies at
Marion Technical College for Nursing when the
youngest of her four children was born and
diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, making
him completely dependent on others for his
care. Because of her need to be a stay-at-home
mom, she could no longer attend college in a
traditional classroom setting. Tiffin University’s
online program is making her goal of finishing
an Associate of Arts in General Studies possible.
She expects to graduate in December 2010. She
hopes to eventually continue her education and
return to work in respiratory or physical therapy.
Nolen chose TU because of its complete online
program. She says that other schools were offer-
ing a mix of online and classroom education, but
her “time to attend classes is not at the normal
times classes are held elsewhere.”
”I also have three other children, and sometimes
it gets pretty hectic. My girls are teenagers
though, so they help out quite a bit,” she says.
“My husband works second shift, three of my
children go to school all day, and my young-
est son goes to school for 2 1/2 hours a day—
that is when I get my schoolwork done.”
Nolen says she appreciates the expertise of
the Tiffin University faculty and staff. “Also, the
interaction with students in the online setting
is great,” she remarks. “It is nice to get to know
different people from different backgrounds, and
with different struggles, and to hear supportive
comments.”
Tyler (age 5), Jeff Dyrlund and Carson (age 3)
FLEXIBILITY IS A KEY COMPONENT WITH
THE ONLINE PROGRAM.
Like Desa Jacobs, Jeff Dyrlund works in the
financial industry. He is a bank branch manager/
vice president, responsible for the small busi-
ness results and community development as
well as the coaching and development of the
branch staff. Married with two boys, ages 3 and
5, he will finish his MBA with a concentration in
Leadership in May.
“It is becoming increasingly important to differ-
entiate yourself amongst your peers as it relates
to what you offer to your clients in the banking
industry,” Dyrlund says. “Every bank has checking
accounts, savings accounts, loans, and so forth,
but not every bank has employees that are ex-
perts in their field. By continuing my education,
it affords me the opportunity to gain positions of
greater responsibility within my organization –
all while developing those around me.”
He remarks that the way the online MBA is set
up, “You are awarded with so much flexibility,”
he explained. “As a student, you are able to
complete your work at any time of the day
and the workload is very reasonable. My chief
concern of any online degree was the lack of the
classroom experience. However, the folks who
enroll in the online MBA will, without question,
develop a great understanding in their con-
centration. A majority of the classes offer both
online discussions and written papers. You still
have the setting to talk to other students and
understand their thoughts about subject matter
as well as your own analytical responses to the
text and case studies assigned.”
Dyrlund praises the faculty and staff at TU, as
well as his fellow students. “The student interac-
tion has been very positive,” he says. “Even
though communication will seldom, if ever, be
face to face, you are able to work very efficiently
through group projects.”
He says his future plans include moving into an
executive role in the banking industry, as well as
potentially attending law school.
Kirk and Desa Jacobs, Ryan (age 14), Sammi (the
smiling Beagle) and Nicholas (age 16)
‘WHEN I GRADUATE, I WILL BE THE FIRST
ONE IN MY FAMILY TO OBTAIN A COLLEGE
DEGREE.’
Desa M. Jacobs is an assistant vice president
with National City Bank, now a subsidiary of PNC
Bank. She is working on a Bachelor of Business
Administration degree with a concentration
in Organizational Management, and hopes to
graduate this spring, which will mark her 11th
year pursuing a college degree.
“I have a family, with a toddler and a 14-year-old,

a household to run, a full-time job and only the capacity to take one or two classes at a time.
Every year I chipped away at three or maybe four
classes until I decided to enroll in Tiffin Univer-
sity’s Fast Track program in Elyria, Ohio to finally
finish,” she says. “What I liked about Fast Track,
which is a seated program, was the ability to eas-
ily transfer my studies to TU’s online program.”
She explains: “I suppose what makes my story
unique is what has transpired over the last 18
months. About three weeks after the Fast Track
program started, I found out I was expect-
ing. My plan was to continue with the seated
program as long as possible and then go to the
online program until the baby was born.”
During her seventh month, however, her
husband became ill and was hospitalized. Four
weeks after her husband was released from the
hospital, Jacobs went into pre-term labor.
“My son was born seven weeks early and spent
23 days in the NICU at Metro General Hospital in
Cleveland. There was no way – considering my
husband’s condition, a pending subsequent sur-
gery, a baby in the NICU and one child at home
already – that I could be away from home for
four hours, even just one night a week,” she says.
She transferred to TU’s online program. Still, jug-
gling school and work can be a real balancing
act. “There are days I wonder if I can get it all
done,” she says. “It takes a lot of planning and
task master behavior. I work on my assignments
when I have the time. I have done homework
in the craziest of places – at my son’s baseball
practices and games, in the maternity ward,
in the NICU, at work, in the airport and before
leadership conferences—I am grateful for the
support from my family.”
Jacobs says that writing some of the final papers
for some of her more difficult classes means
she stays hidden in her office for hours at a time
for multiple days. “On these days, my husband
takes care of the kids and it is a fend-for-yourself-
dinner kind of day or I wait until the little one is
in bed.”
She adds that the design of the online program
is essential to her success. “All of our major
assignments have been due on the weekend,
which helps greatly. The assignments are all
published at the beginning of the course, which
allows you to plan accordingly as well,” she
comments. “If you know you will be traveling for
work and may not have an Internet connec-
tion accessible to you, the instructors are often
flexible with notice. For example, I was in the
hospital unexpectedly for four days when I had
my son. I had a discussion board response due
during my hospital stay, so I wrote my response
out and had my husband drive home so he
could post it for me. I suppose you do what it
takes to get everything done.”
The experience of a non-traditional student is
not only different from the student’s perspective,
but from a teacher’s perspective as well. “It is
common for us to have a full day of work making
decisions, managing people and budgets, and
for some – picking up kids, cooking dinner, giv-
ing baths, reading books and tucking in before
we open our book,” she says. “This brings a
unique view to the assignment and a level of se-

Snyder is enrolled in the degree completion pro-
gram for the Bachelor of Criminal Justice with
a concentration in Justice Administration, and
will complete his coursework for graduation in
July. He credits his wife of six years, Katie, for her
encouragement and support as he completes
his online program. He notes that he is the first
member of his family to attend college.
“It is about pursuing a dream not only for career
advancement, but simply for me,” he says.
When Snyder began his search for the right
school, he knew he has specific needs. “First, the
program had to be completely online. I don’t
have the time to go and sit in a classroom. Sec-
ond, I have a significant background in public
safety, and at the time had around 17 years in
the fire department alone, which means that I
already had a lot of life experience accompanied
by formal training. I needed a school that would
recognize the formal training and offer college
credit for it. Third, the tuition had to be reason-
able. While online courses require a facilitator
and a computer server, the cost of being in a
brick-and-mortar classroom is not there and the
tuition should reflect that. Finally, the school
had to be appropriately accredited, so in the
event that I wish to pursue a master’s degree,
there would be no problem with the graduate
program accepting my undergraduate degree.”
He found each of these qualities in Tiffin Univer-
sity’s online education program.
“The challenges of schoolwork in relation to the
rest of my life is probably the most difficult thing
which with to deal throughout this program,”
Snyder says. “I work three jobs, and then still
need to spend quality time with my family. My
wife works three 12-hour shifts per week, and
she is on midnight turn where I am on a modi-
fied day/afternoon turn. I find that I complete
most of my work for school when she is at work,
simply because I have no distractions. When
I get home, she is at work, and I spend many
nights awake until 3 a.m. finishing what I can.”
Snyder is cognizant that part of completing
his degree is a component of job security. “A
degree is becoming more and more a neces-
sary component in an uncertain economy,” he
says. “But there is also personal gratification,
and the fact that I will be the first in my family
to have earned a degree, and one of the first in
my fire department to have earned a bachelor’s
degree. So, needless to say, this has been more
of a personal endeavor than anything else. I do,
however, have aspirations to become the fire
chief of my fire department some day, as well as
advance in hospital administration. This degree
will hopefully set me up for just that.”
riousness to getting the best out of the class. We
are often older and we recognize how precious
our time is with our families. In many instances,
we write the check for tuition and for some, go
through the pains of our employer’s tuition reim-
bursement process. The cost – not just mon-
etary – and the benefit of this experience are
realized on a different plane, making our expec-
tations of the materials, the curriculum and the
teaching higher.” Jacobs says: “A non-traditional
student is tenacious, driven and will not accept
mediocrity from our instructors. Just as it takes a
unique person to be a non-traditional student, it
takes a unique person to teach them.”
With a strong sense of achievement, she adds,
“When I graduate, I will be the first one in my
family to obtain a college degree. I am ex-
tremely proud of this accomplishment.”
George Snyder and his nephew, Avery
‘IT IS ABOUT PURSUING A DREAM NOT
ONLY FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT, BUT
SIMPLY FOR ME.’
George B. Snyder calls his employment a bit
complex – which is quite the understatement.
“I actually hold three jobs. My primary employ-
ment is at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren,
Ohio. I am the director and lead instructor of the
Institute for Prehospital Care, an education pro-
gram that trains emergency medical service pro-
viders, particularly paramedics. My second job is
as the assistant fire chief of the Burghill Vernon
Fire Department. I will have been a firefighter
for 20 years in May, and have been in EMS for 17
of those years. Finally, I also am a police officer
working for the City of Cortland, Ohio. I have
been a police officer for over 10 years to date.”
