The Sandler Center for the Performing ArtsFoundation is a non‐profit, 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to support and sustain the Sandler Center and its programs. The Sandler Center Foundation raised over $15 million for the Capital Campaign to help build the facility. Today, the Foundation works to sustain the world‐class programming and vital educational opportunities for the citizens and visitors of Virginia Beach‐ not just this year, but every year.
Built as a community resource for the culturalarts in Virginia Beach, the Sandler Center provides the citizens in Hampton Roads with enhanced exposure to music, dance, comedy and drama.
And that’s not all. The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts is an unparalleled resource for arts education and appreciation for the region. By offering family programming, workshops and master classes for students in Hampton Roads, the Sandler Center invests in the “stars of tomorrow” through its Education programs. The Center also serves as the home for several Virginia Beach based organizations such as the Virginia Musical Theatre and the Virginia Beach Forum. Additionally, many regional organizations including the Virginia Arts Festival and the Virginia Symphony use the Sandler Center as a regular venue for performances.

Our Season Highlights

After opening to acclaim and bringing extraordinary performances to more than 140,000 patrons in its inaugural season, the Sandler Center had a spectacular start to its second season. Opening night with the legendary R&B group, The Commodores, welcomed diverse backgrounds and had the audience on their feet for hit after hit! In the second month of the season, the Center had two sold‐out performances – Capitol Steps and the performance of singer‐songwriters Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt, who complimented the management staff saying, “The Sandler Center should w cause you arite a ‘How‐To’ book for operating venues, be ll have it down!”
And that’s not all…in November, blues legend Buddy Guy and country music star Vince Gill gave memorable performances to sell out crowds. The holidays were also joyous as the Center was filled with the sounds of celebration with a trio of concerts that brightened the season including Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s Wild & Swingin’ Holiday Party and the legendary King’s Singers. Pianist Jim Brickman brought his heartfelt holiday celebration to the Center December 22.
There was music for every taste, too. A must for jazz lovers, the brilliant Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis, performed January 17. Blues buffs loved the authentic, extraordinary playing of guitar legends Jorma Kaukonen and Robben Ford in Guitar Blues and Broadway fans enjoyed a feast of favorites, from classics like The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and many more, in 100 Years of Broadway. Rocker Jonny Lang fired up a sizzling set of songs and Saxophonist David Sanborn and Tower of Power blazed through jazz, rock, R&B and power pop in an unforgettable concert. And on April 16, the great Art Garfunkel sang the songs that have made him an icon and a friend for more than four decades.
Pop vocal prodigy and American Idol runner‐up David Archuleta kicked off his highly‐anticipated 2009 tour right here at our own Sandler Center for the Performing Arts. From California to Tokyo, Japan, fans flew in from across the globe to make sure they were the very first to witness Archuleta and his truly phenomenal voice on his first international tour. And one of the greatest showmen in the world transformed the Sandler Center stage when Wayne Newton, "Mr. Las Vegas" himself, performed his signature blend of pop, rhythm and blues, ballads, country, and rock, including hits like “Danke choen.” S

Every child, every grade, every year
The arts play a vital role in education, and the Sandler Center is proud to play an important role in bringing engaging, meaningful arts experiences to young people in our communities. With the ultimate goal of “every child, every grade, every year,” the Sandler Center, in partnership with the Virginia Arts Festival’s WorldClass© Education Department, presents education outreach opportunities, workshops, and master classes geared towards school‐aged children in grades K‐12. During the 2008‐2009 season, the Sandler Center reached over 4,000 students with these great programs.
In October, more than 250 elementary school children saw a favorite story leap to life in The Phantom Tollbooth. For middle school and high school musicians, the opportunity to watch and learn from a world‐renowned virtuoso is a dream come true. In November, string students from Virginia Beach Public Schools joined area professional musicians from Symphonicity and Virginia Symphony Orchestra for a question and answer session with the internationally acclaimed violinist, Midori—and that evening, more than 100 students were in the audience as Midori

The student matinee performance of The American Shakespeare Center on Tour’s Hamlet created so much interest that a second student matinee was added to accommodate more than 200 additional students. Following the added Wednesday matinee, three members of the troupe headed to Salem High School’s Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts to work with theater students on ways to bring Shakespeare’s word from the page to the stage. Teachers and students alike offered glowing praise for the experience.

The Sandler Center was packed with kids of all ages for the Annual Kids Arts Palooza, sponsored in part by the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission, on January 24th. Over 2,000 children and parents took part in this free event that included face painting, balloon animals, costumed cartoon characters, kid‐friendly crafts and performances, and much, much more!
This season the Sandler Center’s light‐filled lobby became even more beautiful with the addition of three glass sculptures by the internationally renowned Japanese artist, Toshio Iezumi. With a generous contribution from Wachovia, the sculptures permanently took their place on the parterre of the Sandler Center Main Lobby on April 16th with a dramatic public unveiling and elegant reception.
Throughout the year, donors and special guests enjoyed VIP access to Great Performance Series events. Donors were invited to meet several artists this season in private receptions following each performance.
The Sandler Center has an attractive new addition to its facade: a sleek, contemporary styled digital kiosk that will serve as a striking marquee for this beautiful performing arts center. With a kinetic, engaging display, the marquee offers Sandler Center visitors and passersby up‐to‐the‐minute information on performances and events. This vital complement to the Sandler Center’s streetscape is sponsored by Dominion Virginia Power and was christened at a “Powering Up” ceremony and reception on August 20, 2009.
The Sandler Center Outdoor Plaza was rockin’ every Wednesday night over the summer months with our 1st Annual Summer Concert Series, “Why Not Wednesdays?” The series proved to be a cure for the midweek blahs all summer long offering free music and entertainment for people of all ages. And best of all, the series raised over $4,000 for the Sandler Center Foundation’s Education Endowment through food and beverage sales! We are looking orward to hosting this free concert series again next summer! f
