Conference and National Affiliations

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over425 members and is the largestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with anathletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho,Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff careabout the well-being of student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference The nine private collegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitmanand Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and thenreturned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfrom the conference in 1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. TheNWC offers championships

in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2008

Willamette University baseball players andcoaches are excited about the 2008 season. TheBearcats return all three starting pitchers fromlast spring, plus three of the top four hittersand four relief pitchers with ERAs less than5.00 who threw at least 15 innings. The team’s list of returning players includesnine seniors. The seniors possess significantexperience and give the Bearcats a solid mix of offensive, defensive and pitching skills. With somany returning players it’s easy to forget thatWillamette must replace two infield starters andtwo positions in the outfield. Making the transition easier will be severalnew players who will challenge for playing timein their first season with the Bearcats. Anotherbonus is the return to full strength of powerhitter Kyle Stalker (Jr., 1B), who hit five homeruns in 2007 despite battling injuries all season. Stalker is one of several returning Bearcats who are capable of providing an offensive sparkthis year. Sean Anderson (Sr., CF) led the teamwith 15 doubles in 2007 and Colin Young (Sr., RF) achieved a .527 slugging percentage. DavidTufo (Jr., 3B) blasted nine doubles for the ‘Cats. Willamette expects to be competitive with every team in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats will play each of the other eight NWCteams a total of four times as the conferencechanges from its previous three-game format. WU also is set for non-conference games against Menlo College and Cal State-East Bay,plus a total of three games against teams from the eastern U.S. during a Spring Break trip toOrlando, Fla.

Pitching Willamette’s three returning starters on themound are left-hander Clint Moran and right-handers Tye Sundlee and Jarrid Summers. Lastyear, Moran led the pitching staff with a totalof 53 strikeouts. Sundlee registered a 4.42 ERA and struck out 51 batters. Summers was 6-4 andwas named Honorable Mention All-NWC. Rounding out the starting rotation will bejunior Kelsey Nakata (RHP), who was solid in

relief last season. Nakata went 3-2 with a 4.96ERA and two saves. Senior pitchers Jimmy Meuel (RHP) andRyan Smith (RHP) each started several gamesin 2006, but will be relievers in 2007. Meuel heldopponents to a .250 batting average and Smith produced a 3.45 ERA. Scott Martin (So., RHP)will be ready to supply the Bearcats with middlerelief throughout the season. Jack McGee, a junior right-handed pitcherand third baseman, will be the team’s closer. He threw just one inning last season, but struck outtwo batters and is ready for regular duty in 2008.

Catching The Bearcats have two returning catchers inDan Maslanik (Jr.) and Zach Kimball (So.), whoare solid behind the plate. Maslanik started 23games in 2007 and threw out nine base stealers.

Kyle Stalker hit nine home runs in 2006 andfive home runs last season.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2008

Kimball started 16 games a year ago, but he willmiss the entire 2008 season due to injury. Freshman Max Stepan provides Willamettewith quality depth at catcher. He has a strong arm for throws to second base and brings powerto the plate on offense.

Infield The Bearcats have two returning starters onthe infield in Ellis Webster (Jr.) at second base and David Tufo (Jr.) at third base. Webster sawaction in 33 games a year ago, while Tufo playedin 37 games. Tufo batted .290 with 9 doubles. Stalker will take over at first base for senior starter Grant Yamaguchi. In 2007, Yamaguchi made 313 putouts and hit .296. Stalker is solidon defense and brings power to the offense. At shortstop, the Bearcats must replace MattRasmussen, who hit .280 as a senior and played in 106 games in his career. His replacement willbe Doug Bloom, a freshman from nearby South Salem High School. Bloom has good range ondefense and is consistent at the plate. McGee and Andrew Ross (So.) will battle Tufo for playing time at third. Each possessesgood defensive skills. Providing depth at secondbase are Tufo and Michael Dearborn (Fr.).

Outfield Willamette graduated left fielder Ty Eriksen and right fielder Kelly Gilmore. Eriksen hit .264and had 54 putouts. Gilmore’s career statisticsincluded 126 games played, 123 starts, 113 hits,85 runs, 24 doubles and 115 walks.

Anderson (CF) is a returning starter who hit .312 last season. He was 9 of 12 on stolen bases and ended the year 23 of 34 in his career. Heholds WU’s career record for doubles with 38. Young (RF) led the Willamette squad with a.351 batting average and was named Honorable Mention All-NWC. He played in 30 games andhad 19 starts. He was 7 of 10 on stolen bases. Joining Anderson and Young among WU’stop outfielders are senior Jordan Roberts (CF), sophomore Michael Rierson (RF) and freshman T.C. Lee (LF). Roberts batted .350 and played in14 games last year. Lee is from Lafayette, Calif.,and Rierson is from Sprague HS in Salem, Ore.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines.Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of

parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for

us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American

Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.
