“Since I was 12 years old, my plan was to play professional golf. I was determined that golf was going to be my life. I couldn’t wait to get out there and start playing with Tiger Woods and the guys on tour, said Jake Owen, who’d mapped out his life at 12 years old. Jake Owen’s aim was true; unfortunately, one summer after-noon he suffered a career ending injury. That accident turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When he put down his golf clubs, he picked up a guitar, and a new plan emerged; one that would take him off the fairway and onto Music Row, bypassing—he admits--- many of the traditional steps along the route. One afternoon he walked into a campus bar, Pot Belly’s, drawn by the live music. “There was a guy in there, just him, playing guitar and singing. I thought to myself, ‘I can do that.’” The following day, undeterred by the fact this his entire public entertainment experience consisted of singing Boot Scootin’

Boogie for his fifth grade graduation, Owen went back to the bar, found the owner, and asked what he needed to do to get a playing gig. Apparently, proximity and availability won him the job and he was on stage that very night. “I just plugged in my acoustic guitar and started singing.” He made $75 a night, free beer, and caught the eyes of a few ladies. “The whole time I was golfing, I never had a girl come up to me and say, ‘Wow, nice clubs.’ Or, ‘I love your swing.’ But a guitar is a whole different story.” The voice that emerged from some previously untapped internal spring was mighty impressive too. The rich, resonant baritone that colored the songs of artists decades older than him belied his youth, lent credibility to his relative lack of experience, and provided some gravitas to his model-worthy good looks. When he finally made his first visit to Music Row, it wasn’t to a record label, or a publisher, or a management office. It was to open a bank account, a deposit that ultimately reaped im-measurable interest and dividends. “When Becky (the bank employee) asked me what I did for a living, I told her I was a singer/songwriter. She said she would like to hear my music sometime; luckily, I just happened to have a CD,” he says with a laugh. The following day, he got a phone call from Warner-Chappell Music, expressing interest in his material. Though that arrangement did not ultimately work out, Owen felt that his decision to pursue a career in Nashville has been validated. A chance meeting over lunch with producer Jimmy Ritchey (Clay Walker, Mark Chesnutt) confirmed it. “We just hit it off right away,” he says. “We became friends first. But he was very supportive. For the next 18 months, we basically hung out, writing songs. I hardly even went out of my apartment. I wrote a song with Jimmy and Chuck Jones called

Ghost that we thought Kenny Chesney was going to record. He didn’t, but that sort of put me on the RCA radar. Jimmy got me together with Renee Bell, Senior Vice President for SonyBMG Nashville and she signed me.”Less than two years after moving to Nashville, the 24-year-old former golfer had a recording deal and basically brought a finished album to the table. Owen had already earned the respect of an artist whose opinion he held in high regard. “Soon after I signed to RCA, we flew to Chicago to see Kenny Chesney. We went on his bus after the show and when Renee introduced us, she says, ‘Jake is the guy who co-wrote Ghost.’ He starts singing it back to me, word for word! I couldn’t believe it. He told me he loved the song, and wanted to record it, but it just didn’t work out. It blew my mind. Two years ago, I was that kid in the nosebleed section of the Leon County Civic Center in Tal-lahassee, watching him run back and forth on stage, a million miles away. I wondered what that would feel like. And there I was, sitting on his bus, one foot away from him, listening to him sing my song back at me.” “When I look at my life, where I am right now, I know how improbable it is. I am totally aware of that. I haven’t been doing it and dreaming about it since I was five years old, it doesn’t run in my family, I didn’t grow up singing in church, I didn’t spend 10 years in honky-tonks. But I have always worked hard at whatever I have done, whether it was golf or writing songs or playing at Potbelly’s in Tallahassee. I feel like things happen for a reason, and we are each here for a reason. Maybe the accident that ended my golfing career happened be-cause I was supposed to do this. How many people would my golf game have affected? I hope that my music and my songs can touch people, like I have been touched by other artists’ songs. Is that something that you measure by years or dues? I think it’s something from the heart, and who can measure that?”

As in the past years during the county fair, the city will return Kenil-worth Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets to one-way traffic beginning Monday, September 22nd until Friday, October 3rd. Traffic may only travel east on Kenilworth Avenue between 7th and 8th during that time

period. “NO PARKING” signs will be erected to prohibit parking on that section of Kenilworth during the actual fair dates. This no-parking ban is to ease the flow of traffic of the big trucks hauling tractors, en-tertainment crews, etc., as they negotiate Kenilworth Avenue and make the turn into the 8th Street gate at the fairgrounds. Traffic going north on 7th Street from Bank Street/Otsego Avenue will not be allowed to go through to the main Fair entrance. Traffic will be detoured west on Alder Street.

“Anyone involved in 4-H and/or FFA in Coshocton County understands the importance of these programs,” Kelly Miller of Farm Credit Services shared. “These programs teach our young people responsibility, leadership and education for the future and they also make a big impact on our community as well.” But in addition to 4-H and FFA Miller reminds us that many local businesses and companies contribute in a huge way to the success of many youth programs throughout the county and to the young people that work so hard all year long with their various projects. One very important way local businesses support these programs is through the annual Junior Fair Livestock Auction which takes place every year on the final day of the Coshocton County Fair. “Last years sales for the Junior Fair Auction totaled more than $200,000.00,” Miller said. “This was up from the previous year. This year’s Junior Fair Livestock Auction will be held Thursday, October 2, beginning with the sale of champions at 5:30 PM in Hunter Arena. After the sale of champions the auction will begin two auction rings, one will continue in Hunter Arena and the second will commence in the Junior Fair Arena.” Miller says that any business or individual can easily become an important part of the 2008 Junior Fair Auction and that she along with Farm Credit Services co-worker Suzanne Shrimplin is available to help any business or individual wanting to become involved in the sale. “If anyone is unable to attend the fair or if they’re just busy the night of sale, Farm Credit Ser-vices can make it possible for that individual to still support the sale,” Miller explained. “Suzanne and I are now located in the Farm Credit Services Coshocton office and we can take your bids to the sale and buy on your behalf.” Shrimplin says individuals and businesses are both welcome to use this service and can phone Farm Credit Services at 740-622-6006 and ask for Kelly or Suzanne to place their bids. Bids can also be placed by stopping in the office located at 115 N. Second Street, Suite B (Family Video Building) to speak with them personally. “We can discuss the process in length with anyone interested,” Miller added. “We’ve been of-fering this service for the past few years and it has had a very positive effect on the Junior Fair Auction results overall. It’s a good system that has allowed us an opportunity to help increase the sales of the auction for many of the young people in our community.” “As a past 4-H member and a parent of a past 4-H member, I see a continuing circle of growing up in the 4-H and FFA program,” she said. “One memory I will never forget is when Farm Credit Services purchased my market steer at the county fair some years back. Farm Credit Services has been involved in the program for many years along with several other local companies and businesses. I always remember the supporters of the Junior Fair Livestock sale and try to support them in their businesses as well.” If you attend the sale yourself or enlist Farm Credit Services to attend on your behalf it’s im-portant to realize how the ‘buy-bid’ works on each market animal. Each market animal is given a ‘buy-bid’ by the meat packers. If a business, company or individual purchases an animal but doesn’t want to actually keep that animal, they have the option of selling the animal to the meat packers at the ‘buy-bid’ price. If a buyer selects this option they would only need to pay the difference between their bid and the buy-bid. The auctioneer must be informed at the time of purchase if you want to “keep” the animal or “buy-bid” it. All animals are sold by the head. Every Junior Fair Livestock Buyer will receive a ‘buyer rosette’ and a dated picture of the youth with their project to be displayed in their business or home. Champion buyers will also be presented with a banner to display in their business or home. Buyers’ letters from area youth will be mailed out soon to local businesses and companies ask-ing for their support of the sale. Local 4-H and FFA members along with their parents, advisors and families greatly appreciate the local support of the livestock auction. The sale will be covered by WTNS radio, the Coshocton Beacon and the Coshocton Tribune which is good advertisement for the businesses and also supports the youth. Please take the time to help promote this year’s auction by supporting the youth in “Coshocton County”!

Rotary Pavilion Renovation Completeby Kori Hardesty

The Rotary Pavilion at the fairgrounds received its makeover just in time for the 157th Coshocton County Fair. Built 12 years ago with fund-ing provided by the Coshoc-ton Rotary Club, the Pavilion has been used for meetings, picnics, and free entertain-ment at the fair. The Junior Fair opening ceremony is held at the structure, and it’s also where the Junior Fair King and Queen are crowned.

Due to disrepair and poor acoustics, the Pavilion has been in need of a new ceiling. Jim Childress, Coshocton County Fairboard member, requested a donation from the Coshocton Rotary Club for the renovation. The club generously approved the request, and Childress contracted Carl & Todd Cognion Construction to do the repair. “The acoustics were really poor, and the sound was just going up into the attic,” Chil-dress explained. “We wanted better acoustics to showcase the groups that come in here to perform.” The new ceiling has aesthetic appeal in addition to better sound quality. Cool, energy-saving fluorescent lighting was installed as well, making the Pavilion look like new. “I’m very pleased with how it turned out,” Childress expressed, “and would like to thank the Rotary Club and Carl & Todd Cognion for being so good to us.”
