Established in 1844, Olivet College isa private, liberal arts institution located insouth central Michigan, between BattleCreek and Lansing. Olivet was one of thefirst institutions in America to admit womenand minorities. The college offers opportunities for students to get involved in morethan 20 clubs and organizations. Approximately 40 percent of all Olivetstudents participate in athletics on a non-scholarship basis.

In a typical year, the student bodyincludes 20 percent minority students and international students from 14countries. The Olivet College women’s tennis program will be in arebuilding mode this season, as five Comets finished theirfour years of eligibility last spring. All five made significantcontributions to the team during their four years at Olivet.

Senior Abbie Utberg (Commerce Twp./Walled LakeCentral) returns with the most experience. In three seasons atOlivet, she has played at five of the six singles flights and allthree doubles flights. Utberg has been the most successful indoubles play, where she has 24 wins.

Junior Jaclyn Mummaw (Buchanan), who will serve asthe team’s captain during the 2007 season, is expected toclimb into the No. 1 singles spot in the lineup and team withUtberg for the No. 1 doubles position. Mummaw has postedidentical 10-8 records in singles play each of her first twoyears at Olivet. Last year, Mummaw and Utberg were partnersat No. 2 doubles and had a 10-7 record.

Mary Anne McMullen begins hereighth season as the head coach ofthe Ol ivet Col lege women’s tennisteam.

Over the last seven years, McMullenhas transformed the Comets into asolid program. The rebuilding effortkicked into high gear when last year’s

senior class enrolled at Olivet and gave new life to theprogram.

In 2004, Olivet won six matches. The biggest win was6-3 over Alma College, which snapped a 104-match losingstreak in Michigan Intercol legiate Athlet ic Associat ion(MIAA) play.

In 2005, McMullen’s Comets bettered the 2004 wintotal by three with nine victories. In addition, Olivet had aplayer earn All-MIAA honors for the first time in schoolhistory. In 2006, the Comets won eight matches. Duringthe 2007 season, Olivet won a school-record 10 matches.Under her tutelage, Rachel Vilums became a three-timeAll-MIAA player.

McMullen earned a bachelor’s degree in sociologyand anthropology from Olivet in 2001. While a student,she was a member of the golf and tennis teams.

Matt Wait is serving as an assistantwomen’s tennis coach. In addition tohis coaching duties, he is the directorof the Global Citizen Honors Program,d i rec to r o f j ud ic ia l a f fa i r s and anassistant professor of interdisciplinarystudies.

Wait, a 1999 graduate of Olivet, wasa four-year letterwinner on the men’s soccer team. He alsoearned a law degree from the Michigan State UniversityCollege of Law in May 2003.

(Eaton Rapids) and freshman Leanne Scudder (St. Joseph/Lakeshore) are also in the mix to fill out the rest of the startinglineup in both singles and doubles play.

Sophomore Mindy Timm (Three Rivers) along with first-year players Ashley Draheim (Swartz Creek) and KristenWolfolk (Lansing/Haslett) are also going to get opportunities.

SCHEDULEAfter opening the 2008 season at Kalamazoo College

March 1, Olivet travels to Hilton Head, S.C. for its annual springbreak trip. While there, the Comets play five matches in fivedays as well as get time to hone their skills outdoors in awarmer climate.

The rest of the schedule features the other seven MIAAmatches as well as non-conference matches against IndianaInstitute of Technology and Calumet College of St. Joseph(Ind.). The 2008 MIAA Championships wil l take placeApril 25-26 at Albion College.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events CenterThe 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the

existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used by thecollege and community for activities ranging from athletic events tocommencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track,locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’sbasketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practicesand competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programswill use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning.

A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer withMicrosoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988,he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development ofthree major releases of the product. In addition to leading the Windows 2000team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all parts of the system. Inrecognition of his significant contributions to the field, Cutler was awardedmembership in the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.
