From the District Executive

It has been another year of huge activity and development within the District. Your District Executivecontinue to work to support the vital work being done by those adults in uniform who work either directly orindirectly with our young people.

This has been Steve's first full year at the helm and we have been pleased to note the gradual build of histeam. Following the earlier consultations with the District, and in line with the feedback received, your DChas agreed with the District Executive to put aside part of our funds for the development of new experiencesfor our young people and our Scout Groups. The policy for this fund was discussed and circulated during theyear and funds became available for this current year. The message is quite clear. Funds are available forGroups and there is a quick acceptance process in place via the DC.

Following comments made at last year's AGM, the Executive debated the need for a District Levy. It is notour intention to generate funds un-necessarily and we felt that reserves were at a sufficient level to notimplement a levy in March. We will continue to monitor our expenditure plan to ensure that we balanceusing the funds we have for the benefit of our young people, whilst having in place a mechanism to ensurewe are meeting the District running costs.

Dave Walton is an important addition to Steve's team as District Explorer Scout Commissioner. The DistrictExecutive are the Executive for Explorers and we are concentrating help for Dave in ensuring he has supportfor the administrative and financial tasks.

In addition to Helen Hobbs who works tirelessly as secretary for the District, we are grateful to Mike Caponfor the work he undertakes as Treasurer. Thanks too for the support of John Gilliard and Ron Higgs on theExecutive, and also this year for Luke Jones who represents the 18-25 Age Group. We were also delighted togain the considerable experience of John Kirwan who has taken on the role of Appointments Chairman. Witha backdrop of more changes to the Appointments Process, John has recruited more members to his teamand brought our District close to being 'up to date' with new leaders and existing leader reviews. TheExecutive would benefit from another couple of members and particularly at least one from the younger agerange.

Can we also commend to you the work undertaken by our District President, George Peszynski, who workstirelessly to support individual groups and the wider District.

Finally can we once again pay tribute to those adults, both in and out of uniform, who give of their time sounselfishly to work with our young people.

Graham Cooper. District Chair.

Explorer Scout Section ReportDave Walton

This has been a very exciting year for Cabot District Explorer Scouts as ourmembership has increased significantly due to both the opening of a new Unitand word spreading about the opportunities that Explorer Scouting has to offer. In early 2009 a new ESU named Brockmead opened at the 4th Southmead andthe membership of the other three Units increased across the board. We havealso been joined by 4 new adult leaders. At the 2009 census Cabot District hada total of 84 Explorer Scouts including members of Units and Young Leaders, anincrease of 22% on last year. One of the most notable features of thismembership rise is that the number of female Explorers has risen substantiallywith the gender ratio heading towards 50: 50. Two of our Units have ExecutiveCommittees with the Explorer Scouts setting their own programme and takingthe lead in running several nights each term. This provides the Explorers withan opportunity to develop their self confidence and leadership skills in a safeenvironment.

Cabot Explorers have taken part in a range of adventurous activities this yearincluding, caving, skiing, shooting, archery, climbing, kayaking and gliding.Twenty Five Cabot Explorer Scouts also took part in Ten Tors this year andperformed admirably.

Cabot Explorers have taken part in a number of District, County andInternational events. 2009 saw the first Cabot District joint Explorer Scout campwhen twelve Explorers from two different Units camped together at the DistrictSt George's Day celebrations at Woodhouse Park. Brabazon ESU attended OneNight Stand which is an Avon County Event held in September at Chelwoodfeaturing live music, a disco, campfire and movies late into the night. The eventwas a talking point for some time afterwards for those who took part andhopefully this will encourage Explorers from the other three Units to attend thisyear. Cabot Explorers have also been a lot further afield with four taking part inlast August's trip to Uganda.

At present there is no Network in Cabot District but given the number of ex-Explorer Scouts and adult leaders in the 18-25 age range I am hoping, withsupport from County, to assist in re-starting the Cabot Network so that youngpeople within our District can continue to take part in Scouting past the age of18 without necessarily having to take an adult leadership appointment until theyare ready to do so.

The four Units we currently have are all fairly centrally located and over the nextyear I hope to recruit more adult leaders with a view to opening another Unit in

one of the more outlying areas of the District. My other key goal for the comingyear is to ensure that Young Leaders who are not members of a Unit have theopportunity to take part in the full range of activities that are available to therest of the District's Explorers.

fel/owshi +Fellowship ReportMargaret Harvey

The Scout Fellowship has enjoyed a busy and enjoyable year. Some of ourmembers are heavily involved with the Gang Show and some with the Children'sHospital Scout Group. We all enjoy our social times together going out for meals, playing Skittles, having speakers and quizzes.

Last year we held a Bring and Buy Sale to raise money for a District ExplorerScout, who was going to Uganda with other Scouts, to continue the work startedthere by Avon Scouts. The Bring and Buy was very successful. In May at ourA.G.M. she gave a very interesting talk on her experiences in Uganda.

We are once again looking forward to next year and its new challenges.

Beaver Scout Section ReportChris Gavriel

It has been another busy and successful year for the Beaver Scouts in the CabotDistrict. Since taking up the post of ADC Beavers back in November last year, Ihave been kept busy 'Beavering' away visiting the colonies, and getting to knowthe young people and their leaders. It has been a real pleasure to witnessfirsthand how Scouting within this section is being implemented on the ground, and how much fun the Beavers (and their leaders!) are gaining from taking partin the adventures of Scouting.

The colonies throughout the District have undertaken many exciting and variedactivities over the past year, which has allowed the Beavers to gain lots ofbadges, and find out more about their local communities and the world aroundthem. Activities have included trips out to fire stations, Bristol Blue Glassfactory (62nd), a Buddhist temple (77th), Clifton Cathedral and a Sikh Temple(26th). It seems the list is endless!

There have also been the District events that have taken place, which has beenan excellent way of getting the different colonies uniting together in the fun. There was a hugely successful Fun day back in March themed around the sensesof the body, which saw participation from 10 of the colonies around the District. The Beavers were able to do a whole host of things such as make shakers, tactile face pictures, a blindfold trail, and we even had a visit from Gus the guidedog and his owner, who showed the Beavers the different gadgets she had tomake her life that little bit easier. Many thanks to all the leaders who helpedwith this event.

There was the St George's Day promise renewal and activity day held atWoodhouse Park, where the Beavers made swords and shields, played on abouncy castle, took part in space hopper Jousting and did a treasure huntamongst other things. The Beavers also recently put on their 'creative hats' byhaving a junk modelling competition - my thanks to Steve Grant (227th) fororganising this event.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to all the Beaverleaders and their supporters for the sterling work they are doing within theBeaver Scout section. It is, of course, the first leg of a young person's journeythrough Scouting, and I have no doubt that you are making a really worthwhilecontribution to the development of the young people within your colonies. Yourcreativity and extraordinary commitment is truly appreciated, so once again, thank you on behalf of all our Beaver Scouts!
