18. This[this]가 가리키는 것 가 적절한 것 점? [1 ]

This is a very ancient article. This was often used in

palaces and great houses in the early Middle Ages. This was

then often of great size, covered with leather, and firm

enough to serve as a seat. But nowadays this has become

much smaller and stuffed with wool, hair, feathers, polyester

fiber, or even paper fragments. This may be used for sitting

or kneeling upon, or to soften the hardness of a chair or

couch. This can be used temporarily outside to soften a hard

ground.

Little children are passionate about almost everything they

see. In fact, ① they are passionate about seeing itself, and

feeling, and smelling, and hearing, and tasting, too. ② They

reach out for everything they can ― spiders, flowers, hands,

cats, wind, water, you, music, etc. ③They are natural

experimenters, explorers, and examiners. As time goes on,

④ they begin to make connections between things. One child,

seeing oil in a puddle of water, exclaimed, “Oh, look! A

dead rainbow!” They are so different from adults, who say,

“I know what that is,” and dismiss it. What ⑤ they are

really saying is, “I already know about that, and there’s

nothing more to know.”

The Kensington Opera House is due for a facelift. The

building was built in 1886. The Kensington Company, which

runs the theater, will start the $1.5 million construction

project. Improvements will include new seats, new safety

lighting and a new sound system. Part of the project will

include removing the old 19inchwide seats at the

Kensington Opera House on Monday. They will be replaced

with 23inchwide seats. This beautiful Victorian theater will

be closed throughout the summer and early fall. We are

looking forward to the new version of Kensington!

24. Do you know what the expression “playing possum”

means? A person who is playing possum is pretending to be

. The expression comes from the habit of the

opossum, a small animal native to the eastern United States.

Opossums have pointed noses, gray, furry bodies, a pocket

like a kangaroo, and long, hairless tails that they use for

holding tree branches. When an opossum feels threatened, it

rolls onto its back and lies perfectly still. People have long

thought that the opossum was trying to escape from danger.

But now scientists believe because of fear the animal

actually fainted.

We live in some type of shelter, whether it is an apartment,

a house, or a barn. This shelter protects us from rain, snow,

and other unfavorable elements. But undoubtedly, our

concerns for the same purpose extend well beyond our need

for shelter. We have locks on our doors and windows. We

keep a spare tire in our car and maintain health and auto

insurance. Our country supports national military forces;

towns and cities have police and fire departments. These

26. You are walking in a rain forest when you come across a

deep narrow valley. The valley is 10 meters deep, and 20

meters wide, and several kilometers long. You have a

6meter ladder, a pair of scissors, a box of matches, a

candle, an endless supply of rope, and several rocks. How

do you cross the valley? Most people don’t solve the

problem because they consider too many factors. They may

try to invent creative solutions using the ladder, the

scissors, the candle, and the matches. But the puzzle states

that you have an “endless supply of rope.” So you only have

to dump the rope into the valley until it is filled up and you

walk comfortably across. Sometimes in

32. Lately some pop music has been criticized for having badeffects on teens’ minds. For example, rap music is being

blamed for all the crimes in cities all over America. Rock

music is also being blamed for giving teens only dark images

and thoughts in their minds. Despite the public concerns on

their lyrics, rap and rock music actually give many teenagers

an outlet from their life problems. They can get away from

their boring daily life and just have time on their own.

Besides, why should pop music have any ‘message’ at all?

People don’t listen to music and analyze the lyrics

thoroughly at the same time. They simply listen and enjoy it.

36. 에 한 다 내용과 하는 것Sadie Hawkins Dance ?

In the United States, the Sadie Hawkins Dance is usually

a dancing party sponsored by a high school or a college.

The Sadie Hawkins Dance is named after a comic strip

character Sadie Hawkins. In the comic strip, November 13

was Sadie Hawkins day, when the unmarried women in a

village ran after the single men and married the ones they

caught. This idea came into real life by establishing dance

events to which the woman invited a man of her choosing,

instead of waiting for a man to ask her. It was also the

woman that paid for dinner, the dance tickets, and

everything else on the date. Schools usually schedule the

Sadie Hawkins Dance during November, or, during January or

February.

Elizabeth Barrett began writing poems when she was six

up in a beautiful country home in England. Elizabeth even

wrote the story of her life at the age of fourteen. She was

confident that she would be a famous writer some day. The

next year Elizabeth fell ill, and she spent a lot of time in

bed reading and writing. As an adult, she was often ill.

While lying in bed, she wrote volumes of poems and her

poetry became wellknown. Admiring her writing, Robert

Browning, who was a poet, visited her. The two writers fell

in love, married, and spent fifteen happy years together.

41. It’s 24 in the office and 32 outside. It takes a lot of℃ ℃

electricity to cool the entire building. Air flows in and out

of a building because of differences in air pressure. If

outside air flows into the building, it takes more energy to

cool down the inside air. Regular foot traffic in a large

office building can result in a lot of air leaks. That presents

a challenge for engineers: How do you allow people and

things to move in and out of a building while minimizing

unwanted air flow? The revolving door can be presented as

a solution for this problem. A revolving door isn’t airtight,

but it makes air pressure differences smaller. Every time

the door spins, some air will leave the building and some

will come in, but overall, much less passes.

simply to get to know him or her in person. However,

people’s possessions also can tell us even more about their

personalities than facetoface meetings or what their best

friends say about them. If you poke around in other people’s

rooms, offices, and medicine cabinets, you will realize that

their artifacts― their books, music, photos, and posters ―

serve as nonverbal cues as to who they are and what they

value. For example, you can guess someone’s hobby is

traveling by looking at his or her travel photos or assume

that someone with a lot of CDs likes music.

Most animals have been observed playing, and play

does seem to make them happy. But research has also

shown that play is a serious thing, too. In their playful

games, animals can learn about the need to live in

harmony with others. During play, they learn basic rules

that are acceptable to others — how hard they can bite,

how roughly they can interact, and how to resolve

conflicts. Scientists have discovered that play is also

necessary for brain development. For example, rodents

placed in environments with running wheels and other

play structures show greater abilities in problem solving

than rodents who don’t have such opportunities to play.

(A) The Turtle, however, didn’t give up. He challenged

the Rabbit again on a different race track. The Rabbit

accepted it. The Third Race started. The Rabbit soon

disappeared. The Rabbit kept on running as fast as

(a) he could. Suddenly, he came to a river. He was not

able to swim so he was forced to stop. After some time

the Turtle reached the river and started to swim. Within

no time (b) he crossed the river and moved towards the

finishing point while the Rabbit helplessly looked on.

(B) The story does not end here. The Rabbit and the

Turtle decided to run again. This time it was just

running and not a race. While running, until they reached

the river, the Rabbit put the Turtle on (c) his back.

Once they needed to cross the river, the Turtle put the

Rabbit on his back. Both of them reached the finishing

point in less time than ever. They learned that

. During the time they were

competing against one another, just one of them was

able to win after wasting a lot of time and energy.

(C) Remember the famous RabbitTurtle race? We all

know that at the end of the story the Rabbit was not

able to win the race against the Turtle. Well, this is

actually not the end of the story. After the race, the

Rabbit decided to have a race again. This time, (d) he

decided he would not take a nap. The race started and

soon the Rabbit was far away from the sight of the

Turtle. This time (e) he didn’t stop and defeated the

Turtle by a big margin.

(A) The moment Dr. Russel looked at Susan lying

gravely on the exam table, he knew the time had

arrived. He began gently, “The cancer is advanced and

there are no good options left to try.” “At first I was

really shocked. But after that, I thought it was a really

good way of handling a situation like that,” said Susan,

who now is making a “bucket list” — things to do before

she dies. Her top priority is getting her busy sons to

visit her often. She was actually relieved after she got

from her doctor. She is now

able to plan for a “good death,” such as making decisions

on how to enjoy her final days.

(B) Only onethird of terminally ill cancer patients in a

new study said their doctors had discussed endoflife

care. Surprisingly, the study found patients who had

these discussions were less depressed than those who

did not. They didn’t spend their final week in hospitals,

tied to machines. And their loved ones were more at

peace after they died. Still, most doctors fear to say it’s

the end. In reality, however, people really want

from doctors, because without

knowing what their options are, they feel abandoned and

lonely. In addition, from an ethical point of view,

patients ought to ‘know.’
