This 30th year is turning out to be very social with what is becoming a very full program of events and activities. As reported by Paul Newsome the Subaru 4WD club continues to keep good company at the fore with the long wine and nibbles tradition upheld at Green Head. It was a great weekend with lots of sun, snorkelling and a bit of off road but no fish!. Thank you for your support and company for the event. Also a thank you for Greg Reinikka for running the Fishing trip in January despite there only being one Subaru (mine) on the trip

Fiddles and Nibbles was very well attended as well with quite a few cars getting secondary battery cabling installed in preparation for those longer trips. We also had quite a few people who just came along for the nibbles and the company as well as a couple of potential new members. Thank you Jim and Christine for your hospitality and assistance in putting all this wire through the cars in unique and obscure ways!

We are still hoping to develop some more trip leaders who can lead us to new places, or even old places in a new way/time. Last weekend we had the trip to Moore river National Park, co-lead by David Peck and Jim Wilcox acting as mentor– both of whom have lead trips recently before. Perhaps if you do not want to just put your hand up for a trip why not call up one of the leaders for the upcoming trips to act as apprentice in planning the trip or doing the pre-trip We had our two visitors from the Fiddles and Nibbles as well as new members David and Trish McNamara in their, what was, nicely clean, pearlescent Outback. It was not quite the same at the end of the trip!

We have finally had some response from the Australian Four Wheel Drive Association regarding their Environmental/Community Service Awards 2009. They are seeking an entry in the near future. In line with the support given at the last meeting to our entry, we will go forward and make an entry for our work at Lochada which has been so admirably lead by Reg Woods over

the years. We have scheduled the last week/long weekend of September as the time we will be up there and doing our bit. It would be good if we could count on many members to be in attendance to help us to really push the project along. Reg is enquiring of DEC tasks that need to be done in addition to the completion of the signage about the properties. So mark the week/end into your Calendars as one not to be missed.!

Don’t forget to come along for the Britax presentation at this month’s meeting on car lighting options and enhancements. Next month we will have Keith Low’s slide show.

I am back in my hot seat. Talking of hot, as I write it is 2.30pm Sunday 28th March and unexpectedly I have some free time this afternoon on a mild 26c day (not hot). Unexpected as this morning I was enjoying the day with fellow subarusters on Dave Peck and Jim Wilcox’s Moore River trip. About 11.30 am I was recovering from getting bogged twice and happily looking forward to our lunch break when I noticed the tem-perature gauge was just about to burst through the extreme red part of the dial! After an inspection by those who know what they are doing under a car bonnet, I was sadly limping home with a hot radiator with no fans working. Hot was the operative word, or overheated to be tech-nical. But after nine maintenance-free, no problem fun trip years, I am not complaining, and after surgery will be back out there very quickly.

We had another productive March committee gathering and events are now planned for the second and even third quarter of the year, so you can plan well ahead. Listed below are some interesting and purely pleasurable trips which I hope will attract lots of interest and enthusias-tic participation:

Swan Valley – Sunday 17 May

This event has proved very popular and unfortunately all the seats have been taken.

The planning of the itinerary is underway and will undoubtedly include a few wineries plus a few eateries. The lunch venue is still to be looked into and a decision will be made at the next committee meeting. All participants will be sent details of menu’s and costs.

Keith will present a slide show summary of his and Jo’s 6 months travelling through the Kimberley, Top End, Gulf Country and Cape York during 2008.

Whether you’ve been there and want to reminisce, are thinking about it and want ideas and inspiration, or simply enjoy looking at great photos, this is not to be missed. See you there.

BBQ in the Park – Monday 27 April

Anzac day seems a perfect opportunity to have an Aussie BBQ lunch in a park. The park chosen is Beaton Park at the end of the The Es-planade in Dalkeith, UBD map 307 (enter off the Broadway in Craw-ley). It is usually quieter than the Matilda Bay BBQ’s so hopefully we will not have too long a wait.

Starting from 11.00 am with nibbles to share and lunch when we feel like it. After the meal I am suggesting that those who wish can ride off the calories on their bikes along the foreshore.

Easter 2009 – D’Entrecasteaux Na-tional Park

Plans for the Easter trip to the D’Entrecasteaux National Park on the south coast are well underway. The base for this trip will be the DEC hut at Yeagarup Lake, near the major sand dune system south west of Pemberton. This will make an excellent base from which to explore the south coast beaches between the Warren and Donnelly Rivers, the Yeagarup dunes themselves, and some of the beautiful areas in the nearby karri forest. We will also try and fit in a trip to Lake Jasper, and even a spot of salmon fishing for any one interested.

Where and When

Meet at the Gateway Shopping Centre (Kwinana Fwy & Beeliar Dve) at 8:30 am on 10 April 2009. Return by 7 pm on 13 April.

What to bring

Normal camping gear and food for 3 nights (tents optional due to avail-ability of hut), tyre gauge & compressor, sun screen, warm clothes, camera, CBs (anyone without a CB please advise me ASAP). It is a National Park so NO PETS please.

Charges

There are nominal charges for entry to the national park and for camp-ing, which will be approximately $50/couple. The Club will also be pay-ing a bond for use of the hut so it must be respected and looked after by all attendees.

Please note that due to healthy early nominations for the trip, and the need to pre-pay fees and bond to DEC, the cut-off date for interest is 20 March.

Price range for mains is typically around $15 to $20 per person. The cuisine is (unsurprisingly) Indian.

Mela is located at 428 William St Northbridge opposite the Perth mosque.

Sunday 10 May 2009

The plan is to wander through Julimar Conservation Park. Depending on the time taken to do this, we may also wander through the north side of Avon Valley National Park.Julimar Conservation Park, which lies be-tween Toodyay and Bindoon, comprises a 28,317 hectare tract of bush-land. It is managed by DEC.It is a hot spot for reintroduced native fauna. Species reintroduced in the last decade and now breeding prolifically include chuditch, woylies, quendas and brush-tailed possums.The 4WD’ing is expected to be easy.

Meet: Gingers Roadhouse (Gull Service Station), Great Northern Highway, Upper Swan.

Time: 9.15 for 9.30am start.

Bring: a full tank of petrol, food for lunch, water etc.

Come join those of us who would like to go on the Simpson Desert run with Simon but have to stay at home. The plan is to travel out with the Simpson Desert trekkers and join them at their first bush camp at Wheel Camp, just West of Coolgardie. On Sunday we will break camp and go into Kalgoorlie to look over the side of the Super Pit Look Out and take morning tea at one of the other attractions in Kalgoorlie.

Thereafter head north to Menzies for lunch and wander around the old buildings at Menzies. After that we head west to Lake Ballard for a mid afternoon stroll around the 51 Antony Gormley statues commissioned for the 2003 Perth International Arts Festival.

The sculptures stand scattered over 10 square kilometres of the salt lake.

After the sculptures the plan is to head down to Ullaring Rock and camp at the site where Sir Earnest Giles fought off a band of aborigines in 1875.

On the Monday we make our way back down to Coolgardie via the back road and then home, arriving in Perth possibly about 7pm.

It will be cold bush camping for two nights so bring everything and allow for cold early morning starts. Don’t forget your camera. Exact departure time and location has yet to be finalised – probably about 8am from the Midland Train station car park. If you are interested please send me an email and/or put your names down on the trip sheet at the meetings.

Green Head – Day 1 – Saturday 28 February 2009

Dave Peck (and his son Jason) and I met just after 9.00 at the Muchea playground on the corner of Station Street and the Brand Highway at Muchea. There was just the 2 of us. As we were being charged by the Green Head Caravan Park for a minimum of 3 nights, a number of other members had left on Friday. Others were travelling up separately on Saturday.

We stopped for morning tea at Badgingarra, then on to Green Head, arriving at about 11.30. The only real thing of interest on the way up was the wind farm – huge single blades rotating slowly, generating power solely from the wind. I think they’re great!

After lunch, I put up my tent. A few spots of rain fell, which wasn’t good, but it was only a brief passing shower. In hindsight, I should have waited until the shower had passed and then my tent would not have got wet at all. I’ve been caught like that before – you see a shower coming and you race to put up your tent before it arrives. You get your tent up, the shower arrives, your tent is soaked and then the shower passes on with no more rain to be seen. Next time I’ll wait!

At about 2.30, most of the group left the camp to explore. Our first stop was Grigson’s lookout. Grigson was a local farmer whose family has farmed locally for 3 generations. From the lookout, apart from ocean

views, you get can see a number of salt lakes. These salt lakes are part of a chain that runs along the coast for 45 kilometres. A few thousand years ago, when the sea level was much higher, the lakes were lagoons connected to the ocean.

then headed for North Head. To get to North Head, you take the road to the Sandy Cape Recreation Park. Both the Park and North Head are part of the Jurien Bay Marine Park. It didn’t take us long to get to the Park. From the local council’s website:

“Sandy Cape is a white beach in a small sheltered bay accessible by a good track off the Indian Ocean Road, just north of Jurien Bay.

Sandy Cape Recreation park is situated on Aus-tralia's Coral Coast on the cape between Ju-rien Bay and Green-head. A well con-structed track gives ac-cess to the park from the Indian Ocean Drive, 13km north of Jurien Bay.

The white sandy beaches offer a magnificent beachfront campsite with many activities to enjoy such as swimming, snorkelling, beach fishing or bush walking along the tracks provided through the native vegeta-tion. Licensed road vehicles are also permitted in the park and are al-lowed to use the beach between the high and low water line. If relaxing is more your thing then there’s plenty of room to lie on the beach and sunbake or stroll along the shoreline and admire the beautiful scenery.

Dogs are permitted in the park but must kept on a lead at all times and contained within your campsite at night. The speed limit in the park is 10km per hour and there is a full time ranger and caretaker on site at all times in the park.

Relax and enjoy your stay in one of nature’s pristine environments by the sea!”

The Sandy Cape Recreation Park is definitely worth keeping in mind as a future camping destination.

Then on to North Head. There were only 4 cars by then – Keith, John, Dave and I. The track was sandy, but didn’t present any problems. We passed a few nice views on the way and some nice camping spots.

When we arrived at the carpark (yes, there was actually a car park at the end of the sandy 4WD track), we found that we had the place to our-selves. It was well worth visiting. Apart from North Head itself, the Bartle monument (Robert Bartle died from a shark attack at North Head in 1967) and the concrete bun-

kers, all of which you can access, the water was great and we spent some time snorkelling.

It was a uneventful trip back to camp, except for some strange noises coming from Dave’s suspension. Thankfully, they sorted themselves out. We arrived back at camp at about 5.45, just in time for nibbles, a glass or two of wine and some good conversation – all very pleasant thank you very much!

Then a few snags cooked on the park BBQ for dinner, more conversa-tion and, before you knew it, people were heading off to bed. It had been a good day. Thanks to all for participating and to John for or-ganising the trip.

Stockyard Gully Feb 28th - Mar 2nd 2009 Having been the first to arrive at Greenhead Caravan Park, which was surprising as we were the only ones towing a caravan, we quickly set up our van for an enjoyable weekend.

We were closely followed by Wendy and Rob who went about setting up their ‘Taj Mahal’, Robs words not mine, in pretty gusty conditions, and then three more Subarus gradually turned up, including our trip leader John Cahill who informed us that the others would be coming the next morning.

By noon the next day the rest of our group had arrived and it was de-cided to go off and do some exploring, so five Foresters including our-selves headed up towards Jurien Bay and then turned left up into Grig-son’s Lookout, parking in the car park. We all then walked up to the Memorial to soak in and take pictures of the magnificent views across North Head and Jurien Bay itself.

We then proceeded back onto Indian Ocean Drive and then after doing a U-Turn turned left up to Sandy Cape and the free camping area where we found lots of people enjoying the hot day and the pristine swimming beach. Here we decided to split with the group and stay around the beach, while three others went off to do some 4WD driving.

After an enjoyable time paddling and swimming we then turned back to the caravan park.

On Sunday we commenced our trip to Stockyard Gully Caves proceed-ing along Indian Ocean Drive, through Leeman and turning right into Coolimba-Eanabba Rd and then about 5kms later we turned right into Pearsons Track. With John leading our convoy of seven Subaru’s we

picked our way along a sandy and rocky track. Along the way there was talk on the radios on whether we should have deflated tyres and certainly a few people com-mented on the rocks clattering underneath their vehicles. About halfway along our car

got bogged, probably due to not going fast enough through the sand and after a few unsuccessful attempts had to pile on the revs and re-verse out, at the cost of a lot of smoke and a burning clutch. Bit of a learning curve there!

We then reached the cave and proceeded on foot along the dried up creek bed to the entrance. We could see why stockmen had used it for shelter, dry and cool after the heat and flies. Also a torch was a necessity because without one you couldn't see your hand in front of your face!

After reaching the other end, we all took pictures, particularly of the huge bee nests on the rocky outcrop and then made our way back and out of the caves and back into our cars driving further along the track, the condi-tion of which became eas-ier until we made Cockle-shell Gully Rd. Then it was back onto the tarmac and back along Greenhead Rd to the caravan park.

We were also introduced to the Subaru 4wd club tradition of drinks and nib-bles late in the afternoon, of everybody taking a little something to eat and par-ticularly on Sunday night watching the sun go down.

One final note before we sign off; Derek and the Renegades wish to be remembered for their side trip to Leeman in which they spotted a huge Stingray approaching nearby swimmers. They described it as being at least a metre across. What we need is evidence Derek…….evidence.

Moore River National Park trip Sunday 29th March,

A view from a visitor, new to the black art of 4wheel driving

I had been to the nib-bles and Fiddles out-ing at Jim’s and every-body seemed very nice and relaxed and Moore Rivers sounded a bit of a dod-dle. Just drive up the

coast a bit and a romp on the beach at the point where the river meets the sea. Too easy, I thought. Too easy was right!

Ten cars set out from Jim’s at the appointed hour. After running along various sandy tracks we arrived at the sand playground, hill lined with thick soft sand. A few drivers made it look like child’s play up and down, but a little voice within said ‘No, don’t be stu-pid’ so I ignored the siren calls from other club members of ‘give it a go’.

I played with my new equipment, compressor and gauge and handed over driving to my son Jack. He made it look easy as we rolled like a pig at sea through soft sand drifts. When my turn came to take the reins I found it not as easy as it looked. My beautiful Forester had developed a mind of its own and wanted to go its own way. After several tips from helpful fellow travelers I was making good progress until a really spiteful rut stopped me in

my tracks, literally. After frantic reversing and digging out we were off again, only to be stopped again. Outback Dave, as the driver behind me in the convoy became known as, helped us get going again. After stops for morning tea and we were on the move again.

I was starting to enjoy the run now. I could not believe how the cars danced over the rough surfaces if the right speed could be conjured up. Most of the drivers were obvi-ously well-versed in this and the convoy made good time around the sandy course. A yobbo in a Nis-san Navara ute, with high pitched voice and limited vocabulary passed the time of day with us over channel 17 of the radio. This picture was taken by my son Jack

on his phone as I noticed the high voiced one driving straight at us!

As we enjoyed our ice creams at a cafe out in the middle of no-where at the end of the trip, I asked Dave the trip leader about club merchandise. I had noticed the flash yellow club shirts and Subaru club stickers and told him I would like to purchase the win-dow sticker that read I survived a day out with the Subaru 4wd drive club.

As Jack and I headed for home we had a few laughs about what we had learned that day and both of us spoke of the buzz of driv-ing the little car in the bush.

All in all, a memorable day for both of us. Thanks to all the helpful club members for their advice and friendship and loan of a radio and helping hands when needed.

4WD Association -

a) Because Alcoa is expanding its mines in the Lane Pool Reserve area and this expansion will involving blasting and noise, Lane Pool Reserve, which takes in Baden Powell and Icy Creek, will be closed temporarily for up to 2 years. b) The new DEC Parks and Visitors Service Co-Ordinator is James Ridley, who is also the Ranger for the Perth Hills District. His phone number is 9295 9136. c) Logue Brook Dam is open to boats. d) No Clubs interested in doing spots on 6PR. e) Association has given up special Association number plate licence – only 12 sold in the last 4 years.

f) Mark seeking names of members willing to do PR spots on short notice. g) National 4WD Council – Award Scheme. Also signs are going to be erected on CSR asking whether travellers have a permit. h) Keep Australia Beautiful Council has put forward a suggestion for an “Adopt a Spot” campaign. i) Durba Springs Dunny Project is going to be brought forward to April 6-21. j) AAS is now revised and approved and is waiting to be published. The standards are only intended to apply to professional groups. k) Agreed to donate $1,000.00 to the Victorian Bushfire appeal. l) Kaarakin (322 Mills Road East Gosnells) – all up and running and signing of the MOU will be on 14th March and invitations will be sent to Presidents, DEC, Ray Harris and Nick Underwood AAS, Rob Robson and representa-

General Business:

Discussion hold in if we should submit to the National 4wd environmental award- This will need a volunteer to prepare the submission. - General support to the idea was given.

Discussion regarding a couple currently doing a world tour in a Forester, Dave has left club contact details on their web site, along with a general invite to come to a meeting (and hopefully talk). General reminder to all attending to sign in.
