Finding a more complete set of on-campus golf facilities that surpasses whatPenn State has to offer is pretty difficult. With two 18-hole courses and anarray of sparkling new practice facilities, it is easy to see why Penn Stategolfers have the opportunity to develop their games. Penn State sits at thecenter of what may be the finest group of golf courses near any campus. TheUniversity’s Blue Course and White Course complex are tied for largest pub-lic golf facility in Pennsylvania. The University's Blue and White Courses,Toftrees Resort, Centre Hills Country Club, and Elks Country Club are con-veniently situated within 10 minutes of campus. Coach St. Pierre relates,“These facilities help us maintain our edge with other top programs and givesus a chance to host major championships.”

Penn State’s Blue and White courses have recently undergone renovationwith the majority of the changes occurring on the Blue Course, which playshost to the tournaments and championships that are hosted by the PennState golf programs. With the addition of new tee boxes, 600 yards wereadded to the Blue Course, bringing the total yardage to approximately 7150yards. Additionally, the championship course just finished undergoing amajor redesign to both the 7th & 8th holes. To stiffen the overall challenge, over 20 strategic bunkers were placed in the layout as well as three newwater hazards. The Big Ten Conference is well known for the outstandingcaliber of its university owned golf courses, and with these updates the PennState courses will sit proudly among the top in that group.

The Blue Course annually hosts Penn State’s Rutherford Invitational as wellas the Nittany Lion Invitational on the women’s side. The Blue Course hashosted a number of junior tournaments, including the Pennsylvania HighSchool Championship from 1982-2001, the PGA Junior Series as well asthe FCWT, giving junior golfers an opportunity to see State College as wellas the Nittany Lion Facilities.

Page 5: 2009-10 Penn State Women's Golf Media Guide

The White Course provides a challenging alternative to the newer Blue Course. Withholes dating back to 1922, the White Course will test even the most skilled player. Theolder course provides smaller crowned greens adding to the character and demand-ing a creative short game. The sculpted bunkering that was done in the 1920’s hasbeen photographed and studied by some of today’s top architects.

The Walker Clubhouse, which was recently renovated, offers a complete golf shop anda cafe that overlooks the course. The clubhouse also features a large seating area fortournament meetings and receptions.

The practice areas used by the Nittany Lions are the newest parts of the course. Theample grass range located at the opposite end of the public range was expanded andmade into a driving range that is only used by Penn State golfers, providing an areafor the Lions to practice just about any shot in the bag. The area has three tiered bluegrass practice areas, two ample fairway bunkers adjacent to the tees, as well as arolling fairway for players to work on un-even lies. A small pitching green and bunkerwere also put into place with the undulated fairway. This undulating fairway brings aunique quality to Penn State’s practice opportunities.

The other newest practice area for the Nittany Lions is a quiet one-acre short-gamefacility behind the 14th green. There are two large greens with several bunkers, level& un-level lies, up-hill & down-hill shots, and two different practice fairways of 50 and100 yards. One green is used for non-impact shots like putting and chipping, and thesecond with the two connected fairways for pitching, bunker play, and all types of cre-ative short game shots.

Page 6: 2009-10 Penn State Women's Golf Media Guide

The renovations don’t stop at the short-game facility and the driving range. A team room for the Nit-tany Lion golfers is under construction as well.

This facility includes a lockerroom for both the women’s and men’s teams, coaches offices, a playerlounge area and teaching room complete with a VH1 system for video taping. The state-of-the-art facility features heated stalls for hitting outdoors during inclement weather.

During the winter months, the golf team takes up residence in spacious Holuba Hall. Within the118,000-square-foot artificial turf practice area, players can work on the fine points of their entiregame. With a ceiling height of 75 feet, they can use every club in the bag and observe their full flightwith the use of low compression "Cayman" golf balls. These are the same golf balls that were usedat the PGA's 2000 Teaching & Coaching Summit. The field is brand new field turf with imitationgrass and subsurface.

Adding to an array of practice putting greens and a driving range, Penn State recently completedfive target greens on the range and a large short game practice area. The vast short game areaincludes bunkers and other features giving the players a chance to hone their chipping and bunker-play skills.

Head Coach Denise St. Pierre

Experience is the best teacher...

Denise St.Pierre is entering her 17th season as the Penn State head women’sgolf coach. St. Pierre draws from her experience as a collegiate golfer aswell as a PGA teaching professional to help her student-athletes reach theirfull potential.

In addition to coaching the Nittany Lions, St. Pierre has also coached ininternational competitions throughout her coaching career.

In August of 2004, St. Pierre helped coach the U.S. team at the World Uni-versity Games in Thailand where they won the gold medal. Penn State’sKatie Futcher captured the individual title in that event.

In June of 1999, St. Pierre was selected by the NGCA to coach the U.S.team at the U.S./Japan Collegiate Golf Championships in Chiba, Japan, where the Americans captured their fourth consecutive title.

In its February 2002 issue, Golf for Women magazine named St. Pierre toits “Top 50 Women PGA/LPGA Instructors” list.

St. Pierre has served as President of the National Golf Coaches Association(NGCA). While president, she led the membership in volunteer work inNew Orleans in relief of Hurricane Katrina. At the annual NGCA con-vention that had to be moved from New Orleans to Tahoe, Nevada, St.Pierre introduced an idea to the membership that called for as many golfprograms as possible around the country to conduct fundraisers to raisemoney for the NewOrleans Area Habitat for Humanity. Through the effortsof the Nittany Lion women’s golf team as well as those by more than 30other women’s golf programs around the country, the NGCA raised $60,000to build a home for a displaced family in New Orleans. The efforts of theNGCA culminated last June when St. Pierre and several of her colleaguestraveled to New Orleans and volunteered to help finish building the housethat they sponsored through the Habitat for Humanity.

Prior to the start of last year, St. Pierre served as the assistant coach of theUnited States women’s golf team at the World University Games held inTorino, Italy for the second time after also serving as the coach in 2004. Sheled the team to a gold medal for the second straight time as well.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., St. Pierre chose Penn State for its academic andathletic reputation. As a Nittany Lion herself, St. Pierre’s team won severalteam titles as well as qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

After her graduation in 1983, St. Pierre completed an apprenticeship withthe Professional Golfers Association (PGA) at the Innisbrook Resort in Tar-pon Springs, Fla. In 1985, she returned to the University as an assistant coachfor both the men’s and women’s golf teams under Mary Kennedy-Zierke.She earned 1991 Mid-Atlantic/East Region Coach-of-the-Year honors.

From 2000-2004, St. Pierre served as secretary for the National GolfCoaches Association, prior to becoming the president of the NGCA fol-lowing her time as secretary. St. Pierre has been a guest lecturer for the PGAteaching and coaching summit as well as the National Golf Foundation.

A Class A member of the PGA, the Nittany Lion coach has taught in NewYork and Florida and is currently the director of instruction at the PennState golf courses. During the winter, St. Pierre teaches a golf conditioningclass for the local community, as well as instructing health and human devel-opment classes at Penn State. She also serves as the director for the PennState summer golf schools, and co-directs five junior camps. In addition toall that, St. Pierre is the author of Golf Fundamentals, an instructional bookfor recreational players.

St. Pierre offers more than just experience to her athletes; she brings withher knowledge of the sport and familiarity with the University. She had avery successful career at Penn State and looks forward to more growth andsuccess for the Nittany Lion women. St. Pierre wants to provide life guid-ance as well as athletic guidance.

“It is about them being balanced and how we can encompass academics andpersonal growth in order for our players to reach their potential,” St. Pierresays.

Players face challenges both on and off the course that affect how they playtheir game. As a coach, she believes she must be aware of those factors inorder to help the player cope on the course.

“You have to know first what you want,” she adds. “I believe every player hasmore potential than they realize. It is my job to help draw that potential outof them.”

St. Pierre wants her players to graduate from the program not only bettergolfers but also better people.

“In order to uphold the Penn State tradition of academic and athletic excel-lence,” says St. Pierre, “we provide each player with a safe environment toplay the game at the highest level while balancing her time in the classroom.”

Every coach has a different strategy on how to run a team. Denise St. Pierre’sis not just centered around golf but around education and dreams.

“I try to be supportive of student-athletes in both their athletic and aca-demic endeavors while here at Penn State,” says the 1991 Mid-Atlantic/EastRegion Coach-of-the-Year.

She understands that golf is not her student-athletes’ entire life. Each stu-dent-athlete is also at Penn State to receive an education and a lifeexperience.

“My main job as a coach is to discuss what our [team’s] dreams and aspira-tions are while we’re here...my goals are to help them reach theirs...I am avehicle to allow my players to get where they want to go.”

She wants her players to improve themselves in all aspects of life- as a com-petitor, an athlete and a person- during their time at Penn State.

This Class A teaching professional hopes that her players can develop “usingmy background as a player...I can display the right attitude and the rightactions that I want them to follow.”

St. Pierre prepares her players for tournaments, both mentally and physi-cally. The most important thing for her is to have as much information abouta tournament, including climate, environment, grass, layout of the golfcourse and the competition.

Physically, she has her players practice the things that are most likely to occurat those sites.

“The more you know about the situation, the better you can prepare your-self both mentally and physically. The fewer the surprises, the moreconfident we can be,” says the Nittany Lion head coach.

STATE COLLEGE AREA SERVICES (AREA CODE 814)

Located among mountains and valleys in the exact geographic center ofthe Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Centre County thrives on its abil-ity to blend education with industry, technology, historic shopping

districts and farming communities.

The heart of the Centre Region is State College, a community featuring thebest that life has to offer, in education, commerce, culture and recreation.

This mixture of the cosmopolitan and pastoral works so well that to manythe Centre Region is known as “Happy Valley." The region is frequently rankednear the top of the charts by Money magazine’s “Best Places To Live" andRand McNally’s “Retirement Places Rated Guide." In the late 1980’s, Psy-chology Today called State College the least stressful place in the United States.

Centre County is home to The Pennsylvania State University, one of the finestteaching and research institutions in the land. Penn State’s impact is great, from the touring Broadway shows that visit campus to two recent additions:the Penn State Research Park and the 15,261-seat Bryce Jordan Center.

The ebb-and-flow of students and activity in State College creates a vitaldowntown that always is bustling, but this is especially so during home foot-ball weekends in the fall and the nationally-acclaimed Central PennsylvaniaFestival of the Arts every July.

Escape isn’t far away. Less than 20 minutes from campus are quiet towns andvillages with charms of their very own, as well as mountains, lakes and roar-ing streams and brooks.
