2009-10 PreviewYouth will be served in a big way for the 2009-10 South Dakota

State men’s swimming and diving team. The Jackrabbits welcome13 freshmen to a team that has improved its finish each of the lasttwo seasons in The Summit League.

One of the strengths of the team, according to head coach BradErickson, should be the distance freestyle events.

“We have a couple of freshmen in Tyler Smoragiewicz and KyleOchsner who are going to challenge some school records,” saidErickson, who is entering his 34th season as head coach and is thelongest tenured head coach at SDSU.

Senior James Motley, who is ineligble to compete the first semes-ter, also is expected to contribute in the distance events, after set-ting the school records last season in the 1,650 freestyle, as well asthe 200 butterfly during the last day of the Summit LeagueChampionships.

“I think that our butterfly events are also going to be good withthe same three guys, plus junior Jason Garder” Erickson said. Garderwas part of the school record 200 freestyle relay team last seasonat the conference championships.

The Jacks have potential to be good in the sprints according toErickson. Returners include junior John Bisson and sophomoreJeremy Yacevich

“Sprints are always kind of a tossup, because one- or two-tenthsof a second could get you from first to fifth place,” Erickson said. “We have some potential there.”

One area that the Jacks have not had much contribution in thepast few years is diving, with some of the men’s diving records dat-ing back nearly 35 years. SDSU went without a diver last season, but that will change with two freshmen: Brad Schoreit and redshirtCaleb Crevier.

Schoreit, who has been diving since he was five years old, is atwo-time Nebraska state champion and is expected to do very wellfor SDSU right away. Crevier joined the team last fall and “has real-ly developed” according to Erickson. “We are looking forward tohaving our divers contribute to the overall picture.”

The swimmers and divers will be very familiar with the Universityof South Dakota by the time the season ends as the Coyotes are anassociate member of the Summit League before becoming a full-fledged member in a couple of years. The Jacks will travel toVermillion on Dec. 10, host a triangular against USD and SaintLouis (Mo.) on Jan. 17 and go to Grand Forks, N.D., to take onNorth Dakota and USD on Jan. 30.

SDSU will host a second dual against Saint Louis on Jan. 17.

Other duals on the road will include Wisconsin-Green Bay on Nov.7 and the annual winter training trip to Florida from Jan 2-9.

SDSU will also take part in the Hawkeye Invitational on Nov. 20-22 and the Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 5-6.

The season wraps up in Indianapolis on Feb.18-20 for theSummit League Championships.

Erickson sees no reason why the Jacks should be able to improveon their fifth-place finish of last season.

“We feel that we have the talent on the men’s side that we canimprove a spot or two from last year’s finish.”

• SDSUSDSU Swimming & Diving Preview •2009-10 PreviewUnlike the men, the South Dakota State women’s swimming and

diving team has a plethora of experience at its disposal.Nine seniors, along with two juniors, make up a solid foundation

that helped the Jacks take home third at the Summit LeagueChampionships for the second year in a row and finish with a 5-3dual record.

One key member of that third place finish was Katie Budahl. TheUniversity of Minnesota transfer broke the school record in the 100and 200 breaststroke three separate times during the season. Shealso won nine individual races, including setting a SDSU andSummit League record in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.55) during thefinal day of the conference championships, and was a part of fourwinning medley relay teams.

She became the first Jackrabbit woman to win an individual con-ference title since Diane Kelsey won her third consecutive NorthCentral Conference 1,650 freestyle title in 1985.

Senior Emily Tschetter, a Brookings native, will also be a threat inthe breaststroke.

One swimmer that should contribute right away is AlexandraHoffman. Hoffman, a junior from Eureka, S.D., sat out last seasondue to obligations as Miss South Dakota.

As a sophomore, Hoffman set five individual school records andfinished as runner-up in both the 100-yard and 200-yard back-stroke events at The Summit League Championships. She alsoswam on four school-record relays during the 2007-08 season.

“I think she enjoyed her time away, but really missed the swim-ming part of it and is really excited about getting back into it,” saidhead coach Brad Erickson. “Looking at her so far this fall, she trainsso hard and she sets really lofty goals for herself. It won’t take longfor her to get back in the swing of things.”

Joining Hoffman in the backstroke will be Ellen Sinclair and fresh-man Lisa Newberger.

“The success that those three have had and the work ethic thatthey bring, I think that the freshmen look up to those three as lead-ers,” Erickson said. “Plus all of the seniors, because they all havegood qualities that make them good leaders as well.”

Seniors Christina Gerometta and Kayleigh Boucher will lead theway in the distance free events. Gerometta broke four freestylerecords at the Summit League Championships last season and has12 career wins. Boucher set a career best in the 200 and 1650freestyle at the same event. With a year more experience, Ericksonexpects those two to continue to improve.

“They have both set high goals for themselves that will be at thetop of the conference. We should have good quality as well as depthin those three events (Breast, Back, Distance).

Not all contributors will be upperclassmen as the Jacks have a fewincoming freshman that have the chance to make an impact rightaway. One such freshman is a Milbank native.

“We have what we feel is an unknown in Kylie Poel,” saidErickson.

Poel only swam on summer swim teams, so Erickson is excited tosee what she can do in a year-around program.

“In practice, she is amazing us almost everyday.”Anna Howard placed very high in the state meet in Nebraska in

freestyle events, but had a set back. Erickson said that the fresh-man is coming along after being in a car accident that injured herback. “She is still not where she would like to be obviously, but shehas the potential to be a very good sprinter for us.”

Freshman Alyson Twenge will add depth at the diving position asErickson is expecting her to step up and do some good things.

Sasha Porter, a senior diver from Alaska, got off to a quick startlast season as she broke her own school record in 3-meter divingtallying 226.6 points at the season opening triangular againstWestern Illinois and Iowa State. As a sophomore, Porter broke theschool record in the same event that stood for 25 years.

Every single Jackrabbit swimming and diving record on thewomen’s side had fallen in the last two year, but Erickson says thatthey are not done yet.

“It’s amazing that every year the past three or four years we havehad between 16 and 20 school records be broken between the menand woman. You just wonder how long that can continue. I thinkthat as we recruit better and better athletes as we get a better rep-utation, I don’t see why those records can’t continue to fall.”

The season begins Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at the HPER Center Poolwith the first of five home duals against North Dakota. The Jackshost Iowa State on Oct. 31st, followed by a triangular againstNorthern Iowa and Northern Colorado on Nov. 14th. They close outtheir home schedule by hosting South Dakota and St. Louis on Jan.16th along with a dual against St. Louis on the 17th.

SDSU hits the road beginning on Nov. 7th with back-to-backduals against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Jacks then travel toVermillion to take on USD on Dec. 10th followed by a dual vs.Nebraska on Dec. 12th.

Other duals on the road will include the annual winter trainingtrip from Jan 2-9 and a triangular in Grand Forks against NorthDakota and South Dakota on Jan. 30.

SDSU will also take part in the Husker Invitational on Nov. 19-22and the Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 5-6.

• About SDSU •About SDSU •With a record enrollment of 12,376

students in the fall of 2009, South Dakota StateUniversity is the state’s largest institution ofhigher education.EARLY HISTORY

Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorizedin 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assemblyand serves as the state’s land-grant institution.Territorial Council member John O’BrienScobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary forBrookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricul-tural College for his city.

Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in thefall of 1884 because the president, George Lil-ley, was willing to advance $500 — one-thirdof his salary — to finish three rooms in the newCentral Building.

In 1887, the Agricultural Experiment Stationwas established under the federal Hatch Act andlinked to the University to conduct research thatconcerned agriculture and the home. The Coop-erative Extension Service was added in 1914through the Smith-Lever Act.

During the first year of operation, onlypreparatory classes were held. College classesstarted in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshmanand 61 preparatory students. Growth was slowand erratic for many years, but by the turn ofthe 20th century there were 242 students.

By 1990, enrollment topped more than9,000 students. Today, students from all 50states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU.

More than 67,000 degrees have beengranted since the college was chartered in1881.

COLLEGES ESTABLISHEDThe structure of the college became more

complex as enrollments increased. The first ninechairs of instruction established in 1884 in-cluded agriculture, science, mathematics, Eng-

lish, modern languages, military tactics, veteri-nary science, practical business, political anddomestic economy, and music.

By 1907, the year the name of the institutionwas changed to South Dakota State College ofAgriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22departments on campus.

In 1964, when “State College” was renamedSouth Dakota State University, there were sixcolleges; today degrees are offered throughthese eight colleges:

• Agricultural and Biological Sciences• Arts and Science• Education and Counseling• Engineering• Family and Consumer Sciences• General Registration• Nursing• Pharmacy• Graduate SchoolSDSU also offers degree programs through

the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening,RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are co-ordinated through the Office of Academic Affairsand Outreach.
