From its humble beginning in 1872 with 132 students and two programs of study, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech, has evolved into a comprehensive university of national and international prominence. The late Margaret Soulen Gilbert ‘89 (pictured with family) began the H2Okies’ tradition of excellence in 1989, claiming All-American (HM) honors for both the 100 and 200 backstroke events and being named the Metro Conference Swimmer of the Year. As the !rst All-American for the H2Okies, Margaret Soulen Gilbert’s impact also echoed through time as she would later be inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Sara Smith ‘09 (above) continued this tradition of high merit, racking up numerous ACC titles and All-American honors of her own, while also being named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year on two occasions. Alongside the many honors bestowed upon Smith throughout her career, she eventually became the fastest women’s swimmer in the history of the ACC.

Kaan Tayla ‘08 (below) was another H2Okie legend. Tayla, a multiple-time ACC champion, became the H2Okies’ !rst-ever Olympian, competing in two Olympic Games (Athens ‘04 & Beijing ‘08) and a World Championship (Rome ’09).

H2Okies’ Home in ProgressThe Virginia Tech Hokies

swimming and diving program will soon be making waves a t i t s new home i n t he Christiansburg Aquatic Center.The faci l i ty is a 50-meter competition pool to promote and suppor t compet i t i ve swimming at all age levels within the region.Separate s e a t i n g fo r c o m p e t i t i ve swimming and diving events, including second-level seating, was recently added, allowing the facility to be capable of

hosting the Atlantic Coast Conference championships and other national meets.

The Hokies also have a training facility on campus. War Memorial Pool, located just off the campus Drill Field in War Memorial Gym, is one of Virginia Tech’s swimming and diving facilites The complex includes a 25-yard pool with eight lanes and a diving well. The movable bulkhead which separates the pool from the diving well can be adjusted to lengthen the pool to 25 meters.

Complete with underwater windows and sound system, the facility is also equipped with the Colorado Electronic Timing System and scoreboard. A 12-line readout scoreboard was installed for swimming, as well as a three-line scoreboard for diving.

The diving well is made up of two one-meter boards, a three-meter board and a five-meter platform.

The pool has served as the site for two Virginia State Championship meets and one Metro Conference Championship.

War Memorial Gym itself houses numerous other facilities including saunas, weight rooms, racquetball courts and six basketball courts. The Hokies also have the use of other equipment such as power-racks for strength swimming and VASA trainers, VASA climbers and bicycles for dry land. There is also a full dryland room off deck for dryland exercises for swimming and diving.

The H2Okie men posted consecutive fifth-place finishes at the ACC Championships in 2008 and 2009. Skinner has many talented returners back for the new campaign, including NCAA qualifiers Mikey McDonald and Charlie Higgins, in addition to 11 freshmen who can make an immediate impact in the ACC. The H2Okie men are expected to improve upon last year’s finish and have high expectations for the 2009-10 season.

SprintJuniors Stephen Hawkins and Rich Ulatowski

return as key leaders in the sprint free in the 2009-10 season after scoring po in ts a t the ACC Championships with top finishes in the 50 free. Seniors Andrew Rogers and Ch ip Hughes , along with sophomore Charlie Higgins, are a l s o e x p e r i e n c e d returners. Sophomore Greg Morgan will see action in the sprint and

mid-range freestyle events. Freshmen Karl Botha, who broke the British record in the 50 free, Adam Skipper, Trevor Carr and Gregory Mahon will also provide immediate speed for the H2Okie sprint crew.

FreestyleThe H2Okies return many talented swimmers

in the freestyle. Blake Trabuchi-Downey, who had an outstanding freshman campaign, will rejoin Bryan Uncur, Chip Hughes and Stephen Hawkins in the mid-range freestyle events. Hawkins and Ulatowski finished eighth and 14th, respectively, in the 100 free, while Uncur placed 12th and Trabuchi-Downey earned 14th in the 1650 free at the ACC Championships. Hawkins also took seventh in the 50 free. To add to the plethora of returning experience, Phil LaRosa, Caglar Gokbulut and Griffin Lutterbein will also be expected to score points, and will be complemented by newcomers Alex Lutterbein and Ben Munster. All will provide depth and stability to the distance freestyle crew.

Individual MedleySchool-record holder Daniel Flynn will look

to build upon last year’s performance in the IM

events, after etching his name in the record books in the 200 IM. Nevin Cook and Scott Harkins will join Flynn in the 200 IM, coupled with newcomers Tom Sheranek and Greg Mahon in the short IM events. In the 400 IM, Sheranek, Phil LaRosa and Alex Lutterbein will be key members of the distance medley squad.

BackstrokeSophomore school-record holder Charlie

Higgins (100 back, 200 back) anchors a very strong backstroke crew, which also includes 2009 ACC Championships finalist Trey Stewart. Junior Ryne Francis also returns with valuable experience to add crucial depth and speed. Newcomers Tom Sheranek and Michael Hallock will also be called upon to compete in the backstroke.

ButterflyCore returners Trey Stewart, Blake Trabuchi-

Downey and Matt Baumler, who finished fourth, eighth and 13th, respectively, at the ACC Championships and earned points for the H2Okies, will take the lead in the butterfly. Newcomers Karl Botha and Greg Mahon will also be significant contributors in the fly and potentially reach the NCAA Championship level. Botha represented Great Britain in the 2007 European Youth Olympic Festival in the 100 fly while Mahon was an All-American Individual Pennsylvania State Champ in the 200 IM and 100 fly. Freshman Mason Wilcox, who swam for the renowned Coast Guard Blue Dolphins club team, will also complement the H2Okies in the butterfly.

BreaststrokeSenior standouts Jonathan Huss and Scott

Harkins will anchor a talented returning breast-stroke crew this season. Huss placed fourth in the 100 breast and 10th in the 200 breast at the ACC Championships, while Harkins collected respective 12th- and 13th-place finishes in the events. Returners Nevin Cook, Daniel Flynn and Rich Ulatowski will also be important competi-tors, all having seen action at championships last year. Freshmen Mason Wilcox and Adam Skip-per will compete with high expectations as well.

DivingMikey McDonald returns for his senior cam-

paign to add to his astonishing resume of accom-plishments, earning Honorable Mention All-Amer-

ica honors for his 14th- and 15th-place finishes at the NCAA Championships in the one- and three-meter events, respectively. He also posted three

top-five finishes at the ACC Championships. Junior Daniel Martin, who finished eighth in the platform, 12th in the one-meter and 16th in the three-meter at conference champi-onships, will comple-ment McDonald as an experienced returnee who scored in all three diving events last year. Two highly talented

freshman divers, Zach Patteson and Logan Shin-holser, will join the squad. Shinholser was a Junior National finalist and a Senior National qualifier in the platform.

The H2Okie women bring back several key competitors from last year’s ACC and NCAA Championship events. In 2009, the women topped their previous fourth-place finish and totaled 451 points to claim the third-place spot at the ACC Championships. Though they have significant roles to fill with the loss of Sara Smith, Megan Newell and Jordan McHorney, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, H2Okie head coach Ned Skinner believes the returning 21 athletes will provide leadership and help the very talented incoming class reach their full potential and once again be a major threat in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Sprint Losing All-American Sara Smith will be a ma-

jor factor to address in the sprint free events for the H2Okies. Junior Steffi Drechsel, who is com-ing off fresh second-place ACC finishes in the

400 medley and 400 free relays, and a third-place finish in the 200 free relay, will take on a key leadership role. Captain Kelly deMar-rais finished seventh in the 200 free last year and will look to carry over her success to her senior season. Return-ers Emily Ferguson,

Kaleigh Gomes and Morgan Allen will provide ad-ditional experience and depth to the sprints units. Freshmen Lindzi Smith, Addie Carne and Sarah Ault will also have opportunities to compete as part of a traditionally strong sprint freestyle group.

FreestyleReturners Erika Hajnal, Kelly deMarrais and

Jace Howanitz offer experience, speed and power in the 200 freestyles, after earning valuable points at the ACC Championships last season. Hajnal placed second in the 500 free and third in the 1650 free, setting school records in both events. Many returners will look to complement Hajnal in the distance free events, including deMarrais, Sara Shapiro and Alexandra Tomasky. Lauren Rit-ter, who placed 11th in the 1650 free, also returns for the distance events. Freshmen Addie Carne, Laura Simon and 6’3” Becky Flora will compete in the mid-range freestyle and distance events for the Lady H2Okies in their first years.

Individual Medley In the IM events, sophomore Jace Howanitz,

who competed at the Olympic Trials one year ago and scored points at last year’s Championships, and Katie Priess are expected to be key leaders. Senior Abby Barney, who also competes in the butterfly, will provide experience and look to be a leader for the young group. Sophomores Paige Ayers and Emily Winland and in-state freshman Meaghan Holloway are also expected to contrib-ute. In the 400 IM, NCAA qualifier and school re-cord-holder, Erika Hajnal, and newcomers Laura Simon and Keri Sink will look to make the relay crew as strong as any in the ACC.

Junior Lauren Haley will of-fer additional depth after a breakout sophomore season, and freshmen Dana Kalnins and Sarah Ault will also complement the squad in action.

Butterfly

Senior Abby Barney and junior Kaleigh Gomes will anchor a strong butterfly crew, which lost pow-erful seniors Sara Smith and Megan Newell last year. Sophomore Erika Hajnal and newcomers Ka-tie Steeves, Lindzi Smith and Meaghan Holloway will also look to make a splash in the butterfly.

BreaststrokeSeniors Sarah Losinger and Jessica Earl, who

both helped the medley relay teams to second-place finishes at the ACC Championships, return for their final season as leaders of a traditionally strong breaststroke crew. Losinger also posted a seventh-place finish in the 100 breast and a ninth-place finish in the 200 breast at championships. Joining Losinger and Earl will be sophomores Emily Winland, Katie Priess and Paige Ayres, who all improved greatly throughout the course of their freshmen seasons. A duo of newcomers, Keri Sink and Meaghan Holloway, can also provide an im-mediate spark in the stroke.

DiversThe women’s squad returns five divers for the

2009-10 campaign and welcomes two freshmen. Natalie West, Sarah Milton and Cara Murnan return after all scoring points in last year’s ACC Championships. West took 10th in the one-meter and 12th in the three-meter, leading all H2Okies in those events and earning her first-career points. Milton, who holds the school-record in the three-meter, placed 12th in the platform and 15th in the three-meter and also helped the H2Okie squad by scoring points in all three events at champion-ships. Murnan led the H2Okies in the platform with a fifth-place finish and placed 16th in the three-meter. Julia Bradford and Andrea Sawchuk also return with high expectations from diving coach Ron Piemonte. Sara Mokhtari and Carissa San-tora hope to make an impact as new additions to the team. Santora comes in as the New Jersey State High School Champion as well as an AAU National Champion in the three-meter. Mokhtari was an eighth-place finalist at the Spring Senior National Championships in the platform.

The 2009-10 season marks the 12th year at the helm of the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams for head coach Ned Skinner. The men’s squad has registered a 70-44 record during his tenure, while the women have posted a 90-28 mark. Skinner brings back a talented group that has continued to impress in their four years competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Skinner’s incoming recruiting class has been highly touted by CollegeSwimming.com, one of the premier sites covering the sport. For the second straight year, the men’s class has been nationally ranked, this time ranking 20th, capturing six of the state’s top-20 recruits. The women’s class was ranked 14th in the country, marking the first time both programs have had top-20 recruiting classes in the same year.

Both the men’s and women’s teams continued to make their mark in Blacksburg in the 2008-09 campaign, combining to set 30 new school-records and posting new times in each relay event. The men posted a 7-1 record while the women finished 6-1. Skinner and his staff sent six swimmers and one diver to the NCAA Championships, earning All-American Honorable Mentions in the 400 free relay, the 50 free, 1650 free and one- and three-meter

diving events. He coached Erika Hajnal to become the Hokies’ first All-American in distance events, while shattering four school records. She recently represented Hungary at the 25th Universidad World University Games in Serbia over the summer and earned two top-10 finishes.

The 2008-09 2009 Hokies also excelled within the ACC, losing only to in-state rival, Virginia, over the course of the season. Tech took the top spot in the women’s 50 and 100 free at championships, as Sara Smith conquered gold medals in both events. The Hokies also saw silver medals in five events (three of them relays) and finished third in six events.

In 2008, both teams set school records for wins in a season. On the men’s side, Tech had two more than the previous record set in 1998 and 2007, with 12, while the women topped the 1998 record of 12, posting 14 wins in competition. In the ACC, the Hokie men closed out 2008 with a fifth-place finish and the women registered a fourth-place finish for the third straight season. The teams combined to break 14 individual and five relay school records, with the women setting two ACC records in the process. The Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association awarded the women with a No. 25 ranking at the end of the season. The men touched in at No. 28.

Skinner has coached Tech’s three first-team All-Americans in former Hokie swimmer Jessica Botzum (2005, 2007, 2008), Sara Smith (2007) and Gus Calado (2006). The Worthington, Ohio, native coached the Hokies first two-time ACC Swimmer of the Year in Botzum. Several other swimmers at Tech have been named honorable mention All-Americans the past five seasons as well.

Throughout his tenure, Skinner has also coached a handful of ACC individual and relay champions in the school’s five seasons in the conference. The list includes Botzum, Smith, Scott Beard and the two freestyle relay teams who swam to conference titles in 2007. Meanwhile, former Hokie swimmers Calado, Mason Walsh, Kaan Taylor, Scott Beard and Sara Smith have captured a title since Tech

has competed in the ACC.In Tech’s inaugural campaign in the ACC,

Skinner led the men’s and women’s teams to fifth and seventh place finishes, respectively. Botzum scored a fifth-place finish in that year’s NCAA championships to become Tech’s first true All-American.

The Hokies’ first year in the BIG EAST, 2001, Skinner led the women to a second-place finish, while the men placed third. In 2003, the men placed second in the conference with the women touching in at fourth place. After his successful showing, Skinner was named the BIG EAST Men’s Coach of the Year, while Hokie Kevin Furlong was named the Outstanding Men’s Swimmer that same season. Both Tech squads finished third at the 2004 BIG EAST championships. Skinner was named Co-Coach of the Year for the men, while Calado garnered the Outstanding Men’s

Swimmer Award.Each of the first two years as head coach

of the Hokie swimming and diving squads, Skinner was named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Coach of the Year, and led the women to two Atlantic 10 championships, and the men to their first conference title in 2000.

In the off-season, Skinner directs the Fighting Gobbler Swim Camp, two one-week swim camps held at Virginia Tech. He founded the camp in 2001.

Skinner came to the Hokies after serving four years as the director of competitive

swimming at the College of William & Mary. In his last season, he coached the Tribe women to a second place finish at the ECACs, while the men came in fourth out of 40 teams. Skinner was named ECAC Coach of the Year. The women’s team finished in the top 12 at the ECAC event during each of Skinner’s four seasons.During Skinner’s tenure, both the men’s and women’s squads were named Academic All-America Teams four straight years.

Before his stint at William & Mary, Skinner was the head coach and aquatics director at Central Connecticut State University for four seasons.

A 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University, Skinner was captain of the 1988 squad that captured the SEC championship. He graduated from LSU with a bachelor of arts in advertising and a split minor in marketing and economics.

Skinner earned his master of science in athletic administration at Ohio University while serving the swim team as a graduate assistant and helping guide the women’s team to the 1990 MAC title.

On the non-collegiate level, Skinner founded, directed and coached the Central Connecticut Aquatics team, a 75-member team of children ages 7 to 17. He also served as the head swim coach for the Kingsmill Swim Team in Williamsburg.

Skinner is married to the former Allison Cox, a lawyer and alumna of Virginia Tech, who currently works in the chambers of the United States District Judge David A. Faber. They have a 5-year-old daughter, Samantha, and an 18-month-old son, Jack. A native of Wor thington, Ohio, Skinner received his doctorate in education curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech in May of 2004.

The Hokies welcome head diving coach Ron Piemonte back for his fourth season in Blacksburg. Piemonte brings over 30 years of diving and coaching experience, spanning throughout all levels of the sport. His impressive resume as a coach has brought him national and international recognition as one of the top coaches in the United

States. He brings in several highly touted recruits for the 2009-2010 season.

Under Piemonte’s guidance, diver Mikey McDonald became the first Hokie diver ever to qualify for the NCAA Championships while registering three top-20 finishes at the

competition in 2008 and earning Honorable Mention All-America status in the one-meter and platform events. McDonald returned to the Championships in 2009, posting two top-15 finishes and collecting Honorable Mention All-America status for the second-straight year, this time in the one- and three-meter events.

Piemonte also coached McDonald to 10 individual titles throughout the season, including seven three-meter titles. McDonald broke the War Memorial Pool record in the one-meter that he set in 2007 and set a new record in the platform.

In 2005, Piemonte was voted the Most Outstanding Age Group Diving Coach in the United States. Prior to joining Tech, he spent five seasons at Moss Farms Diving, where he produced six different East National Champions, two YMCA National Champions, three different high school state champions, as well as three different divers who represented the United States in international competitions – one of whom was a bronze medalist on platform in the Junior Pan-Am Championships in Belem, Brazil. Besides coaching, for the last four years Ron has been the Vice President in charge of junior diving for USA Diving. For the last seven years he has been an instructor for coaches in safety certification and in all levels of educating and certifying coaches in belt spotting over trampoline, dryboard, and water.

Piemonte served ten years at the Tualatin Hills Dive Club in Beaverton, Ore., where his divers attained a high level of achievement. There he coached many junior national finalists, senior national qualifiers and finalists, junior and senior national team members who represented the United States in international competitions, two junior national champions, three Junior World Championship qualifiers (one bronze medalist) and an Olympic Trials finalist in 2000 on platform.

Piemonte was recognized as the Region 10 Coach of the Year and Zone D Coach of the Year in 1999. He is a six-time U.S. National Team

coach and was ranked as one of the top-10 Junior Olympic coaches in the country by the International Olympic Committee of U.S. Diving.

Prior to his stint in Oregon, Piemonte split six seasons of coaching between Phoenix, Ariz., and Albuquerque, N.M. In Albuquerque, he was the head coach for men and women at the University of New Mexico while running an age group team of about 20 divers. Meanwhile, in Phoenix, he developed a very strong club program that consistently had both junior and senior national qualifiers and finalists.

As a diver, Piemonte competed at the national level from 1974 to 1985. As an athlete at Arizona State University, he was a Pac-10 champion, runner up and NCAA finalist. One of the highlights of his career was being able to train under the Japanese Olympic coach during his entire senior year of college.

Piemonte has been married for 24 years to wife, Tina, and has three children: Rachele, Leah and Ronnie. His oldest daughter Rachele is a sophomore at Virginia Tech and is in the honors program majoring in chemistry and biochemistry. Leah and Ronnie are both highly ranked divers and compete at the junior national level of U.S. Diving.

Holloway, a 2001 graduate of North Carolina State University, earned his degree in parks, recreation and tourism management. He was the commencement speaker for the College of Natural Resources in the spring of 2001. Upon his graduation from NC State, he earned his master’s in education from Virginia

Tech in the summer of 2007.As a member of the NC State swimming

and diving team, Holloway made the All-ACC team from 1998-2001, becoming both an ACC champion and an ACC record-holder. Announced to the ACC 50th anniversary men’s swimming and diving team in 2002, Holloway was a five-time All-American and a two-time Academic All-American. He was ranked internationally in the backstroke events and an was an Olympic Trials qualifier. Holloway still holds three Wolfpack records.

Prior to joining Tech, Holloway served as an assistant coach at The University of the South from 2003-04. During his tenure, Holloway coached All-American Matthew Martelli, while his teams set four school records and touched in with seven individual titles.

Holloway is a native of Baton Rouge, La. He is married to the former Mary Mittendorf, who was also a collegiate swimmer. They have a 4-year-old daughter, Blythe Marie, and a 2-year-old son, Ethan Robert.

The coaching staff welcomes Danielle Quarry for her first season as an assistant coach with the H2Okie swimming and diving program. Quarry comes to Blacksburg after graduating from Southern Illinois University in 2009 with a bachelor of social work.

As a swimmer at Southern Illinois, Quarry was a backstroke and individual medley specialist and was a four-time MVC Championship finalist and a two-time all conference selection. She was

a team captain her senior season and a student-athlete scholar in 2008.

Prior to coming to Blacksburg, Quarry spent two years as the head coach and one year as an assistant coach of the Valley Swim Team in Colorado Springs, Colo. She helped guide the team to the Southern State Championships all three years.

A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Quarry is a graduate of Manitou Springs High School in 2005.

Danny White is in his third year working in the Office of Student Life within the Virginia Tech Athletic Department. White has been involved with the H2Okies for the past two years through helping with Hokie swim camps and assisting the coaching staff on the pool deck, and will take on more responsibilities this year as a volunteer assistant coach. White holds a bachelors degree in finance from the University of South Carolina and received his masters degree in education from Virginia Tech in 2008. He was a member of South Carolina’s men’s swim team, and served as team captain his senior year in 2001. He and his wife, Meredith, reside in Blacksburg.

Joey Peterson joins the H2Okie program as a graduate assistant coach, after having spent two years at his alma mater, William & Mary, as an assistant coach. While with the Tribe, Peterson assisted with all aspects of the swimming program.

Peterson was a butterfly and individual medley specialist, advancing to the consolation finals at the CAA Championships four times

during his career. While team captain in 2006-07, Peterson helped to lead the Tribe to its first winning season in eight years, 6-3-1 (4-2-1 CAA), and post a fourth-place finish at the CAA Championships.

A native of Willamsburg and a graduate of Lafayette High School, Peterson earned his bachelor’s of science in neuroscience from William & Mary in May of 2007.

Tom Williams returns for his second season with the H2Okies. Prior to coming to Blacksburg, Williams spent one season as a volunteer coach at Wittenberg University in 2005-2006 and two seasons as a volunteer coach at the University of Tennessee from 1998-2000. Williams swam at the University of Tennessee from 1994-1998. He earned both his bachelors degree (1999) and masters degree (2001) from Tennessee in forestry/wood utilization. Williams also works full-time as the Campus Director for Athletes in Action at Virginia Tech. He runs an eight-week Altitude Training Swim Project each summer with Athletes in Action.

H2Okies Set 30 Top-Times Throughout 2008-09

Refer to the Record BookThe Virginia Tech swimming and diving

program has maintained a strong and lasting tradition of winning and personal development. The 2008-09 campaign was no different, as the men’s squad posted a 7-1 record and the women finished 6-1. Both teams lost only to the 12th-ranked (men’s) and 19th-ranked (women’s) Virginia teams. The H2Okies set a combined total of 30 new school records throughout the season, six of them at their home facility, War Memorial Pool. The men saw 13 school records, setting new times in each different relay event. Likewise, the women broke 17 records and also recorded top times in each relay event. Senior Sara Smith, who was an All-American in 2008, also left an indelible mark on the program, recording two school and ACC records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

NCAA Championships The H2Okies had seven athletes qualify

for the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. Mikey McDonald, the only qualifying diver, posted three top-25 finishes at the championships, earning All-America Honorable Mention. McDonald finished 14th in the country in the one-meter (341.15), 15th in the three-meter (371.50) and 23rd in the platform (293.0). Charlie Higgins also qualified from the men’s squad, placing 20th in the 100 backstroke and 33rd in the 200 backstroke. The men finished 36th overall with 4.5 points, one spot better than their 2008 finish.

For the women, Steffi Drechsel, Megan Newell, Jordan McHorney and Sara Smith competed in the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay, posting three top-20 finishes and earning All-America Honorable Mention for their 15th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Smith and Drechsel also swam in the 100 freestyle, as Smith finished 20th and Drechsel placed 51st. Smith also placed 11th in the 50 freestyle, earning All-America honors.

Freshman Erika Hajnal, who joined Tech in the middle of the season, placed 13th in the nation in the 1650 free and 22nd in the 400 IM, and currently holds school records in both strokes. Newell placed 27th in the 100 butterfly, while Drechsel and McHorney placed 46th and 60th, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. The women finished 34th overall with 13.5 points.

ACC Men’s ChampionshipsThe men posted a fifth-place finish at the

ACC Championships for the second-consecutive

year, scoring 379 points. Tech concluded the four-day conference meet with 10 top-five finishes, including a silver medal from Charlie Higgins in the 100 backstroke and two bronze honors from Mikey McDonald in the one-meter and platform diving challenges. McDonald set school records in both events and also placed fourth in the three-meter. The H2Okies 400 medley relay team of Charlie Higgins, Jonathan Huss, Ian deToll and Stephen Hawkins finished third overall, posting a school-record time of 3:11.18. The combination of deToll, Hawkins, Zach Holmes and Richard Ulatowski also earned a school-record time of 2:55.49 in the 400 freestyle relay, good for fourth-overall. Trey Stewart recorded a top-five finish, claiming the fourth-place spot in the 200 butterfly.

ACC Women’s ChampionshipsThe H2Okie women topped last year’s fourth-

place finish as they totaled 451 points to claim the third-place spot at championships. Led by All-American Sara Smith, the women beat their 2008 score by nearly 90 points. Smith took the gold medal in the 50 freestyle, marking the sixth individual title for the women in the past four seasons, and finished third in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Erika Hajnal was also a significant contributor, adding three top-three finishes. Hajnal placed second in the 500 freestyle with a school-record time of 4:40.30, third in the 400 IM and third in the 1650 freestyle, where she earned a school-best time of 16:00.16. The women’s relay squad collected second-place finishes in the 200 medley, 400 medley and

400 freestyle, while also claiming third in the 200 freestyle. Diver Cara Murnan placed fifth-overall in the platform and Natalie West led the H2Okie team in the one- and three-meter diving competitions.

Second-place Finishes at Volunteer Invitational

Both squads posted second-place finishes at the Volunteer Invitational in the final regular season meet of 2008. The women totaled 907 points while the men finished with 753 points. The women saw first-place finishes in three relay events and titles in seven individual events. They were led by Smith, who totaled 94 points across the four-day meet.

Junior Mikey McDonald led the divers with titles in the one-meter and three-meter to help the men’s team place second overall, while the women’s divers took first.

H2Okies sweep Georgia Tech and UNC Wilmington on Senior Day

The men’s and then 23rd-ranked women’s swimming and diving teams posted four wins on senior day at War Memorial Pool. The women defeated ACC foe Georgia Tech, 218-82, and saw victory over UNC Wilmington, 250-50. The men defeated Georgia Tech, 167-133, and UNC Wilmington, 246-53. The teams combined for 23 individual wins, breaking six War Memorial Pool records. In her final meet at War Memorial Pool, Sara Smith recorded titles in the 50 and 100 free, breaking both pool records and setting a new ACC record in the 50 free.

At Virginia Tech, student-athletes don’t just play sports. With help from the Athletics Office of Student Life, Hokie student-athletes work outside the athletic arena to develop into com-munity assets and responsible adults. Inspired by the NCAA/CHAMPS (Changing Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success) Life Skills Pro-gram, the Athletics Office of Student Life cre-ates programs designed to enhance student-athletes in five areas of commitment: athletic excellence, academic excellence, personal and leadership development, community ser-vice and career development. The program has been previously honored for its commitment to serving the good of the student-athletes by the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Association as a program of excellence.

Led by the Virginia Tech Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Hokie student-athletes volunteered countless hours in the local com-munity last year. In addition, over 300 Virginia Tech student-athletes earned a 3.00 grade point average during one or both semesters. The accomplishments in the classroom and the community are all the more impressive given the Hokie student-athletes’ success in the 2008-2009 season.

The office is under the guidance of Assis-tant Athletics Director for Student Life Reyna Gilbert. She is assisted by Student Services Coordinator Danny White.

Student Athlete Advisory Committee

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the

student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Two members of each sports team serve on SAAC each academic year and meet twice a month to discuss issues and concerns regarding their sports, department of athletics, ACC and NCAA legislation. The leadership team during 2008-2009 was Beth Walker (softball) – president; Preston Lemon (men’s tennis) – vice president; and Brittany Pryor (track and field) – secretary. Each year, SAAC sponsors a canned food drive during the basketball season.

Personal Development The Office of Student Life aims to help stu-

dent-athletes lead balanced lifestyles, encour-aging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills. To do so, each team attends two personal development work-shops during the year. The workshops edu-cate them in healthy living, service learning, career development, diversity and life skills.

Career DevelopmentVirginia Tech student-athletes savor their

collegiate athletic experiences with the under-standing that upon graduation, they will need to secure a job. The Student Life Office worked with Becca Scott in the Virginia Tech Career Services Center to create programs designed to teach student-athletes why they are much sought after for their transferable skills (resil-iency, time management, teamwork, competi-tiveness and ambition).

Student-athletes have access to several career development programs.

Academic ExcellenceThe Virginia Tech Athletics Office of Stu-

dent Life is responsible for nominating student-athletes for academic honors and awards. Ath-letes are nominated for on-campus, Atlantic Coast Conference and national awards. Stu-dent-athletes with a 3.0 GPA are rewarded each semester by being honored on the Athletic Di-rector’s Honor Roll. In 2008-2009, 342 student-athletes were named to this prestigious list.

Pedro Graber (men’s tennis) and Kelly Phil-lips (women’s track and field) received the Skel-ton Award for Academic Excellence in Athletics. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who demonstrate leadership, outstanding academic excellence and commu-nity involvement. The recipients of the award each receive a $5,000 scholarship donated by the late Dr. Bill Skelton and his wife Peggy.

Community OutreachVirginia Tech student-athletes are involved

more than ever in the local community. Having volunteered many hours in the schools, commu-nity groups and hospitals, student-athletes are setting a high precedent for all involved with the program. Under the “Hokies with Heart” umbrel-la, each sports team has a community partner with which they volunteer their time. During the season they also host a home match to honor the partnership program. Each athletic team at Virginia Tech is encouraged to select one local charity on which to focus their philanthropic ef-forts throughout the year.

The success of Virginia Tech’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs rest largely on the academic progress of each student-athlete. The academic performance of Tech student-athletes has improved each year due in part to the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).

The Virginia Tech graduation rate for stu-dent-athletes has risen significantly in recent years and was a school-best 76 percent for 2007. This marked the fourth time in six years that Virginia Tech’s student-athlete graduation rate has been 70 percent or better.

In addition to posting impressive graduation figures, current Virginia Tech student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. For the 2008 calendar year, well over 300 3.0 GPA’s were earned by student-athletes, student train-ers, student managers, cheerleaders and High-Techs. These student-athletes and students from support areas were recognized at the Ath-letic Director’s Honors Breakfast last spring.

Whether in the classroom or in the pool, expectations placed on Virginia Tech student-athletes remain consistently high year after year. In collaboration with the Tech Athletics Department, Student-Athlete Academic Sup-port Services (SAASS) works tirelessly to help Hokie student-athletes achieve their full poten-tial, both on and off the field. Services avail-able include tutors, study assistance, computer and technology aid as well as individual skill development programs. In addition, SAASS in-tegrates its services with those of the Virginia Tech community, assisting students in arrang-ing appointments with various University de-partments, such as their academic advisors, the Registrar, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, dean’s offices, Career Services, Cook Counseling Center, Cranwell Interna-tional Center and the Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence. The department is committed to providing a comprehensive aca-demic and personal development program for student-athletes, offering academic counseling in combination with university academic advis-ing to ensure students receive a complete sys-tem of support.

Each team at Virginia Tech is assigned an academic counselor to coordinate individual-ized support efforts for every team member. Together, SAASS department members assist approximately 500 student-athletes in all areas of academic assistance, from freshman orien-

tation to course selection to career counseling and planning.

SAASS Mission and Programs: Available Services

Athletic Transitions — (Freshman student-athletes) A required course designed to ease the transition from high school to college.

Orientation — A course designed for fresh-man and transfer student-athletes.

Tutoring — (All student-athletes) Individual and group tutoring appointments are available on-site.

Academic Progress — (Freshman and transfer student-athletes) Professors send aca-demic progress reports to his/her athletic advi-sors twice a semester.

SAASS Computer Lab — (All student-ath-

letes) The lab features computer and printer ac-cess conveniently located in Lane Stadium.

Academic Recognition — (Qualified stu-dent-athletes) SAASS recognizes each student-athlete with a GPA of 3.0 and above at the end of each semester on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Study Hall — Freshman student-athletes and upperclassmen with a GPA below the team requirement.

Advising/Counseling — (All student-athletes) SAASS works closely with each stu-dent’s academic advisor within the college of their major.

Academic and Athletic Eligibility — (All student-athletes) The department monitors each student-athlete’s academic record to ensure that they are making progress toward their degree.

Mike SwanhartAssistant Director SAASS

Swanhart begins his second year with the H2Okies as an assistant director for swimming and diving. Prior to joining Tech, Swanhart spent a year and a half at Florida Atlantic in a similar role. Swanhart completed his master’s degree at Barry Univer-sity in sports management, while receiving his undergraduate degree at Rowan University in communications. He currently works with the Hokie men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s soccer and softball teams.

All student-athletes have access to the SAASS computer lab in Lane Stadium.

The Sports Medicine Department at Virginia Tech is constantly evolving to incorporate new ideas utilizing state-of-the-art resources for the betterment of all Hokie student-athletes. Under the leadership of Assistant Athletics Director for Ath-letic Training, Mike Goforth, the department is con-stantly improving and developing new strategies to provide the most current and comprehensive care.

Their team of certified athletic trainers, ortho-paedic surgeons, Board Certified primary care

physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, sport psychologists, nutritionists, massage thera-pists and orthotists are available on site to manage the health care needs of Tech athletes. The staff continually looks for ways to enhance the services provided for their athletes as evidenced by its par-ticipation in local and national projects pertaining to related topics such as concussion management, prevention of antibiotic resistant types of staph in-fection, high ankle sprains and collegiate health

care management strategies. Tech now has more than 10,000 square feet

dedicated to sports medicine, placing it in the top five percent nationally. The $10 million Merryman Center includes 2,400 square feet of medical space and a physician’s suite. The suite is equipped with a new state-of-the-art X-ray system, a fluoroscopy unit and a minor procedure room. The training room also has offices for the staff, dozens of train-ing tables, two cold tubs, whirlpools, an underwa-ter treadmill, a Biodex System 3 and various other pieces of rehabilitation equipment and treatment modalities.

If physical therapy is needed, student-athletes can be seen by physical therapists Mark Piecho-ski and Katie Burns in the Ferrell Training Room. Piechoski, a certified athletic trainer, physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist, plays a large role in the overall program developed to return an injured athlete back to 100 percent. In addition, staff sport psychologist Dr. Gary Bennett is available to all student-athletes for personal and performance issues.

Strength & ConditioningOne of the most important aspects of the Vir-

ginia Tech swimming and diving program, now entering its fifth season in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, is its strength and conditioning program.

Sports NutritionEating healthy and choosing nutritious diets

are important aspects of a Virginia Tech student-athlete’s life. Amy Freel is in her eighth year as the nutritionist. Freel, who is one of 16 full-time college dietitians in the country, also serves on the nutrition and performance committee with Dr. Gary Bennett.

Freel provides individual players with diet coun-seling on issues such as gaining lean muscle mass, losing body fat, and eating choices to improve per-formance. She also designs preseason menus, snacks and training table menus for the swimming and diving teams.

Also in July 2002, the Virginia Tech Athletics Department purchased the Bod Pod body compo-sition system. Tech is one of a handful of college athletic departments using this type of technology. It accurately measures body composition (percent of body fat, lean muscle mass and fat mass) through air displacement within five minutes. Research has shown that an increase in lean muscle mass will increase athletic performance. The sports nutrition

program has helped countless Tech athletes maxi-mize their athletic performance.

Sport PsychologyVirginia Tech offers another important service

to all of its student-athletes – sport psychology. Dr. Gary Bennett coordinates the sport psychology department, which offers psychological and perfor-mance enhancement services for student-athletes. Bennett also works closely with the Cook Counsel-ing Center.

Bennett meets with student-athletes on an indi-vidual basis for personal counseling and to discuss the mental aspects of the sport. He also works on team building, communication and performance enhancement.

Katlyn Joyner begins her second season with the H2Okie swimming and diving team as the athletic trainer. Joyner, a na-tive of Yadkinville, N.C., graduated from Western Carolina Uni-versity in May 2008 with a B.S. in athletic training. She is cur-rently working on a master’s degree in health promotion with a concentration in sports medicine.

Most of the buildings on the beautiful Tech campus are constructed using Hokie Stone. This natural rock is a 475-million-year-old dolomite limestone, some of which is mined from a quarry located not far from Cassell Coliseum. In constructing the building at Tech, a stonemason shapes individual stones, ar-ranges them and cements them together with mortar to create walls of great strength and durability.

That’s the most often-asked question in Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Hokie” yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. The official school colors – Chicago maroon and burnt orange – also were introduced in 1896. They were chosen because they made a “unique combination” not worn elsewhere at the time.

The TraditionConsistency. It is the mark of true excel-

lence in any endeavor.However, in today’s intercollegiate athlet-

ics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency.

Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now, in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as

one of the strongest and most competitive intercol-

legiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it.

Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC

schools have captured 113 national champion-

ships, including 60 in women’s competition and 53 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-ath-letes 209 times.

Men’s swimming and diving has been a league-sponsored sport since the ACC’s berth in 1953, while women’s swimming and diving saw its first season in 1979, but both programs continue to bring new heights of success to the ACC each year. The 2008-09 season marked a campaign that saw the league’s swimmers and divers help distinguish ACC swimming and div-ing on a national level both academically and athletically.

In 2008-09, Duke’s Chip Peterson and North Carolina’s Katura Harvey exemplified the ACC’s reputation as an outstanding academic confer-ence as both were third-team College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selections, bringing the league’s total to 28.

Additionally, at the conclusion of the season, a total of 21 new men’s records, including 18 ACC Championship meet records, had been set, and 18 new women’s marks, including 20 ACC Championship meet times, had been re-written into the ACC’s record book.

A combined 14 teams – six men and eight women – saw action at the NCAA Champion-ship meet last season, with the men placing five ACC teams among the top-25 team finishes nationally and the women placing seven. The 2008-09 season marked the fifth consecutive season that men’s programs have had five or more teams compete at the national meet, while the women’s eight teams tied a league-high for the second straight season.

As has been the case for the past several

seasons, the ACC again made its presence known on a national level with eight men and nine women winning All-America honors. Reu-ben Ross was a three-time All-America in 2008-09 with a third-place showing in platform div-ing and seventh-place finishes in the one- and three-meter diving events for 18th-place finish-ing Miami. Men’s ACC Champion Virginia post-ed a league-best ninth-place finish – regardless of gender – at the national meet, and had Matt McLean (third in the 500-meter freestyle, fifth in the 800-meter freestyle relay) and Scott¬¬ Robison (fifth in the 200-meter freestyle, fifth in the 800-meter freestyle relay) earn multiple All-America honors, while Georgia Tech, which came in at 19th at the national meet, had Gal Nevo (fourth in the 200-meter individual medley, second in the 400-meter individual medley) take two All-Americas.

Also on the national level for the women, the ACC was represented by NC State’s Kris-ten Davies, who helped the Wolfpack to a 29th place finish with a platform diving championship, the league’s second such title in as many years (Miami’s Brittany Viola captured the league’s first ever platform title in 2008). Additionally, two of nine women All-American swimmers gar-nered multiple All-Americas, with women’s ACC Champion Virginia’s (12th place) Mei Chris-tensen (sixth in the 400-meter freestyle relay, fifth in the 100-meter backstroke, sixth in the 200-meter backstroke) taking three and North Carolina’s (20th place) Whitney Sprague (sev-enth in the 500-meter freestyle, second in the 1,650-meter freestyle) taking two.

Overall, the men’s programs have seen 236 participants honored as All-Americans, 16 na-tional individual champions, and one national championship relay team in its 57 years. In 30 years of existence, women’s programs have had 264 All-Americans and seven individual cham-pions.

Beyond the collegiate level are numerous former ACC swimmers and divers who have made an impact on the international stage. North Carolina alum Thompson Mann was the first male to compete at the Olympics when he won gold at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, and Sue Walsh, also a former Tar Heel, became the first female from an ACC institution to compete at the Olympics as a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. Mann also set a world record in Tokyo by becoming the first person to break one minute in the 100-meter backstroke with a 59.80 showing.

Duke alum Nancy Hogshead became the first female from an ACC institution to win an Olympic medal with first-place finishes at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California in the

100-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle and relay teams, and a silver-medal performance in the 200-meter individual medley.

2008-09 in ReviewThe 2008-09 academic year saw league

teams capture five national team titles and 16 individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 48 national team titles over the last 13 years and has won two or more NCAA titles in 27 of the past 29 years.

A total of 130 ACC teams placed in NCAA postseason competition in 2008-09. League teams compiled a 139-84-1 (.637) mark in NCAA championship competition. In addition, the ACC had 198 student-athletes earn first team All-America honors this past year. Overall, the league had 266 first-, second-, or third-team All-Americans and the ACC produced nine national Players of the Year and five national Coach of the Year honorees. A total of 88 teams finished their respective seasons ranked in the Top 25 poll, including 33 teams ranked in the Top 10 and six teams that held the nation’s top spot.

The ChampionshipsThe conference will conduct championship

competition in 25 sports during the 2009-10 ac-ademic year - 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wres-tling or tennis during the first year.

The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981.

Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship meet held in tennis at Wake Forest University.

Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, field hockey, soc-cer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing with volleyball deciding its champion by regular season play.

The late Margaret Soulen Gilbert ‘89 (pictured with family) began the H2Okies’ tradition of excellence in 1989, claiming All-American (HM) honors for both the 100 and 200 backstroke events and being named the Metro Conference Swimmer of the Year. As the !rst All-American for the H2Okies, Margaret Soulen Gilbert’s impact also echoed through time as she would later be inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Sara Smith ‘09 (above) continued this tradition of high merit, racking up numerous ACC titles and All-American honors of her own, while also being named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year on two occasions. Alongside the many honors bestowed upon Smith throughout her career, she eventually became the fastest women’s swimmer in the history of the ACC.

Kaan Tayla ‘08 (below) was another H2Okie legend. Tayla, a multiple-time ACC champion, became the H2Okies’ !rst-ever Olympian, competing in two Olympic Games (Athens ‘04 & Beijing ‘08) and a World Championship (Rome ’09).
