Two of our staff members leaving this summer warrant special recognition: Laura Sohns and JoAnn Held. We celebrate their departures knowing that we will miss them greatly. Our thanks to both. Long gone are the days of schools like ours closing and locking their gates at the start of summer only to reopen them at the start of class in the fall. Within these pages you’ll find a brief listing of all that is happening on campus this summer, in addition, of course, to the regular maintenance necessary to keep our 35 acres and eight buildings in top condition. Please know that all School offices are open for business during the summer hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. except for the Independence Day holiday, and there are wonderful opportunities for EHS students and others to participate in organized activities or get a jump on the college admissions process. Or, simply stop by to say hello. We look forward to seeing you! C. By Patricia Houser, EHS College Counselor

As summer approaches, families across the country will begin planning extensive trips in search of the perfect college. When building these trips, families often turn to the illustrious college ranking publications, sorting the “best” colleges from the rest.

In the world of college admission, these glossy publications are commonly known as “Swimsuit Editions.” Simply put: they sell. College rankings are cash cows for the publishers, trusted by consumers, but dismissed by nearly all educators. It is no surprise that as a school’s ranking improves, the application volume grows as well, allowing the school to become more selective. It’s a win-win for the colleges that rank well and those who rank them but it makes the process of college admission more difficult for you to navigate. Before you, too, become overly concerned with college rankings, be a smart consumer and educate yourself on what’s behind those rankings. The methodology behind the infamous US News and World Report College Rankings is public information, but few consumers take the time to do their research before picking up a copy. You might find the “numbers” behind the numbers somewhat shocking:

The largest singular component of the overall ranking is the Peer Assessment rating. College Presidents weigh in on other institutions. Of course, he or she will give his or her institution the best rating, while giving direct competitors the lowest, and making an educated guess on the others. It’s interesting to note that the Peer Assessment has taken on a bit of circular motion. When filling out the survey, college presidents often refer to past rankings. In effect, a good rank means a good reputation assessment, which in turn assures a good rank, which in turn assures another good reputation, etcetera. Graduation/Retention Rates and Faculty Resources both contribute significantly to the overall ranking. The former is mostly legitimate while the latter deals with numbers that can be easily manipulated. One could argue as well that the methodology

behind this component does not accurately measure the quality of the classroom experience at all. Faculty Compensation carries the most weight, and the ranking does not take into consideration issues such as cost of living. Does the paycheck truly measure the quality of the professor? When a school cannot manipulate its numbers to make faculty salaries look better, they increase them, often through tuition hikes. Class size is also an important factor in this portion of the ranking. It is important to understand, however, that schools play the rankings game and make their small classes smaller, causing already large classes to swell further. This will give the institution a better ranking without hiring any additional faculty or adding courses to the catalog. Other contributors to the overall ranking include Student Selectivity, Financial Resources, Alumni Giving, and Graduation Rate Performance. There are ways to manipulate each of these as well, especially selectivity. Did you know that when you visit some Admission Offices and sit in their well-decorated lobbies to “update your personal information” you are actually filling out Part I of their application? Congrats! You have just become an applicant.

As a smart consumer, you should ask yourself a few questions before picking up that Swimsuit Edition, as alluring as it may be. Does a better ranking mean a better fit for you as a student? Does a jump in rankings reflect true change in the classroom and on the campus?

Join us as we celebrate one of America’s most beloved cities, San Francisco, for Auction 2011: I left My Heart in san Francisco – a

golDEN gaTE KNIgHT on March 4, 2011! Summer’s here and Auction Chairmen DeDe Bertron, Melanie Meeks, and cristin

Miller want you to keep the Auction in mind during these summer months. Vacation days are often the perfect time to brainstorm ideas and

secure items.

Securing Items When you’re traveling this summer, please keep

an eye out for one-of-a-kind items that might look tempting on the Auction table. If you are staying at a hotel or resort, please take the time to ask

the management for a weekend for our Getaway section. Anything that looks good to you will look

good to another EHS parent on Auction night. Please contact EHS Auction Coordinator Debbie

Kelley (713-512-3442) if you would like some donor forms or if you would like the office to fax

a form to a vendor for you.

Live Auction Program Ad Acquisitions

The marketing and selling of ads takes place during the summer months, so if your summer workload

is lighter at home or in the office, and you’re willing to help, just call Live Auction Program Ad Chairmen Johnnie Taylor and Mary goss

(numbers in EHS directory). Acquiring advertisers for the Live Auction Program is easy and can be

done from your office or home.

Are You a Good Needlepointer?

If so, we need you! If you would like to needlepoint a stand-up piece to be included

with a collection in the Live Auction, please call Needlepoint Chairmen patti cowan and lori

Britton (numbers in EHS directory).

Be sure to keep your eyes open in July for your Parent Packet with more exciting Auction news. The Auction Office will be open during the summer from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mondays

through Fridays. We wish you and your families a restful and enjoyable summer holiday!
