During this past year, my experiences confirmed something I’ve long believed.

We need each other — and our connections make us stronger.

You and I together are achieving more than we could on our own. Through our connection with United Way, we are multiplying the effects of our efforts, making a tremendous impact on the education, income and health of the 1 million people in the region.

The more connections we make, the stronger our community grows. I am proud to report that in 2009, United Way gained more partners than ever before. For example, our Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond coalition has connected with more than 125 organizations to finalize a five-year action plan to ensure that every child from birth to age 5 is healthy, well-cared for, and ready to succeed in school and in life. With these partners, we’ll put the plan into action in 2010.

We also connected with people who want to impact the lives of older adults. As a leader in the Greater Richmond Age Wave planning process, we are preparing our community for the “age wave” that will double the number of older adults in America by 2030.

Through these and other connections, we are creating lasting change that will improve the lives of thousands of people.

You may not have thousands of people in mind when you connect with United Way. You may be thinking about the mom who triumphed over homelessness, or the teen who overcame his obstacles and graduated from high school. Stories like these touch my heart, too. You are reaching them through United Way.

Thank you for connecting with us to build a stronger community.

Sincerely,

ouR MIssIon:

United Way leads the way to solutions for a better community.

heAlth Supporting the health and wellness of older adults and their caregivers.

I have two big words to say: Thank you.

Thank you to the community for your continued support of United Way during these challenging economic times. We are overwhelmed by your generosity.

Thank you to the hardworking and passionate United Way volunteers and staff. The ability of these dedicated folks to remain unwavering in their commitment to the community is inspiring.

And thank you to the people who Live United every day. Your collective efforts are strengthening the region every time you give, advocate and volunteer with United Way.

Since 2008, it has been my privilege to serve as Chair of the United Way Board of Directors. We have worked to be good stewards of the resources given to us by the people and companies who trust us. We all — volunteers and staff — have remained committed to ensuring that more children and youth are achieving their potential, that more families are financially secure, and that more people of all ages are healthy, especially older adults and their caregivers.

Work this big cannot be done by any one group. The strength of United Way is in our connections: to you, to businesses, to volunteers, to community leaders, to people in need, and to organizations that help people in need. When we connect these groups, we multiply the impact in the community many times over. Together, we are finding solutions. Together, we are taking action. Together, we are creating opportunities for a better tomorrow.

Thank you for being part of United Way.

Sincerely,

Dear FrienDS oF UniTeD Way:

You ARe chAngIng lIves todAY every day, families in our community receive assistance from programs that are funded by your generosity. This is a small sampling of the big impact your dollars are making in our region by supporting the building blocks of a good life.

Zoe and marcus Learn TogetherWhen Zoe enrolled in Healthy Families Petersburg, she was a brand-new single mom who had grown up in poverty. She wanted more for her son and herself, and she found it through the United Way-funded program. Zoe is now a parent who enjoys reading to Marcus, her son, and finding creative ways for them to learn and play together. She also found a full-time job and successfully put herself through nursing school. These connections to the world around them are giving Zoe and Marcus new opportunities to be stronger members of their community.

a Stable Life for DianneViolence. Discrimination. Life on the street. Dianne’s life had been tough before she arrived at the Espigh Family Shelter at HomeAgain, and she was ready for a change. The United Way-funded program helped Dianne put her life back together, move to transitional housing, and get hired by one of the programs that helped her. “Being homeless was the lowest point in my life, but HomeAgain saved my life,” she said. In her new job, Dianne is connecting people with hope for a new life.

Jim’s Brighter DaysJim has something to wake up for every day — his visits to the Adult Day Services program at Hanover Adult Center. He has flourished at the United Way-funded program, making new friends and enjoying the activities, and his happiness is evident to his family. More importantly, the program staff ’s attentiveness to Jim and their advice for his caregiver ensured that Jim received an important cancer diagnosis. After undergoing treatment, Jim’s pain lessened, the quality of his life improved, and he continued to be able to connect with his family and community.

WHen yoU Live UniTeD, yoU are connected

Through your support of United Way, you are taking action to aid thousands of your neighbors and strengthen the fabric of our community.

When you give, advocate and volunteer with United Way, you are forging connections. You are uniting children, families and older adults with the services they need. You are uniting community members with the coalitions that need their expertise to tackle the big issues. And you are uniting volunteers with the organizations that need their knowledge and energy.

By connecting with us, you are bringing together the people and organizations with the passion, expertise and resources to create long-term change in the Richmond-Petersburg region.

education opportunities outside of school are just as important for a child’s development as school itself. With your support, United Way helped more than 30,000 children and teens access programs that provided quality early care and education, family support, mental health services, and positive places to go outside of school.

achieving financial stability remained challenging for our region’s residents last year. To help, United Way launched a financial education website and created two new resource guides. United Way-funded programs also connected more than 36,000 people with job training and placement, housing assistance, and other services.

Family caregivers provide 80% of all long-term care for older adults. United Way is working to ensure that our region has strong support systems for both. Last year, you helped United Way connect more than 8,000 older adults with care, legal assistance, transportation and meals — and granted peace of mind to their caregivers.

4

Page 5: 2009 Annual Report

our second-annual day of Action in 2009 drew 275 people from 32 companies to volunteer throughout richmond and petersburg and make an impact together! Here, several petersburg-area volunteers take time out from the day’s activities.

in august, United Way connected our volunteers with the ymCa Bright Beginnings program to help children in need buy new clothes and school supplies. That’s not all our volunteers do! Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers were matched with 50 projects through United Way.

United to prepare today’s children to become tomorrow’s leaders, our Women’s leadership Initiative members are giving, advocating and volunteering (shown here) with United Way to support early childhood development. This movement now includes more than 300 local women, and that number keeps growing!

Imagine a world where all young children are healthy and well-cared for. A world where all children are able to read, where all youth have safe places to spend their time outside of school, and where all teenagers graduate from high school. A world where all families can make ends meet and every family has housing. A world where all aging adults are active, engaged in the community, and remain in their homes as they grow older.

You are bringing this vision to life through your support of United Way.

For example, United Way and its partners in Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond are working to ensure that all children, from birth to age 5, in the greater Richmond and Petersburg region are healthy, well-cared for, and ready to succeed in school and in life. Our Information & Referral Center, reached by phone at 2-1-1, connects people in need with the services that can help them become financially stable, find quality child care and health services, and more. And with our partners in the Greater Richmond Age Wave planning process, we are preparing our community to accommodate the coming “age wave” of aging Baby Boomers.

You are the person who connects all of this — the work of the agencies that help individuals and families and the partnerships that are finding and implementing solutions to the issues that affect our region.

You are at the heart of the connections that are creating a better tomorrow for the Richmond-Petersburg region.

Thank you for lIvInG unITED.
