2009 Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Annual Report

2009 has proven to be another remarkable year for Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels (FBS) thanks in large part to our passionate & committed team of volunteers, generous community supporters and proactive leadership, as we have overcome significant challenges and attained notable successes. It is hard to believe that we are already approaching

the end of yet another year, however, time flies when you are having fun. It is indeed our pride and joy to serve the generation of seniors who have so ably served our community in so many different roles including business, education, agriculture and the military. We also remain appreciative and humbled by the military personnel who continue to serve our country overseas protecting the liberties and quality of life we enjoy. 2009 marked the celebration of our 35th year anniversary of providing services to seniors, which has been a tremendous milestone for our agency and I am pleased to have this opportunity to share some of the year’s highlights for FBS. In doing so, I also want to extend our profound gratitude to everyone who has contributed and added value to our mission in 2009 as a volunteer, employee, board member, or donor. It is through the collaborative efforts of our family of friends, neighbors and staff that we have enjoyed so much success and continue to thrive in this struggling economy. I would be remiss if I did not mention that without our committed staff members, who are continually willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, we would not have had the energy, enthusiasm, and creativity which are so instrumental in all of our accomplishments again this year. Likewise, our corporate

friends, sponsors and board members from the business community are the true champions of 2009 for our seniors as they have struggled to do more with less in this sluggish economy; they have nonetheless remained staunch supporters of our commitment to ending senior hunger. Through our concerted efforts, we have managed to eliminate the wait list by substantially increasing our meal service in 2009 also resulting in completion of Phase III to serve meals seven days per week. Overall, our meals increased by 16.5 percent (204,673 units) from 2008 (175,633 units) and clients increased by 18.3 percent (FY 2009-1104 clients/FY2008-933 clients). As you may know, the majority of FBS recipients live at or below the poverty level, are frail due to poor health, and are isolated. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the official poverty rate in 2009 was 14.3 percent — up from 13.2 percent in 2008. This was the second statistically significant annual increase in the poverty rate since 2004. Also in 2009, 43.6 million people were in poverty, up from 39.8 million in 2008 — the third consecutive annual increase in the number of people in poverty. Nonetheless, when the going gets tough, the tough get going and as the demand for our services increased in 2009, our employees and volunteers continued to respond to the need providing more than 204,673 meals. Even as the number of requirements and challenging client circumstances continued to rise, no request was denied. Our active volunteer corps of 727 individuals strongly contributed 12,697 hours of service, primarily in meal delivery. We are proud of our employee and volunteer teams. Their commitment, talents and dedication to service are distinguishing factors in the success of FBS. 2009 was also the first year FBS employed a grant writer to assist in increasing and diversifying our funding sources to cover the growing needs in the community. Throughout this year,

numerous grant applications were successfully submitted to well-respected foundations such as Meadows Foundation, Sterling-Turner and Houston Endowment resulting in a 67.5 percent increase over grant funds in previous years. One of our most exciting accomplishments was the production of our first FBS video professionally created by Professional Tributes. This video has been uploaded on our website and YouTube to educate the community about how FBS is effectively eliminating senior hunger. The video is being leveraged at every opportunity to spread our mission. This video could not have been done without the generous support of NewFirst Bank. Other marketing goals accomplished were in the social media areas of Facebook, Twitter, FBS website, and YouTube. The information is updated weekly with current events which include our volunteers and supporters. In closing, as we wrap up 2009 and look ahead to the future, we are embarking on the “Buy In Campaign” as we expand our branding efforts to raise the agency to the next level to be the premier Meals on Wheels organization in the community and one of the model meal programs in the nation. In doing so, we fully believe that the foundation and strength of our organization, which keeps us vibrant, is the team of committed volunteers, financial supporters, board and staff who have an unyielding passion to serve our most precious natural resource, our senior citizens.

Best regards,

2009 Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Annual Report

Meals on WheelsThe growth in the meal service program was substantial in 2009 resulting in no wait list and completion of Phase III to provide meals seven days per week. Overall, our agency’s meals increased by 16.5 percent (204,673 units) from 2008 (175,633 units).

Senior Center ProgramsThe Senior Centers saw a 10 percent increase in rides, contracted through Fort Bend County Public Transportation, from previous years. The Centers continued to grow in attendance and provided much needed exercise, socialization and nutrition in addition to monthly birthday parties, field trips, speakers and seasonal celebrations.

Special Events & GrantsWith the branding campaign came new opportunities to grow the Signature Events - The Mad Hatter Spring Luncheon & Fashion Show, Groovy Party and Tree of Honor. The Festival of Trees included beautifully decorated trees for sale and holiday cheer. Numerous grant applications were successfully submitted to well-respected foundations, which lead to a 45 percent increase in grant funds.

Marketing, Community & PRBranding the agency was a main focus in 2009. Social media connected the agency to the world through Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. Highlights include being named the beneficiary of the Fort Bend Junior Service League’s 2nd Cookbook - Treasures from the Bend, a 2009 Tabasco Award Winner and producing our first agency video, underwritten by NewFirst Bank, to use at every opportunity to educate about senior hunger.

Information & TechnologyA new server replaced the old allowing much needed secure back-up of documents. Upgraded software was installed on all agency computers. The agency also entered into a contract with Accessible Solutions, a web-based client management database, Constant Contact for email distribution and joined the Xerox Free Color Printer program.
