CRAIG REEDThe News-Review

here’s something about hundredsof classic cars — every color ofthe crayon box — cruising Dou-glas County’s streets for fivesolid days straight.

It’s a sight to see and it keeps motoristsand participants coming back for moreeach year.

Nearly 1,000 drivers pull into DouglasCounty each summer to show off theirclassic collectibles and hot rods duringGraffiti Weekend.

What started out as a simple ideabetween a couple of local car clubs hasblossomed into an occasion that drawsabout 20,000 spectators and participantsover its five-day span.

This year, the event continues to grow. The Rock ’n’ Rollin’ Pancake Breakfastand the Graffiti Drags are no longer unof-ficial events of Graffiti Weekend.

Those two events were popular enoughin their debuts last year that they are nowofficially on the week’s lineup.

This year’s 28th annual Graffiti Week-end is scheduled for today through Sundayin Roseburg.

Last year’s drag event drew about 50cars on Sunday. This year the drags will beheld Saturday evening at the DouglasCounty Speedway.

“We didn’t expect that many, but all of asudden it took hold,” said Don Larsen, amember of the Stray Angels Car Club anda co-coordinator of the Graffiti week. “It’llbe another place for cars and people to go

on Saturday night. They’ll have a place tocruise and a place to race.”

The Umpqua Flatheads Roseburg Graffi-ti Night Cruise for vehicles 1965 and olderis scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. The speed-way gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and thetrack will open to drag racing at 7 p.m.

Larsen said there has been some concernby organizers about participants and atten-dance for Graffiti Weekend because ofeconomic struggles for some people andbusinesses, but he said he’s optimisticabout the event continuing to be a success.

“We’re concerned, but we’re still gettinga lot of phone calls, so we’re still expect-ing a full house,” Larsen said. “Theseevents treat people well, it doesn’t costthem an arm and a leg. People can partici-pate with a donation here and there. We’rehappy it keeps going strong.”

Last year’s registration totaled 439 carsthat were pre-1975 models. About 70 per-cent of the registered cars come from outof the area.

Graffiti Weekend was started as an ideaback in 1982. It evolved into reliving the’50s by cruising some classic cars down

Harvard Avenue in Roseburg. Now, eachsummer, hundreds gather downtown tojoin the founders of the Graffiti Night

Cruise in remembering a simpler time. Since those early days, the cruise has

grown into one of Douglas County’s most

noteworthy events, providing five dayschock-full of hot rods, barbecues and otherfamily entertainment all known collective-ly as Graffiti Weekend.

One of those events is the 26th AnnualRiver Forks Show-n-Shine, another high-light of the week, presented by the StrayAngels Car Club. Some 500 cars, all atleast more than three decades old, willrumble into River Forks Park west ofRoseburg for a day of display in the sun.

New events include a new poker run atRay’s Food Place in Green and a Graffitikickoff show at the Roseburg VeteransAffairs Medical Center.

Organizers for the Graffiti Night Cruiseare also trying something new this year, opening the cruise to vehicles 1965 andolder, instead of the traditional 1960 andolder.

Osborn said the event is made possibleby several sponsors and donations fromlocal businesses. Cascade CommunityCredit Union is this year’s major sponsor.

“It’s a real joint venture between thecommunity,” he said. “And it’s a big shotin the arm for the town.”

“We feel pretty proud of it,” Larsen said.“We want it to be an affordable familyevent.”

ill Haynes likes to say he’s of thesame vintage as the classic car helikes best.

That would be the 1940 Fordcoupe. Haynes was born that same

year. Now the 69-year-old is working hard to

ready his 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe for theupcoming Graffiti Weekend activities inRoseburg.

“It’s a labor of love,” he said of workingon the car. “The gratification is in thedoing. It’s fun.”

Haynes is making the car a hot rod, andthat gives him leeway in bringing the carback to life. Rather than being restored toits original state, the car will have plentyof modifications to make it more modernand comfortable.

Haynes has had an interest in 1940coupes since buying his first one back in1956. He sold that one four years laterwhile in the U.S. Army, but has had fivemore since. The one he has now he foundin a barn in Flourney Valley west of Look-ingglass. He purchased it three years agoand hauled the car and its parts away in apile on a trailer.

“It was in rough shape,” he said of thecar. “Everything was crooked and warped. It was in terrible condition.”

He couldn’t wait to get to work on it, buthis full-time profession as a buildingdesigner-contractor limited his time for hisafter-hours hobby.

He worked on it part time for a coupleyears, but at the same time worked on a1964 Chevy pickup that he finished in time

to drive in last year’s Graffiti events. When Haynes ended his 40-year con-

tracting career last year, he finally hadthe time for which he’d been dreaming towork on his coupe. He began workingeight hours or more a day on it in hisshop near his Roseburg area home. He’sa one-man crew, but occasionally getsvisits from his young grandsons, Tylerand Will Haynes of Roseburg.

“They’re our junior hot-rodders,” BillHaynes said. “When the boys get a littlebigger, I’m going to teach them how todo all kinds of things.”

“I was wondering what I was going todo with him around the house all thetime,” Rees Haynes said of her husband’shobby. “Instead, he’s down there (in theshop) all the time.

“ That’s his domain. I’m really pleasedhe has this interest. He gets so muchgratification out of it.”

Both Bill and Rees have automobilebackgrounds. Both of their fathers wereemployees of Roseburg car dealershipswhile Bill and Rees were growing up.

Bill Haynes’ sole mission since hisretirement has been getting his coupe

ready for Graffiti Night. He spent sixmonths getting the old floor out and get-ting a new one in. Somebody previouslyhad tried to fix the old floor by welding itwith a brazing rod, and that made ittougher to remove.

“I cut it, grinded it, chiseled it, torchedit … trying to cut it from the sidewalls, pillars and the body panels,” Haynessaid. “That was the nastiest part. After Igot that done, then I had a pretty goodcar to work with.”

The end result will be a green coupewith a Chevy small block engine with afully synchronized three speed. Becauseof the modifications allowed in making ita hot rod, there’ll be drum brakes on the

rear tires and disc brakes in the front, independent front suspension, rack andpinion steering, air conditioner, heaterand direction signals.

But none of these modifications will benoticeable on the dashboard, leaving itwith an original look. The ignition is hid-den and direction signals are hiddenunder the dash. The air conditioning unitis in the trunk, and the AC switch is inthe glove box. The old starter switch isnow the horn button.

He’s made a back bench seat for thecar and put in seat belts so Tyler and Will

“It runs like a dream,” Haynes said ofthis coupe, adding with a laugh that likehis car, he too has some replacementparts. “It’s smooth, it tracks straight. It’sfun to drive.

“I wanted to be able to get out on thefreeway and drive 70 miles an hour, andbe comfortable doing it and get decentgas mileage,” he added. “The car will dothat.”

Haynes, who is a member of theUmpqua Flatheads Car Club, is verycomplimentary of the Graffiti event. Hesaid he has visited other classic carevents, but Roseburg’s is by far the best.

“It’s a cooperative effort by a numberof clubs and organizations … they workwell together and do a helluva job of put-ting on a terrific event,” he said.

CARA PALLONEThe News-Review

lightly more than a year ago, KarenMatney stopped at a garage sale inLookingglass and spotted an unusu-al collectible.

Unlike the worn clothing, antiquefurniture or baseball cards one mightexpect at such a sale, this item was differ-ent. It was a champagne beauty with 1960sflair, and it was winking at Matney fromthe lawn.

The ’67 Austin-Healey Sprite was forsale by its original owners, who markedthe price tag at $3,000. The British sportscar made road waves when it hit the mar-ket in the late ’50s. Matney immediatelyrecognized the value of the compact two-door roadster.

Although there were three potential buy-ers already standing around the car, Mat-ney asked the owner for the key to the

ignition. After taking the Austin for a testdrive, she whipped out her checkbook.

Dismayed at her instant decision, thepeople who had been standing around thecar started to complain.

“They said, ‘Hey, we’re looking atthat,’” Matney said with a cackle. “I toldthem, ‘You can look all you want; I justbought it.’”

Once she welcomed her prize to its newhome, Matney threw at least another$3,000 into the car.

It needed new upholstery, chromebumpers, brakes, mirrors and most impor-tant, a new paint job. Matney settled on theclosest shade she could find to the originalAustin-Healey blue. She is planning toinstall a new top on the convertible before

Graffiti Weekend.Matney admitted she knows very little

about Austins in general. When asked whatkind of engine it has, she replied, “one thatruns.”

However, with a little help from her carclub, the Stray Angels, the little speedsterwas in tip-top shape in no time.

The Stray Angels donated the hubcaps, another couple in the club applied freshpaint, one person installed new upholsteryand others, Matney said, used their “know-how” to make necessary repairs to the car.If they couldn’t make the repairs, clubmembers pointed Matney to someone whocould.

hen it comes to restoring oldclassic cars, Jim Boaz hasalways been a Ford man.

It’s not that the NewtonCreek resident has anything

against Chevys. For years, his wife drove a1972 Monte Carlo and he piloted a 1970 ElCamino.

However, beginning with a 1930 FordModel A, Boaz’s restoration work hasfocused on Fords. He’s refurbished a 1947Ford coupe and a convertible model fromthe same year.

“I’ve been restoring cars for a long time,”said Boaz, who bought his first car, a 1946Mercury, when he was 15.

Three years ago, however, a blue 1947Chevy sitting at a car lot in Cottage Grovecaught his eye. Boaz was on his way homeafter failing to negotiate a deal for a car heliked in Portland and stopped at Hamilton’sClassic Auto Sales to see what the placehad.

He spotted the blue 1947 Chevrolet andquickly decided it could easily take theplace of the automobile he had wanted tobuy in Portland. He purchased the two-doorcar on the spot.

“I liked the way it looked,” said Boaz, retired after spending 39 years making ply-wood for Roseburg Forest Products.

It took a year before Boaz started work-ing to restore the car. He installed a newfloorboard and added new running boards. He also replaced the stock six-cylinderengine with a rebuilt 1985 eight-cylinder,350 cubic inch displacement, model and

changed out the four-speed shifter on thefloor for another one.

“It’s been changed completely,” saidBoaz, who has resided in Douglas Countysince 1951 and who is a former chairman ofthe Umpqua Flatheads car club.

In addition, he also had to replace manyof the car’s front-end steering linkage.

“The front end was shot. You could hard-ly keep it on the road at 40 miles an hour,”Boaz said, laughing at the memory of driv-ing it home from the Cottage Grove dealer-ship on Interstate 5.

He updated the coupe’s drum brakes withdisc brakes and also installed electric

“It’s a wonderful club to belong to,” shesaid. “Everyone works together.”

Matney’s Sprite made its Graffiti debutlast year, although it isn’t yet old enoughto be driven in the Umpqua FlatheadsGraffiti Night Cruise each year on Satur-day. This year, the cruise age for cars is1965 or older.

While she can’t participate in that partic-ular Graffiti event, Matney is always outand about in the little blue Austin.

“I drive it as if I were in Europe at a racecourse,” she said. “I’m always upshiftingand downshifting.”

Matney is an expert behind the wheel. After moving to Douglas County fromNew Jersey in 1980, she drove a semitruckfor 13 years. After that, she was the firechief for the Lookingglass Volunteer FireDepartment.

She has always loved old cars, she said, but confided that she was actually search-ing for a 1964-1/2 Mustang Convertiblebefore she bought the Austin-HealeySprite.

A girl can never have too many classiccars, though, and Matney hinted that shemight make another spontaneous purchaseshould the opportunity arise.

motors to drive the automobile’s windshield wipers. Cars from that era came equipped with vacuum-driven wipers

powered by the engine. As the car accelerated, the wipers wouldgain speed, while slowing down with the engine.

He replaced the stock two-barrel carburetor with an Eldelbrockhigh performance four-barrel carburetor. That model is calibratedfor top street performance while providing good fuel economy.

He also has his eyes on replacing the striped cloth upholsterywith a burgundy and cream combination.

Boaz also stripped off the car’s paint, both its recent blue hueand an underlying green that he said was the vehicle’s originalshade.

He chose a red Chianti for the car’s new color. Because ofmedical issues, Boaz has only been able to get the firewall andthe hood painted so far. He’d hoped to have the car ready todrive in this year’s Graffiti Weekend, but said it will be nextsummer before the restored car is ready for its maiden cruise.

The car body has been sanded and coated with primer. Heplans to spray the car with two coats of the Pittsburgh PlateGlass Co. paint, followed by two or three layers of clear coat tobring out the paint’s gloss.

Many of his other restored cars were painted black. This timehe’s gone to red, one that contains subtle gold highlights.

“This is the first red car I’ve had,” Boaz said. “I kind of likedthe color.”

Designs for the Umpqua Flatheads Graf-fiti Night T-shirts usually begin with a sim-ple photo or a distant — but not forgotten— memory.

From there, T-shirt designer MitchOsborn lets his imagination run wild.

“I have a crazy little mind,” the 58-year-old said with a smile.

Osborn has been designing the shirts forthe annual Graffiti Night Cruise for thepast 14 years and has volunteered in vari-ous positions at the Umpqua Flatheads CarClub event for even longer.

But this year’s shirt featuring HansenMotor Co. after The Blast in 1959 will beOsborn’s final cruise T-shirt design. Aftermore than a decade at the design helm,Osborn is relinquishing his role to allowfor someone with new, fresh ideas to takeover.

“I’m ready to step back, and yeah, I’llmiss it, but if somebody needs guidance,I’ll help,” Osborn said.

After flipping through a notebook withphotos of 14 years worth of designs pro-tected in plastic cover sheets, Osborndecided that he couldn’t choose a favorite.

“They’re all a little bit special in theirown way,” he said.

Osborn began designing the shirts in1995; for the previous five years, various

people took responsibility for producingthe shirts. The first T-shirt Osborndesigned featured the Brockway Store witha 1957 Ford Thunderbird and a 1957Chevrolet Corvette.

In the years that followed, Osborn fea-tured Pete’s Drive-In, the Starlite Theaterand the Snack Shack — all old hangoutsaround town. In addition to replicatingiconic locations in Douglas County,Osborn has used the shirts to pay tribute toUmpqua Flatheads members who havedied and to showcase cars that won localshows.

Mitch Osborn has been designing the Graffiti Night T-shirts since 1995. He saysthis year’s shirt will be ‘one of the most colorful and multifaceted’ designs.

The white T-shirts cost $15. Proceeds sup-port the Umpqua Flatheads Car Club’s week-end events. The 2009 shirts feature HansenMotor Co. the day after the Roseburg Blast in1959.

will ever come to me,” Osborn said ofcoming up with shirt concepts. “... Some-times it’s easy. Sometimes it takes awhile.”

Osborn said he came up with the ideafor this year’s shirt after seeing an oldframed picture of Hansen Motor Co. hang-ing in Cascade Community Credit Union. The photo revealed the damage the down-town business endured from The Blast. Tohonor the 50th anniversary of the cata-strophic event, Osborn decided to use theimage in the photo on the front of the 2009shirt. The back of the shirt includes histori-cal information about the business and achronological listing of the events leadingup to The Blast.

“This one’s probably going to be one ofthe most colorful and multifaceted,”Osborn said of this year’s shirt.

Every year anywhere from 600 to 1,000Umpqua Flathead Graffiti Night shirts aresold and all of the proceeds support theannual event. Some of the other groupsinvolved in Graffiti Weekend also make T-shirts, but Osborn said not all actually sup-

port the weekend’s events. Any T-shirtwith the Graffiti Weekend logo on thesleeve promotes the various classic carevents.

Osborn said the most rewarding partabout his involvement in designing theshirts is seeing them evolve from a simpleidea in his head to a tangible item peoplewant to purchase.

“Just to see the shirts come alive,” he

said. “And when people see the shirts andgotta have them, that’s the icing on thecake.”
