HERLEV REBELS 2009 OFFENSE
2009 OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY- THE 5 WIDE ATTACK
The Rebels for years have been a traditional wing-t offense. We have produced 7 straight U19 national
championship teams, and have been building a senior team that will be a force to be reckoned with for many
years to come. So why fix what isn’t broke?
The wing-t has been in existence in many forms since the 1950’s. It has been successful from then and
continues to be successful, but like many offenses it has its limitations. As defenses have become moresophisticated and defenders become stronger and faster it has been more and more difficult for the wing-t to be
successful. The lack of wide receivers ensures the offense will be up against overloaded defensive fronts thatwill make every attempt to force them to pass to win. By keeping so many defenders in the box it limits the
QB’s field of vision making passing more difficult. Also the lack of a drop back game really takes away from the
deception that the wing-t playaction game needs to succeed. To succeed in modern football you need to keepthe defense guessing. Many winged systems (particularly the double wing) come with the arrogance of being
able to beat the defense with any play, which sounds nice in theory but let’s face it is not the reality. Some
defenses are bigger, stronger, faster and more technically sound. An offense needs to be able to exploit this.
The en vogue offense in modern football for the last several years has been the spread. The theory behind themodern spread offense is sound: by spreading the defense both horizontally and vertically you force the
defense to cover more space, which opens up both lanes in the passing and running games. This offense is notwithout its drawbacks as well. Defenses in order to stop the pass will only have 5-6 men in the box to stop the
run. The lack of misdirection in the spread’s base run game makes it very easy for the defense to read run andultimately stop it. The recent advent of the zone read to the spread run game has helped to remedy this
problem, but it’s not enough. There are also major holes in the offense’s bread and butter: the vertical passinggame. The fact that the offense plans to pass protect with at the most 6 blockers leaves them very susceptible
to the blitz. Unless you have a big offensive line with the athletic ability to cover a lot of space a team with astrong front 7 can dominate even the best spread offense.
So what’s the answer? Well there is no answer that will work for every situation, but by taking the best of both
offenses and combining them you can create an offense that can be tailored to beat every offense without
having to make major changes week in and out.
So what offense combines the benefits of the wing-t:
1. Misdirection which makes it difficult for the defense to read
2. Power that overloads the defense at the point of attack
3. Speed to outflank and outrun
With the benefits of the spread:
1. Spread the defense horizontally and vertically forcing the defense to play assignment football
2. The Threat of a vertical passing game that slows a defenses ability to read
3. Mismatches are created by taking a base defense and forcing them to play in space
The 5 wide spread incorporates the best of both offenses in an easy to understand offense that will spread,
confuse, and eventually overwhelm even the most talented defenses. Can a defense defend against a zoneflooded with 4 receivers while at the same time guarding against a fly sweep along with its counters? The
answer is no, not without giving up something else equally damaging. The game is changing, with all offenses
becoming hybrids, each seeking to incorporate some aspect of the spread passing game in an effort to level theplaying field. The 5 wide offense is a child of necessity, a response to the apathy of defenses have cultivated
when faced with a typical spread offense.
The general perceptions of the spread being a ‘finesse-style’ offense have drastically changed during itsevolution. People now realize that you can have a very physical run game out of spread shotgun formations.
We will take this offense and build a balanced attack that is driven by the run yet also can use the open space
created by the threat of the run to pick teams apart with the pass.

HERLEV REBELS 2009 OFFENSE
We believe in the spread for many reasons:
1. By spreading the field you force the defense to play assignment football
2. By spreading the field you take defenders out of the box, which means there are less players to block
on every play.
3. It allows you to distribute the ball to more players. This makes the game exciting and interesting. We
try to make the game fun and keep everyone involved.
The beauty of the spread is that you can adapt the offense to match the strengths of your personnel. We canpresent match-up problems against any defense we are facing. Coupling the personnel advantages with the
zone option concept our run-oriented spread offense will become increasingly successful.
RULES AND CONCEPTS
I. Zone ConceptA. The Zone Rule
i. Every player is responsible for the area from their backside shoulder to the playside gap.
ii. If there is no player in your assigned gap look to double team on the next closest defender or
release to 2nd level.
iii. The backside EMOLOS is not considered covered by an outside shade (i.e. a 5 or 9 tech).
Therefore they will release directly to 2nd level.
iv. Communication is key for the zone concept to work. Talk to each other, call out double teams, if
in doubt point out your blocks.
B. The Down Rule
i. Players are responsible for the area from their playside shoulder to the backside gap.
ii. All down blocks are one on one.
iii. If there is no player in your assigned gap then seek out next defender to the backside
iv. The defender must never be allowed to cross your face to the playside
II.Pull/Pullcheck/Down or ZoneA. The Pull
On any play where there is a pull involved we will first identify who is pulling and where he is
pulling.
B. The Pullcheck
First the player who is in the pullers gap must be identified the pullcheck will be performed bythe closest player to this defender. It is important that this defender is not allowed to cross the
face of the pullchecker to the playside.
C. Down or Zonei. If the playside guard is pulling then the remaining players not involved in the pull or pullcheck
will block following the zone rule.
ii. If the backside guard is pulling then the remaining players not involved in the pull or pullcheck
will block following the down rule.
iii. If the backside tackle is pulling then the remaining players not involved in the pull or pullcheck
will follow the zone rule

III. Option ConceptD. Speed Options
Simple one read options where the emphasis is on making a quick read and getting the ball upfield
E. Triple Optionsi. Two read options where the first read will be on a first level defender for either a dive or shovel
ii. 2nd read will be on a 2nd level defender for a keep or pitch.
F. Option read on run plays
QB will read the BS DE on run plays for the give or keep.
IV. The Perfect Run PlayInstead of one gap to run through our system gives us multiple options. Our blocking scheme is
designed to give cutback lanes and other options in case of the primary gap being closed down.
HUDDLE AND HUDDLE PROCEDURE
The Center will set the huddle 7 yard from line of scrimmage.
When the QB enters the huddle the center will yell “eyes!” Upon “eyes” everyone is focused on QB. Only the QB may speak. The QB will then call the play followed by
the cadence.
Ex. RED L28 FLY- On Sound.
The Center will now leave huddle. The QB will repeat the play and cadence a 2nd time, followed by the cadence
a third time, finished with “ready”. Team replied with “break” and a clap and breaks the huddle.

OPTION READ
END READ
GREEN L24 PULL
On all run plays we will have an option read built into the play. The QB will read thebackside DE; if the DE keeps his contain then the QB will hand off as usual. If theend crashes then the QB will keep the ball and run downhill in the space vacated bythe end.
“O” TAG
SMALL GREEN B24 PULL “O”
Another wrinkle to the option read game will be to run a triple option. If the “O” tag isapplied to a play then the non-designated back instead of going in front of the QBwill go behind the QB to get into a 4x4 pitch relationship. The QB will read the DEas usual, and if he reads keep he will now take a path to the next man downfieldand read them for keep or pitch.

DROP BACK PASSING GAME- THE BASICSThe success of any drop back passing game relies on three components: precision, timing, and reading. All three components rely on each other to be successful.
1. PRECISION- There is only one way to run a route and that is the correct way. If you are to run a
10 yard out then you must make your break at precisely 10 yards, not 9 or 11.
2. TIMING- Without proper timing no route combination can work. Receivers must get off of the
jam, into their routes, and into their breaks as fast as possible.
3. READING- A receiver can run a great route and get into proper position, but if a QB cannot read
the defense and see the opening, he’ll never get the ball there.
PROTECTIONLike with any spread based offense we will do our best to
protect with 5 or 6 men using a basic slide protection. If there is motion we will slide behind the motion. If thereis no motion we will slide to the strong side. Each player
will be responsible for the gap to the slide side, whichexception of the PS tackle.
If there is motion, the motion back will always check blitz
before heading out into a route. If there is no motionthen B will always check blitz before going on in his
pattern.
If we are in a single back formation, the back will stay inand check blitz in the gap in the slide.
