The contest will be the second against a member of the Big 12 for Kent State in the last three weeks, having dropped a 34-14 decision to Iowa State on Sept. 19. The Flashes are 2-8 all-time against current members of the Big 12, with the lone road victory coming in 1987 at Kansas (31-17). TEXAS, HERE WE COME Over the course of 87 years of football and 817 games, Kent State has never once traveled to the second-largest state in the country for a game. As a matter of fact, the Golden Flashes have played just one team from Texas in the history of the program — that coming in 1985 when they defeated UTEP, 51-24, at Dix Stadium. KSU will see firsthand how it feels to make the 2,500-mile round trip this weekend. However, the Flashes are crossing the Mis- sissippi River for the second year in a row after going to Louisiana-Lafayette in 2008. FLASH FACTS • Sophomore quarterback Giorgio Morgan returned as the starter last Saturday against Miami, playing a half before tweaking his injured ankle. The coaches will continue to evaluate his status throughout practice this week. True freshman quarterback Spencer Keith leads the MAC and is 34th nationally with a 149.40 passer rating. In roughly eight quarters of action, he has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 381 yards and four TDs. • Sophomore Jacquise Terry may have emerged as the replacement for Eugene Jarvis after rushing for 103 yards on 15 carries (6.9 ypc) in Saturday’s win against Miami. • With a late pick against Miami, junior free safety Brian Lainhart now has 10 interceptions in the last 11 games dating back to Oct. 4, 2008. His 12 career interceptions are tied for sixth in KSU annals. • Junior middle linebacker Cobrani Mixon continues to shine, leading the team with 40 tackles (22 solo) and 5.0 TFL. His 10.0 tackles per game are tied for fourth in the MAC and tied for 21st nationally.

Flashes among the mac leaders

previeWing Baylor• Baylor improved to 2-1 with a 68-13 dismantling of

Northwestern State last Saturday. However, the victory came at a tremendous cost as the Bears lost sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin for the season with an ACL injury. In addition, senior defensive back and return specialist Mikail Baker also suffered a season-ending knee injury in the game.

• After opening with a 24-21 victory at Wake Forest, the Bears began a three-game homestand with a 30-22 loss to Connecticut. Baylor has a tremendously balanced offense, averaging 209 yards on the ground and 191 yards through the air per game.

• Head coach Art Briles (Texas Tech ‘79) became the 25th coach in Baylor history on Nov. 28, 2007. The Bears finished 4-8 in his first year at the helm, although six of the losses came at the hands of ranked teams. Briles arrived in Waco after a five-year stint at Houston (2003-07). Two years removed from an 0-11 season, he directed the Cougars to a 34-28 record and four bowl appearances. Briles spent two decades as a Texas high school football coach before serving as the running backs coach at his alma mater from 2000-02.

Key Bears to Watch• Senior quarterback Blake Szymanski will take over the

reigns of the Baylor offense with Griffin out, although he is listed as day-to-day after suffering a bruised shoulder last Saturday. He has attempted just five passes this season, completing three for 58 yards and a touchdown. However, Szymanski is no stranger to the position, having played in 21 games (including 13 starts) over the past three years. Entering this season, he had thrown for 3,561 yards, 26 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

• Junior running back Jay Finley leads the team with 212 yards on 22 carries. He is averaging 9.6 ypc and has one rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, redshirt fresh-man Jarred Salubi is averaging an astounding 18.7 ypc, gaining 131 yards on just seven attempts with on score. Neither Finley nor Salubi have been dropped for a loss so far this year.

• The receiving corps is led by sophomore Kendall Wright and senior David Gettis, who have posted almost identical numbers so far this season. Wright has 15 catches for 189 yards (12.6 ypc) and two TDs, while Gettis has 13 grabs for 167 yards (12.8 ypc) and a pair of scores.

• Defensively, Baylor is led by a pair of linebackers in junior Joe Pawelek and senior Antonio Jones. An All-American last year after making 128 tackles, Pawelek currently has 32 tackles, 2.5 sacks and an interception, while Jones has a team-high 33 stops to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss. Senior tackle Jason Lamb has 12 tackles, 2.0 sacks and an interception.

cortez honoredAfter starting off the season by missing his first two

field goal attempts (one was blocked), true freshman Freddy Cortez recovered in a big way last weekend. The Fort Meade, Fla., native was named the MAC East Special-ist of the Week on Monday for his efforts in Kent State’s win over Miami last Saturday. He nailed all three of his field goal attempts (37, 42, 34) against the RedHawks, despite kicking in a steady rain. His 42-yarder near the end of the second quarter was the longest of his brief career, while his final attempt from 34 yards sealed the victory with 1:19 remaining in the game. The last KSU kicker to be honored by the league was Travis Mayle in 2005.

captain tUrnoverJunior free safety Brian Lainhart has put together quite

an impressive performance over the past 11 games, caus-ing 13 turnovers in the form of 10 interceptions and a trio of forced fumbles (he forced another fumble against Miami that the RedHawks recovered). Kent State’s op-ponents have 30 turnovers in that span, meaning the Cincinnati native has been responsible for forcing close to half of the miscues. On Sept. 21, he was named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in a 10-game span, after tying for the team lead with 11 tackles against Iowa State, while forcing two fumbles and recording an interception for the third consecutive game.

picK streaK extendedLainhart’s late interception against Miami extended

his streak with a pick to four consecutive games, putting him first in the MAC and tied for second nationally with four INTs this year. He now has 12 career interceptions to stand tied for sixth in KSU annals — seven behind Lou Harris’ school record set from 1965-67.

timely sWitchWhen Eugene Jarvis went down for the season with

a kidney injury Sept. 12 at Boston College, the coaching staff made the decision to move sophomore Jacquise Terry back to running back after working him into the wide receiver corps during the preseason. The move paid huge dividends in Saturday’s win over Miami, as the Phenix City, Ala., native had 103 yards on 15 carries (6.9 ypc) — both of which were career-highs. Most importantly, 54 of the yards came on KSU’s final drive (including a 35 yard scamper) and helped set up the game-clinching field goal. Terry had 170 yards on 34 attempts as a true freshman last year.

another move pays oFFIn the spring of 2008, Jameson Konz was moved

from linebacker to tight end to take advantage of his tremendous athleticism. After missing all but the opener last year with an ankle injury, Konz made the slight shift

to H-back prior to the start of the 2009 campaign. The move paid off big time Saturday against Miami, as he had 74 of the Flashes’ 77 receiving yards, including a career-long 56-yard touchdown reception that put KSU up by 16 in the third quarter. The Uniontown, Ohio, native has six catches for 100 yards (16.7 ypc) on the season.

trUly special teamsFreddy Cortez’s performance wasn’t the only special

teams highlight for the Flashes Saturday against Miami. Sophomore punter Matt Rinehart saved a potential di-saster on KSU’s opening drive when he recovered a snap that sailed over his head and was able to get a punt off. Later in the quarter following a Miami field goal, junior college transfer Anthony Bowman returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown — the first for the Flashes since Shawn Bayes had a 95-yard return against Delaware State on Sept. 15, 2007. In the second quarter, Derek McBryde blocked a punt that KSU turned into three points and a 16-3 lead.

mixon steady in the middleJunior linebacker Cobrani Mixon has led Kent State

He is currently tied for fourth in the MAC and tied for 21st nationally with 10.0 tackles per game. He earned MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors following the Coastal game, adding a tackle for loss and one pass breakup, in addition to aiding the Flashes opening score by forcing a Coastal Carolina running back into the arms of teammate Kevin Hogan for a safety.

hoW’d they do that? The scoreboard read 29-19, but the stats tried their

best to say the final score was lying. Miami set opponent season-highs for total yards (552), first downs (26) and plays (91) while holding more than a nine-minute ad-vantage in time of possession (34:38-25:22). However, those numbers were offset by the fact that Kent State forced a season-high five turnovers, while the RedHawks

set opponent highs for penalties (11) and penalty yards (99). The biggest stat of the game could have been the fact that the Flashes went 60 minutes in a steady rain without turning the ball over once — their first errorless game of the season.

Keith QUicK oUt oF the BlocKsSpencer Keith acquitted himself rather nicely in his first

collegiate start, going 21-for-32 for 255 yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception Sept. 19 against Iowa State. The first true freshman to start this early in the season since Joshua Cribbs in 2001, Keith’s 255 yards through the air were the most by a KSU quarterback since Oct. 6, 2007. Thanks to a 2-for-3, 55 yard, one touchdown relief performance against Miami, he now leads the MAC and is 34th in the nation with a 149.40 passing efficiency rating. (While it’s early, the school season record of 136.71 was set by Jose Davis in 1997.)

As a high school senior, Keith led the nation with a state record 5,310 yards passing to direct Pulaski Acad-emy to a 13-1 record and the 5A state title. The MVP of the championship game, he had 70 touchdown passes for the Bruins, who did not punt once the entire season.

rare companyWith his start versus Iowa State, Keith became the

fifth true freshman to start at quarterback this year in the Football Bowl Subdivision, following in the footsteps of Matt Barkley (USC), Tate Forcier (Michigan), Tom Savage (Rutgers) and Trent Steelman (Army).

goode, Better, BestAfter enrolling at Kent State in the spring, freshman

wide receiver Tyshon Goode immediately turned heads in spring practice with his athleticism. The Syracuse, N.Y., native and Hargrave Academy product has quickly gotten the attention of opposing defenses with his standout play this season. The Golden Flashes’ leading receiver after four games, Goode has made 13 grabs for 143 yards — both of which lead the team. He started off with a bang, turning in a six-catch, 84-yard effort in his collegiate debut against Coastal Carolina.

morgan proBaBle For satUrdaySophomore quarterback Giorgio Morgan is probable

for Saturday’s game at Baylor. Morgan originally sprained his left ankle against Coastal Carolina and then appeared to tweak it in the second quarter at Boston College and again against Miami. (He sat out the Iowa State game due to the injury.) In roughly eight quarters of action this year, he’s 33-for-59 (55.9 pct.) for 261 yards and three interceptions.

BooKendsThe coaches moved senior Kevin Hogan from buck

linebacker to defensive end during the preseason in an

effort to get Hogan and junior buck Monte Simmons on the field at the same time. If the early returns are any indication, the move was a wise one. Hogan, who has 17.5 career sacks, is sixth on the team with 15 tackles, while Simmons has responded 2.5 sacks (5th in the MAC), pushing his career total to 10.5. The Swissvale, Pa., native has also forced a pair of fumbles.

third doWn WoesA big reason why Kent State is 112th in the country

in scoring offense (17.0 ppg) is the fact that the Golden Flashes are last in the nation with a 15 percent third-down conversion rate (8-for-52). The stat is magnified even more when you consider that three of those conversions came in the opening drive of the game at Boston Col-lege, meaning KSU has converted just 10 percent of its remaining third downs.

Jarvis oUt For seasonKent State head coach Doug Martin announced at his

weekly Monday afternoon press conference (Sept. 12) that fifth-year senior running back Eugene Jarvis suffered a season-ending kidney injury in the first half of the Sept. 12 game at Boston College.

The Pittsburgh, Pa., native was released from the hospital on Sunday (Sept. 20) and is expected to make a full recovery in 6-8 weeks.

“Eugene is a special player…he’s a good kid,” Martin said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I’m just really thankful that we did not put him back in the game. I can’t say enough about our trainer Pamela Long and the job she did of holding him out. He was ready to fight us both at halftime to get back in the game.

“He’s as tough a football player as I’ve ever been around and this is going to be real hard on him sitting around watching 11 football games. He’ll be here as a leader and he’ll come out of it stronger on the other side.”

Believed to be the only three-time captain in the 87-year history of the program, Jarvis’ 3,426 career rushing yards rank fourth in school history — just 563 yards shy of Astron Whatley’s school record.

mac openersNow in their 59th season of Mid-American Confer-

ence football, the Golden Flashes improved to 20-37-2 all-time in league openers with their 29-19 victory over Miami. Kent State is 11-14-2 when opening at home, with its last win in a MAC lid-lifter at Dix Stadium (prior to Saturday) coming in 1999 when the Flashes knocked off Bowling Green, 41-27.

ant. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, fifth-year seniors Eugene Jarvis (RB) and Jameson Konz (H-back) and juniors Pat Reedy (LT) and Jon Simpson (TE) were surrounded by seven underclassmen, including two true freshmen and a redshirt freshman. Look for the offense to continue to gel as the unit gets more reps together.

BlanK yoU very mUchTalk about a dry spell. Prior to the Golden Flashes’ 18-0

victory over Coastal Carolina Sept. 3, Kent State had not tossed a shutout since a 24-0 victory over Ohio on Oct. 22, 1994 — a span of 163 games. It was also just the second shutout since 1976 for the Flashes and the first season opening shutout at home since a 35-0 win over Northern Illinois in 1967.

solid deBUtMaking his first start in nearly two years, redshirt

sophomore Giorgio Morgan was solid in his 2009 debut, completing 60 percent of his passes (21-of-35) for 201 yards against Coastal Carolina. Not since 2005 had a KSU signal caller completed 20 passes in a game, while the Flashes totaled just three 200-yard passing games in all of 2008. Morgan started a pair of games as a true freshman when Julian Edelman went down with a broken arm late in the 2007 season. In just under six quarters of action (before being injured himself), the East Pointe, Ga., native was 23-for-36 (63.9 pct.) for 274 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

trio oF tv appearances addedThe Mid-American Conference announced on Sept. 3

that Fox Sports Net Ohio would broadcast a trio of confer-ence games this season, two of which include the Golden Flashes. Kent State will appear on television Oct. 10 when Flashes hosts Bowling Green for their Centennial Home-coming contest and at Akron Nov. 7 when KSU makes its inaugural trip to InfoCision Stadium. In addition, Kent State’s final non-conference game at Baylor will appear on Fox Sports Net Southwest in the Big 12 area.

mayBe they’re on to something…Thanks to an 18-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on

Sept. 3, the Golden Flashes have now won eight of their last nine home openers and six of their last seven season openers at Dix. Too bad the game with the Chanticleers was just the fourth time in the last 20 years that Kent State has opened the season at home.

mr. presidentJunior wide receiver Leneric Muldrow was elected presi-

dent of Kent State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2009-10 school year. Best known for his three career touchdowns on fakes while serving as the holder on field goals, the Greenville, N.C., native will head up SAAC’s efforts on campus and in the community. Also serving as team representatives are redshirt freshman offensive lineman Seamus Garvey, sophomore tight end Justin Thompson and junior linebacker Dorian Wood. Muldrow has dedicated this season to his younger brother, Louis, who was diagnosed with cancer last year as a freshman running back at North Carolina A & T. Luckily, the doctors caught the cancer early, but it brought his college football career to a close before it really even started.

sacK danceSenior defensive end Kevin Hogan enters this week

eight sacks shy of setting the Kent State career mark. With 17.5 sacks in his first three seasons, the Chardon, Ohio, native trails only Andy Harmon (18.0) and Justin Parrish (25.0).

QUartet named captainsFor the second year in a row, Kent State head coach

Doug Martin named team captains prior to the start of the season. In a vote conducted among the players, senior running back Eugene Jarvis and sophomore quarterback Giorgio Morgan were tabbed to lead the offense, while junior free safety Brian Lainhart and junior middle line-backer Cobrani Mixon were selected on defense. Jarvis is believed to be the first player in the 87-year history of the program to be a three-time captain. Meanwhile, Lainhart and Mixon both attended Colerain High School in Cincinnati.

centennial cUpWith Kent State and Bowling Green both celebrating

the 100-year anniversary of their founding in 1910, the schools have agreed to add a little spice to their rivalry with the inception of the Centennial Cup. Beginning with the Homecoming football game Oct. 10 in Dix Stadium, points will be awarded for each head-to-head meeting or MAC Championship finish in 14 different sports. The com-petition will run through Bowling Green’s Homecoming football game against the Flashes in the fall of 2010.

Refrigerator Bowl and 1972 MAC Champion & Tanger-ine Bowl teams as part of its Centennial Homecoming celebration. The former players able to attend will be introduced during the Oct. 10 game with Bowling Green. In addition, the 32nd Annual Varsity “K” Hall of Fame class will be announced during the game.

mvp aWard gets neW monicKerAt halftime of Saturday’s game against Miami, Kent

State unveiled a plaque underneath the scoreboard in the Dix Stadium south plaza honoring former Kent State letterwinner Jack Rittichier. Henceforth, the football Most Valuable Player Award will be the Lieutenant Jack Columbus Rittichier Award.

Famous for his 90-yard touchdown run in a Home-coming defeat of Bowling Green that helped propel the Flashes to the 1954 Refrigerator Bowl (the first bowl game in school history), Rittichier went on to captain the 1955 squad as well as the 1956 track team.

After graduation, he joined the Air Force and upon the completion of his tour of duty, Rittichier entered the Coast Guard as a helicopter pilot. After several life-saving mis-sions in the Great Lakes area, he volunteered for duty with the Air Force, flying combat rescue missions in Vietnam.

Unfortunately, he and three other crewman paid the ultimate sacrifice on June 9, 1968 while attempting to rescue a downed Marine Corps pilot. Rittichier’s remains were not recovered until 2002 and he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on Oct. 6, 2003 with full military honors.

neW Faces & neW placesNot only did Doug Martin add a pair of new faces to

his staff in the spring, but he also shifted the duties of some of his returning staff. Craig Aukerman and Richard McNutt joined the staff this year and will head up KSU’s linebacker and cornerback efforts, respectively. Auker-man spent the past four seasons at Miami (Ohio), while McNutt was with the Cleveland Browns last year. In addition, Larry McDaniel will now work with the interior defensive linemen, A.J. Pratt will be in charge of the wide receivers in addition to his duties as offensive coordinator and Zane Vance will now handle the tight ends and be the special teams coordinator in addition to his role as recruiting coordinator.

Foot-phiWhen current KSU offensive line coach Terry Tilghman

played at East Carolina under head coach Steve Logan, football players were not allowed to join fraternities. Naturally, the players created their own frat — Foot-Phi. Tilghman then took the concept with him to first to North Alabama, and now with the Flashes, instituting it as a nearly exclusive club for offensive lineman. Players join the fraternity by making it through preseason camp without missing a practice. The benefits include a T-shirt and Thursday night dinners at the Tilghman house. When one member sees another on campus (preferably with a co-ed) and says “Foot-Phi” the other must respond “Ball” as loudly as possible. While the club is designed for of-fensive linemen, running backs are allowed to join after a 150-yard rushing game and quarterbacks after throw-ing for 200 or more yards. Wide receivers have a much tougher time, as they must earn a spot by playing “old school football” and showing off their blocking skills.

Now in its eighth year, the speaker series showcases distinguished former athletes so they can serve as inspira-tions to current student-athletes. Holtz, a 1959 graduate, is one of Kent State University’s most successful and well-known alumni.

Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame this past December, Holtz shared lessons he has learned through athletics that propelled him to excel academi-cally and in life.

holtz Joins James in hallOn May 1, 2008, it was announced that former Kent

State linebacker Lou Holtz was one of 15 former players and coaches that were elected to the 2009 class of the College Football Hall of Fame. The honor brought to light a rich tradition of superb college coaches that can trace their roots to the campus of Kent State University.

Holtz, who currently serves as an studio and game analyst for ESPN, led six schools to 249 victories over his 30-year head coaching career, highlighted by a national title at Notre Dame in 1988. He is the only coach in the history of college football to take six different teams to a bowl game and was a three-time National Coach of the Year.

Holtz joined former Flashes head coach Don James in the Hall of Fame. James was inducted in 1998 after

compiling 178 victories in 22 seasons as a head coach — first at KSU (1971-74) and then at Washington (1975-92). In 1972, he led the Flashes to the only Mid-American Conference championship in school history and a berth in the Tangerine Bowl. He then went on to lead the Huskies to the 1991 national title after compiling a perfect 12-0 record.

Flashes in the coaching ranKsAmazingly enough, two players from Don James’

1972 squad have gone on to find great coaching success of their own. Current Alabama head coach Nick Saban (defensive back, 1970-73) won a national championship with LSU in 2003, while Gary Pinkel (tight end, 1971-73) directed Missouri to a school-record 12 victories in 2007, finishing the season fourth in the final Associated Press poll after being ranked No. 1 earlier in the year.

In addition, Bob Stoops — who led Oklahoma to the 2000 national title — got his full-time coaching start as an assistant at Kent State in 1988.

The list also includes former head coach Glen Mason (1986-87), who went on to find success at Minnesota, and Dean Pees (head coach, 1998-03) and Dom Capers (graduate assistant, 1972-74) who are the defensive coordinators for the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers, respectively.

head coachDoug

martinKentucky ‘85 • Sixth Season

now in his sixth season as the head coach at Kent State University, Doug Martin continues the de-manding process of building a true program, as

the following list will attest:• A total of nine Golden Flashes earned All-MAC ac-

colades in 2007 and 2008, including two-time selection Eugene Jarvis, who entered his junior season as the na-tion’s leading returning rusher and will start 2009 second among active FBS running backs with 3,268 career yards on the ground.

• Kent State won at Iowa State to open the 2007 campaign, the first time the Flashes defeated a BCS school since a 1987 victory at Kansas.

• Julian Edelman (2009 - 7th round, New England Patriots) made it three years in a row with a Flash going in the NFL Draft. He joined Usama Young (2007 - 3rd round, New Orleans Saints) and Jack Williams (2008 - 4th round, Denver Broncos) as the first Flashes to be drafted since 2000, with Young becoming the sixth-highest pick in the history of the program. Additionally, in those three years, Shawn Bayes, Brian Bell, Colin Ferrell, Andre Kirkland, Daniel Muir, Rico Murray and Augustus Parrish all signed free agent contracts.

• More than 85,000 fans showed up to watch Kent State football at Dix Stadium in 2006 — an average of more than 17,000 per contest. The total jump in fans was 50,000 more than the 2005 season and featured three crowds of 20,000 or more.

Kent State Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy has cer-tainly taken notice of all the positive progression, locking Martin up in December of 2006 with a four-year extension that will keep him in Blue & Gold through 2010.

The extension rewarded a 2006 campaign that saw KSU pull off the fourth-largest turnaround in the nation, improving by five wins over the previous year’s total.

Included in the performance was a five-game win-ning streak, including four straight MAC victories — the Flashes longest conference skein ever.

Furthermore, the nation’s 25th ranked team in total defense limited Miami and Bowling Green to a combined 17 points as Kent State won road games against the RedHawks and Falcons in the same season for the first time since 1972.

Five players went on to earn All-MAC accolades, includ-ing Muir, who was a first team selection on defense.

In addition to his head coaching duties, Martin also serves as quarterbacks coach and was the offensive coor-dinator until the start of this season.

Martin is widely regarded as one of the nation’s pre-mier quarterback mentors. His list of proteges includes three-time All-Conference USA selection and current NFL passer David Garrard, record-setting CFL quarterback Marcus Crandell and other pros Richard Alston and

Joshua Cribbs, who both played quarterback in college under Martin before switching positions in the NFL.

In 2005, Martin’s spread passing attack posted the third-highest yardage total in school history while the team’s 15 touchdown passes were the sixth most in a single year at Kent State. The Flashes also reached the 30-point

mark three times in 2005, running the total number of games with at least that many points to 16 since 2003.

In Martin’s first season, the Golden Flashes posted a 5-6 overall record, winning their final four games for the program’s longest winning streak since 1976. The team also finished in fourth place in the Mid-American Conference East Division with a 4-4 mark while produc-ing three All-MAC players and two honorable mention All-Americans.

Martin also handled the offensive play-calling duties and the unit responded to his coaching, scoring 335 points and racking up 4,168 yards, the second- and third-highest totals, respectively, in school history.

Under his guidance, the Flashes averaged 30.5 points per game, just the third time in school history a team averaged 30 or more points. The team also set a single-game scoring mark in its 69-17 win over Eastern Michigan Nov. 13.

Four times in 2004 the Flashes totaled more than 400 yards on offense, including two games over 500.

Additionally, in two years tutoring All-MAC quarter-back Joshua Cribbs, Martin saw Cribbs develop into one of the top dual threats in the country. Always a talented runner, Cribbs finished his career as the owner of KSU career records for total offense, passing yardage, touch-downs, points and completions. He also ranked fourth nationally in total offense and completed a school-record 64.5 percent of his passes. As a team, the Flashes had a completion rate of 62.8 percent, also a school record.

While his spread offensive style is his calling card, Martin revamped his defensive coaching staff and saw that unit go from ranking 12th of 14 teams in the MAC in total defense in 2003 to first in the league in 2004. It marked the first time since 1987 that the team led the MAC in total defense and just the second time since joining the conference in 1951. Kent State also ranked 15th nationally in total defense.

Martin was named the school’s 19th head coach by Kennedy on March 1, 2004, replacing Dean Pees, who is currently the defensive coordi-nator of the New England Patriots.

“The respect the players have for him as a person and as a coach, plus my own observations, have proven that Doug Martin is very impressive,” Kennedy said. “He is an individual of high quality and high character and I am confident in his abilities to lead

our football program.”Martin joined the Kent State staff in January 2003 as

offensive coordinator. After just one year on the staff, Martin made an instant

impact on the Golden Flashes’ offense. In its first season under Martin’s system, Kent State averaged 26.8 points per game, the second-highest in the last 30 years, and scored 30-or-more points in each of the final six games and did so in a school-record eight games overall.

From 2002 to 2004 Martin’s teams averaged nearly 30 points per game and posted the highest offensive totals in back-to-back years in school history.

From 2002 to 2003 alone, scoring offense increased by 10 points, touchdowns grew from 24 to 40, total offense was up by more than 40 yards per game and passing yardage increased by nearly 100 yards per game.

In 2004, that trend continued as the Flashes’ increased their scoring, touchdowns, passing yards and total yards per game.

Martin came to Kent State following 11 seasons at East Carolina University, the last seven of which he was in charge of the team’s offense. He was at ECU for all of Steve Logan’s tenure there, serving as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for two seasons (1992-93), then another two years as wide receivers coach (1994-95) before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1996.

“What impressed me most about Doug is his vision for the football program and its importance to Kent State University,” Kennedy said. “I am very confident in what I call his quiet resolve for excellence. For Doug, anything short of the very best is unacceptable.”

At East Carolina, Martin played a significant role in the development of quarterback David Garrard, who broke 28 school passing records and total offensive records from 1998-01. In addition, Martin coached the top three receivers in ECU history. During Martin’s time at ECU, the team advanced to five bowl games; the Liberty Bowl in 1994 and ’95, the GMAC (formerly Mobile Alabama) Bowl in 1999 and 2001 and the galleryfurniture.com (now Houston) Bowl in 2000.

Prior to joining the staff at East Carolina, Martin was a graduate assistant at the University of Kentucky, his

alma mater, from 1986-87 and then spent the 1988-91 seasons at East Tennessee State University, where he coached the running backs his first year, then served as the offen-sive coordinator and quarterbacks/wide receivers coach his final three seasons.

Martin was a four-year letter-winner at Kentucky from 1981-84, spending time as a part-time starter at quarterback before injuries limited him to the holder role. A native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Kentucky in 1985.

Martin and his wife Vicki have a daughter, Molly, and two sons, Cory and Bobby. Cory is entering his sophomore season as a relief pitcher on the Kent State baseball team.
