XTERRA WHEELER CANYON HALF-MARATHON “XDURO’The XTERRA Wheeler Canyon Half has been dubbed,“a Trail Run with a Lot of UPSIDE!” And for good measure,as the scramble climbs 2,300-feet straight up the Canyon.

This epic trail run features 13-miles of Mother Nature’sfinest terrain. Of note, it’s the same course as the XTERRAUtah off-road triathlon mountain bike. The XTERRAWheeler Canyon trail running journey takes participantsfrom Pineview Reservoir (a bright and early start at 7:30amin the morning) to trails that lead up into the magnificentWheeler slot Canyon.

About a mile or so of road before the trail head providesrunners a chance to warm-up their legs and settle into earlyposition amongst the field. Once they hit the dirt they’lldiscover XTERRA trail running heaven as they snake theirway up the mountain with the ultimate goal of reachingSnowbasin Resort – which sits like an Oasis a dozen milesand 2,300-feet of climbing away.

Mild, steady climbs on dirt, rock, and root-ridden mountaintrails give way to more demanding climbs on a combinationof sweet single track and rocky double track and the viewsof Mount Ogden and the surrounding wilderness along thispristine set of alpine trails are simply stunning.

As endurance trail runs go, the XTERRA Wheeler CanyonXduro off-road half-marathon is no doubt one of thetoughest – yet most enjoyable – anywhere. Last year themen’s winner was B.J. Christenson, 30, of Salt Lake City in1:19:50 and Liz Stephen, 21, of Park City in 1:32:10.

Once runners get to the top they can grab an ice cold drinkand some bbq from the resort and soak in theone-of-a-kind atmosphere of the XTERRA USAChampionship off-road triathlon.

Runners are also invited to join this wild collection of highenergy characters at a party under the stars Saturday nightin downtown Ogden with highlight videos, great food, livemusic, and good vibes.

It’s open to everyone and provides locals and amateurswho did not qualify their own opportunity to race up theMountain.

FROM A COMMUNITY EVENT TO THE USA CHAMPIONSHIPThe great people of Ogden, world-class facilities atSnowbasin Resort and majestic Wasatch Range combinedto do what no other venue in the history of XTERRA haddone before.

First, in 2004, they rallied the community into hosting an off-road triathlon. Then, in 2006, they turned that race from alocal grassroots affair into a major regional event on theXTERRA Tour (the XTERRA Mountain Championship). Andthis year they’re hosting the XTERRA USA Championship, the biggest race on the XTERRA America Tour schedule.Indeed, the culminating event in the 60-race U.S. series.

Come September 26, some 50 pros - Olympians, AdventureRacing World Champs, Mountain Biking Legends alike - willbe in town to race for $80,000 in prize money. Some 20cameraman will position themselves around the course tocapture all the action for a nationally syndicated one-hoursports special, and amateur athletes from nearly every statein the union will travel here to chase their dreams and racefor the XTERRA National Championship crown.

The Utah Sports Commission, the catalyst in unifying Utah’ssports community and strengthening its presence in theglobal sports marketplace did just that in securing the event.

“Expanding our partnership with TEAM Unlimited, fromhosting our first XTERRA point series event to a regionalchampionship, and now to a national championship, continues to position Utah as a leader in Adventure/Actionsports. This event continues to highlight that sports are akey driver of economic impact and image building for theState of Utah”, said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of theUtah Sports Commission.

The XTERRA USA Championship race, which had beenheld in Incline Village, Nevada for the past eight seasons, annually attracts amateur and professional athletes fromnearly every State in the Union and a dozen countries.

As the grand finale and last race in the XTERRA AmericaTour and with big prize money for professionals, Utah canexpect a significant increase in media exposure andeconomic impact by hosting the national championship.

Utah’s spectacular natural environment and the majesticWasatch mountain range provides an epic setting andchallenge for the biggest race of the season.

“We could not be more excited to have the XTERRANational Championship moving to Ogden and being held ata world-class resort like Snowbasin. Our community hasembraced it fully because it showcases Ogden’s strengthsas the capital for high adventure recreation so well. Weintend to show the best off-road triathletes in the country anincredible course, along with a great time,” said OgdenMayor, Matthew Godfrey.

The XTERRA USA Championship race will be filmed andedited into a one-hour special that will be seen across thecountry via national syndication starting in November of2009. In addition, Utah’s myriad outdoor recreationalpursuits will be featured exclusively in two half-hourXTERRA Adventure shows airing in syndication Maythrough October of each year. Combined, this three showtelevision package will be seen by more than six millionviewers nationwide.

XTERRA USA CHAMPS RACE PREVIEWBy XTERRA Managing Director “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas...

The XTERRA America Tour wraps up on Saturday morningSeptember 26, with more than 300 top athletes who racedall year to qualify toeing the line in search of the XTERRANational Championship title. A little more than two hourslater our first pro man will cross the line, and within the nextthree hours the balance of the field, from top pro to theweekend warrior, will also feel the pride in completing thefinish of a very special year of competition.

Conrad Stoltz, hurt in Richmond with a badly cut foot, will befit and ready to win. Josiah Middaugh also took some timeoff to cure his ills and should be equally ready. Nico Lebrunhas been in the States all summer and has shown amazinglate season strength in winning the last two regional cupraces at Sugarbush in Vermont and Beaver Creek inColorado. Seth Wealing has come back from a bunch ofearly season bad luck to beat Lebrun in Mexico. With theUtah Snowbasin Resort course taking the place of Tahoewe also have the unusual situation where over the last threeyears the winners of the Mountain Champ race have beenStoltz (08), Wealing (07) and Mike Vine (06). Josiah hashad great finishes and lives at altitude; Nico is staying inColorado and just won the XTERRA points series race atLake Tahoe, so he is prepared.

Melanie McQuaid has five wins this season and has wonUtah twice. But the last three races of the season sawShonny Vanlandingham win Arkansas and Colorado andSwitzerland’s Renata Bucher win in Vermont. Both will bein Utah. The end of season phenom Danelle Kabush wassecond in Colorado and is notoriously dangerous inSeptember and October where the big money lives.

What does all that mean? There is no sure bet. We’ve gota bundle of top pros, men and women, who can win inSeptember. For the Pro Series Championship Stoltz andMcQuaid have leads; McQuaid with more room than the”Caveman”. Here is the scene: If Lebrun wins, Conradneeds to be 3rd, if it is Josiah, he needs 4th. For Melanie,if Shonny wins she needs 6th and will win by 1 point.

The age group champs are even tougher to predict, butthere are those “unusual” folks who have morechampionships than Kahuna has beers at the race briefing.Reno’s Tom Lyons has 7 crowns but cannot use his localknowledge of Tahoe in Utah. Kent Robison has 6

championships but did not race last year and is back to gofor #7. Hans Dieben also has 6 wins but faces a toughPeter Lilly if he is to grab #7. Tommy Monica holds 2championships but lost last year and will face some toughcompetition to take it back to California.

On the womens side, Cindi Toepel has 4 as does BarbaraPeterson. Bev Enslow has 3 championships and is headsup with Peterson in 50-54. Kathy Frank holds 3 titles, SuzieSnyder has 4 (but is hurt and not racing) and Kathy Eckertand Sara Hanson have 2 each.

While Utah has elevation, it is not as high as Tahoe was, noras technical. The water will be cold, but nothing like thatglacier lake so conditions have changed considerably. Lotsof great friends and athletes will be there for the end of theseason party on Saturday night and to celebrate the 2009XTERRA champs. Who will get those honors? Come onout and see for yourself.

RACE # 3 - 2009 XTERRA SOUTHEAST CUP RESULTSShelby County, AL (May 23, 2009) - Another state, a wildly different course, yet the same result as Conrad "TheCaveman" Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid roll to their third straight regional championship victories, this time at theXTERRA Southeast Cup at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL. At about the same time the endurance communitycelebrated the life of cycling and triathlon great Steve Larsen (who passed away on Tuesday, May 19) with memorialrides and runs in his hometown of Bend, OR, many of Larsen’s friends in sport were riding and running in honor of himin the southern woods of Alabama.

Leading the charge was Stoltz, who said "the technical parts are usually my strengths, but today I couldn't focus. I didfeel like I had amazing strength today though. This was a great victory for Steve."

Many of the riders dedicated their efforts today to Larsen and his family, including Stoltz and McQuaid."Steve was such a huge inspiration for me coming from a mountain biking background. I felt really strong today,” said

McQuaid. It was certainly a day where XTERRA athletes could find inspiration all around, as even the sports all-timewinningest athlete Jamie Whitmore (cancer survivor/battler) came out from California to be one of the race announcers. In addition, TEAM 413 Gracerunner ministries held a sunrise service before the race and all paused for a moment ofsilence in Larsen’s memory.

RACE # 4 - 2009 XTERRA NORTHWEST CUP RESULTSFarragut State Park - Athol, ID (June 6, 2009) - Melanie McQuaid stayed perfect in 2009 while Dan Hugo brokethrough at the XTERRA Northwest Cup at Farragut State Park just north of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho this afternoon.

Over the last two years on the XTERRA America Tour the 23-year-old from Stellenbosch, South Africa (the same home-town as Conrad Stoltz) finished in the top 4 in seven straight races including three runner-ups, but today the sportsyoungest and brightest star found the top step for the first time. "It sure did help that Josiah (Middaugh) and Mike (Vine)weren't here and Conrad got a puncture, but it's a great start and I'm super excited," said the ever-humble Hugo.Hugo came out of the swim in the incredibly gorgeous Lake Pend Oreille (the 5th deepest lake in the U.S. at 1,158-feet)

with the lead pack that included Stoltz, Craig Evans, Seth Wealing, and Christine Jeffrey in just over 22 minutes. Asplanned, Hugo stuck on Stoltz’ wheel until about three-quarters of the way through the first of two 11-mile loops on thebike when a nail lodged itself sideways through Stoltz’ tire and Hugo found himself all alone in front, where he stayed therest of the way. In the women’s race “Big Fish” Jeffrey put nearly three minutes on McQuaid during the swim and heldthe lead through the first lap of the bike where McQuaid was 1:30 back, but by the bike-to-run transition McQuaid –boosted by the best bike of the day (1:33:31) – was more than four minutes in front. Danelle Kabush made up a minuteon Jeffrey to finish in 2nd (her best of the year), and Jeffrey was 3rd to make it an all-Canadian top three. “Canadiansrule, ehh,” said Jeffrey.

RACE # 5 - 2009 XTERRA ATLANTIC CUP RESULTSRichmond, Virginia (June 14, 2009) - The legend of the Caveman continues to grow. Conrad Stoltz sliced open thetop of his foot shuffling across the bottom of the James River while helping to put a course buoy back in place just threeminutes before the cannon blast signaled the start of the XTERRA Atlantic Cup in downtown Richmond, and crushed thefield anyway. "The cut was so deep I could see tendons," said Stoltz, who posted a series of graphic pre-and-post oppictures on his facebook page.

Fellow competitor and long-time XTERRA ambassador Dr. Kathy Coutinho of Fairfax Station, VA helped wrap plasticaround the wound literally seconds before the start and off he went. News of the carnage spread quickly, and Dr. MattMarchal of Altius Family and Sports Medicine was waiting for Stoltz in the swim-to-bike transition where he poured per-oxide and bandaged the wound and sent the Caveman on his way in a matter of seconds (his T1 split was 46 seconds!).

"Dr. Matt was waiting by my bike and it was like a Nascar pit stop, took no time at all," said Stoltz, who went on to havethe fastest bike split (1:01:44) and hit the run with a one-minute lead over Middaugh and Hugo and ultimately won therace Curt Schilling-style with a bloody shoe. After a series of high fives and "holy cow" comments after crossing the fin-ish line Stoltz was back with Dr. Marchal getting cleaned up, stitched up (seven in all), and iced up all while chatting non-chalantly with the local TV and Richmond Times Dispatch reporters. It was his fourth win in five years in Richmond andfourth win in five XTERRA Cup Series races this season.

In women's race Melanie McQuaid, "inspired by Conrad, the tough guy of the year award winner" led from start-to-fin-ish and stayed perfect in an overwhelmingly imperfect, unpredictable sport. It's McQuaid's fifth straight XTERRA CupSeries win this year, and second-in-a-row in Richmond.

The weather in Richmond was downright pleasant, cool with overcast conditions.

RACE # 6 - 2009 XTERRA SOUTH CENTRAL CUP RESULTSNorth Little Rock, AR (June 20, 2009) - For the first time in 2009 a pair of Americans took the top honors at an XTERRACup Championship race as Josiah Middaugh from Vail, Colorado and Shonny Vanlandingham from Durango, Coloradowon the men's and women's pro titles on a sweltering hot day at the XTERRA South Central Cup in the Heart of Arkansas.

It's the first win for Middaugh since his XTERRA East title last year, and the first for Vanlandingham since her 2008Southeast Championship in Alabama. Middaugh and Vanlandingham were the top Americans in the XTERRA U.S. ProSeries last year, and after six-of-eight races in the Cup Series are in the same spot this year - with both sitting in secondplace behind Conrad Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid, respectively.

The win by Vanlandingham, the most successful mountain biker in NORBA history with 15 national race wins and threeSeries titles, marks her second XTERRA Championship victory and also snaps McQuaid's five-race win streak. It's thefourth career XTERRA championship crown for Middaugh (who also won the Mountain title and XTERRA Canadachampionship in 2004).

RACE # 7 - 2009 XTERRA NORTHEAST CUP RESULTSSugarbush Resort - Warren, VT (July 12, 2009)-The two reigning XTERRA European Tour Champions, FrenchmanNicolas Lebrun and Swiss sensation Renata Bucher, won the inaugural XTERRA Northeast Cup on a muddy yetmagnificent course at Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vermont today.

For Lebrun, who has been in the U.S. since the Cup Series started with the ultimate goal of adding an American Seriescrown to his resume (which includes 3 XTERRA European Tour titles and the 2005 XTERRA World Championship), thevictory is his first of the year, moves him into 3rd place in the standings, and keeps the mathematic possibility of taking theoverall title alive.

It's also a special victory for Bucher (pictured). Since 2005 she has won 18 XTERRA Championships in 10 countries -Saipan, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Japan, earlier this season in Malaysia, and now - final-ly - America.

RACE # 8 - 2009 XTERRA MOUNTAIN CUP RESULTSBeaver Creek Resort-Avon, Colorado (July 18, 2009) - Nico Lebrun and Shonny Vanlandingham won the XTERRAMountain Cup off-road triathlon in the Rockies at Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colorado. It's the second win in seven daysfor Lebrun - who captured the XTERRA Northeast Cup in Vermont on Sunday - and moves him into 2nd behind ConradStoltz in the Cup Series standings heading into the finals - the XTERRA USA Championship in Utah on September 26. The2005 XTERRA World Champ from France had won 3 consecutive XTERRA European Tour championships from 2006-2008before setting his sights on winning the XTERRA America Tour this year. It wasn't looking good for Lebrun after the firstthree races (he didn't finish at the West Cup and was fifth at the next two) but in his last five races he's won twice, placed2nd twice, and was third in another to move within striking distance of Stoltz - a remarkable comeback. For Vanlandingham - the most successful rider in NORBA mountain biking history - the victory caps a brilliant second half

of the season that included two wins (she also won the Southeast Cup), a second and third. Vanlaningham won this racea year ago before it earned championship race status, but this time she did it against an incredible pro field that includedOlympic bronze medalist Susan Williams, Olympic skier Rebecca Dussault, three-time XTERRA Europe champ RenataBucher, two-time XTERRA Worlds runner-up Danelle Kabush, and a cast of others. "Shonny V" was more than four min-utes behind Williams coming out of the water but absolutely crushed the bike course, posting a 1:24:37 split that was fiveminutes better than Sara Tarkington's second-best time. Tarkington, meanwhile, had the best race of her XTERRA careerwith a third-place finish. Kabush had the fastest run split (41:08) to finish in 2nd.

The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete forwithin their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited tocompete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Utah onSeptember 26. This year there are 60 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam andCommonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan). It marks the 13th straight year of expansion for XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works:1) CHOOSE REGION: There are 8 regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTHEAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York.ATLANTIC (AT) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C.SOUTHEAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands.MIDWEST (MW) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky.SOUTHCENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.NORTHWEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska.WEST (W) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) DETERMINE YOUR DIVISION/AGE GROUP: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2009.Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+(w), 60-64 (m), 65-69 (m), 70+ (m), and we also have Collegiate and Physically Challenged Divisions.

Collegiate Division: To qualify as a collegiate athlete, a current student ID must be presented at registration. When there are at least three athletes from two or more schools, a team award will also be presented. Athletes in the collegiate division get collegiate points (not age group points).

Physically Challenged Division: There are two physically challenged age groups, 15-39 and 40+, and 6 categories:Below the knee amputee, above the knee amputee, below the elbow amputee, above the elbow amputee, blind and impaired/les autres.

3) RACE AND SCORE: Series competitors race for points at their choice of 60 events - including XTERRA Points Series(XPS) races & XTERRA Cup Series (XCS) races. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like and their best threefinishes count towards their total points score. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event intheir region. Note: Athletes do not have to qualify to race in the XTERRA Cup Series events.

4) COUNT ‘EM UP: Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. Athletes can earn morepoints at Cup Series races because, generally, participation is higher and the courses are tougher. If an athlete races atmore than one XTERRA Cup Series event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at thesame rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

In 2009 and beyond, the XTERRA Eco Team willcontinue to make a difference ecologically by offeringa few hours of time to local environmental initiativesnear our race courses. This could be anything fromtrail maintenance to park clean-up, ecologicalrestoration, or tree planting work parties.

The XTERRA Eco Team is a core component ofXTERRA, and a terrific sustainability programperpetuated by GU.

Beyond organized volunteer work parties, XTERRAathletes are encouraged to sign the “pledge board”confirming their intent to keep the trails clean and notonly deposit their rubbish in designated drop zonesduring the race but to be conscientious wherever theyroam.

XTERRA’S COLLEGIATE DIVISION OVERVIEWHERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for theirschool as an individual. Athletes do not need to be amember of a school club or team.

There are no age groups in the collegiate division, justmale and female categories.

Collegiate racers collect points in the XTERRA AmericaTour Series but are not eligible for age group awards - theyonly race against other collegiate entries.

Whenever there are three athletes from two or moreschools entered in the same race they’ll go against eachother for school pride in the college team division. Theremust be at least two schools with teams for a team award tobe presented.

A “team” must consist of at least 3 male or femalemembers. There are no mixed teams. A team can havemore entrants, but less than three will not constitute a team.

Points for team awards (male and female) will count thefinishing positions of the smallest number entered by aqualifying team. Example: College A has 5 men; College Bhas 7 men; College C has 9 men. Only the fastest 5finishers will count towards the team awards.

Points for team awards will be calculated based on the finishing positions of the team members. The lowest total is thewinner. Example: Each team counts 3 athletes. Team A finishes 1, 8 and 15 overall for a total number 24. Team Bfinishes 5, 6 and 10 for a total number 21. Team C finishes 2, 9 and 20 for a total number of 31. Team B wins. In nocase will more than 7 athletes count towards the team awards regardless of the total number of entries by any oneteam. Should a club enter more than 7 men or women, the coach must nominate the 7 individuals he wants scored forteam awards. Other members are still eligible for individual awards, but their finishing position will not be countedtowards the team totals. Positions counted are overall positions in gender, not just collegiate entrants. This wouldinclude professional entries.

Collegiate Cup:

A Collegiate Cup award will be given when two or more schools have at least 3 men and 3 women per school represent-ed. Example: College A has 5 men, 2 women; College B has 7 men, 3 women. There can be no Collegiate Cup awardas there are not 2 teams that meet the overall requirements. Should two or more schools have the necessary entries, scoring will be similar to the team scoring method with all finishing positions of qualified team members added.

Also:

Collegiate entrants race for separate awards. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female individualcollegiate division finishers, the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the winner of the Collegiate Cup competition (ifapplicable). Pre-Registration is required for the XTERRA Collegiate Cup to be presented. Athletes competing in theCollegiate Division do not prevent XTERRA Age Group athletes from receiving XTERRA America Tour points.

At the XTERRA Regional Champ races, collegians can enter the Sport distance but as an age group athlete. There isno college division in the half-distance XTERRA Sport race.

Sept. 26 - XTERRA Collegiate Nationals - All college students are welcome to race for the XTERRA CollegiateNational Championship on the same course, on the same day, and at the same time as the invite-only XTERRAUSA Championship on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah.

Some 300 qualified athletes representing 43 states racedfor their shot at the national championship of off-roadtriathlon last October in Nevada.. The race consisted of a1-mile swim in Lake Tahoe (58-degrees), a 21.7 milemountain bike that traversed the Flume and Tahoe RimTrails, and a 6.1 mile forest trail run. The weather onraceday turned out to be amazing, with sunny, clear andcrisp conditions in the 60’s.

Erin Kummer from Boulder, CO won her third XTERRAChampionship race of the season – and biggest of hercareer – placing 17th overall and more than eight minutesahead of runner-up Keri Grosse to win the overall amateurnational title. On the men’s side the very young and veryfast Joshua Olmstead from Sacramento edged TimMenoher by 30-seconds to win the amateur crown.

2009 XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Following an action-packed racing season that will span 15 countries withmore than 100 events, XTERRA will host its 14th XTERRA World Championshipin Maui on October 25th. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the WorldChampionship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan,Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Austria, UnitedKingdom, France, Mexico, Malaysia, the Czech Republic and the U.S.

The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Makena Beach, a grueling30- kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, & an 11-kilometer trailrun.Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day.

Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage torepeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the mostintimidating in the series.

The maxed-out field is limited to 600 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with one ofthe richest pro purses in multisport at $100,000, and it is awarded solely on thebasis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offersa unique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a less thanstellar season, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn thecoveted title of XTERRA World Champion.

Last year Ruben Ruzafa from Spain captured the men’s championship andJulie Dibens from the UK won the women’s crown for the second year in a row.A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man and

woman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA WorldChampionship time. Only two weeks and a narrow channel of ocean separatethe two events, which each year attract a growing number of enduranceathletes. In 2008, Spain’s Eneko Llanos won the men’s double and Swiss’Sibylle Matter won the women’s double.

At the heart of XTERRA is the fundamental idea of puttingon great races in epic places with friendly faces. Prettysimple, really, but it’s a formula that has proven successfulover the years and that same philosophy is being used togrow the XTERRA Trail Run Series.

Now in its fifth year as a stand-alone set of races outsideof the off-road triathlon circuit, the XTERRA Trail Run Seriesboasts 50 runs in 16 states and several countries, givingrunners the opportunity to race their way around theworldliterally.

XTERRA’s main focus is on the off-road half-marathondistance trail run, what XTERRA calls an “Xduro”. Whenasked about the paradigm shift (XTERRA Trail Runs used tobe mostly 5km and 10km runs) Tom Kiely, CEO of XTERRA,explained that “after a decade of producing trail runs along-side our XTERRA off-road triathlons we learned that ouraudience wanted a bigger challenge than a 10k. What themarket told us was to create a series of half-marathons thathave a physical challenge parallel to that of a roadmarathon, but with Mother Nature along for the ride.”

Two big-time races, in truly stunning adventuredestinations, were added to the 2008 line up and are backin ‘09. The XTERRA Trail Running NationalChampionship returns to Bend, Oregon on September13 and the XTERRA Trail Running World Championshipis back at Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian Island of Oahuon December 6.

Not long ago Bend was named “America’s Best TrailRunning Town” by Outside Magazine, and with its widevariety of terrain, mild fall climate, endless miles of pristinetrails and a local community full of enthusiasm and supportfor the race, runners can expect a one-of-a-kind experienceat Nationals.

“The U.S. Trail Run Series is the fastest-growing segmentof XTERRA and the National Championship race is turninginto a really big deal,” said Kiely. “We think Bend is anamazing place to visit and explore, and an ideal venue forthe last race in the series.”

There are several regional series in the U.S. - SoCal,NorCal, Georgia, Virginia, Philly, South Carolina, NewEngland, and Tennessee – and each hosts between 3 and9 races through the course of the year. The winner of eachage group in each series earns free entry into the XTERRATrail Running National Championship race.

In Bend the championship event is an Xduro (21km/13.1mile), but the day-long running celebration will also featureraces of 10km and 5km distances, a festival/expo center forparticipants and spectators, K9 Challenge, and Paul

Mitchell cut-a-thon. While the race field will includecompetitors who have raced in other XTERRA events, participation is open to the general public.

Following Nationals, runners can say Aloha! Held theweekend prior to the Honolulu Marathon, the XTERRA TrailRunning World Championship will kick off the “greatestweek of running on Earth” for athletes from around theglobe. For competitive runners, $10,000 in prize money willbe awarded to the top male and female finishers and racersfrom Xduro events in South Africa, New Zealand, the CzechRepublic, Italy, and Japan are expected to come join in theadventure. The site at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of Oahu

is nothing short of magical. Arguably the most stunninglandscape in Hawaii, the 4,000 acre working cattle ranchhas been the setting for major motion productions such asJurassic Park, Godzilla and LOST. From the steep mountaincliffs to the sparkling sea, the terrain varies from dense rain-forest to broad open valleys and from beautiful white sandbeaches to awesome verdant cliff faces.

This gathering of international trail runners is highlightedby the 21km Xduro but is accompanied by numerous eventsranging from shorter distance trail runs and kids’ races to anadventure walk for charity and family entertainment.

“XTERRA is thrilled with the growth of its Trail RunningSeries” said Janet Clark, President of TEAMUnlimited/XTERRA.

“XTERRA Trail Runs give runners an opportunity toexplore some wildly natural environments and challengeMother Nature’s diverse and unique offerings from roots torocks, to stream crossings and unexpected scenic vistas.”

58

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii.

Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide

leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of

opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and

VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

THE XTERRA PLANETAt the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined tobecome a lifestylea movement.

And look at what XTERRA has become

- From that one race in 1996 to 100+ in 13 countries in a 12-year span including a 60-stop America Tour for amateursand a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on nearly every continent in the world.

- XTERRA initiated a series of camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards anactive lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance torace as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help Athletes

Stalk Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray and Ashley Brown — designers of XTERRA’s new

line of footwear and apparel — stood at the finish line of the

XTERRA World Championship in Maui in October 2008.

While many of the competitors lay in bed the night before

counting sheep in anticipation of the race, that afternoon

Gray and Brown were counting shoes.

Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe. As athletes poured

down from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from their

nearly seven-mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines,

Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their eyes.

“Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown, who

along with partner Gray have also developed shoes for

Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing sta-

bility for less weight.”

They returned to the drawing board, determined to make

XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running

shoe on the market. With four months until the launch of the

shoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City,

designs were tweaked, materials tested — including a

unique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefoot

and a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel.

But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.

After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, a

molding model never before seen in the category was

created. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole,

replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of two

layers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfort

and stability while taking away weight.

The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightest

trail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces for

men, 9.5 for women.

With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Gray

and Brown began to research every movement taken on a

trail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degree

directional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water,

the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.

As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their

studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as the

lead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s new

footwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.

“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digging

into loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every

step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathlete

at Syracuse.

“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he

continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’s

unique outsole lug concept.”

The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and

Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design forms

independent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flex

zones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted the

lugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center,

helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creating

a larger surface area.

“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s

co-existence with all things found in the environment, said

Brown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it be

animal, plant or any of nature’s elements.

Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line

is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’re

to be connected with.”

XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trail

runner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, and

performance slide.
