About Augustana College Known for its balance of liberal arts with focus in a major field, collaborative research opportunities, competitive athletic teams and award-winning student activities programs, Augustana College is a selective independent college of the liberal arts and sciences related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The college enrolls approximately 2,500 men and women of diverse ethnic, religious and social backgrounds, from across the United States and around the world.

Augustana’s athletic teams have won more championships than any other school in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. The Vikings own a total of 172 total team championships (135 men and 37 women) since the league began in 1946-47. Augustana is currently sixth in the nation in number of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-Americans produced in all sports with 130 as of June, 2009. During the 1990’s the Vikings finished third, trailing only Nebraska and M.I.T.

Home to a Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society chapter since 1949, Augustana grants baccalaureate degrees in more than 60 areas of study. Along with a competitive athletic environment, student-ath-letes can join one or several of the school’s 150 student organizations or take advantage of Augustana’s wide variety of opportunities for international study. Augustana has a student-faculty ratio of 11:1, and nearly 90 percent of the faculty hold the Ph.D. or the terminal degree in their field.

The following mission statement guides Augustana’s liberal arts curriculum and student programs.

Augustana College, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and a Lutheran expression of the Christian faith, is committed to offering a challenging education that develops qualities of mind, spirit and body necessary for a rewarding life of leadership and service in a diverse and changing world.

These goals and ideals also are reflected in the mission statement of the athletic department:

The Department of Athletics offers all Augustana College students an opportunity toward the development of the total person. Working in a cooperative and active learning environment and dedicated to imparting a lifelong awareness of health and wellness our department assists students in the acquisition of dynamic skills knowledge and fitness.

We value dignity, respect, diversity, accountability, com-munication and teamwork: and challenge each participant to achieve a sense of self confidence, pride, team unity, success, and cohesiveness through competitive sport. Our programs support the mission of Augustana College by cul-tivating the individual in all facets of life within and without the competitive arena.

2009 MEN’S SOCCER - 1

Senior Mike Dolan is the returning goal keeper after a 2008 season where he allowed only 25 goals and had a 1.51 goals-against-average.

2009 MSOCCER PROSPECTUS

Vikings optimistic heading into 2009 thanks to senior leadershipWhen third year head coach Brenton Joseph talks about his team’s prospects heading into the 2009 season he points to one very big factor. His Augustana roster will feature 10 seniors and that statistic is not lost on Joseph.

“We have plenty of seniors and we will count on them to provide leadership,” said Joseph who has compiled a record of 16-16-5 in his previous two seasons at the Vikings helm. “I think there is plenty of motivation for that group to have a good year and leave college on a high note.”

Augustana was 6-9-2 in 2008 after finishing 8-7-3 in Joseph’s first year in 2007. A total of eight starters re-turn from a year ago, including first team all-conference performer Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) at forward.

“The key to having a successful season will be to change the outcome of close games,” said Joseph, who watched last year as his team lost six games that were decided by a single goal. “We need to capitalize on our chances and that is where I think our leadership will come in.”

One of those 10 seniors, Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) will handle the goalkeeping duties once again. Dolan saw action in 17 games and logged 1,487 minutes. He allowed 25 goals and had a 1.51 goals-against-average. Freshman Brian Szkarlat (Morgan Park Academy, Chicago, Ill.) will be the backup.

The defense in front of Dolan will be solid with seniors Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.) leading the way. Both have been regulars for most of their careers. Junior Patrick Clore (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and sophomores Thomas Blakeney (Marian Central Catholic HS, Algonquin, Ill.), Brennan Doherty (Marian Central Catholic HS, McHenry, Ill.) and Brett Bleecher (Marist HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) all made good progress last year. Transfer sophomores Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Conner Martinez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) should both be in the mix. Junior Tim Marlega (Conant HS, Elk Grove, Ill.) is coming off an injury and freshman Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) has good credentials.

In the midfield seniors Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Ros-coe, Ill.) and Nick Galounis (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) will hook up with junior Sean O’Malley (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Marc Nethercote (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.). Junior Kyle Pankow (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) is coming back to the Vikings after missing the 2008 season and sophomore Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) is a transfer. Senior John Linden (Fremd HS, Libertyville, Ill.) will get a shot in the midfield and freshman Kevin

Wyrostek (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) will get a long look.

Wallner, who played both in the midfield and at forward, was the leading scorer on the team a year ago with five goals and two assists for 12 total points. He will probably be at forward along with fellow seniors Jonathan Woo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.), Dave Shrigley (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Pheng Xiong (Sheboygan North HS, Sheboygan, Wis.). Shrigley scored two goals and had two assists in 2008. Sophomore Demarcus Benion (Lutheran North HS, St. Louis, Missouri) and freshman Martin Skantze (Chester-ton, Indiana HS, Oslo, Norway) will lend quality depth.

“We are anxious to get going,” said Joseph. “We are opti-mistic. One thing that will be a key will be to see how we react to adversity. I like the work ethic and attitude of this team.”

2 - AUGUSTANA VIKINGS

HEAD COACH BRENTON JOSEPHBrenton Joseph became the seventh head coach in men’s soccer history at Augustana when he accepted the position in June of 2007. In his first season leading the Vikings, the team recorded an 8-7-3 record and finished strong, winning four of its last six matches. Last year Augustana compiled a 6-9-2 mark, giving Joseph a two year record of 14-16-5 at the helm of the Blue & Gold.

Joseph joined the Augustana staff after a 10 year run at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois where he

held head coaching spots with both the men’s and women’s programs. He replaced Scott Mejia, who compiled a 68-37-6 record in a six year stint with the Vikings that began in 2001. Mejia, who was the head coach for both the men and women, remains the coach of the women’s program.

Joseph joined the Benedictine staff in 1997 and served as both the men’s and women’s head coach from 1997 through 2001. He became solely the women’s head coach in 2002 and served in that capacity until 2004 when he took over the reigns of the men’s team, beginning with the 2005 season. The men’s team had second place finishes in the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference in 1999 and 2000 and in 2005 made it to the championship game of the conference tournament.

His women’s teams compiled a record of 50-92-5 during his eight years at the helm and his 2000 team’s 14-5 record is the best in school history. Benedictine had a 9.5 game turnaround from the 1999 season and that was the greatest improvement in NCAA Division III women’s soccer that season and still ranks as the fourth best improvement all-time in the divi-sion. In 2003 he guided the Eagles’ women to runner-up finishes in both the regular season and conference tournament as they went 12-7-2 overall and 3-0-2 in conference play.

He served as the assistant men’s soccer coach at Alabama A & M in 1994 and was an assistant for the University of Alabama-Huntsville men’s pro-gram in 1995 and 1996. He helped Alabama-Huntsville to a 16-1-1 record; a Gulf South Conference title and a first ever berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament. He is a 1993 graduate of Alabama A & M with a bachelor of science degree in computer science.

He has extensive coaching experience at both the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and club level in the Chicago area. He has coached the

Ajax FX Chicago Soccer Club since 1999.

He was a standout athlete in college, earning third team NCAA All-America honors at Alabama A & M when he helped lead his team to an 18-2 record. He was the team’s leader in assists for three years and was a second team CoSIDA Academic All-American. He was also part of an ESPN feature on outstanding minority athletes at the collegiate level. He played one year at Mercer Community College and was part of a team that was ranked number one in the nation and won a regional championship.

Joseph played professional soccer for the Chattanooga Express and was a member of the junior national team for his native country of Trinidad and Tobago.

ASSISTANT COACH BRAD BECKER

Brad Becker will be in his third year as the assistant coach for men’s soccer at Augustana. Becker, a four year letterwinner for the Vikings, graduated from Augustana in 2007. He served as team captain in 2006 and finished his career ranked seventh on the school’s all-time list of goal scorers with 38. He also totaled 14 assists and finished with 90 total points, which is seventh on the Vikings career list.

He enjoyed his highest goal scoring year as a freshman in 2002 when he racked up

18 goals and three assists for 39 total points. He was a second team all-conference performer as a freshman.

Becker graduated from Augustana with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in political science. He is currently employed as a transportation sales representative at CH Robinson Worldwide.

A native of Naperville, Illinois where he was a standout performer at Na-perville North High School, Becker has successfully completed both his “E” and “D” coaching licenses.

2008 MENS SOCCER REVIEW

Scott Wallner was a first team all-conference selection in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the Vikings in 2008.

Scott Wallner earns first team all-conference honors as Vi-kings finish season with six victoriesThe Augustana men’s soccer team wrapped up the 2008 cam-paign with an overall record of 6-9-2. The Vikings were seventh in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, finishing at 1-5-1. The team earned its conference win against North Central and also tied Elmhurst.

The Vikings opened the season by splitting a pair of games on the road against Rhodes and Millsaps. After falling 2-1 against Rhodes in the season opener, the team came right back with a 2-1 win of its own against Millsaps the following day. The team followed up with its first shutout and most lopsided victory of the year, cruising past MacMurray 5-0 to move to 2-1 overall. A 0-0 double overtime draw and a tough 2-1 loss to Central followed, but Augustana again responded with two straight victories, de-feating Luther (1-0 2OT) and Iowa Wesleyan (4-0) to improve to 4-2-1 overall.

A mid-season skid left the team at 4-7-1 before Augustana grabbed its fourth shutout win of the season, defeating Beloit 4-0. The Vikings wrapped up the CCIW schedule with a 2-0 loss at Illinois Wesleyan, a 2-1 victory against North Central, and a 2-2 draw in double overtime against Elmhurst. The squad dropped a hard fought 3-2 decision to Loras to close out the campaign.

Junior midfielder Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior forward Dan Hogan (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) each scored five goals to lead the offense. Wallner and senior midfielder Matt Meyer (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) tied for the team lead in points, each compil-ing 12 this season. Wallner had two assists along with his five goals while Meyer finished with four goals and a team high four assists. Hogan added one assist to his five goals, finishing with 11 points and ending the season as the third Viking in double fig-ures in points. Wallner was also named as a first team selection to the CCIW All-Conference squad for his efforts.

Junior forward Dave Shrigley (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was fourth on the team with six points. He scored twice and was credited with a pair of assists. Sophomore midfielder Greg Maggio (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was right behind him, totaling five points on the season with two goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.), junior midfielder Pheng Xiong (Sheboygan North HS, Sheboygan, Wis.), and junior midfielder John Linden (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) each finished with four points as all three players scored two goals dur-ing the season.

Freshman defender Sean Hamman (St. Francis Prep HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman midfielder Marc Nethercote (Gray-slake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) both tallied three points, scoring one goal and adding an assist. Senior defender Craig Bucy (Jack-sonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) scored one goal to finish at two points. Junior defender Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arling-ton Heights, Ill.) also compiled two points on a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) and sophomore midfielder Alex Bennett (Lincoln Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) both had one assist, totaling one point.

Senior Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) played in all 17 games as a goalkeeper, making 62 saves and allowing 25 goals. He compiled a 5-8-2 mark and played a key role in all five shutouts this season. Sophomore Tom Marsden (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) also saw time in net for the Vikings this season. He played in three games and made three saves, also helping in a pair of shutout victories. Marsden did not allow a goal in almost 103 minutes of action. The Vikings held a 27-25 goal scoring edge against the opposition and outshot its foes by a 201-190 margin. Augustana attempted 69 corner kicks while opponents managed 89 attempts.

Now in its 64th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.

Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.

As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW mem-bership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College with-drew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew.

Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s compe-tition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Central in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanctions 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling.

Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 172 total. Of those 172, the men have won 135 and 37 belong to the women.

Four years ago the Vikings won their first ever CCIW title in men’s soccer. In addition to winning the conference

championship in 2002, Augustana has recorded second place finishes in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1998, 1999 and 2003.
